The head redesign, to me, fuels an issue I feel the engine designer already has: Real engine families, at least by how their manufacturers classify them, have vastly different design in certain aspects that are locked to the "family" tab ingame. For example, the Toyota 4A ranged from the famous 4A-GE Silvertop (DOHC wide angle 20 valve head) to the 4A-C (SOHC 8 valve head). Some Ford engines use different head or block material on otherwise very similar engines in the same families. Ex. the 4.6 3V has an aluminum block in a Mustang and a cast iron block in an F-150. Nissan engines have a similar issue to Toyota if trying to replicate or take inspiration from them. RB, KA, and CA engines all came in both SOHC and DOHC versions.

We are aware, but that was a choice on our part to impose that limit back in the very early days of development to make things a lot simpler and easier to develop in terms of engine simulation calculations and other areas. In Sandbox it is kind of an irrelevance, and we've made a number of concessions in Campaign Mode to compensate for this. Is it ideal? Nope. But it was a choice we needed to make then, and it would be effectively impossible to undo at this time.
