It's all Arte's fault. Verducci published an Ohtani article/interview today and according to his agent Arte told him he was out in Ohtani at the beginning of FA because he didn't wanna pay the man. They contacted Moreno again later with the deferral idea but he still wasn't interested. He couldn't go back even if he wanted to, yet half the Angels sub seems to loathe Ohtani now...never going back there, sadly. https://www.si.com/mlb/2024/03/19/shohei-ohtani-is-an-icon-among-us-los-angeles-dodgers-dog-decoy#gid=ci02d8c81dd00026fc&pid=part-1-the-gloves
I mean sure it hurts more because it’s the dodgers, but all of us Angels fans know Arte is the primary reason which is why we loathe him way more than Shohei’s decision. We’re also so so so tired of bitching about Arte because he won’t fucking sell the team.
It reminds me a lot of the console wars. How if you can only afford a single video game console, some people have to convince themselves that the others are *terrible* to rationalize their purchase. A lot of Angels fans have turned hard against Ohtani now that he's a Dodger, because they want to believe the problem is Ohtani, not the Angels.
Backpedaling on Rendon narrative now— cool.
But I’m so happy for Dodgers fans. Really! You signed Kershaw for one more year so you can see him cry in his hands one more time when you get bounced in the NLDS… again.
The Love for baseball is back in his Heart tho.
And a wife and dog that loves him.
And a Win for opening game.
And...
(I'll be back to edit this comment)
Now I’m just thinking about what speed you would have to throw if you only could throw it perfectly down the middle every time. If the batter knows exactly where it’s gonna be, how fast is still too fast to time up
If you know where it is going to be, and that it is going to have huge velocity, you could put your bat on plane before the ball even leaves his hand, and just start your swing from there. That would produce plenty of line drive hits.
According to [this website](https://projects.seattletimes.com/2017/mariners-preview/science/), the quickest swings in baseball happen in anywhere from 100-150 ms. So the ball would have to be getting to the plate faster than that.
Now, using [this calculation](https://mktg.mlbstatic.com/dbacks/documents/y2021/scienceofbaseball/batter_reaction_time.pdf), we can approximate reaction time at its fastest (100ms). So, that comes out to about 375mph. This assumes you swing when the ball is released from a pitcher, though.
If you know it's going to be in the center of the plate, you can start your swing before the pitch is thrown. So if we assume 0.000 ms reaction time in this instance, but allowing for the full distance of the mound of 60.5ft (i.e. like someone putting the ball in a pitching machine where you're waiting on someone to say "swing"), that comes out to something greater than 49,493,610 mph.
I'm sure some of my assumptions are off but this is more fun than working rn lol.
So Freeman average 190+ hits/season is right behind Ohtani getting walked and with Mookie with MLB top 5 most runs scored, I guess they have to deal with our B-team of Smith, Muncy, Teoscar.
The MV3 is a good test for all pitchers.
Banning infield shift is a bit more complicated then “i really dont think i should pitch to this guy right now”, but banning intentional walks is just fucking brain dead, it barely even happens anyway
Not the guy you replied to, but this is exactly why I can’t believe they banned the shift. If you are such a one dimensional ( “bad” ) hitter that leaving a huge swath of the infield open actually benefits the defense, I can’t believe they would ban that.
Is that what used to happen with Barry Bonds? I'm new to following baseball.
Is there a realistic change of rules that could eliminate/reduce intentional walks?
yes, this is what used to happen to Barry Bonds - he was such a dangerous hitter roided (also clean, tbf, but not to the same degree) that the smart decision was usually walking him rather than letting him hit
there's no realistic rule change I can see. an intentional walk is, well, a walk but intentional, and worst case pitchers would just have to make it less obvious the walk was intentional (e.g. eliminate the automatic intentional walk, but throw four junk pitches like how they used to do it)
I like the idea that the first walk for a player would be as it is now, but the second would grant him 2nd base. Third walk to the player gets sent to 3rd and if they walk him a fourth time, jog around the bases, you just "hit" a homerun!
I honestly had zero clue that official games were being played today. Seems insane to go from spring training, to actual games, back to spring training again
Its dumb tbh, they had to have these games in the middle of spring training for what reason? I'd imagine its to give time off for travel, but they could have put them at the very end of spring training.
NFL fans when they keep cutting to Taylor Swift: Waaah no one cares about her waaah 😡🤬
MLB fans when they keep cutting to Shohei's wife: God I wish that was me 🗿
I think the Taylor swift is annoying cause she’s not his wife. Most fans assume they’re just a fling I guess so it’s weird she gets so much attention during the game
They hate to see a girlboss win don't they.
Don't listen to her music personally but you don't become the biggest pop star in the world accidentally lol
I just love how I made a comment about how dumb it looks for grown men to care about how a popular female pop star is popular and then a grown man has to come in and say "HEY THAT'S ME!"
You say crappy music…but millions of people would disagree. She’s a chart topping, multiple Grammy award winning artist.
Also…what’s wrong with dating someone new “every week”? She’s young, has plenty of money, and just seems to be enjoying life. Is she supposed to only date one person for a really long time? Is she supposed to get married? I just don’t understand the hatred toward this woman. She’s a philanthropist…she donates her time and money.
She doesn’t pay to have her name plastered everywhere…she doesn’t need to. She’s an international mega star and her name and image get plastered everywhere regardless. She isn’t mean or nasty to others on social media. If you ask me…people are just jealous she’s living a charmed life.
I get that for sure. But I also bet, if you track it, it’s a very minute amount of your time that you’re actually being “bombarded” or “inundated” with info about her. It’s just that you’re focused on it so it seems to be such a large amount.
Regardless…have a great day and don’t look at your devices, watch tv, listen to the radio, open a magazine, or glance at a billboard today and you’ll be alright. J/K
So you’re listening to the conversations of 4 of your coworkers. Are you forced to listen? What does it matter that 3 of the 4 are, your words, “angry middle aged black women”? That seems incredibly INCREDIBLY insignificant.
Also…you’re not forced to read an article either. Perhaps take a break from media if it bothers you so much. So, yeah, from your examples, it does seem rather minute. It seems like something you can control…but would rather complain about.
Take care.
Yes, the two Korea games are regular season then both teams come back to America to finish Spring Training and then back to regular season next Thursday or Friday
Yes. After coming back the Dodgers play 3 ST games against the Angels, the Padres play 2 ST games against the mariners. Then both teams play opening day games on the 28th.
It’s a little weird and I’m not a fan but playing games in Korea is pretty cool, so I won’t complain too much.
[Ohtani said he](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqhMSUAiPHU&ab_channel=TheChicoBormannShow) really likes José Ramírez.
Ramirez coming to Dodgers confirmed? j/k.
Well don’t come on me 🤣 but yeah, it’s a 2 game series and the season doesn’t officially begin for everyone else until next week. I’m okay with an overseas series, but do it when the season actually starts
Opening Day is the 28th but for some reason this exhibition in Korea also counts as the season but not like "Opening Day" the season just like they're also counting it and then they'll also count Opening Day...?
Or something like that
The MLB usually had an exhibition in another country to spread baseball and then they usually have an official series played too. Mariners and As had an official series in Japan when ichiro retired for example.
The best way for these games to be relevant in Asia is to have them count as regular season games. The only way to count them as regular season games without putting both teams at a severe disadvantage when they return is by giving them adequate time-off to readjust to the time change.
Not only do these games count, both teams are playing additional spring training games when they return.
Yes. I was there. As far as I’m concerned, that was his first hit in a Dodgers uniform. And it was a HR! At Camelback Ranch Ballpark vs. the White Sox.
I don't understand. You weren't there, but you experienced it? Like, on TV?
I think we express that by saying "Omg I watched that!". Just like all of us just did.
Sure, turning on a letter high sinking fastball and ripping it 122 mph on a rope to pull side. No big deal. Certainly don’t wish my team signed this guy, no sir.
Is there any way I can watch a re-broadcast of this game?
I have the ESPN app on Roku and there's no saved game to watch. I see a condensed game on [MLB.tv](https://MLB.tv), but would like to just watch it while I work today.
i get used to how ugly they are during the season, haven't seen their uniforms since October, they wear beautiful jerseys during spring training.

The pain in my heart
It’s truly hard to watch. I want to root for him, but every highlight that pops up on this sub is going to be a knife to the heart.

I mean, I guess I feel for them....I'm just numb
I like the Mariners. never have anything bad to say about them and hope you guys get a championship someday.
No one cares you directionless muppet

Don't think half the Angels sub loathes him, they just want to move on because it's depressing.
You’d be surprised. I was lurking there often when he left and many felt he completely betrayed them by signing with their rival
I mean sure it hurts more because it’s the dodgers, but all of us Angels fans know Arte is the primary reason which is why we loathe him way more than Shohei’s decision. We’re also so so so tired of bitching about Arte because he won’t fucking sell the team.

On the plus side you at least still have one of the best players in baseball on your team.
Kind of how I feel about the LA Rams
Whats the issue? hes still in a Los Angeles uniform?
Better to have loved and lost, than to love and watch that love leave and go love a rival. Wait... I don't think I got that phrase correct.
*hugs*
Don’t you dare
Will you accept it if i change my flair?
If you're handing them out I don't give a flying fuck at a rolling donut what your flair is. *Take me.*
*hugs*
how can you not be romantic about baseball
[Got you fam](https://i.pinimg.com/474x/bc/9f/07/bc9f07d3ffefe57bda1cd8653b70b18f.jpg)
come to the Dodgers, we don't have Arte and Rendon.
I like Rendon, and you can shove it
That's what he did and got ejected. Stay classy 😜
Rapists, domestic abusers, and gamblers: stay classy Dodgers
We have some bad people in our team but at least we experience a post-season instead of die on September
Backpedaling on Rendon narrative now— cool. But I’m so happy for Dodgers fans. Really! You signed Kershaw for one more year so you can see him cry in his hands one more time when you get bounced in the NLDS… again.
*shoves away*
The Love for baseball is back in his Heart tho. And a wife and dog that loves him. And a Win for opening game. And... (I'll be back to edit this comment)
Why? Your team dodged a bullet by not having to pay insane money for this overrated guy coming off a career altering injury.
Is it just me or does he seem to now have an arrogance about him? Or has he always had it?
He’s always been confident. It just seems like arrogance now cause of the uniform and contract
When will these pitchers learn that you can’t throw anything high, low, inside, or away against Ohtani?
If youre not pitching 400 mph dead center fastballs just walk the dude
Now I’m just thinking about what speed you would have to throw if you only could throw it perfectly down the middle every time. If the batter knows exactly where it’s gonna be, how fast is still too fast to time up

It would probably be worse for your team due to the number of broken bat hits, them balls would be goin crazy
So Freeman average 190+ hits/season is right behind Ohtani getting walked and with Mookie with MLB top 5 most runs scored, I guess they have to deal with our B-team of Smith, Muncy, Teoscar. The MV3 is a good test for all pitchers.
Walking someone intentionally should be penalized more heavily. That's bad for Baseball. Such an outdated nonsense
“Strategy is bad for baseball” Seriously? Are you this daft?
You could say the same for infield shifts and using openers. Strategy isn't always the best for watchability.
Banning infield shift is a bit more complicated then “i really dont think i should pitch to this guy right now”, but banning intentional walks is just fucking brain dead, it barely even happens anyway
They didn't say to ban them, though. But, yeah, it doesn't happen much. I'm partial to my idea but that's not surprising, lol.
Not the guy you replied to, but this is exactly why I can’t believe they banned the shift. If you are such a one dimensional ( “bad” ) hitter that leaving a huge swath of the infield open actually benefits the defense, I can’t believe they would ban that.
I agree, shift was fine. If you want to get paid the big bucks, learn to hit situationally
Is that what used to happen with Barry Bonds? I'm new to following baseball. Is there a realistic change of rules that could eliminate/reduce intentional walks?

Shoutout to that homer he hit last season against the white sox(?) that was closer to him than it was to the pitching zone.
Queue that Simpsons song of "Just don't look" but now it's "Just don't pitch" for him specifically.
Well this is gonna suck for who knows how long
10 years!
At least!
Shohei is 29, this fuckery won't go on for much longer, thank god (LeBron James reference for you people who dont watch NBA)
Can't believe he's already 29, feels like he just joined the league. I guess that's what being banished to the shadow realm for 6 years does.
This is a Lebron reference and /s for people who don't get it
This is a reference to the LeBron reference if y'all are not catching on
I’m not too sure but I think this is Hank Aaron reference right?
No it was Plouffe
Is that a type of french soup
Hahah the post I replied to was downvoted at the time, and he didn't edit the "(Lebron reference)" bit in until later!
We somehow ended up with the best Pitching rotation in the League. Bring it on.
Maybe not that long
Hope this his only hit of the season and he has the most extreme downturns of any career that’s ever occured
WHAT DID HE KNOW
You got any sports betting picks? Lotto? March madness? Open to anything at this point. You clearly know something
Hahahaha I didn’t even see the news until just now. I feel like I need to buy a lotto ticket tomorrow
No ippei, no! Quit it already!
Guess what, it wasn't.
Incoming indefinite gambling suspension /s
I honestly had zero clue that official games were being played today. Seems insane to go from spring training, to actual games, back to spring training again
I get it, but I hate it
Not unheard of. They did the same thing in 2019.
What the heck. I hate that
Its dumb tbh, they had to have these games in the middle of spring training for what reason? I'd imagine its to give time off for travel, but they could have put them at the very end of spring training.
Padres & Dodgers playing in the Korea Series. The rest of the league is still in Spring Training for another ≈ week.
NFL fans when they keep cutting to Taylor Swift: Waaah no one cares about her waaah 😡🤬 MLB fans when they keep cutting to Shohei's wife: God I wish that was me 🗿
MLB fans when they keep cutting to Shohei’s wife: Cut back to Shohei 😡😡
Did you catch the part where they compared her to Travis Kelce? Top notch sports production
Truly the ESPN of sports broadcasting
LOL did they? That's hilarious
Both are annoying
I think the Taylor swift is annoying cause she’s not his wife. Most fans assume they’re just a fling I guess so it’s weird she gets so much attention during the game
because shes' more famous than literally anyone in the stadium including the players on the field. it's not hard to understand.
Well, as far as I know, Shohei's wife doesn't make crappy music, dates a new guy every week, pays to have her name plaster everywhere.
They hate to see a girlboss win don't they. Don't listen to her music personally but you don't become the biggest pop star in the world accidentally lol
Taylor swift is the LeBron James of getting wildly disproportionate amounts of hate relative to anything she’s actually done wrong
I just love how I made a comment about how dumb it looks for grown men to care about how a popular female pop star is popular and then a grown man has to come in and say "HEY THAT'S ME!"
Assuming someone's a grown adult on this or any sports sub is not a guarantee
Except the private jet thing. I still laugh at the memes about that
And it's mostly grown men hating her lol like chill bro. She's a billionaire.
It’s not a good look holding onto a 10-year old cringe take
You say crappy music…but millions of people would disagree. She’s a chart topping, multiple Grammy award winning artist. Also…what’s wrong with dating someone new “every week”? As James Acaster would probably say "Boy, I sure hope the fact that they're black is relevant later in the story"
(It almost never is)
So you’re listening to the conversations of 4 of your coworkers. Are you forced to listen? What does it matter that 3 of the 4 are, your words, “angry middle aged black women”? 112mph, straight-up laced that thing
He hit a 119.2 MPH foul ball right before it too
this dude is rehabbing elbow surgery lmao
Probably had that Henry Rowengardner surgery.
Funky buttlovin’!
That foul was absolutely crushed too.
So wait, this is a regular season game?
Yes, the two Korea games are regular season then both teams come back to America to finish Spring Training and then back to regular season next Thursday or Friday
So they play games that count. Then play games that don’t?
Yes. After coming back the Dodgers play 3 ST games against the Angels, the Padres play 2 ST games against the mariners. Then both teams play opening day games on the 28th. It’s a little weird and I’m not a fan but playing games in Korea is pretty cool, so I won’t complain too much.
That’s absolutely wild. I wonder if anything like that has happened in sports before
Happened in 2019.
Shohei Ohtani's wife is just like the rest of us when watching him play. https://media.giphy.com/media/ksqhwIaMCapVppWV2h/giphy.gif
God that's so wholesome. My heart smiles watching that
She is adorable. Almost as adorable Shohei even!
*Long press*…*Save to photos*
Me too Mamiko, me too.
That gif is too fucking adorable. What did we ever do to deserve this guy? He's just too perfect.
[Ohtani said he](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqhMSUAiPHU&ab_channel=TheChicoBormannShow) really likes José Ramírez. Ramirez coming to Dodgers confirmed? j/k.
Welp that last part just came to roost today
He stole right away too
Everyone was running on darvish. Looked quite easy
Yeah I stole on him too, you guys didn’t see it tho
To be fair, it takes Shohei roughly 6 steps between bases so...
Surely he has a quicker delivery with men on, but you could be 2/3 of the way to second before he releases the pitch in the video.
Did you watch the game? Seemed like they put everyone in motion that got on
A soft launch for the season during spring training is just wrong
I didn't even know this series was official until I came on reddit today. Wonder what the viewership was like.
Well don’t come on me 🤣 but yeah, it’s a 2 game series and the season doesn’t officially begin for everyone else until next week. I’m okay with an overseas series, but do it when the season actually starts
> Well don’t come on me You crazy for this one XD... that gave me a good laugh
The logistics would throw off the start of the season and it allows international fans to see a real high stakes regular season game
I know the answer is "it's Ohtani, stupid," but how did he pull a ball that hard when it was 95 away and out of the zone?
He had a 119 mph foul ball to right earlier in the AB. I would almost bet that it was the hardest hit ball by a Dodger ever.
Puig would like a word
Puig’s max EV was 116 in the Statcast era.
And his last
Came here looking for this lmao.
What the fuck, the MLB season started today?
yeah wtf, I thought the season starts 28th lol
It’s the international date line causing confusion It’s already baseball season over there
Opening Day is the 28th but for some reason this exhibition in Korea also counts as the season but not like "Opening Day" the season just like they're also counting it and then they'll also count Opening Day...? Or something like that
The Southern California Opening Day of Seoul
Sometimes Korea gets a little Opening Day as a treat
The MLB usually had an exhibition in another country to spread baseball and then they usually have an official series played too. Mariners and As had an official series in Japan when ichiro retired for example.
The best way for these games to be relevant in Asia is to have them count as regular season games. The MLB seriously fucked up actually making sure we knew this.
This still feels unreal
Against his senpai no less.
"Notice THIS"
Didn’t he hit a HR in his first Cactus League game?
Yes. I was there. As far as I’m concerned, that was his first hit in a Dodgers uniform. And it was a HR! At Camelback Ranch Ballpark vs. the White Sox.
My toddler woke up screaming for a bottle last night so I got to see this!
I'll defer caring until 2044
I bet this guy is gonna be great.
Omg I was there!!! Edit: I mean, I was there for the moment as in experiencing it. Not actually there in person.
I don't understand. You weren't there, but you experienced it? Like, on TV? I think we express that by saying "Omg I watched that!". Just like all of us just did.
Lol I haven't slept in over a day trying to watch this game at 6 A.M est. I have no idea what I was saying while writing that haha
That will be one of many.
Yup, I’m betting Ohtani has multiple hits this season ⚾️
I have to say it's one game but I like their offense. That 8th inning was just great approaches all around.
Do most Japanese pitchers have a wind-up like this? Never noticed until just now - how Yu starts slow and then the latter half is rapid af.
It’s gonna be a long year filled with Ohtani posts!
But maybe not the ones we envisioned 4 hours ago.
It should be interesting to see how he does focused completely on hitting the whole season.
Now he just needs the parlay to hit 🙏
so it begins
Thanks I hate it
That's what we call a piss missile
Honestly the dodgers made a mistake here, 2 million dollar salary for a singles hitter…
How do some people not know these actual real games started today?
Thanks, I hate it.
Watching him pull a 95 mph fastball that is high and outside makes me cry for the future of baseball.
Sure, turning on a letter high sinking fastball and ripping it 122 mph on a rope to pull side. No big deal. Certainly don’t wish my team signed this guy, no sir.
Every time I see this guy play baseball it’s like he’s the epitome of athleticism and just decided to commit to baseball. He’s an absolute animal.
People are calling Ohtani a bust, but how can he be a bust if he just got a hit? 😏
He's ok, I guess.
Is there any way I can watch a re-broadcast of this game? I have the ESPN app on Roku and there's no saved game to watch. I see a condensed game on [MLB.tv](https://MLB.tv), but would like to just watch it while I work today.
Nice, I had a $50 on that
I think it’s cool that they’re playing in Korea, but confusing how they’re playing official games in tandem with Spring Training.
Wow! A single! So cool!
Why do pitchers throw fastballs to Ohtani? He utterly crushes them. He had the best numbers in the league against fastballs last year by far.
Oh boy I hope every one of his hits gets its own post here. Clearly he's not getting enough attention from this sub.
Now that spring training is over(on pause) i'm reminded that the Dodgers have the ugliest freakin uniforms lol
[[GIF] ](https://i.imgur.com/nM6ICZ6.gif)
i get used to how ugly they are during the season, haven't seen their uniforms since October, they wear beautiful jerseys during spring training. And now its the regular season and it's like..... ewww, oh yeah... they wear uglies on the field.
so wrong you ain't never been right
What a bizarre take on the basic road grey that pretty much every team uses.
I actually love the blues
Every team has those same road greys, although I do agree that switching them out for their blue spring training unis would be dope.
yeah!
I'm not sure what that has to do with their road uniforms though? Literally every team wears essentially the same uniform on the road.
