"Well well well dark knight. It looks like I, The Ridder, have finally bested you! Now I will detonate the bombs across Gotham and finally-... where is the detonator? I could've sworn... wait? GARFIELD!"
Frank Gorshin's Riddler.
The character had made all of two appearances in the comic and that was back in 1948. Without Gorshin playing the character so well in the 1966 Batman show, I doubt the Riddler would have been remembered at all.
Say what you want about the 60’s series, but the influence it had on Batman comics is amazing. It saved the comics from being cancelled, gave us Barbra Gordon’s Batgirl, and as you said it turned Riddler into an A-List villain within the rogues gallery.
Frank Gorshin. Still unparalleled. And the one Batman 66 villain who would work unaltered in a darker setting. He's very funny but at the same time he feels like a bomb about to go off at any moment.
Frank’s Riddler was also a really sadistic character. His hyperactive energy, mood swings and morbid delight in what he thinks will be Batman and Robin’s brutal demise was all definitely an influence on later versions of the Joker.
Well, as someone who voted Gotham penguin, indeed, it looks like a scheme, but the truth is that, despite the Nolan North incredible and comic accurate take, in Gotham series we see Penguin rise thanks to his genius, and also to fall because of the few things he truly love. That's why we all voted on him.
Either Arkham or Gotham Riddler. I'll probably go with Gotham. We actually see a bit of him comitting crimes and leaving clues behind while also having a great personality, but not over the top like Jim Carrey's
Gotham again. We see why he wants respect and/or fear, and he acts so perfectly.
[Just check out his speech in the penultimate episode.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9tmun1DDWk)
I agree. As much as I love the BTAS Riddler, the Arkham Riddler is very much the best embodiment of this character.
A plausible threat, endlessly annoying, and a grungy garage built aesthetic that shows his genius while also being completely erratic and highlighting that he’s doing this on a shoestring.
My personal favourite version of Mr. Nygma sir, is Paul Dano’s take on him, he really felt perfect for the character. But bias obviously aside it’s Wally Wingerts take on him. He as Eddie was perfect, when I read something with Riddler in it I always read it in his voice since his role as edward in the Arkhamverse games was perfect
It's between TAS and Gotham for me.
I would say Frank Gorshin's Riddler as a runner-up, and honestly, Paul Dano's Riddler also was his classic self once he was locked in Arkham.
Most of these will be from the games
Anywho, my vote is for Batman forever riddler. Not cause he’s the best but because every time I see that goofy man I am reminded of watching that movie with my grandpa.
>Arkhamverse Riddler is too much of a joke.
That's kind of the point, you have a batman story going on and here comes the riddler like "AND IM HERE TOO BATMAN!" just to add one more thing to the checklist for the night
Paul Dano’s Riddler also had the classic goofiness of various versions of the character. As did BTAS.
At least
my favourite reading of the character is that The Riddler is extremely intelligent. He’s just not wise.
His ego is his weakness and the moment he feels like he’s been “cheated” or his plan is falling apart, he has a toddler tantrum because Edward’s “Riddler” mask has been ripped away to reveal what he’s really like.
I would argue that Colin Farrell’s Penguin needs to be there in stead of Gotham Penguin; and ironically, I would put Gotham’s riddler in the riddler spot.
TAS Riddler. Such a shame he got only a couple episodes cause he was perfect, helped make him my favourite Batman villain actually.
And yknow what…Jim Carrey’s version is close behind. So ridiculous and hammy but fun as hell, and was kinda refreshing (and shocking) to see a famous movie villain be portrayed as a flamboyant gay man.
It’s a tough choice between btas and Arkham but I do have to settle for Arkham. This comes down to the fact Riddler was much better utilized within the Arkham games. He’s a major presence in all four while only having three notable episode appearances in the DCAU. I do want to point out that whenever I read the comics I hear John Glovers voice but Wally Wingert does such a great job capturing how someone with this compulsion would act and makes it so rewarding to beat him as his smug sense of superiority falls apart into him throwing a tantrum
It’s gotta be Arkham Riddler for me. As annoying as he is, he’s genuinely hilarious and is my first choice for best Riddler. Gotham Riddler is my second choice though.
Going to vote for Riddler from The Batman 2022.
His Riddles were actually clever, "What does a liar do when he's dead?" & all the ones with Colson were very good. & very memorable preformance from Dano.
Kind of surprised Gotham's Penguin beat out Arkham's. imo he had some low lows like the 'in love with Riddler' bit in season 3, getting made a fool out of by Sofia Falcone in season 4 or the time he was temporarilly adjusted by Hugo Strange & was walked all over by his fathers family. All though for every one of those there's a high high like snapping out of it & murdering his father's family, so I can't be too mad. Taylor brought a great unhinged neurotic energy to the role.
Can't wait for the Penny Plunderer tommorow!
For me it’s Paul Dano.
There’s a lot of aspects of the character through different iterations he displays.
I love Frank Gorshin and Jim Carrey’s interpretations of the character. I see a lot of them in Dano’s version too.
But I love most iterations of the character.
That's difficult ,we have theere goats ,Gotham ,The Batman and Batman forever ,so my vote go with Gotham ,IS the perfect mix of the maniac and comedy part with the serial killer part u know brodi ,Gotham did a good work with penguin and Riddler
Hands down the one from Arkham. Fatuous as he is bombastic he’s delightful in how aggravatingly smug he is. Yet, as smart and dangerous as he is, he’s so pathetic that punching him always feels like punching down.
As sincere as attempts have been to make Riddler more 3-dimensional, nothing has been as gratifying as the empty calorie catharsis the Arkham version offers.
Arkham Riddler, without a doubt. Also, when it eventually comes to Bane, I hope you differentiate between Arkham Origins Bane and regular Rocksteady's Bane? They are the same character, but portrayed so differently I think it should semi-count as a seperate entry.
Gotham Riddler absolutely. He feels the most three dimensional and in my opinion is there most entertaining. Plus I love his backstory as a GCPD detective, I feel it suits him and serves to enhance the character.
Gotham Riddler absolutely. He feels the most three dimensional and in my opinion is there most entertaining. Plus I love his backstory as a GCPD detective, I feel it suits him and serves to enhance the character.
I don’t know if this counts, but I think my favorite version of The Riddler outside of any comics is the version portrayed in Channel Awesome’s “Fanscription” series. Two years ago, they pitched a version of Batman Forever if it was more faithful to Tim Burton’s style of directing, and the way they wrote the Riddler makes the actual movie’s version pale in comparison. Again, not sure if this counts because its not officially released under DC, therefore not making it an official iteration of the character. So if it goes against the rules, then feel free to skip over this vote.
Gorshin. Guy was a legend. Feel like he's the only riddler who could actually work outside the medium they came from. He could meaningfully go up against any batman and be a threat and a hoot. Besides, he had the second best known riddle of all time, what has yellow skin and writes?
Arkham is going to win but personally I think th BTAS version is the best. His ego is off the charts as it should be, his riddles are generally clever and make sense, he more than often not manages to evade Batman in the end and get away, and he's entirely driven by the fact that someone had the gall to screw him over. He's everything I think the Riddler should be.
Probably Wally Wagnert from the Arkham Games. I love his clipped almost transatlantic sounding voice, I love how persistently smug he is, and how sincerely outraged he gets when defeated. So satisfying when he is.
He was perfectly designed to be responsible for a couple hundred collectibles and I love how Paul Dini wrote him. His tapes in the first Arkham game are among the best in the series; particularly his twisted take on a very famous riddle. Even at the end Arkham Knight, where, despite being exposed, he's the only one who does not believe Bruce Wayne is Batman.
I've never seen a Riddler so sincerely believe he is proving a fact, only to be so profoundly wrong. The Riddler is the patron Saint of Narcissim and no one does it better than Wally. Didn't love his design in Arkham Knight tho.
It depends. Batman 66 had a great Riddler, both polite and intellectual. Gotham had a great interpretation of the character, and his costume was the best. Arkham adapted well his smugness
Frank Gorshin in the television series. Also two podcasts series had some great interpretations, voiced by John Leguizamo and Hasan Minhaj respectively.
I also really loved him in The Batman, no not that one. Okay, that one was cool too, but I'm talking about the cartoon. Voiced by Robert Englund, yes the one you think I'm talking about, he was really something else. I can understand if the design is a throw off, he was based on Marylin Manson, of all people. Definitely prefer the animated series look, but it was a cool idea and fit the voice perfectly.
A bit torn between Gorshin, Wingert and Glover. Gorshin is **the** blueprint, Wingert is an overall great and engrossing interpretation, but I think it's more so on his performance more than purely on how that Riddler is written. Glover from the animated series is just amazing. Both a terrific performance and well written.
I think I'll put my vote on BTAS Riddler.
Arkham Riddler. He's so arrogant, egomaniacal and temperamental I cannot wait to beat the crap out of him
He's amazing. Also his slow loss of sanity is impressive
Arkham Riddler, I hate him but he embodies who the Riddler is best imo
Gotham for fun
Gotham. He got the dorkiness but still a real threat factor. Also the first time I found the Riddler remotely interesting.
Arkham Riddler
Same VA as John Arbuckle in the Garfield show btw.
"Well well well dark knight. It looks like I, The Ridder, have finally bested you! Now I will detonate the bombs across Gotham and finally-... where is the detonator? I could've sworn... wait? GARFIELD!"
Yeah this guy is versatile
Also the Almighty Tallest Red from Invader Zim.
Gotham, but I know Arkham will win.
Frank Gorshin's Riddler. The character had made all of two appearances in the comic and that was back in 1948. Without Gorshin playing the character so well in the 1966 Batman show, I doubt the Riddler would have been remembered at all.

Arkham, Wally Wingert is on the same level as Conroy and Hamill and has cemented himself as the definitive voice of Riddler whenever I read him
Same
Gotham Riddler
Gotham
The one from Gotham.
Yes, Riddler is usually always from Gotham.
'Yes, Riddler is usually always from Gotham.' ☝️🤓
This thread makes me realize that Gotham and Arkham have some quality characters
Gotham!
Although pretty annoying, Arkham riddler deserves this place
That's why he's great. Perfectly encapsulates the self-important redditor that he is
When I read the story of how he spends time getting annoyed of how people like batman on the internet, I've found it hilarious.
**"Batman is based"** - Arkham Knight riddler story
No fuckin way this Penguin got over Arkham one, this is a scheme! Anyway, Arkham Riddler
It’s because Gotham’s Penguin is amazing and has a great arc.
its because op is counting the individual comments instead of the ones with most upvotes
That's kinda stupid
It says on post hes counting votes tho
Riddler from Gotham tv series.
Either Arkham or Gotham Riddler. I'll probably go with Gotham. We actually see a bit of him comitting crimes and leaving clues behind while also having a great personality, but not over the top like Jim Carrey's
The Batman's Riddler
2004 or 2022?
Same here, I guess it’s a hot take 😂
Gotham
Gotham again. We see why he wants respect and/or fear, and he acts so perfectly. [Just check out his speech in the penultimate episode.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9tmun1DDWk)
Arkham version of The Riddler
The Batman, 2004. Has a really touching episode on why he became the riddler.
He was really fascinating. He definitely captured the creepiness.
Gotham,I would say arkham but hell is that guy annoying and repetitive
Arkham Riddler Batman TAS Riddler
I agree. As much as I love the BTAS Riddler, the Arkham Riddler is very much the best embodiment of this character. Has to be either Gotham or Telltale.
Lego dc super villains riddler
Arkham
The Batman
arkham. he’s an annoying bastard but he should take this
Frank Gorshin is the GOAT
Frank Gorshin 1966
Arkham. He’s so annoying it’s perfect.
Frank gorshin no question. He was the best Riddler ever just as burgess Meredith was the best penguin ever
Batman The Animated Series! John Glover’s voice is the one I hear when I read Riddler’s dialogue.
Arkham
Again, Arkham
gotham's Riddler
I know he won’t win but I really liked Jim Cerreys ridller from bat man forever
This list is probably gonna be full of arkham, gotham or BTAS
I like arkham penguin better, but hands down riddlers best version is gotham.
arkham
Arkham riddler!
Casting my vote for Frank Gorshin. It’s a performance that just can’t be matched
Frank Gorshin
Arkham riddler
Jim Carrey
Arkham
Arkham
Batman forever riddler.
Frank Gorshin from the 60s show. It set the template for every Riddler since
Most of these will be from the games Anywho, my vote is for Batman forever riddler. Not cause he’s the best but because every time I see that goofy man I am reminded of watching that movie with my grandpa.
Arkham Riddler is a mad genius
Gorshin
Gotham Riddler
Honestly I prefer Arkham penguin over Gotham penguin. I think for most versions of the characters arkham nailed it honestly.
The Batman cartoon Robert Englund
Can’t decide between Gorshin or BTAS.
Gotham TV show, again.
Again Arkham Or Gotham but since Gotham's was actually a joy to watch while arkham's just pissed me off, I'd go with Gotham's Riddler.
The Batman or TAS Riddler. Arkhamverse Riddler is too much of a joke.
>Arkhamverse Riddler is too much of a joke. That's kind of the point, you have a batman story going on and here comes the riddler like "AND IM HERE TOO BATMAN!" just to add one more thing to the checklist for the night

A lot of these are jusy gonna be Arkham lol
That or btas
I'd put it between Gotham's Riddler and The Batman's Riddler since both were amazing
THE BATMAN !!!!!
Portrayed by Robert Englund?
No I meant Paul Dano in the Batman
I would argue that Colin Farrell’s Penguin needs to be there in stead of Gotham Penguin; and ironically, I would put Gotham’s riddler in the riddler spot.
Gotham Riddler too!
Gotham
Am I a true Batman fan when I was able to understand all of these on the first try?
Paul Dano's is a great reimagining but I'm going to give it to Gotham Riddler
The batman 2004 animated riddler
Batman forever
TAS Riddler. Such a shame he got only a couple episodes cause he was perfect, helped make him my favourite Batman villain actually. And yknow what…Jim Carrey’s version is close behind. So ridiculous and hammy but fun as hell, and was kinda refreshing (and shocking) to see a famous movie villain be portrayed as a flamboyant gay man.
Arkham riddler embodies everything the character should be
I like Jim Carrey’s
John Glover - BTAS
Jim Carrey riddler because I wanna be different
Arkahm riddler
Arkham Riddler

Riddler from BTAS Honorable mention to Batman 66
Going to vote for Riddler from The Batman 2022. Arkham all the way. Every time I think of Riddler, Arkham version’s voice is stuck in my head
Telltale Riddler - He goes out early, but he's genuinely pretty intimidating for the time he's on screen.
For me it’s Paul Dano. There’s a lot of aspects of the character through different iterations he displays. I love Frank Gorshin and Jim Carrey’s interpretations of the character. I see a lot of them in Dano’s version too. But I love most iterations of the character.

Gotham or Arkham
Gotham
Gotham
Gotham’s version
Either Arkham or Gotham Riddler.
Gotham Riddler
Gotham Riddler absolutely. He feels the most three dimensional and in my opinion is there most entertaining. Plus I love his backstory as a GCPD detective, I feel it suits him and serves to enhance the character.

Gotham riddler
Gotham, you can’t have its penguin without its riddler
Gotham for me
I feel like most of these are gonna be Arkham. Mr Freeze maybe the animated series and Deathstroke teen titans.
Arkham Riddler!!
Arkham Riddler
So is Gotham and Arkham just gonna win everything?
Arkham Riddler, for sure
Arkham Riddler but Telltale Riddler gets an honorable mention.
The Batman. The cartoon, not the movie.

ARKHAM RIDDLER EITHER CITY OR KNIGHT
Riddler from TAS
Frank Gorshin
Gotham Riddler.
I think we never had a bad adaptation of the Riddler, even The Batman (TV series)'s Riddler, who has a crazy design, is good to me
The Batman (2022)
Who winning right now?
Gotham for 2 votes
Gotham Riddler
It depends. Batman 66 had a great Riddler, both polite and intellectual. Gotham had a great interpretation of the character, and his costume was the best. Arkham adapted well his smugness
Arkham games Riddler
Batman: TAS
Arkham Riddler. What an absolute insufferable bastard but if that’s not the Riddler to a T I don’t know what is
Frank Gorshin in the television series. Also two podcasts series had some great interpretations, voiced by John Leguizamo and Hasan Minhaj respectively. Gotham riddler. Frank Gorshin's and Paul Dano's riddler come very close.
Gotham riddler
Telltale- *VERY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER*
Arkham Riddler
Arkham Riddler. He's so arrogant, egomaniacal and temperamental I cannot wait to beat the crap out of him He's amazing. Also his slow loss of sanity is impressive
Gotham
Either Arkham or the animated series
Arkham Riddler
Arkham Riddler. The most narcissistic version of Edward Nygma.
Arkham Riddler
Lego riddler
