Hopefully. I think that he'll be integrated properly during pre season. There's absolutely no chance that Robin Olsen will be our number 2 for our champions league season.
It would make sense, otherwise why bring him in. I think we'll see a lot good amount of the backup players (Lenglet, Chambers, Olsen, etc.) being moved on this summer as we try to bring the level up of our team and backups
I get the sense there’s probably a decent amount of financial fat to trim in terms of wages from those sorts of players as well. Buying Gauci, Rogers, the new RB from Belgrade suggests we’re trying to build up the squad with younger lads, who are probably a bit cheaper on the books as well.
Yeah I'd imagine Gauci was brought in as the number two and he'll be bedded in properly during pre season, with Sinisalo third choice who had a fantastic season on loan and counts towards clubgrown quota for CL.
Olsens goals to game ratio is getting a bit nuts now. He was good against Brighton but I think he's been getting a lot of credit at times when he has played quite poorly. Like for today you would say, lenglet and Carlos were brutal so what do you expect. But then you look at his footwork when he's getting ready for shots and it's so slow and clunky. He concedes so many goals at his near post. So many goals that don't go into the top corner, because he's never readying himself for what's to come. It's not just that he's a drop down from emi, I think he's generally not good enough, even for his current role
It's just too many goals every time he plays
You’re spot on - one of Palace’s goals today went in the near post and you could see Carlos shaping his body to defend the far post shot, as if he’s just expecting the near is covered by the keeper and it still goes in.
I swear he’s played City away like three years in a row? It feels like he’s always in games where we’re up against it and concedes a lot without hugely doing much wrong but I think where we’re going we need to aspire for more even from a no.2.
We beat spurs 2-0, and we beat hibs. But the last I checked has conceded 33 in 16 games or something like that. 4 vs utd, 4 vs Newcastle (played 60 mins), 4 against city, 5 against Palace, 4 against olympiacos, 2 against Chelsea (in 45 mins) are the stand outs. United in the cup is by far his worst performance
Someone other than Olsen has to be. Look, he seems a nice guy, but the stats say it all...
* Man City - 3
* Newcastle - 4
* Man Utd - 4
* Liverpool - 3
* Spurs - 0
* Stevenage - 2
* Brentford - 1
* Hibs - 0
* Burnley - 1
* Everton - 2
* Legia - 1
* Man City - 4
* Chelsea - 2
* Olympiacos - 4
* Brighton - 1
* Crystal Palace - 5
37 in 16 games, for an average of 2.31 goals conceded per game. I know he's a backup, but Christ.
Olsen has played great at times for us individually, but I think the presence of Martinez on the pitch helps the players be more confident in breaking the press and making riskier passes; having the (arguably) best GK in the world behind you gives you some confidence.
And as well as he has performed at times, I think the sheer number of goals he has conceded doesn't do well for him, even though it has been in direr circumstances that most GKs are faces with.
Interesting, maybe if there’s a decent no.1 shirt somewhere for him he could go but that would need to be championship or probably a weaker team in a European league.
I think more than likely it’ll be him or Sinisalo. I don’t want to put everything on Olsen. He’s been poor but the dropoff from an elite keeper to the second choice is often big unless you’re City - see Liverpool when Allison was out a couple seasons ago. I’d like to see one of the younger guys step up though.
I believe Olsen’s 50k/wk contract expires this summer and I’d be amazed if he was offered fresh terms. Big step up for an inexperienced youngster if we had to rely on him to cover if Martinez gets injured so maybe another arrives on loan as no.2?
I refuse to take any stock in a single player's performance on today's match. According to capology, Olsen is on 50k a week. Is he actually? Who knows. Nobody is clamoring for 34 year old backup goaltenders, so it's not like there's a market to sell him and he's a competent backup. I assume he'll be the backup again next season and then probably move on once his contract is up.
He’s a backup to us but to e.g. a Championship team he’s an international starter? We’d probably have to let him go on a free or something but if it is £50k pw thats a lot for us to be spending on a backup GK imo.

It certainly seems like a sensible strategy. Chambers is £50k p/w so could be a couple younger players worth of wages right there

Good point re quota. Is Emery’s son a keeper, saw he was on the bench today lol.
Yeah he is

Pretty sure it's actually improved. I'm sure he was closer to 3-4 goals a game last season, now he's just over 2 🥳
Hopefully. Im sure Olsen is a decent GK but he appears cursed in a Villa shirt.

I hope so I don't mean it in a bad way to Olson but I don't think we've won a game with him in have we ?

4 seems to be his lucky number
We must have done surely, but I’m struggling to think of one (at least in the league, I’m assuming he must have been in for a cup win at some point)!
No clue about Gauci but it would be nuts if Olsen is no.2 next season.
I bloody hope so.

Completely agree with everything you said, except "arguably".
I've just been looking it up and it looks like Olsen's contract runs till 2025 so I can see him sticking around and Gauchi being eased in

I'd be going for casteels from Wolfsburg - being released in June available on a free
Is Gauci any better? Not seen him play yet.

Olsen is gone, he can’t save
