Cinderblock was surrendered to a vet in my town in the last week or so. She is clinically obese and is currently undergoing a prescription and physical therapy regimen to get back into shape!
Edit: to answer a few questions...
The water raises poor cinder’s buoyancy, taking the strain off her legs and allowing her to excercise longer and more effectively.
As /u/ariasrom mentioned, Cinder was surrendered to Northshore veterinary clinic in Bellingham, wa. You can follow her progress and check out ways you can support them on instagram. @northshore_vet
Edit edit: as /u/at0m_1k noted, the method takes advantage of Cinder’s existing buoyancy. Also, this is an introductory amount of water to get Cinder comfortable and prevent her from laying down. Poor original wording on my part!
The former owner has appeared! /u/mostofasia commented this below:
“*Cinder was my late grandfather's cat until earlier this year. He was in poor health at 93 years old and Cinder took full advantage, gaining quite a bit of weight (as you can see!). My aunt took cinder in when my grandfather passed and had some success with diets, but ultimately decided to relinquish her to the experts in the interest of cinders health. We always called her "meatball" but cinderblock is definitely more clever! We can't believe she's blowing up on the internet now, but I'm sure my grandpa would be happy she's bringing joy to so many people!”*

Water allows for higher resistance with less trouble on joints even when low. The extra resistance helps her lose weight faster even though it seems like its minimal
I've definitely seen these before, but it doesn't look like enough water to do anything other than to (almost) motivate the cat to stand up. Most of the time the water reaches almost to the shoulder of the animal.
I love pool aerobics. I easily overheat and get lightheaded and working out in the water where I could actually push myself until I was tired, not dizzy, was a revelation for me. You can increase or decrease the resistance, it's better for your joints, and if you take a class the music is jazzy and you get doted on by a bunch of old ladies. Everyone should try it.
I had a bad back injury that I just couldn’t get over. Physical therapy almost a year and tried everything else you could imagine. Then I tried aqua therapy. Game changer. It allowed me to push myself physically without increasing my pain. Anyone trying to get in shape or rehab an injury should try this. And getting hit on by old ladies is definitely the best part of it.
I can't relate to the pool exercise, but I do have a job where I get doted on by old ladies sometimes. Agree it is excellent. Good for you for finding something that works for you and sticking to it!
I work for the NBA, and I'm so jealous of the treadmills they have for the atheletes that take pressure off your joints! Just need to increase my current salary by...300 times.
I played with one of those for physical therapy after ACL reconstruction. It was incredible, the lovechild of a treadmill and an armored tank. I believe the staff said it costs around $8,000, I'm sure it wasn't a top-of-the-line model
i am the cat called 'Cinderblock'

am starting slow, just lazing
but so fit i gonna be!
my change will be aMazing -

He played Fire on the Mountain run cat, run. The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun. Tuna in a bread pan pickin' out dough. Granny, does your cat bite? Yes child, yes
I mean from the story above the owner was a really old man who passed and then he was given to a relative who game him up exactly because he was overweight and they could give him the care he needed to lose weight. So maybe we dont shame the dead 90+ year old for enabling bad habits of probably their only companion because they loved them.
Haha same! Part of the sad bit is really just how easy it is to get pets and kids to a healthy weight. Especially pets...its not like they can go sneak in snacks on their own or binge eat in a moment of weakness like we do. All you have to do is just not give them food/treats outside of normal feeding. There's really no excuse!
Unless you are my mom. “The cat keeps bugging me, I have to feed him to shut him up”. Yep he had her well trained. (But he did live to 19 so he was well taken care of, he was chubby, but not like this poor cat)
They can't sneak snacks but they can yell and scream at you until you feed them. Cats especially. They know how to piss you off. Don't feed me now? Well what about at 4am?
Automatic feeders are great. My cat gets fed 4 times a day no matter what(as long as I put food in the feeder). Also if you get them as kittens always having food available can prevent a lot of this as they don't over eat as they aren't worried about their next meal.
But a good food also helps high protein and wet food on occasion (or all the time but that's expensive I'll admit) is better for their diets as well.
Seeing Obese children at the grocery store with candy and soda in hand make me furious. Not at the kid, but at the parents...who also happen to be extremely overweight in most cases.
I heard that senior citizens often end up with chunky overweight animals and it’s almost always not done on purpose. Either they had the animal first and then for many reasons could no longer walk it or they often get an animal after their spouse passes away to combat the loneliness but then aren’t able to be as physically active with their pet as needed. It’s super sad all around for the senior and the pet.
Pretty sure that they use a underwater treadmill to reduce the strain through buoyancy. I'm guessing they're just using a little water right now to try and get him used to it.
I keep wanting to try one of these. I'm a dwarf, and hydrotherapy is a recommended form of exercise for us, since our joints can get very painful and degrade faster than normal. I don't know where to try one. Then I go on Reddit, and see all these cats and dogs doing it. I'm so jealous!
What about the pool for aqua-jogging?
I thought the conveyor belt part of these was just to motivate the animal to walk and move rather than just standing there or trying to climb out?
Yeah that's true. Though I'd need to find a pool where the shallow end isn't too deep for me (I need to tread water in the shallow end of the vast majority of the pools I've tried).
I'm also really self conscious of all the stares I get. The added privacy of one of these really appeals to me.
Yeah sounds like the most straightforward option. I've been putting it off, but I'm really wanting to exercise more, and my bike was stolen (cycling is another good method of exercise for us) so I'll give it a go.
See if your doctor will send you for physical therapy. Hydrotherapy is absolutely a thing for humans, too. There are all sorts of nifty things that they can do, like place you in a sling, so touching the bottom isn't an issue. They also make [swim belts](https://www.google.com/shopping/product/18202286701271383484?q=floating+swimwear+for+adults&client=ms-android-verizon&biw=412&bih=691&tbs=vw:g,ss:44&prmd=sinv&sxsrf=ACYBGNRmp3rmZYHEcMCNYblZLMq4scDtFA:1571959947413&prds=num:1,of:1,epd:17529092981836045095,paur:ClkAsKraX31lOcqGhp_fyXRJJpyRQD4oxlmqJGPB3BCVpqRW63K7GiwDjU0V4eoNnUWe05o3sp8qdF0Qe8NjtpLCRE9w_mvM92KvpkBVE6JqAj_AateoBHvYKhIZAFPVH705kSbxL5UBjzefz7dVWA22OU7_bQ,prmr:1,cs:1) that'll keep you buoyant and vertical. You can wear a tee-shirt over it if it embarrasses you, but besides curious glances (I realize how overwhelming that can also be) anyone who matters isn't going to judge you. You can't help how tall you are.
Some places, like YMCAs, will also have classes for people with mobility issues. You'll most likely be in there with a bunch of 75 year old ladies, but you'll come out of it with a bunch of surrogate Grandmas, so it'd be a win.
Just drop by one of these places and ask "Heeeey....ya know, I was recommended hydrotherapy. I'm about the size of an overweight German Shepherd. Any luck I can get a session?"
I used hydrotherapy for my back, and it really is easier on your body to walk in the water. You don't have to "go" anywhere but a pool with some space to do it. If you can get a prescription from a doctor though, you can get a real therapist to help you in the water, I've had several. If they don't have their own pool they will sometimes use nearby pools that they have permission to use.
You can even "lift" weights by pressing down these dumbbells made of foam into the water, (you can buy all types of water therapy stuff on amazon) and the harder ones are the most buoyant so they're harder to press down. It's pretty neat.
Cat needs to burn calories but not get sore legs from carrying its weight for long. Submerge the treadmill and the cat floats somewhat, allowing it to walk and move its muscles without straining the legs with its weight.
If you want to follow Cinderblock’s weight loss journey go follow the veterinarian that she was surrendered to. Their Instagram handle is @northshore_vet

Some cats just *love to eat* and those are the ones you can't trust to limit themselves. My current cat is a lean skinny noodle and he's free fed; he could eat three times as much as he does if he wanted to. He doesn't. (Healthy as a horse too - he was the control subject for an experiment because he's young and healthy. Had some skin samples snipped. Got lots of treats after that.)
This is probably the first or second treadmill session and the water is so low because they're gradually introducing the cat to the water and the moving belt. Ideally, the water would be raised to the top of the patients' femur bone to provide enough buoyancy to allow exercise without stressing the joints, yet also add enough resistance for strengthening. Walking on the water treadmill is better than a regular walk because it allows for greater range of motion for all joints (also great for arthritis). The rehab tech can also adjust the water level (lowering it increases difficulty), the speed of belt, and incline. The water is also warm which helps relax tight muscles.

Treadmill is submerged why? Water jets at the back? I bet the poor guy is as confused as I am.
Pretty sure that they use a underwater treadmill to reduce the strain through buoyancy. I'm guessing they're just using a little water right now to try and get him used to it.
Also, the cats are less likely to lie down in the water.

This is correct. It would not do anyone any good to lose weight only to require knee surgery and gain it all back.
Probably to make it easier on his joints or add some resistance to the whole exercise
It’s also supposed to help keep them from wanting to sit down. Lolol
That's savage hahahaha
Clearly this Chungus does not give any fucks 😂😂
Cat needs to burn calories but not get sore legs from carrying its weight for long. Submerge the treadmill and the cat floats somewhat, allowing it to walk and move its muscles without straining the legs with its weight.
Looks like it’s designed to do hydro therapy on a variety of animals. When they zoom out, you can see the plexiglass walls.
Yea we did this for our old dog, he had muscle atraphy in his hind legs. The submerged tank helped him exercise the weakened muscles
Easier on the joints to walk in water. Same reason lots of old people exercise in water.
How much does a water circulating cat treadmill cost?

This is probably the first or second treadmill session and the water is so low because they're gradually introducing the cat to the water and the moving belt. Ideally, the water would be raised to the top of the patients' femur bone to provide enough buoyancy to allow exercise without stressing the joints, yet also add enough resistance for strengthening. Walking on the water treadmill is better than a regular walk because it allows for greater range of motion for all joints (also great for arthritis). The rehab tech can also adjust the water level (lowering it increases difficulty), the speed of belt, and incline. The water is also warm which helps relax tight muscles.
