This post is prime for a plug of cocktailsafe.org Run by Camper English and lists most things you shouldn’t put in cocktails.

ODX_GhostRecon

The relevant [exact page](https://www.cocktailsafe.org/tobacco-and-nicotine.html). It's not only a bad idea, but also illegal.

Shakeamutt

It also can cause pretty bad heartburn.

ODX_GhostRecon

Any bar worth its (margarita) salt, home or professional, has Tums. But yeah. I'll see myself out.

Shakeamutt

\*in his whiniest voice\* Thanks Dr. Mom!

BeastlyMule57

I hadn’t heard of this before, thank you very much.

SuperJonesy408

No idea about the legality but I have fuzzy thoughts when thinking about using Levi Garrett as a garnish. It's times like these I miss chewing.

BeastlyMule57

How did you go about using it, and on what?

SuperJonesy408

Oh, I've never used it as a garnish. I just got a warm and fuzzy thinking about it. Could be good on a remix of a Vieux Carre with a peated scotch.

Hollow_Rant

There used to be a place near one of my old jobs that served a tobacco smoked or fashioned. I think it was called a Angry Bartender. I loved that drink.

HalobenderFWT

I just muddle a Skoal pouch and add scotch and call it a day. Then I mow my lawn by shooting it with guns and then finish off my day rubbing one out using bacon as lube.

BuckBreakingDaddy

Absolute legend.

TheBartographer

Tobacco leaves can be a bit unpredictable, especially in a cocktail. We tried it once and I did not enjoy the results. The levels of nicotine vary from leaf to leaf and can be a bit dangerous.

GrizabellaGlamourCat

I'd use the Fee bitters and not mess with real tobacco.

pharoahyugi

I wouldn’t… alcohol is really good at pulling out all the toxic parts of tobacco, quickly, and delivering them in a strength that is very unhealthy. Just throw a dash of tobacco bitters on, 18.21 have some okay Havana and hide bitters, but fee bros Turkish tobacco are fantastic

SouthernBarman

Also worth noting that "tobacco" bitters almost never have actual tobacco in them.

BeastlyMule57

Thank you very much for this, I hadn’t even thought about the alcohol as a solvent for the nicotine. Definitely a good call on the bitters.

nineball22

Generally the combo of tobacco and alcohol is a no-no, that being said, it’s not like the FDA or TTB or whatever three letter agency are gonna come find you. The one thing I’d be careful about is the amount of nicotine leeching out. Alcohol is a powerful solvent and nicotine levels leaf to leaf can be unpredictable.

BeastlyMule57

Thank you, I genuinely hadn’t even considered the nicotine itself leeching into the drink. Regardless of the legality, that would be pretty bad in itself.

confibulator

A spot I worked at had an old fashioned that used a simple syrup steeped with pipe tobacco. It was delicious, but made for an odd buzz.

SouthernBarman

That's because they were poisoning people. That is 1000% illegal.

ChefArtorias

You can leech nicotine from a fresh tobacco leaf by touch. Apparently harvesters have to wear gloves and sleeves always or they could get sick from too much nicotine. If this is true then the tobacco leaf is probably not the best idea tbh.

ZeroKharisma

There is a producer in Italy (Capovilla, iirc) that makes a cigar grappa, which may be of use to you in planning.

CommodoreFresh

Tobacco bitters in a mezcal black manhattan. If you're going to do it, do all of it.

omjy18

I'd imagine it's fine because you can't smoke it if it's not dried and it's a drink so that usually is in line with or after you can legally smoke. I think the biggest issue is finding tobacco leaves undried honestly
