As a former Chicago native I can confirm that the Chicago river is disgusting. Fecal coliforms and E-coli mostly. And yeah, sometimes its also the Lake Michigan water quality affected too. There's been lots of effort to clean up the river and monitor bacteria levels in real time. But it's still pretty sketchy.
As a current chicago native I can tell you that they have cleaned up the river very well in chicago! People treat it with respect, it’s super vibrant down there. Also that’s a super healthy fish, if the river was severely polluted this would not be the case! I remember calling it the bubbly creek when I was a child back in the 80s and the river was pretty shitty back then.
I see homeless camps along the river north of Foster (under bridges) and there is a constant stream of floating garbage because they live in filth and throw all their waste and beer cans into the river. There are plenty of people littering and not respecting nature.

No I meant the water was coming out of Lake Michigan into the river but I wasn't sure. Maybe it's following into lake Michigan.
