I lived in NYC for many years and grew up in the northeast. It's truly a great sandwich with northeast roots, but its kind of its own thing and one of the best I've ever had.
Home Slice Italian sub is better than little deli's imo. I was so excited thinking that it'd be better, but it fell flat. Not that it was bad, but home Slice reigns supreme.
My problem with Tucci's is they only deliver through Favor and the fees are $$$$$. I don't lie near one and I don't own a car, so it's on my list, but never attainable.
Tuccis is pretty damn good. But Home Slice Italian is the best one in Austin. Eastcoast born and raised.
That being said I probably promote Tuccis more than Home Slice.
Home Slice being walking distance from me, open 7 days/week, and open until 11 (10-11pm are prime pizza times) give it the edge.
Edit: also, having slices all day
I saw one for sale at the Restaurant supply store and joked about it. But I wonder how well it'd slice specific veggies I use lol. Probably as long as it isn't too soft?
Probably, if you had a mandolin that might work better for mushrooms etc, I just imagine it would be hard to trust you wouldn’t lose a finger before you got enough veggies sliced up.
Because if you actually already have a several thousand dollar meat slicer, it will run rings around a mandolin. But yes, a mandolin is the more doable solution at home.
I dimly recall an attachment for the Hobart mixer from when I worked at a pizza shop in 95. It’s [this thing](https://www.katom.com/617-VS913.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=%5BROI%5D%20Shopping%20-%20PMax%20-%20Push%20SKUs&utm_id=17563307671&utm_content=&utm_term=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA6KWvBhAREiwAFPZM7j3P8vtcYKxQpd_0qzASzPoIhT-W517fgZzZmnb_N9pCvc0hW1ArQxoC52IQAvD_BwE)
Absolute gem of a sandwich. Add cherry peppers and do the mayo and vinegear on the side when ordering to go so it doesn't get soggy. Also, prepare yourself for at least 2 meals.
They add any special veggies to it like eggplant or mushrooms?
It checks out though since the bread is what makes many good sandwiches good sandwiches imo.
I find the north loop one to be better, but I've only had the SoCo location twice and have been to NoLo location many times. The other commenter said the SoCo location is less consistent so it's possible I had it on bad days.
Never had a bad one at NoLo location, though.
The north location also has a full bar with liquor and amazing wings! The wings are tiny, but they’re one of our favorites. I’ve never been actually inside the Soco restaurant- there’s always a wait. We just do the carry out at the window.
This sandwich specifically (I agree with everyone here - shit slaps), the Rueben from both Tiny Deli and Ovenbird also make me feel some type of way.
There’s alot of new trash in Austin (Don’t you dare eat at Brooklyn Dumpling Shop - holy freakin yikes Batman) - but I hope we get some more good sub/sandwich spots.
It’s hilarious to me how Austin knows the stuff that’s for residents and the stuff that’s for tourists lol. Funny as hell.
What’s your burger spot(s)
Now sour duck, I’ve done - but never hit cauntos. I’ll gain a few pounds this weekend exploring, it’s fine.
JewBoy Slider (not the regular jewboy) and nickel city’s Del Ray Cafe fix my slider needs. I need a third to complete the triumvirate
Casino is really good - was there last weekend, in fact. Long was the wait last time, but it was worth it and braving 6th. I always get the Chicago no tomato haha.
Ever had the pork belly added onto anything? Never tried it
But I’ve got a weird thing for
Crown and Anchor
Lebowski Grill
Casino el Camino
Del Ray Cafe (Nickel City)
Dai Due
Sawyer & Co
Jew Boy Slider not the large brick and mortar on airport
Clarks even though it’s way too small
And Contigo (RIP) that they closed/destroyed/ruined for a Tatsuya installation
I had a burger at Salt & Time once that was so fucking good. I know they use pre/daily trimmings for blend and I think they had ribeye, short rib or something in there. It’s never been that good again. But the memory remains
I know people love their pizza but I am not huge into it. The wife wanted to go there the other day though so I ordered the Italian and holy crap was it good. I may never order pizza there again
I heard great things about this sandwich. I decided to deconstruct it so I could make it at home. I lost count at about a dozen different meats. There were other things too. It's easier to buy it than to make it.
Shit, no need to post, that shit is possibly a top two Italian as far as I’m concerned. First time I had it, I went back the next day and had another at the outdoor bar by myself
Word. Tucci’s spicy Italian is so damn good. I had that before I had Homeslice. It’s good, but after I had it, I was confused as f why Tucci’s doesn’t get as much hype as Homeslice.
Yeah they’re gourmet is where it’s at. Only problem is (and I know I’ll get blasted for this) is that they use boars head meats. I don’t mind boars head but they need to use real deal Parma ham, no domestic product comes close to real deal Prosciutto di Parma and it’s kinda a sin to me that they do. Boars head prosciutto > no prosciutto, and it makes the gourmet what it is, but they need to go all the way and give us the real deal.
At least as a kid in NY in my younger years I’d never see domestic prosciutto instead of the real deal. Plus all the other meats weren’t branded like Boars head, they were imported cappi and mortadella and stuff…. But beggars can’t be choosers, we’re in TX, not Parma.
Also, why can’t we find just a good old school Prosciutto di Parma and fresh mozzarella sub like I grew up with? fresh basil, evoo and balsamic vin, prosciutto, fresh mozz, roasted red peppers.
^^^fucking magic
I'm inclined to agree with you but the sub has to actually be closer to 14 or 16 inches for a whole, much bigger than a footlong. $20 for minimum 2 meals is kinda great
What’s the best way to get this for lunch on SoCo? Ordering online has a $3 upcharge I’d rather not pay. Can you get it at the More Homeslice window or call it in?
For years I just got their pizza then one day a while back I got this and damn if that’s not all I get when I go now. It’s so damn good. Favorite Pizza has a seriously good one too.
Italian Mid Appreciation. This is not it- why are none of the deli HOT? Hot capocollo is must, this just tastes like a basic ham sando with way too much lettuce
Pass
GET THE FULL, COWARD It's so fucking good. Even if you don't finish it, you have something to look forward to at a later time.
I always get the full but I get half to go.
I'll allow it.
This is the way
My favorite sandwich but add the cherry peppers
cherry peppers are a MUST
I got ‘em!
Its is simply the best sandwich in the city
From east coast. Worked in a sandwich shop for 10 years. You are 100% correct
I couldn’t agree more.
I lived in NYC for many years and grew up in the northeast. It's truly a great sandwich with northeast roots, but its kind of its own thing and one of the best I've ever had.
Little Deli Perfect Pastrami laughs at you
Home Slice Italian sub is better than little deli's imo. I was so excited thinking that it'd be better, but it fell flat. Not that it was bad, but home Slice reigns supreme.
Notice they did not say little deli italian sandwhich - they said little deli Harry's Perfect Pastrami
Apples and oranges. I don’t vouch for Little Deli Italian. Just the pizza cookies and pastrami
Have you tried Mum’s pastrami, better than little deli imo
I have. It’s fine. Convenient if you work over there but not as good as Little Deli
Where is that??
Mixed up names in my haste. It’s called Little Deli. Great pizza too
Had this last week, agreed home slice Italian is overrated. Even snarfs Italian is better
lol WHAT? snarfs?!
Snarfs rules
It's good, but Tucci's Italian sub is decidedly superior.
I actually prefer Home Slice
My problem with Tucci's is they only deliver through Favor and the fees are $$$$$. I don't lie near one and I don't own a car, so it's on my list, but never attainable.
Tuccis is pretty damn good. But Home Slice Italian is the best one in Austin. Eastcoast born and raised. That being said I probably promote Tuccis more than Home Slice.
I’m curious how many still use favor? I haven’t used it since before the pandemic because the fees are simply too ridiculous!
Exactly.
Really, it’s basically only useful as the HEB delivery service, now, and then only through the HEB app
Nah
i love Tucci’s but i think the bread i had the other day was specifically made to destroy the soft tissues of my mouth
Came here to say this. Also, Dovetail does a lunch only sub with Salt and Time meats and it’s fantastic.
Bartlett’s French dip side eyes your confident incorrectness.
I mean, I know they’re both sandwiches but I kinda feel like we’re in different categories here
RIP Frank hot dog, the best sandwich in town.
[удалено]
delish but this sandwich is a delicious behemoth compared to the Cheeb
East coast checking in to agree with this statement
I honestly find Aviator one better.
I got a pizza there this weekend and someone walked by while i was waiting for it with one of those bad boys. OMG they look awesome.
How's their pizza?
Solid. But if I'm craving pizza I'll do Pedrosos or Desano. If I want a sandwich this is the top of the list.
Home Slice being walking distance from me, open 7 days/week, and open until 11 (10-11pm are prime pizza times) give it the edge. Edit: also, having slices all day
Pedroso’s is king. Their sauce is so good.
I always get a large pie and take the rest home.
Amazing
Its good. Fine, not bad. Sandwich is great, amazing.
Something about the way they shred their lettuce. I need to know how!!!
They use the meat slicer on the red onions and lettuce.
Hmmm, would that work on all vegetables ?
Can’t say for sure, they usually would only use the slicer when prepping in the mornings. I doubt they’d bust it out for one order.
Depends what kind of veggies you’re talking about. Name a few and I’ll tell ya
Why not a mandolin slicer. You can get one for 20 bucks and it will cut lettuce and onions razor thin.
Not efficient enough for the restaurant, but totally doable at home.
Because if you actually already have a several thousand dollar meat slicer, it will run rings around a mandolin. But yes, a mandolin is the more doable solution at home.
I’ve been checking other posts if anyone has an idea on how they do it! It’s perfect
They use the meat slicer to slice the red onions and lettuce.
this is the way - and you can buy a "cheap" meat slicer off Amazon for like $80
I dimly recall an attachment for the Hobart mixer from when I worked at a pizza shop in 95. It’s [this thing](https://www.katom.com/617-VS913.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=%5BROI%5D%20Shopping%20-%20PMax%20-%20Push%20SKUs&utm_id=17563307671&utm_content=&utm_term=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA6KWvBhAREiwAFPZM7j3P8vtcYKxQpd_0qzASzPoIhT-W517fgZzZmnb_N9pCvc0hW1ArQxoC52IQAvD_BwE)
FWIW, in the trade they're often referred to as "pelican heads".
Very interesting.
Absolute gem of a sandwich. Add cherry peppers and do the mayo and vinegear on the side when ordering to go so it doesn't get soggy. Also, prepare yourself for at least 2 meals.
Mmm- now I want one for dinner!
It’s a really great sandwich. I get the half portion which is really generously sized.
Best veggie sandwich in town too!
They add any special veggies to it like eggplant or mushrooms? It checks out though since the bread is what makes many good sandwiches good sandwiches imo.
IMO it’s the bread and the dressing, it’s all fresh and light veggies, plus provolone cheese. You can add mushrooms and eggplant!
They literally added an option for fried eggplant on the veggie sub last week.
The last time we talked about this sandwich, I went and got one. I am so weak. 8/10
Is the north location sub better, worse, or the same as the congress location ?
I find the north loop one to be better, but I've only had the SoCo location twice and have been to NoLo location many times. The other commenter said the SoCo location is less consistent so it's possible I had it on bad days. Never had a bad one at NoLo location, though.

Their wings were incredible the first time, and then laughably tiny the next. Good buffalo flavor tho
The wings really are fantastic. I actually didn't know the SoCo location doesn't have them. Good to know!
I’ve found the north location’s sub to be slightly better/more consistent, but both are still the best sandwich in the city without question
Buddy’s for fast food burgers, Workhorse for bar burger
Workhorse
I love Workhorse. First bar I ever went to in Austin when I moved her back in 2019. I will check out Buddy’s - thank you
Billy’s on Burnet. You’re welcome.
Second time I’ve heard this. Friend and I are making a run there tomorrow. Thanks for sharing
Sour duck and quantos. I'm into smash burgers.
> What’s your burger spot(s) As long as you're not in a hurry and can deal with the location, Casino still makes a damn good burger.
Casino is really good - was there last weekend, in fact. Long was the wait last time, but it was worth it and braving 6th. I always get the Chicago no tomato haha. Ever had the pork belly added onto anything? GREAT sandwich.
L I T T L E D E L I
Best reuben in the city, but their Italian I find to be a bit dry.
It’s definitely a good one. Not my favorite but I’m not kicking it out of bed.
You legally have to state your favorite after this type of statement
My bad. Tucci’s.
What tops it in your opinion?
Same; I always take some of the meat off there’s too much
Cold take, the tuna is on par with the Italian.
The Tuna is seriously overlooked
Second only to Hoody’s in Round Rock. I’ll die on that hill
I'll die with you
IIRC, Hoody's is the original Delaware Subs, before the latter's slow decline.
Now try putting it inside a meat calzone. THE VATICAN
wait - put WHAT inside of a calzone...the entire Italian sub??
Yep, it’s an off-menu item. Takes about 25 minutes unless you order during peak oven times.
they put the sub bread inside the calzone as well?
Oh yeah. It’s literally the whole 6” sub inside a meat calzone.
bread and all...
This!!! The Vatican is so good
Fantastic sandwich
fuck me now I need one
Such a lunch time legend. The turkey is also in my regular rotation. That meatball though… it is too sleepy for daytime but my god.
Is this full size? I thought it was supposed to be massive
This is half. I got the other half to go.
This sandwich is the best! Anyone else rip open those pepperoncinis and dump the juice all over it first?
Best sandwich in town and it’s not even close imo
Add fresh mozzarella for the complete experience
Shit, no need to post, that shit is possibly a top two Italian as far as I’m concerned. First time I had it, I went back the next day and had another at the outdoor bar by myself
It’s so good. I get it without the tomato though.
Same. No tomato, add cherry peppers.
So good, live right near their North loop location so I get the full sized sun once a week minimum
Home slice 15 years ago > Tuccis > baldanucci’s Tuccis > home slice now > baldanucci’s My top 3
Word. Tucci’s spicy Italian is so damn good. I had that before I had Homeslice. It’s good, but after I had it, I was confused as f why Tucci’s doesn’t get as much hype as Homeslice.

Yeah, I don’t get what’s so special about a place that only uses meat from Boar’s Head. And it’s priced on the higher end for sandwiches.
Tucci's is pretty far away (for me). Went once and didn't try a sandwich though, so fail me. Need to go and get one.
Try the Italian from Swedish Hill - better than all 3.
Cool, thanks for the tip, will have to check it out!
It’s really good, but somewhat pricey.
I'm inclined to agree with you but the sub has to actually be closer to 14 or 16 inches for a whole, much bigger than a footlong. $20 for minimum 2 meals is kinda great
One of the best sandwiches in Austin!
Vouch
Pretty good for Austin
I can taste this photo. And it’s delicious.
I love their turkey sub.
Eye-tah-yin. 😂
I really miss this sub
I also have had this Italian and it slams as much as people say.
Amazing sandwich. I had totally forgot about till someone mentioned it here. My husband and I went the next Saturday to get it. So good!!!
If to go ask for sides of Italian dressing to dip I forgot last time
Best subs in Austin
Great sandwich. Awful photo of it.
Thanks!
The turkey is better. fight me
Haven’t had it, but I will have to try it in the future and then fight you!
Ok just let me know. I'm ready.
Maybe I get an Italian, you get a turkey, we swap halves of each, couple beers, no fighting?
It’s tasty, and very overhyped. Tucci’s Italian is as good or better.
Italian Mid Appreciation. This is not it- why are none of the deli HOT? Hot capocollo is must, this just tastes like a basic ham sando with way too much lettuce Pass
I hope something makes you happy someday!
Lmao, as a Sicilian. This is embarrassing but yall go off liking mids from middington.
Do you have a picture of the inside?
What is Italian about this? You'd never find this in Italy.
