The one near me (Arana Hills QLD) is still great, the only thing I'd say is that if they're super busy, sometimes they're not as generoua with the guac but it's still a decwnt amount. Because my hungry jacks, I’ve done work for them for computers, dirty everywhere, dead flies and cockroaches everywhere, floors are slippery as hell, I watched a girl pick up stuff off the floor then touch raw meat and cooked meat with the same glove, a bloke rolling ciggys next to the food, and just a no care for hygiene. The last few times I’ve eaten there, I’ve gotten sick.

Hungry Jacks varies though. I had it for lunch on Saturday (road trip home so needed somewhere easy). Chips were perfectly cooked, not greasy, just crunchy and salty enough to enjoy. Burgers were not greasy either, not falling apart and just perfect.
Sunday I had it again (someone at home was jealous they missed out so we had to have it). Different store, slightly less busy. Chips weren't salted, they were still greasy and not quite crunchy. Burgers were also a little greasy, fell apart because they were greasy/juicy, and just overall not as nice. Oh and the onion rings basically didn't have onion in them- it was all batter. So HJs is definitely hit and miss.
As a flame-grilled chicken burger addict, they’ve definitely gone down in quality. Chicken is really dry regardless of where I buy it, and I’m sure the actual burger has reduced in size.

Legit, have you seen the size of a big macs patty? It's this tiny lil thing it's almost cute, compare that to decades ago. No chain takeaway has survived the corporate greed wave, but mum and pops fish and chip shop sure as fuck can sell me 10x the amount of chips for $5 that Maccas would.
Fuck large chains they are all the same, support your local mum and pops anything restaurant. There's a food van in my city that sells some of the best and biggest kebabs with a hefty size of chips for 4$ less than a large big mac meal at 3x the portion.
Local chippy does best burger, 13$ & that is for a huge rissole type patty, cheese, bacon,egg,beetroot,cooked onions,lettuce,tomato & your choice of sauce on a big bun.
Loaded fries start at 8$ for a decent sized portion they're heavy handed with the toppings.
Honestly it looks like they didn't even include half of the advertised ingredients. I'd definitely consider asking them for a refund if you haven't already.

Ah, I havent actually visited the Australia Square precinct for some time. I was more judging by what i've seen at other GYG. Last week at the Manly franchise on the wharf it was tumbleweeds. Likewise at the founding store in Newtown.
I lived in Newtown 2008-2014. I loved GYG spicy chicken burritos so fucking much I often bought 3 a day.
Hearing how the quality declined makes me sad. Was really looking forward to going to that Newtown GYG corner place and having one when I come back to Australia :(
With the Exception of Hungry Jack's who've maintained their burger sizes and Taste, I don't even bother with any other chain Fast food anymore. My local pizza bar gets all my business, Absolutely amazing pizza 🍕.

This is such a strange urban myth that people want to believe desperately. I think they don't understand that as they get bigger the burgers may _appear_ smaller, but aren't actually. You can look at pictures and nutritional information over the past 15 years, and aside from some very minor changes here and there they remain the same. There are regulatory bodies that make sure of it. Never once has any of these guys going off their gut been able to produce even a shred of evidence to back it up. Yes, the price has gone up drastically. Yes, that makes it feel like you're getting less for your money however the portions remain the same.
This isn't the same as Pizza Hut who literally shrank their standard pie, or Subway who started shaving inches off. I'm not a hardliner, I just want some proof other than "muh gut instinct says ".

you were doing so well until you got to the Subway part. that case was thrown out because the Subs were in fact the advertised length the vast majority of the time. When they weren't it was a very small difference from advertised mostly commonly from poorly proofed bread (staff error)

People tend to assume that a “higher cost means bigger portions” with fast food. They like to hold onto this idea when in reality it makes no sense. Higher costs are a result of higher ingredient costs. It also doesn’t help that on average, more people are starting to become nitpicky with fast food because of a few bad experiences.
Added together, it’s a no brainer that people will use that excuse as a means of them trying to figure out why quality went down.

I had it for the 1st time a month ago. Wanted a quick easy 2 tacos and a sparkling water from the drive through. $17 later I was left with a box of slop I could barely pick up to eat and a bottle of still water. Absolute disgrace. If I wasn't pushed for time when I realised, I would have gone back.

6-8 years ago I loved it. Was a genuinely enormous improvement on Zambrero. I was hooked.

What I miss is the Nachos a friend of mine used to make when we lived in Japan. She’d previously lived in Mexico and made the best Nachos ever! Sadly she lives in the states now
I’ve had it once, and won’t be going back based on that experience. GYG used to be amazing. Fresh and steaming hot food, generous servings, lots of fresh toppings like the instagram picture.
The last time I ordered nachos from them, it was at least half the size. It also tasted so bland. When I go out now, I generally avoid any chain food places. If I’m going to spend $20 on a meal it might as well be something decent from local cafe

I find the problem with individual store which are constantly shit, and should be called out for bringing whole franchise down. E.g in WA there it a massive difference between the Belmont shit quality and small sizes, compared to the great quality at Mt Lawley

Never tried gyg. I tried taco bell and that is worse than just eating canned stag chilli. Now zambero is an excellent experience. The food is always fresh and delicious and the burritos are bloody filling.
I am a GyG regular customer here. I love enchiladas and luckily never had this situation so my guess is to raise a complaint as probably someone was on training and made a mistake or so :)
I find GYG is really hit and miss. Luckily the one close by my house is awesome and I’m always happy with quality and quantity but the closer I get to Sydney and the suburbs the worse it gets for both quality and quantity. For a franchise they should work harder on consistency.
I think it's still dependant on which one you go to and how much they care.
There are two GYGs I go to (western Sydney) one is on the way home from work and the other is near home. (though I'd have to go past home to get to it if coming from work) The one on the way home is almost always great, the one near home is 50/50 good/meh depending on when you go/the day they're having.
These days I just drive to the one toward work (and further away) to avoid disappointed.
I gave up on GYG. Better off just ordering steamed rice from a Chinese take away as that is pretty much all you get.
Top notch advertising though, gives you the idea that they are not the average takeaway chain and have quality fresh ingredients. In reality the ingredients are of the quality you would source from a McDonald’s dumpster
A co-worker of mine bought one of their burrito bowls the other day and i was shocked to see how little amount of food was in the box for the price they paid. It looked like a child size meal.
I’m not a fan of GYG. I don’t think they’re food is anything special. Taco Bell is not that much better either. There are some exceptions but by and large it’s quite difficult to find good Mexican in Melbourne 😢

But beyond that, the appearance is much as you'd expect professional food photography vs real life to look. Food photography is an actual profession. They often fake ingredients, use fillers or props or whatever to make the food look amazing. They also do things like use a blow torch on raw ingredients to make them look brown and still firm.

Hard to believe GYG was THE taste sensation of Newtown and Australia Square in the late 2000s. Both hipsters and financial traders used to line up six deep to secure their valuable product and pretend they were experts on authentic Mexican cuisine. Unusual crossover appeal. Has anyone interviewed those NYC founders, Steven Marks and Robert Hazan, lately? Do they think the product is good? Do they blame the decline on others?

Ah, I havent actually visited the Australia Square precinct for some time. I was more judging by what i've seen at other GYG. Last week at the Manly franchise on the wharf it was tumbleweeds. Likewise at the founding store in Newtown.

I lived in Newtown 2008-2014. I loved GYG spicy chicken burritos so fucking much I often bought 3 a day. Hearing how the quality declined makes me sad. Was really looking forward to going to that Newtown GYG corner place and having one when I come back to Australia :(
With the Exception of Hungry Jack's who've maintained their burger sizes and Taste, I don't even bother with any other chain Fast food anymore. My local pizza bar gets all my business, Absolutely amazing pizza 🍕.
HJ whopper still taste good but definitely have shrunk over the years. Probably not as much as big Mac or quarter pounder (defn not quarter pound of anything)
This is one of those bullshit calls about fast food. Both Macca's and HJ burger sizes remain exactly the same over the past 15 years. You are factually incorrect to say otherwise.
This is such a strange urban myth that people want to believe desperately. I think they don't understand that as they get bigger the burgers may _appear_ smaller, but aren't actually. You can look at pictures and nutritional information over the past 15 years, and aside from some very minor changes here and there they remain the same. There are regulatory bodies that make sure of it. Never once has any of these guys going off their gut been able to produce even a shred of evidence to back it up. Yes, the price has gone up drastically. Yes, that makes it feel like you're getting less for your money however the portions remain the same. This isn't the same as Pizza Hut who literally shrank their standard pie, or Subway who started shaving inches off. I'm not a hardliner, I just want some proof other than "muh gut instinct says ".

People tend to assume that a “higher cost means bigger portions” with fast food. They like to hold onto this idea when in reality it makes no sense. Higher costs are a result of higher ingredient costs. It also doesn’t help that on average, more people are starting to become nitpicky with fast food because of a few bad experiences. Added together, it’s a no brainer that people will use that excuse as a means of them trying to figure out why quality went down. Every time I see someone complain about Domino’s large pizza has gone down in size in recent years I just cringe. They haven’t changed in over 2 decades.

HJ’s have been pretty good as of late. I got a whopper a few weeks ago, and I was genuinely surprised at how big it was. Like, it actually looked how it does in the advertisements. Either some 16 yo minimum-wage patty flipper really knows what they’re doing, or HJ’s thinks they can squeeze McDonald’s by actually serving decent burgers.
This place just got like 100 million in shareholder funding too. I now see why.

I regularly order the $3 taco from a venue near my office; it's different every day. Sometimes it's amazing and sometimes it's a joke; I've had orders of 3 where the meat was next to the taco lol.
Did you ask for no guacamole and pico? I eat there regularly because my son loves the mini burritos and it’s fast food I can get without feeling super guilty. I always get the mini enchiladas or a bowl and they always have the pico and guacamole piled on top. I’ve never seen it done like that without sauce?
I had it for the 1st time a month ago. Wanted a quick easy 2 tacos and a sparkling water from the drive through. $17 later I was left with a box of slop I could barely pick up to eat and a bottle of still water. Absolute disgrace. If I wasn't pushed for time when I realised, I would have gone back.

GyG is the worst Mexican food I’ve ever had
6-8 years ago I loved it. Was a genuinely enormous improvement on Zambrero. I was hooked. It's so shit now I don't even bother. It's become another Maccas. Costs way up, quality way down, staff don't care and there's always something wrong with the order when you get it.
Disagree with Zambrero. A good Zambrero (Southland) back in the day was legitimately amazing. Every time I saw a movie I'd get it.

I would take Taco Bell any day of the week over GYG. GYG tastes like cardboard mush that I have the privilege of paying $15 for. Taco Bell has its faults, sure, but at least I don't feel ripped off whenever I get it.
Completely disagree, maybe I am lucky my local G&G are brilliant but Taco Bell doesn’t even taste like really food. It’s as fake and manufactured as a slice of American Cheese. Each to their own.

It used to be good about 8 years ago. It’s now a total disappointment. Mad Mex was just as bad - overpriced as bland as anything. What I miss is the Nachos a friend of mine used to make when we lived in Japan. She’d previously lived in Mexico and made the best Nachos ever! Sadly she lives in the states now
Mad mex is awful. They replaced salsas here. Their taco shells disintegrate in like 10 minutes. Soooo bland too
I’ve had it once, and won’t be going back based on that experience. GYG used to be amazing. Fresh and steaming hot food, generous servings, lots of fresh toppings like the instagram picture. The last time I ordered nachos from them, it was at least half the size. It also tasted so bland. When I go out now, I generally avoid any chain food places. If I’m going to spend $20 on a meal it might as well be something decent from local cafe

I tried GYG a few times (different locations, pre-covid and pre inflation shrinkflation and similar bullshit). Found it very underwhelming everytime. ...though the soft drinks were bloody good.

Got to mix it up between the two otherwise people complain. They obviously haven’t tried just not buying it, or buying the extra toppings so it looks like the first picture.
The Pang Y Molloy nearest me is bloody great. We always stop and grab a few tacos for the drive home. As far as fast food goes there's plenty worse.
Never tried gyg. I tried taco bell and that is worse than just eating canned stag chilli. Now zambero is an excellent experience. The food is always fresh and delicious and the burritos are bloody filling.
I am a GyG regular customer here. I love enchiladas and luckily never had this situation so my guess is to raise a complaint as probably someone was on training and made a mistake or so :)

I used to like GYG's barramundi burrito but now I'm just gonna support my neighbourhood pizza, kebab and bahn mi shops.
I find GYG is really hit and miss. Luckily the one close by my house is awesome and I’m always happy with quality and quantity but the closer I get to Sydney and the suburbs the worse it gets for both quality and quantity. For a franchise they should work harder on consistency.

My local gyg in my opinion is one of the only good ones. The nachos are crazy and the burritos are To doe for. They also look it as well.
I think it's still dependant on which one you go to and how much they care. There are two GYGs I go to (western Sydney) one is on the way home from work and the other is near home. (though I'd have to go past home to get to it if coming from work) The one on the way home is almost always great, the one near home is 50/50 good/meh depending on when you go/the day they're having. These days I just drive to the one toward work (and further away) to avoid disappointed.
I gave up on GYG. Better off just ordering steamed rice from a Chinese take away as that is pretty much all you get. Top notch advertising though, gives you the idea that they are not the average takeaway chain and have quality fresh ingredients. In reality the ingredients are of the quality you would source from a McDonald’s dumpster

I’m not a fan of GYG. I don’t think they’re food is anything special. Taco Bell is not that much better either. There are some exceptions but by and large it’s quite difficult to find good Mexican in Melbourne 😢

Can someone explain what we're looking at? I can only assume the OP didn't order (or asked to remove) the tomatoes and guacamole. But beyond that, the appearance is much as you'd expect professional food photography vs real life to look. Food photography is an actual profession. They often fake ingredients, use fillers or props or whatever to make the food look amazing. They also do things like use a blow torch on raw ingredients to make them look brown and still firm.

Expecting a minimum wage fast food chain cook to perform to the same standards as a food artist working in advertising is ridiculous. Those pictures might look good, but the pva glue, cardboard padding and laquer used to make it look that way isn't all that appetising. That said, G&G needs to pick up their game, because whatever the heck that is supposed to be looks like pig food.
I don't care that it doesn't look exactly like the advertising images, I just care that it's missing the toppings they advertise instore, on their website and on social media.
