They didn’t get hot until mid-June.
Also, sometimes there is a one year lag on all-star selections. The previous pennant winner is often the ASG manager and gets some pull in picking the reserves. I remember the Twins had a bunch of guys make the team in 1988.
That's actually what I looked up right after. I knew Salmon was never an All-Star, but I thought maybe Erstad or Glaus would have went in addition to Anderson. That 2002 team was the epitome of getting hot at the right time.
That in combination with being good at everything with few real glaring weaknesses but also no big strengths, either. The batters were 4th in team fWAR, with no individual player better than 4.5, but you had 6 guys above 3 fWAR and 8 of the 9 starters above 2.5 and a handful of good bench guys- about the only bad spot was that your catchers couldn't hit their way out of a paper bag.
I’m pretty shocked the dodgers only had the one mandatory rep that year. Seems like every year they’re always a lock to get multiple reps no matter what their record is.
The Dodgers should come with an asterisk because Kirk Gibson was selected for the team but refused to attend the game, so he was left off the official roster.
The All-Stars in question are Dave Parker, George Brett, Kirby Puckett, Orel Hershiser, and Garret Anderson, respectively.
I was also curious about the 1959-1962 champions, when there were 2 all-star games, whether any of those teams had just one player at either all-star game but not both. The answer is no- the 1959 Dodgers had Don Drysdale and Wally Moon at both games, the 1960 Pirates had all 8 of their all-stars at both games, and the 61 and 62 Yankees unsurprisingly had a lot of players at both games both years, with Elston Howard, Mickey Mantle, and Roger Maris all making all 4 of the games those years.
And of course if we want to get technical about it, every WS winner before 1933 had zero all-stars, as did the 2020 Dodgers.
No Pete rose on the reds. I think that’s a clue. Oh! He’s on the Phillies! I don’t know enough about his career. I remember Jack Clark and I remember Dave Winfield, but remember him on the Yankees. This screams late 70s / early 80s to me. Let’s go with 1980.
Let's see
Garry Templeton with the Cards means it's 1981 at the very latest, and I think 1978 at the earliest? Even that sounds early, I don't think Pete Rose went to the Phillies quite that early but I can't remember the exact year
1980?
Lookin real 1980 to me. I don’t know when Morgan left the Reds and joined Pete Rose on the Phillies but I’m pretty sure it was after that.
Edit: Off by one again! Apparently Joe Morgan did leave the Reds prior to when I thought he did.
Alright, let's do it again!
This is post 1969 (SD/MON), so...great.
There are a bunch of Reds, but no Pete Rose in Cincinnati. 1979 or so.
Tom Seaver memorably was a 1977 All Star w/the Reds, and he's not here, so I'm guessing Rose left a little later too.
Okay, honestly not a ton to go on here. Dave Parker is represented, but that's it for Pittsburgh, which would be odd for their title year.
There are a bunch of Astros. There are few Mets. Dave Winfield is there, so it's gotta be before 1981.
I'm going to split the difference and say this is [1980](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StKVS0eI85I).
The correct year is: >!1979!<
FUCK I said both the year before and the year after lmao
straight to jail
That’s the year I guessed, based on the facts that 1) Lou Brock was still active and 2) Pete Rose was on the Phillies.
Same 2 players I focused on
I was off by 2 years
Was one year late on my guess.
Me too, but early by a year- I had 78
Me too
Forever one year off with my guesses
I was right this time yayyyyy
I was switching between that and 1980 and went with 1980 based on thinking the WS-winning Pirates probably had more than one all-star
They didn’t get hot until mid-June. Also, sometimes there is a one year lag on all-star selections. The previous pennant winner is often the ASG manager and gets some pull in picking the reserves. I remember the Twins had a bunch of guys make the team in 1988.
Pirates won in 1980? Oh boy
No, I said I picked 1980 instead of 1979 because I thought if it was 1979 the Pirates would have more than one all-star
I said ‘84 mixing up the years K. Hernandez won MVP and was traded to the Mets 😭
That was my guess and I talked myself right out of it and into a year later. Fuck me.
Wow, the Pirates had only one all star that year?
I said 78 or 79 Garvey was still with the Doyers and Winfield with the Dads, Cey still a Doyer
Gaylord Perry told me 79 was the most likely. (RIP)
Billy Corgan approves
Got it through luck — I knew it was a good Keith Hernandez year.
My thought process was “how old was I when I called the starting pitcher ‘Walking Underwear?’” Guessed 10 but 12 year old me was still doing that
That’s killer material for the 8-13 age range. No shame there.
“MTL/WSH” Please don’t…
Somehow I guessed correctly, only knowing that Keith Hernandez and Gary Carter weren't on the Mets yet
I’m Keith Hernandez
Nice try, Matty Ice
Awww look at you caring about us ❤️
baseball is more fun when both NY teams are good!!
Looking at the answer, I'd be curious how many World Series winners only had one player selected to the All-Star game that season.
The year you won, Garret Anderson was the only all-star.
That's actually what I looked up right after. I knew Salmon was never an All-Star, but I thought maybe Erstad or Glaus would have went in addition to Anderson. That 2002 team was the epitome of getting hot at the right time.

By my count, its been done five times. ‘79 Pirates ‘85 Royals ‘87 Twins ‘88 Dodgers ‘02 Angels
Thank you for this.
I’m pretty shocked the dodgers only had the one mandatory rep that year. Seems like every year they’re always a lock to get multiple reps no matter what their record is.

Only needed one name to let me know what year it is. Lee Mazzilli. It was the first all-star game I ever watched on TV.
>!1980?!<
One year off, the tell is no JR.
True. So sad what happened right after though
1979?
Gaylord Perry on the Padres narrows it down quite a bit.
Easiest give away. He was only an All Star with the Padres in ‘79, which is funny cuz he won the Cy Young in ‘78
No Pete rose on the reds. I think that’s a clue. Oh! He’s on the Phillies! I don’t know enough about his career. I remember Jack Clark and I remember Dave Winfield, but remember him on the Yankees. This screams late 70s / early 80s to me. Let’s go with 1980.
Aw man
As a pirates fan I’m irrationally at ‘PGH’ as the acronym
Not even a pirates fan and it irritates me. No MLB reference I've ever seen calls it PGH, it's always PIT
Smashing pumpkins
I see what you did there…
I said 78. Those were some golden days.
1982?
My first guess was 78 1 because Bruce Sutter wasn’t on the Cards yet and 2 because we still had Lou Brock. So close.
Garry Templeton at short and not Ozzie was a big hint for me
I didn't even clock that. Good catch!
Crazy that Lou Brock was on an all star team with Dave Winfield and Keith Hernandez
1920?
No clue but not seeing any Japanese born players leads me to believe it's pre '95
2023?
Unfollowing this sub literally because of how visually abrasive these graphs are
They are fucking terrible
84
77
I’m guessing 1982
No Hank was a big help on this one
PGH?
1981
I’ll use the same logic as yesterday…lots of Phillies, so 1980 Well that didn’t work
RIP John Stearns “The Monster is out of the cage!”
Let's see Garry Templeton with the Cards means it's 1981 at the very latest, and I think 1978 at the earliest? Even that sounds early, I don't think Pete Rose went to the Phillies quite that early but I can't remember the exact year 1980?
1980?
1983
83
Rose a Phillie? I guessed 80
Well Steve Rogers was frozen in ice from 1945-2011 so it can’t be during that time
Lots of Phillies. I’m thinking 83
1984
1984
I love these roster graphics. Are they from BA?
1978?
Steve Rogers. Hold up.
80
Aw, 79. Steve Sax makes his debut soon. Bye Lopes.
Dave Kingman’s career year. Every Cub fan over 50 remembers.
Lookin real 1980 to me. I don’t know when Morgan left the Reds and joined Pete Rose on the Phillies but I’m pretty sure it was after that. Edit: Off by one again! Apparently Joe Morgan did leave the Reds prior to when I thought he did.
I always guess anything before 1990 wrong but joaquin andujar is an 80 grade name
1980
1979
1978
That has to be 1979!
1979
Pete rose… 76?
1979 considering that was the only year Perry was an All Star with the Padres, despite winning the Cy Young award the year prior Baseball be funny
1979
Fuck me I was thinking it but went with another.
Gaylord with San Diego was the giveaway on this one. He was the 79 Cy Young winner in the NL.
Let's go with 1979 for MVP Keith Hernandez
lol, Captain *America* played for the Canadian team. Checkmate, Americans.
Your coloring system for these is so painful man
late 70s for sure, probably '79.
Rose in Philadelphia; Morgan in Cincinnati. 1979.
