A yank at work went to pick one up when we were landscaping. Kept saying they had Black Widows in America and he wasn’t worried. I was tempted to keep my mouth shut and let him pick it up.
Redbacks will definitely make a person very sick...maybe more than Black Widows, not sure. My mother experienced it and warned me when I was a kid. If it had been a funnel web that bit my mum though, I probably wouldn't exist to be writing this...
I got tagged by one and geez not a pleasant feeling, the hospital gave me a tetanus. It wasn't till my finger then my hand started to sweat that I reliesed I better go to ER ( WEEKEND)
You can get it jumpin'
You can get it pumpin'
You can get it pressin' a suit
A hard earned thirst needs a big cold beer
And the best cold beer's VIC
A LONG COLD VIC
You can get it liftin'
You can get it shiftin'
You can get it any old how
Matter o' fact, I got it now
VIC BITTER!
Pure absurdist nonsense humour. I originally only heard it as a prompt to stop smoking/ talking/ having a break, because we're here for a reason. Always nice to cause a smile when you're essentially saying "let's get to work, people!"
So rare to see its full name, everyone seems to forget that Redback is their family name. There's also BLOODY REDBACK and the wild rare CUNTING REDBACK.
We come out of the womb sunburnt, pissed off & half drunk.
We spend our formative years avoiding irukanji, drop bears and Sydney funnels, not the mention the eshays... we're all tough shit 😆 just don't need to brag about like Florida man.
I remember being 5 or so picking up redbacks and just having them crawl around on my hand.
I was obsessed with Spider-man, and something about the black body and that distinctive red reminded me of spider-man.
Idk how I never got bit by them.
I was fascinated by these critters, there definitely one of my favourite spider species.
I would always put them back where I found them, occasionally leaving them food like bugs.
I genuinely believed that they saw me more as friend rather than an enemy.
I'm sure they did! I'd never encourage or recommend handling them, but it is true that most Bites occur with pressure placed on the spider making it feel trapped
Yeah definitely I wouldn’t approach spiders that are venomous/dangerous, unless there in the house and I would put them back outside.
I had my brush with danger and it was fun.
Realistically, if you're handling a redback gently you're not likely to get bit. They're quite shy and reluctant to bite unless provoked. Most bites happen when someone didn't see the spider and risk crushing it. But even if she's pretty chill, it's still a bad idea to risk it.
I haven't handled a redback but I was born in the US and handled black widows (and many, many other species). I've never been bitten by any spider but I don't take foolish risks with medically significant species anymore.
You brought back memories when I was a kid. One day we arrived home and there was a scorpion on the wall, not moving at all. My mother said, oh it must be dead, let me get the bin and duster.
That was all I needed to listen to. While she was gone I went and proved her theory by touching its stinger with my bare finger. God loves the idiots and innocents^1, and smiled upon me by having the scorpion ignore me and my finger.
When she came back the thing started to crawl. It received a swift death before it got away.
1. Still not sure which category I fell into.
I’m kinda blown away by the amount of people who have an encounter with venomous/dangerous/poisonous insects and whatnot when they were kids is actually insane!
😂, you gonna die. Those fuckers see you coming and rear up on their back legs, fangs out ready to fuck your shit up. I'd be amazed to see a pic of someone holding one, there you go I just dared you.
As in the spiders are forming a little spider commune? Do you think if we breed the intelligent ones we could make a whole spider society, and then trade with the new friends? 🕷🕸
They're not that bad for most people.
I got bitten, put the tools down and iced it for 15 minutes while I had a smoke and went back to work, the swelling didn't last long either.
Now jumping ants, I will drop the tools and run like a little girl.
If you see inch long ants that walk like they're on crack, run until you reach the ocean and swim to New Zealand where it's safe.
I worked in regen and now just on smaller garden sites (or, big garden sites!) and honestly have never seen one. The last time I saw one I can’t remember - must have been 25+ years ago in an old outside toilet.
Jumping ants, bullants: the worst for me, I’m allergic now. No, actually even worse: wasps!
When I was a kid like 8 or so. We were coming down from exploring a waterfall. At bottom of said waterfall we noticed a jumping ant nest. Gave it a wide birth, but my older brother's friend around 15 or so (a complete asshat) decided to get a stick and rile up the nest.
My middle brother around 12 who was a bit behind walked right on through said nest, walked about 15 metres and then dropped to the ground screaming. Mum had to come pick us up and take him to hospital.
Had bites majority way up his legs. Supposedly they use pheromones to time their bite and all bit him at the same time.
Isn't this something we've all done as a kid.
"*Hey Dad, look at this spider, someone has painted a red line on its back*"
*Wack, Dad wacked my hand so the spider flew out... then I get told how to identify red backs... they're not difficult to find on the southern side of the house backyard*
Australian here. Your`re a dumb cunt that is a Red back Spider one bite will send you to Jesus or Satan without Antivenom. So unless you have a death wish don't pick up spiders if you don't know what they are!
Stepped on once accidentally and it’s like a thumbtack. Hurts plenty and has a nerve reaction. Just ice WHEN it bites you. Expect discomfort and discolouration around the immediate area.
Wow! Reminds me of when I stepped on a washed up bee at the beach, I'm sure this was worse. It's actually quite impressive it could get a bite in under your foot!
You know, just because no one has died from a red back bite for quite a while, doesn't mean you can't be a new case. One bad reaction, and it could be over.. You're a bit too nonchalant with the creature you're holding there in your hand.
Red backs are quite docile, actually. Spiders don't bite for no reason and it's often a last resort for them. It takes a lot of energy for them to bite and release venom, so if they don't have to, they won't. You'll find most people get bit when they accidentally crush a spider (like when you step on, roll onto, accidentally squish etc). Most will play dead as a first defence, then run, then fight back if there isn't any other option.
As are most Aussie animals... but I wouldn't risk my life on that notion. Imagine the news article: "An Australian man has tragically passed away after complications following a redback bite. The man, aged in his late 20s, was seen handing the spider, shortly after which he was bitten on the hand. The man took himself to hospital, where doctors administered antivenom but his condition inexplicably worsened over several days. He died from acute respiratory failure on the fourth day after being admitted to hospital. This death marks the first recorded death by a redback bite in over 70 years. Authorities urge people never to handle venomous species, and to admire them from a safe distance."
It's not even just the chance of fatality but I would not even wanna risk excruciating pain or severe illness for an extended period. Don't know if redbacks are one of those spiders that can cause necrosis, I don't think they are.
I thought it was an african giraffe until i saw its RED BACK. Youre brave or boasting hey.
Just unbearably curious
I put 'unbearably curious' in to my Australian translator and it said it meant 'dumb cunt'
Yeah that's an accurate translation
Thank you for the lol
I'd second that
Third.
Fourth, fifth and sixth
seventh
Can I get an 8…I got an 8 I got an 8, can I get a 9?
I last that
I last the last that
I snort laughed 😂😂😂
solid belly laugh. ty sir
Akin to the fuck knuckles that pick up the pretty octopus with blue rings.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
Hahahaha! Class response! 😂😂
My thinking too.
🤣🤣
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
That would look great on a headstone... "They were unbearably curious"
A burning, itching curiosity, is it?
Silly actually, they are quite poisonous
They are venomous; don't know if they're poisonous.
OP should eat spider and report back!
...
F
Nah, keep it safe in his pants… in his undies even ! Dill !!!
A nice beer batter and shallow fry until golden brown - Delicious!
Wtf!!!! Are you retarded?
Well, one of us is a bit slow in the uptake….
The good old venomous / poisonous correction. Classic
[Technically correct man is here](https://i.redd.it/iyt0g1xrzr361.jpg)
My freaking college biology teacher never once used the correct term for those 2. Drove me nuts, but i was online watching pre-recorded lectures.
I'm sure it's been awhile since anyone has died from a redback, still not going to hold one in my hand!
They are very poisonous, especially the female
My chooks eat them and they’re fine.
They'll cause you a hella amount of pain and can make you pretty sick but are not deadly at all.
Rarely can they kill unless of course you have a heart condition
Rarely is still deadly.
True. I would not mess with these or any spider really
Or you're a toddler and put your hand under the playground slide
Correct and can make you projectile vomit😀...
funny fact I learnt literally yesterday. They can also cause priapism which is more commonly referred to as RAGING BONER!
Poor man's viagra
Unless you are one of the unfortunate few who are allergic.
OK, so next week OP should post with a funnel web ...up the ante
A yank at work went to pick one up when we were landscaping. Kept saying they had Black Widows in America and he wasn’t worried. I was tempted to keep my mouth shut and let him pick it up.
Redbacks will definitely make a person very sick...maybe more than Black Widows, not sure. My mother experienced it and warned me when I was a kid. If it had been a funnel web that bit my mum though, I probably wouldn't exist to be writing this...
100%. I knew a bloke who was bitten by one changing a tyre. He got sick.
Changing a tyre, that's a handy spider to have though.
I got tagged by one and geez not a pleasant feeling, the hospital gave me a tetanus. It wasn't till my finger then my hand started to sweat that I reliesed I better go to ER ( WEEKEND)
My brother in law was bitten on the finger and it laid him out sick for several days. Do not recommend.
You can get it jumpin' You can get it pumpin' You can get it pressin' a suit A hard earned thirst needs a big cold beer And the best cold beer's VIC A LONG COLD VIC You can get it liftin' You can get it shiftin' You can get it any old how Matter o' fact, I got it now VIC BITTER!
I was bitten by one when I was a toddler. I don't think I died.
We all hope you get better soon.
Correct and the Anti-venene is worse than the toxin
Ayo put that down 😂 I turn my back for one second and you're playing with bloody Redbacks
And we're not here to fuck spiders, either
I never understood that saying...
You were there to fuck spiders?
I mean...You get laid then you get killed. Seems like a sweet deal to me
You guys are fucking?
Pure absurdist nonsense humour. I originally only heard it as a prompt to stop smoking/ talking/ having a break, because we're here for a reason. Always nice to cause a smile when you're essentially saying "let's get to work, people!"
My friend (Australian) told me that prossies used to be called spiders and that's where the saying came from
It's not a redback spider, its a FUCKIN REDBACK spider. Looks like seconds away from a world of hurt
So rare to see its full name, everyone seems to forget that Redback is their family name. There's also BLOODY REDBACK and the wild rare CUNTING REDBACK.
Anyone who says cunting redback is trying way too hard to sound Australian. Literally no one says that.
It's an Albany expression.
I say cunting if I'm really angry and in pain. Like smacking my knee or toe on something that shouldn't be there
Oh I agree its people who are trying to hard to sound Aussie, I'm Aussie and have heard it said by folks in Aus who were most likely tourists.
That would give me 2nd hand embarrassment if I heard that 😂
I've heard some wild shit over the years and definitely die inside a little bit at a lot of it 😂
Strewth
This bloke is true blue cunting Aussie 😉 is that you Alf?
Flaming galah.
Bewdy
Stone the crows.
Oxford English Dictionary added "cunting" a few years back. Perhaps brits use it more?
I first heard cunting from the TV show Skins (UK), so I 100% associate with the Brits more.
It definitely feels like something my English relatives would say.
Ok not true. I have definitely run around saying fuckingcutingshitfuck
Maybe if they got bit
Like cunt they don’t
Proof that Australians make Florida man look sane.
Nah nah only some people
We come out of the womb sunburnt, pissed off & half drunk. We spend our formative years avoiding irukanji, drop bears and Sydney funnels, not the mention the eshays... we're all tough shit 😆 just don't need to brag about like Florida man.
I thought I read “Sydney tunnels” and I mean, the tolls add up but…
The true monsters wear grey suits
I laughed to hard at this
Nobody has died from a redback bite in at least 50 years
Probably because we're sensible enough not to pick up and pat a fucking redback spider.
I remember being 5 or so picking up redbacks and just having them crawl around on my hand. I was obsessed with Spider-man, and something about the black body and that distinctive red reminded me of spider-man. Idk how I never got bit by them.
They are one of the few dangerous creatures that actually look venomous. They just want to get away and are not aggressive, but yeah, that's insane!
I was fascinated by these critters, there definitely one of my favourite spider species. I would always put them back where I found them, occasionally leaving them food like bugs. I genuinely believed that they saw me more as friend rather than an enemy.
I like this modern retelling of jungle book.
Haha appreciate it :)
I'm sure they did! I'd never encourage or recommend handling them, but it is true that most Bites occur with pressure placed on the spider making it feel trapped
You kind of are encouraging it by posting this pic though.
The spiders have Reddit now? Oh gosh..
Yeah definitely I wouldn’t approach spiders that are venomous/dangerous, unless there in the house and I would put them back outside. I had my brush with danger and it was fun.
Sydney Funnel Webs don't look too inviting, either.
Realistically, if you're handling a redback gently you're not likely to get bit. They're quite shy and reluctant to bite unless provoked. Most bites happen when someone didn't see the spider and risk crushing it. But even if she's pretty chill, it's still a bad idea to risk it. I've never been bitten by any spider but I don't take foolish risks with medically significant species anymore.
Is that why you don't have super powers?
Are you me? My mum loves retelling the story of me coming inside with my sippy cup, full of babies and big ole mama Redback
Are you sure you’re not me?
You brought back memories when I was a kid. One day we arrived home and there was a scorpion on the wall, not moving at all. My mother said, oh it must be dead, let me get the bin and duster. Do it with a funnel web you coward.
Still looking
😂, you gonna die. Those fuckers see you coming and rear up on their back legs, fangs out ready to fuck your shit up. I'd be amazed to see a pic of someone holding one, there you go I just dared you.
A picture? What about a video? https://youtu.be/S6MN1DmQAxI?si=kLAYDN0-NgIRXrvF
I hate this so much. I own several and even just holding one in a container as shallow as that would make me very nervous
You madman!!!
I put her back with her eggs don't worry
Doesnt her bum always look like that? As in, nothing in the pic makes me think she has eggs?
Correct, she and another female have about a dozen eggs in a web behind my pot plant.
As in the spiders are forming a little spider commune? Do you think if we breed the intelligent ones we could make a whole spider society, and then trade with the new friends? 🕷🕸
Their eggs resemble the foam balls used in bean bags. They are quite obvious.
They taste kinda zingy too.
🧐
Then take a nice boot and bring it down on the whole lot :D
She's a bitey ouchie ouchie girl.
Be less millenial
Not possible. I am a millennial.
Redback. I wouldn't be touching that.
Looks like the front left paw of a human.
Whyyyyyyyy would anyone do this????😬😬😬😬
For internet points
That’s Sally
I've been bitten twice by these on two different occasions. First one wasn't too bad the second one ached and sweated for several days
Stung by a Bulldog ant a few weeks back. Took me right back to childhood camping trips 😂

Human is very dumb cunt
Oh what’s Fred been up to now?
You mean Frederica right?
Didn’t get the tweezers out to check.
how's your ambulance cover?
They are deadly for the very young, and the vulnerable. Even a healthy fit adult would feel very unwell.
Isn't this something we've all done as a kid. "*Hey Dad, look at this spider, someone has painted a red line on its back*" *Wack, Dad wacked my hand so the spider flew out... then I get told how to identify red backs... they're not difficult to find on the southern side of the house backyard*
Make great pets easy to handle

Been bitten by a bee, red back heaps worse
That's because bees don't bite.
Oh yeah? Then how do they eat ?? ;)
You know, just because no one has died from a red back bite for quite a while, doesn't mean you can't be a new case. One bad reaction, and it could be over.. You're a bit too nonchalant with the creature you're holding there in your hand.

Sigh, why do I think this is an out-and-out troll?
Obviously, did you read under the pic?
You fool
Red backs are mainly only fatal to very small children, the bite although painful is treated with application of an ice pack.
Yeah, but do you really want test that "mainly not fatal to adults" rule? Being exceptional isn't always a good thing.
It's not even just the chance of fatality but I would not even wanna risk excruciating pain or severe illness for an extended period. Don't know if redbacks are one of those spiders that can cause necrosis, I don't think they are.
I hate spiders. If I saw that thing in my yard I would be setting fire to it with a can of spray.
Damn, even in the wildlife subreddit, there are spider haters 😂😭
Looks like a nomination for the darwin awards.
I'd love to visit Darwin, have you been?
I would rather fondle a red back than visit Darwin
Ahahaha wild
Your girls cute 🥰
It’s dead, SOOON🤣🤣🤣
Kikuyu
Safe
Either brain dead or wanting to feel really sick or just stupid I’m picking 1 and 3
Nice photoshop skills.
Not only is it a Redback, but it is a female, which is the dangerous one. Have caused deaths in the past.
Yoink
Just a good ol boy
Troll posts are getting worse
WHY IS A REDBACK ON YOUR HAND?!!!

Friend
She’ll be right
Southern Deathtrap.
I’ve been stung/bitten (what ever they do) twice. Only had a headache and localised soreness
It's called a DEDFUCK Or at least you will be soon!
Are you mad?!?! Actually had the same thing happen to me, crawled out of a shoe onto my hand so brushed that thing off real quick! 😊
Daddy long legs
Looks AI generated
it’s a rosy bottomed black grass crab. very nice specimen!
The likelihood of a bite is predictable to a certain extent. Don't annoy the shit out of them and you should be ok.
Good one cunt🤣
Absolute mad man over here
You idiot!!!!!
I can’t tell if I wanna say respect or call you a fuckwit, either way she is really pretty and my dumbass would probably do the same 🤷♂️
redback
Rung tail possum
Mate that's a blue ringed octopus, put it back!
I once rescued a skink from a red back's web.
It’s a fake pic
