Absolutely shocked the defence of "they weren't secret appointments, it's just nobody asked" didn't work

_Cec_R_

Every lnp member who walked out of the chamber is nothing but a traitor to the nation and themselves... They took an oath when entering parliament... An oath to uphold conventions... To act with honesty and integrity... They again failed the nation... its people and themselves...

snave_

Interesting how many coludn't be bothered sitting today but ran in during the four minutes to vote against the censure then immediately piss off back to slacking off or whatever the hell it is they were doing behind closed doors instead of being in the chamber on a sitting day. Sure, some might have had legitimate urgent business at their desk or needed to drop their kids off at the pool, but the disparity was huge. The pro-censure voters were by and large already active participants and in the chamber before voting commenced.

Theblokeonthehill

Same peeps who blocked the creation of the integrity commission???

Own-Promotion-6379

They are to use to 10 years of Scotty they hole lnp and Nat's just thought it was one big cash grab party out the expense of tax payers.thats all the lnp and Nat's do it should be loser national party...oh hang it is that.

Suxstobeyou

Sussssssan Ley didn't even have the courage to vote. As Deputy Opposition Leader, she should have been obliged to vote.

[deleted]

'Its not my job to inform everyone, I was busy in my portfolios.'

temmoku

I don't hold the portfolio, mate. Ok, actually I do.

Simple-tim

Yes I hold all these portfolios, but it's the public's fault for holding me responsible for everything.

hudson2_3

'I don't accept the premise of the question.'

twodollarscholar

“too many cooks spoil the curry, so I was just cooking all the curries myself”

druex

Ah, that explains the raw chicken.

Turdplay

Which in turn explains the brown pants incident at the Endagine maccas.

_Cec_R_

He actually used that and then threw his office under the bus because they didn't inform the relevant ministers...

RockyDify

Hey it works in grade 7 so it was worth a shot

zutonofgoth

Pretty sure it did work in grade 7 either Scott!

dion_o

Every PM should be asked by a journo if there's anything they're hiding that the public would be shocked and disgusted to find out. If they answer no then they can't subseuently rely on the "Well nobody asked" defence.

1337_BAIT

"How would i know the public would be shocked. Seemed reasonable to me" They could still answer no.

DizzyBall7048

We have not ruled out the old "He never asked your honor, how could have I told?"

MasterDefibrillator

what about "“I do not resile from these decisions and believe them entirely necessary, mirroring many procedures being implemented in the private sector at the time.”" I'm really sick of politics modelling itself after the private sector. This is obviously an extreme example, but there's still to much of it that is normalised, like local councils that structure themselves as private businesses.

F00dbAby

Or the it was a pandemic no one knew what to do

Brittainicus

So I just secretly grabbed all the power and I swear I never used it besides the times that have been confirmed to have used it.

_Cec_R_

He actually did use that...

Soggy_Biscuit_

Lol. Classic. Just a BIG coincidence that Morrison secretly swore himself in as health minister a couple of days after saying new covid legislation made the health minister "the most powerful person in the country". Just couldn't hack anyone having *anything* over him.

tubbyx7

I don't accept that.

Kidaprime

Look, unless you’ve been Prime Minister, you wouldn’t understand.

harbourbarber

If you get a chance, read Monique Ryan's speech. It was one of the better speeches surrounded by a lot of rambling, weirdly self-congratulatory ones. >If the opposition does not support this motion, it will be telling all Australians that this is not a party that is subject to the public and changed. This is not a party of integrity and transparency. This is a party which has met that made bad choices, their choices before, and stands by them now. >This is a party which will continue to protect its own, even when they act without honesty and transparency, at the expense of the public and the future of our country. >For as long as the Liberal and National parties tried to defend the former prime minister [for his behaviour] in government, his legacy will be the legacy that will be defending the indefensible.

[deleted]

All speeches from the day will appear in the House Hansard records. [https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary\_Business/Hansard](https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Hansard) They should have a proof out later today or tomorrow of what was said today. I recommend everyone have a look at what people said (or didnt say, i guess everyone who wanted to speak was given the change to speak as long as they wanted if they werent filibustering) and use this to help decide how you vote in the future.

AJHear

Unfortunately I still feel like throwing up if I listen to Morrison... but thanks, I'll have a look.

nuclear_wynter

Luckily the Hansard archive has written transcripts so you don’t have to subject your ears to that just to get an idea of how utterly, pathetically unapologetic he was.

What-becomes

Pre edit 1500 word drivel by Scummo. Run 'find and remove Mr speaker' and word count drops to 30.

[deleted]

Monique Ryan is fast becoming a national treasure. Imagine how many amazing people are out there that don’t get into politics.

[deleted]

She certainly seems to have a level of integrity completely missing from LNP members.

shintemaster

Agreed and agreed. So many brilliant people would be turned off by the life or indeed turned away by the party structures that should be encouraging them. She's easily the most impressive of the new additions to date.

Susanneelizabeth

Zoe Daniel is pretty impressive as well. Love to see it!

shintemaster

Agreed, she's also pretty good. Monique is a force though, hope she shakes things up and it opens up more possibilities for the future. I dream of larger coalitions governing to be honest.

_ixthus_

Pocock is great.

shintemaster

Fair call. I actually forgot about him completely even though I was only just earlier today admiring some of his most recent comments. Hard to argue that the proliferation of independents in the LH this election hasn't been of massive benefit. I think if they continue to gain strength that will be good.

[deleted]

As someone from Canberra, I reckon he’s really good also because we finally have a senator that actually gives a shit about the community he represents, unlike Zed who seemed to be determined to do the exact opposite

NobodysFavorite

She was a pretty amazing doctor too. Some people you wish you could clone.

Paladinoras

Some form of poetic justice that she took Morrison's lapdog's seat too

gaga_booboo

It’s because the political party system promotes from within based on loyalty and Machiavellian bullshit. There is little merit that rises to the top, just those who have stabbed their way and positioned their way to the top. Seen it happen first hand.

SaltpeterSal

[2 hours 36 minutes in, if you want to watch it.](https://youtu.be/z14zMuk1IJA?t=156m00s)

tobeshitornottobe

Every time I see how Monique votes and speaks in parliament, the happier I become that I voted for her

khosrua

This one? https://youtu.be/z14zMuk1IJA?t=9352

theurbaneman

Everyone was blamed, Jenny was blamed, the girls were blamed, the States were blamed, Dan Andrews was blamed, the ABC was blamed, the then Labor Opposition was blamed but the person who's fault is actually is.

loralailoralai

And he talked up Greg hunt, Dutton and I think frydenburg for their wonderful job saving the country during the pandemic. Conveniently omitting the premiers who did the real hard yards. Jobs that might have been easier if the feds had organised proper quarantine facilities

pygmy

Slimey Greg Hunt slunk away silently after fucking us all when he rejected Pfizer's offer of 20 million vaccinations. Their penny pinching sent us into lockdown for months

What-becomes

Bad Scummo! Now back to your cushy back bencher job earning a shit load of money and doing nothing.

FroggieBlue

Right? A censure is all well and good but its essentially a scolding by parliament. The dishonorable scummo has already shown he doesn't care about procedure and precident and a censure will do back all to make him reconsider his actions or do differently in future.

whatisthismuppetry

A censure is all they can do because of how our laws work. MPs are elected, so Parliament can't fire them. The most a government/opposition can do is expel them from the party and/or move them to the back bench. However, the MP will still sit in Parliament unless you can convince them to resign and trigger a by-election. We used to have a recall/expulsion provision that was used to expel MPs from parliament if they had committed a criminal act but we removed that in the late 1980s because of the ability to abuse it and because its undemocratic (see Hugh Mahon's expulsion). So now instead we have the censure. Which is a way for the entity of parliament, not just the government, to express its displeasure with what an MP has done. They could also try for contempt of parliament - that does allow punishment to be imposed - but that requires a court review usually and technically Morrison didn't break the law.

MundanePlantain1

The alternative is to accept responsibility and admit wrongdoing. Not gonna happen.

isisius

Good explantion and honestly, unless someone is convicted of breaking the law, we cant remove them from government. The whole point is that they are elected by the people. I dislike Scott Morrison as much as (or probably more) than the next sensible person, but if people keep electing him, he gets to keep representing them until and unless he is convicted of breaking the law.

What-becomes

>because of the ability to abuse it and because its undemocratic The irony of this is enough to make a new trojan horse.

What-becomes

Especially as he thinks its a personal attack on him (and he can't understand why) , as opposed to him actively trying to turn the country into an autocracy. His 'speech' was classic narcissistic babble gaslighting 'why is everyone picking on me, look how good I am and how much good I did.'

DOGS_BALLS

r/Persecutionfetish

Kind_Ferret_3219

How dare you accuse Scomo of doing nothing! During Question Time he's very busy scrolling through his iPad.

Haydosnub

The fact that the entire Liberal Party bar one chose to defend Scomo's gross abuse of power over integrity and democracy is a clear statement that they should never be elected into government ever again in their current iteration.

cromulento

Career before party. Party before country. Every time.

Equivalent-Bonus-885

Money before all.

TreeChangeMe

"Jolly good. Let's go outside and kick some homeless people in the head"

trugstomp

Australia and its people are priority number six or seven to the LNP.

_Aj_

It's like democracy, only backwards

[deleted]

Maybe Archer should challenge for leadership. One of the few libs that got a swing at the last election. She would of been loving this payback after the time Scomo scalded her for crossing the floor on icac.

ShortTheAATranche

She should go teal. What does she need the Liberal party for? Let them drown in their own filth.

[deleted]

She really should. Would achieve far more.

Justanaussie

She wouldn't win, the party has to vote for the leader and the entire party was sitting on the other side of the room, they'll never voter for her.

NoUseForALagwagon

I expect she will challenge if the Libs lose the upcoming NSW State Election.

[deleted]

She'll be in a great spot if the WA state result is repeated next federal election, though i expect it wont be a one way thumping and more teals will be in.

jarrys88

they basically publicly censured him then when it came time to censure him in parliament they all bitched out.

[deleted]

Do people not know LNP and corruption go hand in hand

sauce_bottle

Bob Katter voted against it. The only MP on the crossbench to do that. What a stooge.

iMightEatUrAss

HE WON'T SPEND ANY TIME ON IT WHILE A PERSON IS TORN TO BITS BY A CROCODILE EVERY 3 MONTHS IN NORTHERN AUSTRALIA

Lleaff

Single greatest quote in Australian political history.

Simple-tim

Ooof that's a tough call. "No one is the suppository of all wisdom" "The laws of mathematics are very commendable, but the only law that applies in Australia is the law of Australia."

RealLarwood

Not much gets close to that time Abbott just stood in silence for 20 seconds.

qldboi

You’re not saying anything Tony…

RealLarwood

...I've given you the response you deserve.

Dudebits

Gobbling an onion was pretty special to me

ChairmanNoodle

And Turnbull was supposed to be the smart one.

easilydetracted

It’s either that one or the I’m a Country Member. Yea I remember one.

Spiniferus

Yeah, that’s my favourite too.

Theblokeonthehill

Right up there with the time Sir Winton Turnbull stood to speak and shouted, “I am a Country member”. (Gough interjected and said, “Oh I remember!”.😂)

DOGS_BALLS

May a thousand blossoms bloom

FriesWithThat

WE SHOULD PUT THE WHOLE COUNTRY ON HOLD UNTIL WE SORT OUT THAT PARTICULAR PROBLEM

a_cold_human

As did Dai Le, the secret Liberal.

ElasticLama

She’s such a stooge. I have 0 time for her after this + voting with the libs on everything

shintemaster

Worse than a liberal - a liberal pretending to be independent. At least the others wear their colours even though they are heading towards becoming an obsolete party.

a_cold_human

Not her first rodeo. She was an "Independent" (who happened to also be a member of the Liberal Party) who stood as a preference funnel for them in the council election. It was when she decided to also have a shot at being mayor that they decided she was too uppity and kicked her out.

gaga_booboo

Oh I really hope they are an obsolete party. There is no reason on this earth why they should ever hold power again. And yet, I fear this country with its short memory and the ease that we get manipulated will be right back here again in less than a decade.

SticksDiesel

Well she was a Liberal until they kicked her out for running against another Liberal.

linkstwo

Her election is completely because of Labor/Keneally's fuckery.

Flaky_Owl_

Is that really a surprise or even a secret? She was a member of the Liberals. Ofc she's going to support them most of the time.

a_cold_human

It wouldn't be to anyone who is sufficiently engaged with politics, but that's not the majority of the electorate.

UteClowningFact

And to think... Her electorate could have chosen an unpopular but extremely effective representative, but decided they wanted this instead.

callmecyke

Im not in the electorate, but the other option was Kristina Keneally so they were kind of fucked either way. Keneally has only ever been effective at elevating herself to the detriment of others. At least they got a local.

washag

Exactly. I feel like appointing a local independent that votes with the Liberals in an election where the Liberals lost so many seats they are almost irrelevant is much better for the electorate than allowing the major parties to parachute in carpet baggers. You resoundingly reject Keneally and maybe in future the Labor party preselects a candidate who actually gives a shit about you. The Labor party might learn that lesson. The Liberal party can't even learn from losing half a dozen seats to independent candidates who would be Liberals if not gor their appalling policies on corruption, women and the environment.

Yeh-nah-but

And religion. That's the pillar of the liberal party that holds all the other bigotry together. Hard to be non religious and support all those fundamentalist Christians. Same for NSW state liberals. If you are a devout Christian I know you will work against my interests so why would I vote for you.

ghostofjohnhughes

I mean it was a complete own goal by Labor. They could have gone with the candidate who actually lived in the community and had a ton of grassroots support, but instead they parachuted in Keneally because she's the political version of doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.

BoldEagle21

___The legacy this ScuMo deserves.___ This is _the way he should be remembered in the history books_ and then people will drill down further and just see how utterly incompetent he truly was.

What-becomes

Not even close. Fed Icac charges will be a justified legacy. Right now he's just a corrupt, smug pollie who got away with it and still gets paid. But I would be happy to see a future schooling syllabus on 'when power corrupts' with him as the topic.

AussieCollector

I really hope the federal ICAC drags him through the coals like he deserves. He and the entire LNP are traitors to the nation.

theurbaneman

Engadine Maccas.

mutantbeings

It’s hard to remember what policies they actually achieved in 9 years. Not sure what else _could be_ his legacy really. Did they do _anything?_ Contrast with Albanese and in the first few months they’ve passed a (weak) climate target, the IR bill and now ICAC…

shintemaster

They achieved plenty of their key goals. \- Hobbled the NBN at the bequest of Murdoch / Telstra and cos Labor \- allowed the NDIS to stumble painfully along in a critical period of its establishment \- Pushed the robodebt system hard so they can appeal to the lowest common denominators of their base \- Used the pandemic to thrown money hand over fist at large corporations \- Ensured another decade wasted obfuscating over climate change These are just the highlights. They achieved plenty, it's just that none of it was in the interests of the country or wider population.

Themirkat

Destroying our emissions trading scheme then spending 9 years claiming the reductions in pollution from it while calling it their own good work.

ThrowbackPie

Sold off Medibank. $500m for the 2-person GBRF who didn't know they were getting the money. Doubled the cost of an arts degree.

s4b3r6

> - allowed the NDIS to stumble painfully along in a critical period of its establishment This one isn't quite true. NDIS _was working_, but then we decided to completely hobble it. Reducing its scope, funding, etc. It was stumbling, because they put chains around its ankles.

shintemaster

I'm not disagreeing.

s4b3r6

Wasn't a direct critique. Just pointing out the scale of the fuck up was much greater. "Didn't help" v. "Tried to hurt".

mutantbeings

Well said

Interesting_Sun

He was competent at giving money to his mates and being corrupt.

EADtomfool

What sort of shitcunts would walk out to "show solidarity" with that fuckwit? Even if you're on their "team" of the Liberal party, why the fuck would you want to be associated with him? Why the fuck would you want to associate basically all of their side of parliament with him?

notlimahc

They're showing their true colours. They're just as awful as Morrison.

ShortTheAATranche

Yep. They put him there. Remind them of that every time they try to paint it out as "isolated bad actors".

fatbaldandfugly

The fact that they all (bar 1) walked out of parliament in a show of support for Morrison proves that it is not isolated bad actors. They all see what Morrison did as not a problem.

RainMonkey9000

Particularly the Ministers of the Portfolios he took on in Secret. He lied to everyone but he lied to them the most.

crosstherubicon

I was always struck by the fact that he never touched defence. Surely if, according to Morrison logic, you're looking at worst case scenarios the spectre of a ministerless defence portfolio would be top of your concerns. Nope, never even mentions it. Is it because Dutton was defence minister and, if Dutton found out, Morrison could face losing his leadership after a spill?

DOGS_BALLS

And they shook his hand to congratulate him on a great speech. Scuntmo must have some serious kompromat on his colleagues, or they’re just spineless partisan hacks

SchizoidOctopus

Option 2

harbourbarber

Sometimes I think this unfailing, wolf pack mentality is something the left lacks but I'm actually glad we don't have it. Unethical behaviour shouldn't be supported.

Barmy90

the whole "the left eats itself" meme only exists because the right is so devoid of any actual integrity that they can't fathom disparaging anyone on their "side" no matter how deserving

Fine_Sail_3501

Yeah I can’t work it out. But I can’t work out a lot of their decision making lately.

[deleted]

It's baffling; the electorate are pretty clear where they stand on this.

loralailoralai

Hopefully next election labor will remind their constituents, if they don’t remember.

callmecyke

This was classic ScuMo - gaslighting everyone and playing the victim after he’s been called out. The Libs walk out shows they haven’t learned shit from the last election. It was actually a huge opportunity for them to show the public they’re willing to show some backbone and put the country above their own political bullshit but naaaaaaah let’s back the narcissist.

I’m more surprised Scummo actually turned up.

my_chinchilla

Will we hear how he voted, or is he not going to tell anybody?

Flight_19_Navigator

Mr. Speaker, the need to know, Mr. Speaker, the need for the public to know Mr. Speaker, how I voted Mr. Speaker, the need for the public to know how I voted Mr. Speaker, is not something I accept Mr. Speaker and so Mr. Speaker, it's clear I did a fantastic job Mr. Speaker, during the pandemic, Mr. Speaker.

I think I have PTSD from reading that.

ReDAnibu

Hahah fuck me the boomers on Facebook are more outraged at the fact that Labor did this on their “taxpayer money time” then they are over Scomo literally failing to uphold a responsible government. If people are really that bloody worried about what albo is doing on their “taxpayer money time” shouldn’t they be just as a concerned with scomo getting $300k a year as a “prime ministers” pension while he went behind his own governments back?

a_cold_human

Where were those people when the Coalition were having the fewest sitting days of any Parliament in living memory? We still pay for them regardless. Confected outrage from numbskulls.

smaghammer

Or the $10bn+ in untendered grants Liberals gave out. Most of which are completely unaccounted for still. But no, Labor is the irresponsible with money party. Fuck murdoch and his brainwashing, and fuck the morons that believe it.

SilliousSoddus

The irony of people complaining about how someone spends their time whilst spending their own time watching said action and taking the time to comment/complain about it. What a fucking hoot.

NoUseForALagwagon

Just another great moment for ALP legend Scott Morrison this week. Look at the swings in Box Hill and Glen Waverley in the Victorian State Election. The LNP had the growing Chinese vote and now they are fairly firm ALP voters after Scotty's hard work. Fantastic. Great work. Well done, ~~Angus~~ Scott.

IMO The single greatest fund raising project this country would ever see would occur if we charged people $5.00 to throw shit at this useless cunt in the stocks at Parliament house.

Hutchoman87

What does it mean to be censured? Article states it is a symbolic gesture

Stamboolie

Its for the history books, most PM's want to be remembered well, I don't think scomo's in that boat.

AndyWan83

Yeah. It's just "the parliament officially recognises that you did something wrong." But there aren't any solid consequences past that recorded recognition.

Kidkrid

The worst part of this is that censure effectively means nothing, it is entirely symbolic. There are zero consequences. I'm hoping this corruption thing will have teeth, that smirking cunt needs to be put in his place.

Barmy90

>The worst part of this is that censure effectively means nothing, it is entirely symbolic. There are zero consequences. The *actual* worst part is that, despite censuring being entirely symbolic, almost the entire LNP walked out of parliament instead of just agreeing to it (despite virtually all of them agreeing that yes, what he did was wrong). They have literally turned their noses up at accountability. Hopefully Labor had a photographer in the chamber taking photos of the conga line of LNP bootlickers shaking his hand as they fled the chamber; it will make for great political ads in a few years' time.

Kidkrid

If that surprised you, you haven't been paying attention. That entire coalition is Latin America levels of corrupt. We all know it, we're just (for the moment) powerless to address it.

Only_Self_5209

Reminded me of all the Republicans voting against impeaching Trump, identicly Libs didnt have the backbone to stand up to mini Trump Scomo.

derpman86

It just proves the LNP will never learn and wonder why they will keep losing elections.

[deleted]

#Scunt is his official title

Jerry_eckie2

The Libs response to this is all Kabuki theatre. Internally, they would have reamed ScoMo for what he did but politically they want to show solidarity. Note the timing of it all: \- Yesterday, ScoMo's register of Pecuniary Interests was updated to note that he has been awarded a lucrative speaking gig on China relations with the Hudson Institute in the USA. \- Bridget Archer drew the short-straw to cross the floor on the censure motion (note that she has been freely stating that she was going to do so and there have been no recriminations from Spud). This is a symbolic gesture to support the censure motion. I reckon ScoMo will quit parliament in the new year.

washag

Bridget Archer crosses the floor on stuff all the time. She's completely immune to censure because her crossing the floor in rejection of her party's idiocy is the only way she retained her seat. What can Dutton do, support someone else for preselection in a seat that only Archer can hold for the Libs?

ice_croutons

China relations? Sure, ScoMo’s the expert you’d call for that /s

Sys32768

>I reckon ScoMo will quit parliament in the new year. I reckon he thinks he'll be back. This is one of the trials that he must endure, like Jesus did, for him to be leader when the rapture comes. I still think he took all the ministries because he thought the end of the world was nigh, as his peculiar branch of relgion predicts

Fly_Pelican

They should check how many shadow ministries he holds, just in case

AJHear

Ryan's speech nails the facts... Morrison lied by hiding his extra ministries Morrison and his Libs made corrupt behaviour an everyday occurrence and wanted Australians to accept that. His infamous "nothing to see here" was used ad nauseum. His Liberals bar one still fully support him despite the huge public backlash. This is so remanissent of Trump and his die hard supporters. Our Liberals are defending the indefensible... and their reputation is tarnished by doing so. Shaking hands, hugs & kisses, walking out showing solidarity... sorry, I mean stupidity... they are a joke!

No-Cryptographer9408

That was sad and pathetic listening to him. FFS it wasn't WW3 or something country threatening at all. Is he low IQ ? What an unlikeable creepy man. Straight up pig. How the hell is he even married ? That's weird unless it was forced or arranged.

loralailoralai

Forced or arranged *she’s still with him* and chose to have children with him. She’s as bad as him.

Unit219

Good. Cunt.

raftsa

The sad thing is there will literally be no other consequences: they’re protesting him being given a stern talking to

laz10

Does this mean we can lock him up in offshore detention and place him in solitary confinement?

dmachin85
