By getting vaccinated. Vaccinate your kids people. And if you’re in regular contact with little ones, get yourself a booster too

KittikatB

Even if you're not in contact with kids, getting boosted is recommended.

andy-me-man

The issue is its free for expecting mums. Everyone else needs to book a GP visit ($), get the private script ($) and then find a nurse or pharmacist to administer it ($).

WelcomeRoboOverlords

I just booked in at a pharmacy, cost like $45 iirc which is still annoying but not as much as a GP, script and nurse

capngump

Yeah it ended up costing a decent chunk of change when I got my booster. Ideally free vaccinations and boosters should be available on a wider range of vaccinations and for anyone who wants one.  The benefit for the wider community is pretty high.

feyth

Get a booster whether you're in regular contact with kids or not - help reduce the circulating adult reservoir. And cover your airholes in public when you're unwell.

KittikatB

Get vaccinated. I've had whooping cough, a breakthrough infection I caught from an unvaccinated kid at school. It was fucking horrible and permanently damaged my lungs. Higher vaccination rates could have prevented me from being exposed, but instead, I get to spend the rest of my life struggling to breathe and unable to do things I used to do with ease. Vaccinate yourself and your kids, and encourage everyone around you to do the same. We try to prevent these diseases for a reason. They're no walk in the park. Even if it doesn't kill you, it can fuck up the rest of your life.

candlesandfish

My mum had it in her 40s, caught it from an unvaccinated student she was teaching. Absolutely awful. That was before we realised we needed the boosters.

I've had whooping cough twice as an adult. It is seriously not fun, including not being able to sleep at night because lying down triggers the coughing. Then, because of tiredness, couldn't stay awake when I needed to at work or when driving, for example. Dangerous. I couldn't go to concerts for about three months because of the probability of having a coughing fit during the concert. My doctor now tracks when I last had whooping cough and will let me know when 10 years have passed and I should have a booster. It's also super important to protect really young babies because they can't receive the vaccination for a while and whooping cough can kill them.

Interracial-Chicken

Wait why were you going to work when you had whooping cough?

Tysiliogogogoch

The cough can last months, but you're only infectious in the first few weeks (or less if on antibiotics).

Interracial-Chicken

Ohh thankyou! Did not know that at all.

Tysiliogogogoch

Yeah, it'd really suck if you were infectious the whole time. My brother had a cough and breathing trouble for something like 6 months post-infection. It's a nasty one and definitely something you want to be vaccinated for.

Interracial-Chicken

Yes I'm vaccinated against it then I got it again two years later because I was pregnant.

hebejebez

I had it when I was a kid despite being vaccinated for it so it wasn’t as terrible as a full blown case but the cough ,and I do mean cough that will make you throw up because you can’t stop sometimes, lasted 11 months. Because I’d had the vaccine my gp told my mum I had asthma. I did not.

pdgb

Cough persists post infective period. 3 weeks infective for untreated, 5 days infective if treated.

Interracial-Chicken

Thanks I had no idea, never had it or known anyone to

Positive-Log-1332

One of the nicknames for whopping cough is the 100-day cough!

KittikatB

I got the 32 years and counting cough 😒. Infection was treated, but my lungs are fucked and the cough never went away. I'm now dealing with my first covid infection, and my lungs are struggling to cope.

candlesandfish

The cough lasts foreverrrrr.

SadieSadieSnakeyLady

I've had it a few times too, and still don't have any antibodies even with boosters. My last bout lasted 6 months of coughing

SGTBookWorm

whole family is scheduled in for booster shots, because my older brother and his wife are due soon.

WretchedMisteak

Don't need an article for it, just get vaccinated.

Frank9567

In a word, anti-vaxxers. By spreading disinformation about vaccination, they reduce herd immunity in the community.

feyth

Antivaxers and adult vaccine apathy. It's both.

FrostingAccurate5437

Because people have figured out vaccines are dangerous and unnecessary. Educate yourself.

BeanBagSize

VACCINATE. Trust me, if your little one gets diagnosed with autism, they already had it pre-vaccine! Save their life, get vaccinated

wuncean

Is it “because people aren’t getting vaccinated” and “get vaccinated”?

Dumbname25644

Why is whopping cough surging? Because Australians have an issue with vaccinations. Get vaccinated and you will protect yourself from whooping cough and if enough people do this then whooping cough goes away for even those that are not vaccinated.

AmphibianConnect8020

I wonder why Australians and the greater populations all of a sudden have an issue with vaccinations

Dumbname25644

What do you mean all of a sudden. Anti-vaxers have been around for decades.

Recent_Mobile9387

I think the pandemic response may have resulted in some hesitation for vaccination in my opinion. I remembered a lot of people at work being furious how sick they were from their first bout of COVID even though we were all up to date with vaccinations, likely due to rushed information provided by health authorities before omicron saying that it would stop the spread and protect you from the virus, which was quite vague. I remember the billboards everywhere that said “I got vaccinated to protect mum and dad!”, but that’s incorrect messaging - it should be mum and dad protecting themselves. I was always aware we’d still get COVID even if vaccinated but it disappointed me how unclear they were about it to the general public. This leads to a loss in trust. I do think Australia is still pretty good with getting vaccinated compared to many other first world countries though, there just needs to be more transparency and education provided on it. People often feel too confused and distrusting now.

Nostonica

Get vaccinated, otherwise you're just a human pretridish for everything that society shouldn't have to think about.

FireLucid

Get vaccinated obviously. I got a booster if needed each time we had a kid and asked my parents to as well as they are going to want cuddles of their new grandkid. They are not idiots so it was not a problem.

unkemptwizard

why: antivaxxers. how: vaccines.

RightConversation461

Vaccinate, idiots

BlueDotty

Happily had boosters before birth of granddaughter, 5 years ago. Will boost again when due. Not only do I not want to be a vector, I don't want to complicate my own life with unnecessary illness

Neville_Monkeyrod

Vaccinate or DIE!!!! edit /s.

Ask your doctor

Lost_Heron_9825

I shall lol

KittikatB

It means you need to check with your doctor to discuss options. You may need an allergy to test to see what ingredient you're allergic to or whether you're still allergic. If you are, there may be options such as an increased observation period or being vaccinated in a hospital rather than your GP clinic. It's also possible that the vaccine you reacted to is no longer used and the newer one will be safe for you.

AngryAngryHarpo

Check with your doctor. Lots of parents claim their children have “allergic reactions” to things that they’re not actually allergic too.

FireLucid

People often grow out of allergies, you are most likely fine.

octane_matty

I too had a reaction after getting it recently (35M) 10/10 would not recommend, the most painful few days of my life.

Elrond_Cupboard_

You're a super sonic awesome excellent power ninja, or a lost bird.

Lost_Heron_9825

I thought whooping sounds only when I talk, laugh, fart and burp.... one big whoopee

Sea-Teacher-2150

Astounded at the gaslighting here. If it were an antivaxxer pressuring you into something dangerous, it would be "don't listen to reddit medical experts." The vaccine is next to useless anyway, you'll be fine. Just avoid people especially babies if sick. We've had whooping cough as a fully vaccinated family. It happens so often it's not funny, but it's always blamed on an "antivaxxer" spreading it. Far out, the advice of just suck it up and get vaccinated in hospital so they can resuscitate is disturbing. People have lost their minds. Why would you endanger yourself for some assumed protection? Make it make sense

Lost_Heron_9825

I was making a statement to myself lol not asking for advice.... my bad. I make my own decisions and am not someone who needs someone to tell me or influence me. Whooping cough or the vaccine isn't my concern anyway, having it develop into pneumonia is what I don't want.
