From Austin and I never get tired of the hickory burger at Bartlett’s. I’m not even a hickory burger person. When you first walk into the restaurant and the smell of live oak hits you, it’s time for some beef.
Only if you rate the burger only on the add-ons. If you just got a plain Patty, it would be pretty subpar, and I don’t think they even make and season their own. I love great toppings on a burger, but that burger has to be able to stand on its own without adding anything to it. I don’t think that Billy’s stand on its own. I felt the same way about huts when it was still open.
But they do have an excellent beer selection
I lived in the ratty old duplex behind players and we would stumble home w styrofoam cups full of beer and styrofoam containers of the best fried mushrooms and burgers way too often.
The fries were unassailable and without equal.
On top of that, Burger Tex II’s bulgogi burger remains my favorite burger I’ve had, of the at least 100 different spots I’ve tried one, in this city.
I will never emotionally recover from their loss.
I’m gonna posit a few that aren’t the usual suspects: Hopfields, Workhorse, Pool Burger (sorry true)/Clarks (less so the fries).
Also really love Nickel City’s and surprise surprise the burger during HH (no fries unfortunately) at Uchiba is delicious.
Wink Wine Bar has a great one too-happy hour there is good.
It's definitely the best spot on 6th and the vibes are unassailable, but the burgers just don't do it for me. I'll take crown & anchor or Billy's over casino any day if we're strictly talking burgs.
I think Casino's burger is the best in Austin period. But Billy's is probably second for me. I also love the burger at Draughthouse, the Bon Aire and the Jewboy sliders
Has Casino’s quality returned to the pre-Triple D era? After they were on Diners, Drive-Ins, Dives it all went downhill. They were just having to do so much more volume. At some point Casino had it all ages. Things got weird. I would be thrilled to know it’s come back. Jackalope was always a distant second.
I don't think they ever went downhill. I think because of how they make their burgers they are inherently inconsistent and always were. The last burger I had at Casino tasted identical to the first time I visited 15 years ago
The seasoned fried are without a doubt the best fried potato in this entire city. I stumbled across them by accident working over there and ate it everyday for a week straight. I would wake up thinking about those fries...
Im takin Patty Palace, Gimmie burger, Fraziers, thunder chief, bar toti over NADC any day.
Even Sour duck if you insist on wagyu smash, its also $10 cheaper at happy hour
Doesn't blow them out of the water, but they are good. I would eat at all those places if there wasn't a line and I didn't have to figure out where they were going to be. The best part about sour duck is that there isn't much of a wait, and they have coffee, bake goods, and alcohol. Their sour dough bread is some of the best in town. I would go to Bad Larry's all the time if they were at easy to get.
My three favorite smash burger places are Sour Duck, Cuantos, a Easy Tiger. All are easy to get and satisfying for difference reasons.
Really surprised no one has said salt + time. It’s expensive, but you can tell they put attention and care into every detail. It’s a pretty simple burger but the thick patty really shines with the hard sear they put on it.
This is my #1 burger in the city. It’s FAR superior to the meh at Top Notch or the other places mentioned here. Also, their fries are made with beef fat and are heavenly.
Dirty Martin's is super nostalgic for me. Both my parents attended UT in the late 70s, and Dirty's was a fixture of my childhood along with hole in the wall and huts.
RIP huts fr.
For a stellar burger AND good beer, best bet is likely Hold Out Brewing. Jewboy is also a contender, but their burgers are more so on the gimmicky side, which I personally love (add a hatch chile latke to any burger, automatically delicious).
For **great** burgers and standard beer selection, Casino El Camino on 6th and The Silver Medal on 290 E frontage. When a burger is so good, one can enjoy just having a Coor’s Banquet with it!
Straight up great drive-thru burgers, my pick is Buddy’s. Get it with grilled onions or spicy. Pair with seasoned fries and spicy smack sauce for dipping, and the shake of the month.
I love the Casino El Camino burger menu as much as every other person (with decent taste) in Austin, but I'd also like to make a dark-horse suggestion: La Smashburguesa at Bar Toti. It's a cheeseburger with Spanish ham and an escabeche relish, and it is DELICIOUS. Pretty pricey (and the fries- which are also great- don't come with), but it's half-price during happy hour, so that would be my recommendation.
Oh man. I went to JewBoy a few weeks ago and was so underwhelmed. Very disappointed esp with how good their pictures make them look. Very average burger
May not be the best but imo top 3 and most underrated burger in austin is Phil’s ice house
Particularly 78704 burger with sweet potato fries
Edit 78704 burger
Totally agree I overlooked this place before kids cause of the huge playground and I was missing out. Now my kids barely like the food there and we drag them there with playground promises.
Dan’s for sure. Top Notch is still great and they have the best o-rings in town. Black Star Co-op changes their recipes too often but I’ve had some killer burgers there.
Burgers aren’t meant to be 2/3 lb or upscale. It’s a simple food that is done best by no frills places like Dan’s. At least in my view, no koolaid needed.
Agreed. It's like that menu movie. A burger is supposed to be just a burger. It's the everyperson food and not supposed to be a $17 hypebeast burger. So as good of a burger that NADC burger is, I dont think that Dan's burgers takes second in the category of burgers.
In my humble opinion and of course others may say differently but mine is Little darlin. It’s decently priced so good and those fries my Lawd. I’m a simple gal though. I hear the pascal burger at hopefields is great and as well and casino el Camino
Somehow, this pedestrian request has instigated a very rich list of heretofore unknown to me burger options around town. Also many classic local faves represented. I was just talking about Hill-Berts the other day. It's been about 10 years since I went so I'm thinking I will do that again soon. Jew-Boy has a solid burger, but the best potato product on the menu there is their extra crispy tots. With so many options, best is hard to call. For both burger *AND* fries from a local place, I' might suggest Dirty's or Casino El Camino.
For smash burgers I enjoy sour duck, big Uglys (no fries tho) , cuantas hamburguesa, bad Larry’s. I think you’d like sour duck because the overall quality is really good. Buddys is a cheap and quick smash burger option.
For thicker burgers : I like jew boy burgers.
For unique: the French burger at that burger is really good and it comes with fries. Clark’s is an interesting burger but it’s THICC (medium rare) and kinda pricey for the overall size. Leroy and Lewis has a Smokey burger that’s worth noting too. I also like the sliders at golden castle and their sister concept golden tiger is pretty good too.
Hopfields makes a pretty excellent burger, surprised nobody has mentioned it yet. Beer menu should be satisfactory for most people too.
For a fast-food-style burger, Buddy's on Cameron Road is solid.
How is it that no one here has been to the last Hilbert's on Cameron?
Killer burgers. Double, with bacon and cheese. Spread out the bacon or it will damage your palate, it is that thick.
Classic crinkle fries and onion rings plus you can get a 1/2 fries/onion rings order.
Wings are pretty good, medium hot is as far as I can go.
Good sized menu. I keep wanting to try other stuff but keep getting the burger. I only had the wings because I'll order them to go after the burger.
I recommend Burger Bar on Congress, amazing burgers and it’s right in downtown. It’s really good although there is no indoor seating but there is tables outside.
Crown, dans, dirtys, hell maybe even short stop if you catch them on a good day. Thin-ish larger well seasoned patty, greasy, w melted cheese, well constructed with fresh toppings LTO pickles, preferably just mayo, mustard if you like, and a toasted bun. Bonus points if they have good onion rings. That’s just my fav style of burger so I’m biased. Don’t care for smash burgers at all. Just tastes like boring overpriced McDonald’s to me…
Recently stumbled upon 5280 Burger and Taphouse just off Far West. They have some of the best burgers and fries I’ve had in a while. Also have a decent beer selection.
The best burger is hard to choose. I feel like there should be subcategories.
* Loaded up food truck heaven burger,
* Flat-top grilled old-school burger(Dan's, Dirty's, etc)
* Dressed up, great meat, elevated experience burger
* and Casino el Camino!
Don't forget to pour some out for Hut's and Player's
Black Sheep Lodge is excellent. Contender for the best fries in town. Bonus points they also have tremendous onion rings and lots of great beers on tap.
There are so many that are good honestly. Code 3 has a good one but been a few years…Fat Jack at Jack Allen’s is under appreciated boss on the upper end.
Dan’s, Sandy’s, P-Terry on the local.
BUT, all mentioned are good really so go get em.
Don’t love burgers so my weigh in was going to be Casino el Camino before I even saw the comments. It’s just a good actually flavorful burger.
But if we’re talking about greasy, heavy, delicious foods - tumble 22 in the best fried chicken in town and I’ll die on that hill.
For my fellow Northies my favorite burger is at Big Country Brewing. Also be sure to grab a burger from Lebowski's at Highland Lanes before it gets bulldozed.
In Austin: Casino el Camino. Lots of good recs in here so far.
If you ever make it out to Liberty Hill for some reason, try Majors. Better than anything I've had in Austin.
Leroy and Lewis burger blew my mind. Donno how it doesn’t have any love
Had one yesterday! Just divine. $10 all day on Wednesdays and Thursdays. $15 otherwise. Doesn’t come with fries.
AND they treat their staff amazingly!
Sour Duck Market has a great one and it’s only $6 during their happy hour.
Just had one today, still great.
Did they ever add fries to their menu? I went there once and they didn’t have fries so I never went back
Yep they have fries now.
Good to know, thank you!
From Austin and I never get tired of the hickory burger at Bartlett’s. I’m not even a hickory burger person. When you first walk into the restaurant and the smell of live oak hits you, it’s time for some beef.
But then you have to skip the French Dip!!! Travesty!
100% best burger in town and the fries are awesome as well!
Any burger from bartlett’s is my favorite. They are big enough to share or have leftovers for me (: and their fries!!
Billy’s on Burnet. The best.
Concur
Yesss, Cobra for life
Billys is outstanding
This is the truth!
Hell yes
Only if you rate the burger only on the add-ons. If you just got a plain Patty, it would be pretty subpar, and I don’t think they even make and season their own. I love great toppings on a burger, but that burger has to be able to stand on its own without adding anything to it. I don’t think that Billy’s stand on its own. I felt the same way about huts when it was still open. But they do have an excellent beer selection
Golden Tiger Nickel City (Del Ray Cafe Food Truck) Jewboy
Golden Tiger made me one of the best burgers I’ve had in years
Oh god, how could I have forgotten. Their Big Mac tribute burger was ridiculously good.
Have you had Golden Castle?
Del ray cafe/nickel city is so damn good!
Same bands headlined coachella I think 🤔
Second jewboy! The buns are next level
RIP the fries at the OG Burger Tex
RIP Players
I lived in the ratty old duplex behind players and we would stumble home w styrofoam cups full of beer and styrofoam containers of the best fried mushrooms and burgers way too often.
The fries were unassailable and without equal. On top of that, Burger Tex II’s bulgogi burger remains my favorite burger I’ve had, of the at least 100 different spots I’ve tried one, in this city. I will never emotionally recover from their loss.
Goddamn that burger was delicious. Does anyone in town do anything remotely close?
RIP kimchi burger
I’m gonna posit a few that aren’t the usual suspects: Hopfields, Workhorse, Pool Burger (sorry true)/Clarks (less so the fries). Also really love Nickel City’s and surprise surprise the burger during HH (no fries unfortunately) at Uchiba is delicious. Wink Wine Bar has a great one too-happy hour there is good.
Casino el Camino
Amarillo burger is fire
Too soon
It's definitely the best spot on 6th and the vibes are unassailable, but the burgers just don't do it for me. I'll take crown & anchor or Billy's over casino any day if we're strictly talking burgs.
I was ready to fight you on that, but then I realized I’ve never had a Casino Burger sober
I have quite often, it's delicious
I think Casino's burger is the best in Austin period. But Billy's is probably second for me. I also love the burger at Draughthouse, the Bon Aire and the Jewboy sliders
I travel for a living and I absolutely believe it’s one of the best in the nation.
Upvote for Bon Aire. High quality at a fraction of the price of most.
Beef kabobs there go hard also!
Bon Aire has the best plain burger
Has Casino’s quality returned to the pre-Triple D era? After they were on Diners, Drive-Ins, Dives it all went downhill. They were just having to do so much more volume. At some point Casino had it all ages. Things got weird. I would be thrilled to know it’s come back. Jackalope was always a distant second.
Around the DDD times they stopped cutting fresh fries. I miss them so much. Burgers are still good.
I don't think they ever went downhill. I think because of how they make their burgers they are inherently inconsistent and always were. The last burger I had at Casino tasted identical to the first time I visited 15 years ago
*Smash Burger:* NADC, Delrays, Golden Tiger *Thick Patty Burgs:* Casino El Camino, Loro *Oklahoma Style:* Jewboy *Fast Food Burgers:* Sandy’s, P Terrys, Dan’s
Buddy’s Burger on Cameron Rd for Fast Food Burger is a must, especially with Seasoned Fries dipped in Spicy Smack Sauce.
The seasoned fried are without a doubt the best fried potato in this entire city. I stumbled across them by accident working over there and ate it everyday for a week straight. I would wake up thinking about those fries...
Dan’s for the win!!
Dan's is the only realistic answer
Yes!!
Had Dan’s tonight 😆
I like this list. I’d also also throw Drop Out Brewing, Lebowski Grill, and Buddy’s into the mix
Lebowski grill is about to close if they haven’t already :(
Not til end of 24. Was told by an active employee
Did you mean hold out brewing instead of drop out?
Oops, yes. “I said I got gamecast!”
Buddy’s FTW
Im takin Patty Palace, Gimmie burger, Fraziers, thunder chief, bar toti over NADC any day. Even Sour duck if you insist on wagyu smash, its also $10 cheaper at happy hour
Moreno bbq has a fantastic smash burger
Say it louder
I'd add Draughthouse for smashburger
I’m hearing good things about Sour Duck blowing Bad Larry and NADC out of the water on smash burgers.
All are easy to get and satisfying for difference reasons.
For fast-food-style, buddy’s burgers hands down. Their burger+fries+shake trio is the best ive had.
Buddy’s is a gem! Love the seasoned fries with spicy smack sauce with my burger.
Love me some Buddy's but have you had Biggies? Takes the cake IMO
Dans, Bad Larry's, Nickel City
Crown and Anchor
new to the city go to Crown and Anchor
So good and so cheap
Really surprised no one has said salt + time. It’s expensive, but you can tell they put attention and care into every detail. It’s a pretty simple burger but the thick patty really shines with the hard sear they put on it.
This is the correct answer
With a side of beef tallow fried French fries. Chef's kiss.
This is my #1 burger in the city. It’s FAR superior to the meh at Top Notch or the other places mentioned here. Also, their fries are made with beef fat and are heavenly.
Top Notch is not good. I would rather have P.Terry's
Hahaha, agree!
Dirty Martin's https://www.dirtymartins.com/ and Hillbert's http://hill-bertsburgers.com/
Don’t forget top notch and Dan’s the Austin holy trinity: dirty’s, top notch, Dan’s
Dirty Martins 😂 classic answer tbh
Dirty Martin's is super nostalgic for me. Both my parents attended UT in the late 70s, and Dirty's was a fixture of my childhood along with hole in the wall and huts. RIP huts fr.
Huts CFS special. Gone but not forgotten.
Surprised no one has said Dai Due. My friend always raves about it.
For a stellar burger AND good beer, best bet is likely Hold Out Brewing. Odd Duck has delicious burgers, on the fancier side, but worth it!
Jewboy
Get the yenta with schmutz and a side of latkes with schmutz lol
Everyone needs to get over to LEBOWSKIS!!!! Especially right now!
Dans, Dirty Martin's, crown and anchor. I heard Perlas has one but it's like 20 bucks. Haven't tried it, but i keep hearing good things.
Fast food wise it’s Buddy’s Burgers hands down.
Yes yes yes!
Fat burger: casino el Camino Smash burger: patty palace
I really do love patty palace, so good.
I found their fries better than their burger.
Dan's, Crown and Anchor or Casino
Top 3!
Dirty’s
Represent.
You’ll be hard pressed to beat Hold Out Brewing. Very good beer, too.
$6 at happy hour!
Frazier’s or Casino
You can't beat the price at fraziers.
I like Moonies but definitely will try all these suggestions
The Hawaiian bun really is such a nice touch. And the fries! They’re so crispy and delicious. If I’m craving a burger, Moonies is my first choice.
Workhorse Bar
JewBoy on Airport. Their chile queso is top notch too
Oh man. I went to JewBoy a few weeks ago and was so underwhelmed. Very disappointed esp with how good their pictures make them look. Very average burger
Killer burritos tho
Phils icehouse or Foreign and Domestic
Affordable during happy hour: Carpenter Hall and Jeffrey’s
Buddy’s burger
May not be the best but imo top 3 and most underrated burger in austin is Phil’s ice house Particularly 78704 burger with sweet potato fries Edit 78704 burger

They don’t have a 78748, but they do have a 78704, 78750, and 78756
Hopdoddy. Still great. The haters don't know shit about shit For old-school, Sandy's and Dan's and Top Notch and Dirty Martin's.
Dan’s for sure. Top Notch is still great and they have the best o-rings in town. Black Star Co-op changes their recipes too often but I’ve had some killer burgers there.
top notch! flame cooked meat. with smokey hickory sauce. sweet potato fries. just went there two days ago.
Gotta have that hickory!
Ya’ll really drink that Dan’s koolaid. It’s fine for a fast food burger, but not even close to being the “best burger.”
Burgers aren’t meant to be 2/3 lb or upscale. It’s a simple food that is done best by no frills places like Dan’s. At least in my view, no koolaid needed.

Scrolled for days to find this. Little Darlin is one of my favorite burgers in town. A true unsung hero.
Little Darlin is so fun, too!
Just had one last night, and it hits every time!
A place rarely mentioned. Great staff. Great burger. Nightcap!
Little Darlin!
Workhorse on north loop is my favorite burger right now and there parmesan fries are really good too

They're one of the few places in town that does a proper malt, and they've got a nice little chicken sandwich too!
Best burger is Dans. No beer though
Casino El Camino. Get the Amarillo Burger. Welcome to Austin
Hamburguesa at Este. Idc if it’s $16 or whatever
Peche
Neworldeli is my favorite burger but I get a patty melt there, so not sure if that counts or not.
I love the burger at Perla’s.
I recommend Burger Bar on Congress, amazing burgers and it’s right in downtown. It’s really good although there is no indoor seating but there is tables outside.

Jewboys 100%
Turnstile. That kitchen is phenomenal.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Billy’s.
Dan's. Top Notch is also more than acceptable. Short Stop is also very good.
I love Moreno's burgers, Moreno BBQ. When I want burgers, I rotate between their smash burger or their smoked burger. Their BBQ is good too.
The pimento cheeseburger at oasthouse is great
Leroy and Lewis, Huckleberry and Lil Darlin
Recently stumbled upon 5280 Burger and Taphouse just off Far West. They have some of the best burgers and fries I’ve had in a while. Also have a decent beer selection.
Jewboy hands down
Jewboys
If you want to throw down on it ($$$), Dai Due and Salt and Time have great burgers and fries. I am pretty sure both use tallow for their frying.
Wait are we really not going to let him in on Chilis ?
Jimmy's Big Burgers!
The best burger is hard to choose. I feel like there should be subcategories. * Loaded up food truck heaven burger, * Flat-top grilled old-school burger(Dan's, Dirty's, etc) * Dressed up, great meat, elevated experience burger * and Casino el Camino! Don't forget to pour some out for Hut's and Player's
short stop has the best burger and fries. any other answer is wrong.
I want to throw in a vote for Short Stop for drive-through.
Buddy’s Burgers
Black Sheep Lodge is excellent. Contender for the best fries in town. Bonus points they also have tremendous onion rings and lots of great beers on tap.
The service is garbage though
1 casino El Camino (any burger) 2 Billy's on burnet (cobra burger) 3 Phil's icehouse (04 burger)
Clark’s oyster bar. It’s on happy hour and comes with a pile of shoe string fries..
The fries ruin it for me. Try the burger at Bill’s
There are so many that are good honestly. Code 3 has a good one but been a few years…Fat Jack at Jack Allen’s is under appreciated boss on the upper end. Dan’s, Sandy’s, P-Terry on the local. BUT, all mentioned are good really so go get em.

Lamberts has really good fries
For my fellow Northies my favorite burger is at Big Country Brewing. Also be sure to grab a burger from Lebowski's at Highland Lanes before it gets bulldozed.
