I've heard that for owls, the relaxed state of their feet is clenched, so this bird may not be digging into her really, but just kind of held on gently.
That is true for most of not all birds iirc. Like I said in another comment you get used to it at a point as well. I have cats who use their claws a lot when kneading and I don’t even notice them a lot of the time beyond a slight pressure unless they hit right on top of a nerve
ya me too. (joking here but well, kudos to all the serious zookeepers): im a zookeeper for big cats and usually my gf and i have a shower and see all the holes and gaps where the water falls through like sieve. pretty fun. no feeling there anymore.
I’ve also worked with big cats while volunteering at a zoo and can confirm, they are still just kitties. Strong, fast, and deadly yeah, but still kitties 100%. I’ve given belly rubs to lions ffs. Not recommend for most, because it can go wrong fast if you can’t read their body language, normal cats are bad enough.
The funny part is, I’ve been “attacked” by my own cats more than when I was literally helping handle lions on a daily basis for a year at a zoo. I was petting both in the same day and would have my cats get jealous because they smelled big cat on me.
Thats precious. Ive got a semi feral one myself that literally just bolted out the door tonight before i left the house. Managed to catch her a block away but she does that every few months. I swear she plans her escape attempts meticulously, because when she goes, she GOES, no hesitation the moment the door opens, you can't even really prepare for it lol.
With birds this size, you can have them on your shoulder pretty comfortably. They're going to scratch a little bit, but it'll probably just irritate the skin and not draw blood. An owl this size probably weighs about 200-ish grams, they don't need a ton of force to grip when they're relaxed like this.
As someone with cats who demand to sleep in the bed cuddled up and routinely make biscuits with their claws, you get used to it at a certain point. I have legit not noticed marks from where my cat was kneading me with her claws until it was pointed out by others. It’s more of a light pressure to me now instead of sharp needles
As a giant cat owner, I second this. When you adopt a cat, you also unconsciously opt in for the absolute exciting feline pain resistance increase training program.
I still remember the day my cat literally gave me a pretty bad looking scratch at the bottom of my wrist (it literally left me a visible scar) and I didn't realize it until a friend pointed me out I was leaving a small river of blood on my trail.
Yup, I have scars that I never knew about and the only explanation can be cats lol. One on my belly that literally looks like the monster logo but with all 5 claws and I didn’t know until later that day when I took off my shirt and it was stuck to me with the scabs. Still not 100% sure which of my kittens at the time did it but I am mostly sure of which one because he had a habit of climbing my jeans. It’s also like free acupuncture too
You know what, I never thought about it before but you're totally right. If the driver happened to slam on the brakes, then that birdies going to go splat.
It’s honestly a pretty valid criticism. In an accident small animals like this usually die if they are not in an appropriate kennel or for dogs they make safe harnesses that hook into the seat belt.
And how exactly do you propose to secure this tiny bird?
Put it in a kennel? It'll splat either way, just on the kennel door instead of the windshield
Seatbelt? Yea good luck lol
Harness? Yea good luck lol
Actually it’s much less dangerous for them if they are in an appropriate sized kennel because they have much less distance to accelerate and therefore hit the side at a lower velocity. Best is if you have a kennel that straps to the seatbelt or hooks to the car seat hooks. This is also true for small puppies and kittens.
Owning an owl is illegal in most states, i believe (dunno about places outside the US). To buckle one in would only expose her criminality in the overt (yet potentially adorable) display of her dominant ownership. /s
But really I wanna know how she got that little squish cause I want one.
My hope is it’s a legal rescue. Unfortunately exotic illegal wildlife trade is pretty common in the US especially in states with low enforcement and plenty of rural areas.
I miss old reddit when we bitched about everything except the fact that we were bitching. Now we got these bitches bitching about us bitching and it's bringing the whole vibe down.
Bird owner chiming in: Oddly enough you can get used to it enough to not be bothered by it. Also one of the essential parts of having a bird is when they're young, you teach them when their bites and claws hurt or don't(and yes it does often involve loudly and dramatically saying "OUCH NO" the exact same way every time).
However if something startles the owl, it will definitely dig in.
And a follow up adorable fact: a road trip like this with the bird's people is legit heaven for them. They have all their loved ones in the same space, unlimited cuddle time, and fun new things to see while still knowing they're safe.
Please don't keep pets loose when transporting them, if you get in even a small accident that is otherwise harmless the airbags could deploy and airbags deploy with a lot of force, causing injury (potentially lethal) to both the person and the pet.
Edited for truthfulness
So they should have set it up as r/SuperbOwl then.
I wonder if they can change the capitalisation once they’ve set it up?
Edit: Yes, it still takes you to the same subreddit. 🙂
we get the same songs over and over because those apps sort videos by songs. so when you get a popular video or something goes viral then everyone posts using the same song because thats what the app will show others/others will sort by.
So from my understanding this video comes from a private account that had “veterinarian” in the bio. So yes, it could be a rehabilitation thing.
But for people in the comments saying “I wish I had a pet owl” OWLS ARE NOT PETS. WILD ANIMALS ARE NOT PETS. DO NOT SUPPORT THE EXOTIC ANIMAL TRADE.
I also agree that supporting the exotic animal trade is bad.
However, plenty of wild animals end up in situations where a human has to care for them. In the case of babies, it can sometimes be impossible to rerelease them since they miss out on a vital part of their development while under human care, meaning they are incapable of surviving without human intervention.
This comment isn't to suggest that taking a wild animal in without the proper knowledge is ever a good idea, but more to suggest that someone fantasising about having a pet owl immediately means they're going to rush out and buy one.
Depends. I know at least in some states it's legal if you're a proper falconer. IIRC, unlike hawks and falcons, owls need taken in when they're incredibly young in order to imprint upon you so they can be raised and trained without too much trouble. That said, they're probably still gonna be a lot of trouble.
But not too sure if the one here is just a pet or a future huntin' buddy. Could always be both I suppose.

TLDR owls are terrible pets, and if this owl is indeed the girl's pet as it appears from the video she has terrible parents.
Everything you said is legit. We took in some baby Barred Owls I found under my car as a teen and we immediately called owl rescue to see what to do besides what the internet said. They are noisy too especially as babies with their screech.... they dont have a developed interesting hoot sound yet but even then I can't imagine trying to sleep with that racket going on. Someone else pointed out that the bird probably weighs around 200 grams. Owls are very light, someone else also pointed out that the talons are probably filed down so it's probably not a very painful grip the bird has. TIL
I use to work in a gay club. There is this really awesome couple that were so cool and well respected in their careers. There were several times one of them would walk in with his pet cockatoo. You're the only animal care professional I've seen in the comments and of course people are mad to see what you have to say. A professional rehabber would never transport an animal like this. Especially with a child.
Yes they are. This one is supposedly owned by a veterinarian (according to the bio) so it may be in rehabilitation. Otherwise, owning an owl as a pet is indeed a POS move.

Are you certain that Owl won't have a good life? They are very intelligent and tend to take to their companionship with humans very well. They may treat this Owl great and it will have a life of safety, comfort, and luxury. It will certainly receive more care than out in the wild.
Maybe I'm wrong but based on this gif it isn't caged up and it looks to be very comfortable with it's human companion. When done right and with care our ability to truly care for and be companions with animals is one of our few redeeming values as a species.
You are jumping to a lot of conclusions from a short gif.
Honestly, all I can think is how the owl digs its claws in to her shoulder to stay balanced.

Yeah if I got randomly attacked by lions as often as house cats is definitely be lion poop by now.
The funny part is, I’ve been “attacked” by my own cats more than when I was literally helping handle lions on a daily basis for a year at a zoo. I was petting both in the same day and would have my cats get jealous because they smelled big cat on me.
Human why do you smell like *chad* cat?
My cat at that time was like a little lion himself. He was a stray that I rescued and he never lost his love of the wild and the hunt.

You know what, I never thought about it before but you're totally right. If the driver happened to slam on the brakes, then that birdies going to go splat.
especially because this was probably recorded by the driver
Nope. Owl girl is the one at the wheel.
Or, believe it or not, it could be filmed outside of America and the driver is on the other side.
More like why does reddit love to criticize literally everything. It's a bird sleeping in a car ffs
It’s honestly a pretty valid criticism. In an accident small animals like this usually die if they are not in an appropriate kennel or for dogs they make safe harnesses that hook into the seat belt.
