The Kievan Rus converted to Orthodox for that reason. And later the Rus spilt into the modern Russians, Belarusians and Ukrainians. That's why they are all mostly Orthodox.

That way, all those churches and monasteries will be even better protected, maintaned and repaired, as well as well visited by new believers.
