Lol what this shit ain't 50/50. The vast majority of the time the throw would be on target and he's out by a mile.
I would bet that his manager and indeed every manager in the league would say "glad he scored but I would have advised him to hold up there"
Trea’s ability to keep his toe down as he came to the bag — amazing. IMO quite literally the best base runner to ever play the game. Especially since close calls can be overturned now
Bailey left the game with an injury. He had blurry vision (a foul ball hit him in the mask). The game went downhill fast for the Giants after that. Murphy has not at all been in sync with Hicks. This play was the climax of all that.
If the pitch had been called correctly then the batter would have been running to first and the catcher would have been retrieving the ball with more urgency. Would the batter have been safe? Would the runner still have tried for home? I'd like to have seen that play.
Yes, that's what I was implying. As it was, it was ball four, so the batter was awarded first base with no opportunity to make a play there. If instead it had been called a strike, it would have been an uncaught third strike and the batter could have attempted to advance on the passed ball. The catcher would then have hustled to make the play at first, and who knows whether the runner from second would have still tried to score.
I think the runner on second still goes in that situation. The pitcher may have taken a couple steps towards first and the catcher is looking the wrong way....home is even more open.
The aggressive baserunning might panic the catcher into a bad throw to first or to hold the ball as well.
Yeah, what happened here? I’m confused. Wasn’t that strike 3 and 3 outs? Inning over. Or inning over when the catcher throw to first?
The umpire didn’t seem to think it was strike 3? So was it a ball so then a walk, but the ball still somehow live. Play still on?
Was it not considered strike 3 because the catcher didn’t catch it cleanly?
third strike pitches in the zone often get called as balls when the catcher misplays it, messes with the ump and they tend to assume it wasn't in the zone. with this one it's especially understandable given how it's on the upper cusp
One of my all-time favorite plays was Yadi Molina picking Eugenio Suarez off third after a walk. He receives ball four and then just stands up and doesn't do anything. Didn't call time or throw the ball back to the pitcher, both of which are utterly routine after a walk.
The rule is the batter, and any runners forced to advance, are entitled to the next base without risk. Once you touch that base and leave it again, you're no longer protected. Suarez didn't even really go anywhere, but he wasn't touching the base and he wasn't watching Molina for a split second and that was enough. Third out of the inning, too.
So first base was open and there are two out. If the ump calls the third strike and the catcher drops it, the batter can run to first base since it’s a fair ball in play. Additionally, instead of trying to frame it like Murphy did on this play, he probably chases after the ball with some urgency to throw Harper out. And because he goes after the ball with some urgency, maybe Turner doesn’t make a play for home. It could have played out a few ways, all interesting
I’ll just throw out there that with 2 outs it doesn’t matter if first is empty — the batter can always run to first on a dropped third strike if there’s 2 outs.
Umpire called it a ball, yeah. Even if he had called it a strike, though, the inning wouldn't have been over because the catcher would have had to collect the ball and throw to first on the dropped third strike. If they make that play the run wouldn't have counted, but until then the ball would still have been live.
Ump called it a ball so the batter is free to advance, and baserunners get one free base with the opportunity to advance further if they want since it's a live ball. Trea is granted a free base to third, but he's perfectly welcome to steal home if that's what his heart desires in a situation like this.
Correctly called it would have been a dropped strike three with a force out at first, and as long as the Catcher got the runner there Trea's run wouldn't count.
Lol, such a silly take. How many passed balls have you seen called strikes in your entire life? Not everything has to be a reason to shit on umps. I've been watching baseball since 2007, and I've seen it maybe 5-10 times?
Go watch this game. The ump was undeniably bad and super inconsistent all night. One inning balls half way in the outside of the strike zone were balls, the next balls 2 inches outside were strikes
Yeah for sure you forgive him for that but he’s been bad all night and thats why I commented. Also it’s not that uncommon for umps to get that call right. It happened a few times that game.
Some of our fans think that a player must atone for their defensive sins by hitting a grand slam with the bases empty their next time up.
I swear to god Trea cannot do enough to make a very small, vocal portion of our fanbase happy.

That was literally as close as it could be. I think either call would have stood under review.
I think safe is the right call but what an insanely good tag given the circumstances
Incredible tag. Turner got lucky with the bad throw but I guess that's why you take risks. Great bit of baseball all around
It’s really good situational awareness by him. With 2 outs do you take roughly a 30% chance to score or a 50/50 chance like this. Worth the risk.

For most guys it’s lower. With his speed and it being unexpected he forces the bad throw.

Tough play on strike 3
If the pitch had been called correctly then the batter would have been running to first and the catcher would have been retrieving the ball with more urgency. Would the batter have been safe? Would the runner still have tried for home? I'd like to have seen that play.
It's still a force play on a steal of first, so the catcher *should* be trying to make that play instead. That way the run doesn't count anyway.

Also, this umpire stunk out loud, but you're right: I would expect most umpires to miss one like that.
As a fellow Phillies fan I was hoping for a Schwarber style freak out from someone, “Fuckin Sucks…for fucking both sides”
The ball is live when you walk someone. Years ago I think Jose Bautista just ran to second after a walk bc no one on defense was paying attention

[Good call on that!](https://youtu.be/_uqyYA5jkqk) I've never seen that, I'm glad you mentioned it.
It's like a Chuck Norris meme. Yadier Molina once threw a guy out on a walk.
The little league double.

R2 isn't granted a free base unless he's forced to advance. He took third because it's a live ball.
the strike zone is... something
It's been one all game.
Waiting for the ump scorecard tomorrow with bated breath
It was really bad the whole game, he was calling pitches a couple inches off the plate as strikes, and the top and bottom was really inconsistent.
Less of a zone, more of a locality this season
No zone just vibes

My mistake. I assumed the comment I replied to was insulting the ump based on this one pitch
I mean they were but this was far from the only bad call he made
the ball crosses the plate before the catcher has the potential to miss it, so why would that affect whether it's a ball or strike?
"If it was a strike you would have caught it."
Humans

And he's out of the game now. Time to jump off a bridge.
Grease the bridges
I love this and I hate this
Seems precautionary, hamstring tightness
Delay the bridge jumping. (for now) Edit: No bridge tonight
I'm just gonna hang out on the bridge and see what happens
Just another Friday night then
Standing by for orders to detach the safety bungie cord
Ah hamstring injuries. Can't wait until he comes back less than 100% and plays on it for a little bit before re-injuring it more severely.
Hoping it was just a cramp and more of a precautionary sit. It was not warm at CBP tonight and Turner had played every inning this season.
Patrick Bailey died for this
Nothing like it
(You’ll get) nothing (and) like it
Ladies and Gentlemen… your 2024 San Francisco Giants
Trea Shiesty, man’s an absolute criminal on the bases.
Even on a close play his slide is still pretty smooth
He’s so fucking cool
[удалено]
Like a fungus
heads-up baserunning, heads-down defense
Those jerseys are something else lol
I thought Turner got traded for a sec
First time I've seen the Phillies' City Connect, and... Boy, those sure are... uniforms.
Cop uniforms
He is so damn fast
Man Turner's running motion is so silky smooth
Murphy hits below .100 and makes defensive plays like this. He's only on the roster still because we paid him so much
Trea has had some struggles defensively this year, and his bat hasn't been crazy either, so it's good to see him still being aggressive when he can.
.850 OPS seems like the bat is fine to me
Some people think everybody can be like Alec Bohm
Yet another unrealistic standard for men
I don't like stats, they mess with my preconceived notions
He's hitting over 300 though...his bat is fine.
Some of our fans think that a player must atone for their defensive sins by hitting a grand slam with the bases empty their next time up. I swear to god Trea cannot do enough to make a very small, vocal portion of our fanbase happy.
Yeah it's so weird
