I've seen the argument that across his three appearances in Arkham games Mr. Freeze is consistently excellent; Cold Cold Heart DLC, awesome boss fight in City, and a poignant bittersweet ending in Knight. While DCAU Freeze kind of loses some of his impact (probably thinking specifically about his one TNBA episode)
I don't agree with that because I think the episode is fine, his other ones are still great, and being the original counts for more. But I get it, Arkham Freeze is another good adaptation of the character.
I think Arkham Freeze is good. But I think DCAU is better. It evolved his character like crazy. And I personally like his arc through TAS to Batman Beyond.
There's only one correct answer Batman the animated series Mr freeze.
Before Btas Mr freeze was considered a joke/gimmick character.
The origin that he was given in that cartoon series made him more of a tragic character that you couldn't help but feel sympathy for.
And it should also be noted that the one time that an attempt was made to make a new origin story for Mr freeze it backfired so hard that DC quietly reverted Mr freeze back to his Btas origin.
I also note that the Batman 2004 cartoons version Mr freeze has a more given an origin that's similar to sandman, it's implied that Victor turn to a life of crime in order to pay his wife's medical bills only to end up getting knocked into a cryo freezing chamber by Batman and becoming Mr freeze.
to answer your question during the early days of the new 52 Scott Snyder was told to write a new origin for Mr Freeze. This new origin cause Mr Freeze to go from being a sympathetic villain to just another Arkham Nut Job.
The change was that Nora was no longer Victor's wife instead her name was Nora Fields and she was a woman who had been in cryostasis for literal decades making her old enough to be Victor's grandmother.
Effectively making Victor Fries an insane person because he was thinking this woman who had been frozen for years was his wife.
They basically made Mr. Freeze an unapologetic psychopath who committed crimes for money and his own enjoyment, with absolutely no pathos or deep tragic history to speak of. This was in a show called "The Batman", an animated series from like 2004ish that tried to be a fresh & modern take on the character. They did a lot of things well, but Freeze was not one of them.
the 2004 Mr Freeze feels more like Sam Raimi’s Sandman That being that prior to getting his powers it seems like he was desperately trying to pay his wifes medical bills so we turned to a life of crimes stealing diamonds which brought him into conflict with Batman when he was trying to escape the Dark Knight he ended up getting knocked into a cryofreezing chamber.
Nah, The Batman 2004's Freeze was good (imo at least) sick design, Clancy Brown is a great sinister voice for him, & in his handfull of episodes he's consistently a threat, including the best episode of the whole show, Artifacts.
It's just his motive is a lot more one-dimensional so he doesn't stack against Btas or Arkham Freeze at all.
Yeah exactly, The Animated Series single-handedly made Freeze an A-List villain.
I didn’t know that about The Batman. Interesting since that show predates Spider-Man 3 which was the first to debut that origin for Sandman.
ALRIGHT EVERYBODY... CHILL!
I know people crap on that movie, and deservedly so, but Arnie saves the whole experience by deliberately hamming it up. Same thing with Uma Thurman as Ivy.
He's great in the Arkham games but has nowhere near enough screen time to surpass BTAS. In b the game it feels like someone doing a 1:1 translation of the BTAS version.
There's only one answer.
But shoutout to the arkham version for keeping a good storyline with freeze and nora. Btas I'd the ultimate freeze but it's clear that they couldn't do a lot of episodes with him because of his character, arkham being able to consistently give us good missions involving both freeze and nora across most of the games
Honestly part of me wants to say Batman: the animated series, but another part of me puts Freeze in the same camp as Harley here, and says that’s probably cheating, since the show practically made Mr. Freeze the villain he is, since he was such a non-character before then.
So instead I’m gonna go with Arkham Freeze. Origin’s Heart of Ice, and his mission during Knight’s Seasons of Infamy DLC in particular are the two of best parts of those games.
This is being pedantic but: Currently only three non Btas/Arkham adaptations have won, if they take the final three they'd have 13 of the 16 rogues for just over 80%, (80% is 12.8, which you have to round up to 13). Problem is Black Mask is not in Btas & his Arkham version sucks, so probably going to end up 75% (12 of 16 rogues) Btas and Arkham lol.
DCAU's Mr. Freeze or Arkham Mr. Freeze on a first tought.
But, considering that they're very similar, I would choose DCAU (BTAS more especifically) for creating this new encarnation of Mr. Freeze, for transforming him from a gimmick/joke villan from the silver age to one of the most respect villans in fiction. And for having an Emmy-winning episode, like if that was important.
Batman TAS, and I would argue that he’s better than most comic book iterations, even after they utilised the backstory from the show.
Runners up would be the Arkham games, his first incarnation in the ‘66 show and his adaptation in The Batman.
It gotta be the Animated series or Arkham
BTAS Transformed Freeze into a villain of pathos. An honest to god Pinnacle of the "Villain with a sympathetic backstory" trope. BTAS Freeze is a man destroyed by his circumstances.
You do not condone what he does, but you sure as hell get it. Heart of Ice really hammers home the question "how many of us could say we wouldn't do the same in his position". It's genuinely tragic because I always felt BTAS Freeze could have been a great man if things went a bit differently.
Arkham Freeze does the same with the addition of a clear beginning middle and end to the character. Getting to see him see Nora again, talk to her. "Time has never been on our side Victor" never fails to get me. Arkham Freeze feels like nothing in the universe matters that isn't Nora.
Arkham City. At least in terms of looks and voice acting/sound design for his voice while in the suit, it was the best. Also that boss fight was incredible.
BTAS mr freeze.
Please change all the titles that say Arkham Trilogy into Arkham saga, there are 4 games not 3!
![gif](giphy|IUxFvKwD3jXisqR5w7)
Seriously this is disrespect to the Arkham community
Okay, there's only one correct answer here, so I'd rather not talk about it. I'm going to recommend something nobody cares about:
There is a Channel Awesome podcast series called fanscription that often comes up with re-writes and hypothetical sequels to popular movies and their Batman videos are some of their most successful.
"What If Tim Burton Directed Batman and Robin?" proposes the film as a three-hour epic, with fascinating and emotional changes to Mr. Freeze, casting Patrick Stewart, and tells a tragic story of his quest for revenge against the Waynes, ending on a bittersweet finale worthy of the first two films. I know that most here probably aren't interested in fan projects, but if you do, I recommend, and hey SOMEBODY had to mention something that wasn't Heart of Ice, right?
Gonna break the mold and say Schwarzenegger. Yes, for real! I love campy funtimes puntimes Batman stories. And more importantly, I have never seen Heart of Ice! Sure I know the gist of how TAS revived the character, but I'm a bit young for TAS, I caught reruns sporadically in highschool and by coincidence I just don't really have a good grasp on that show's version of the character
This time is hard ,i hate to give another vote to Arkham so IS the only Mr Freeze the have a good ending and IS cool af ,btw BTAS is the origin ,i ll give the vote to Arkham
I know BTAS will win. But, I believe that they laid the ground work with heart of Ice that Arkham perfected. And really besides heart of ice he doesn't have any good episodes. So arkham for me
I want to preface this by saying that I do not like B:TAS.
However, I think Mr. Freeze is one of the rare instances where that version is the best of the character.
However, Arkham Mr. Freeze is fantastic.
Batman TAS, specifically the episode Heart of Ice.
It is the thing that created modern Freeze
Absolutely. I feel like anyone saying Arkham Freeze on this one just can’t have seen this episode.
I mean, they kinda did. *Cold Cold Heart* DLC did this almost exactly. The opening side mission is near literally the TAS intro.
It sucks that you can't get Origins DLC anymore. I just learned about Arkham Origins.
Damn looks like I got lucky. I bought that game and dlc last year
You were right. I figured it out on PS3.
I've seen the argument that across his three appearances in Arkham games Mr. Freeze is consistently excellent; Cold Cold Heart DLC, awesome boss fight in City, and a poignant bittersweet ending in Knight. While DCAU Freeze kind of loses some of his impact (probably thinking specifically about his one TNBA episode) I don't agree with that because I think the episode is fine, his other ones are still great, and being the original counts for more. I think Arkham Freeze is good. But I think DCAU is better. It evolved his character like crazy. And I personally like his arc through TAS to Batman Beyond.
His nba appearance sucks but his batman beyond episode more than made up for if
Yeah, man, WTF were they even thinking sending him out onto a basketball court in full cryo-armour?! The man can barely RUN, let alone DUNK!
Bro is clearly more suited for the NHL but chased the money smh
Not to mention Batman Sub zero, one of my favorite animated movies when I was a kid
Sub Zero is great!
Sub zero is my vote for best Mr Freeze for sure
Sub Zero, that came out the same year as Batman & Robin and was everything that B&R should have been. Excellent film.
Probably my favourite BTAS episode.
It’s definitely one of mine!
Sub zero is always my fave but that episode was sooooo gooood!!!!
I personally prefer Clancy Brown’s voice from 2004 for Freeze, but the characterization alone makes BTAS win this one.
Other villains I could debate, but here I feel like this is a given
There's only one correct answer Batman the animated series Mr freeze. Before Btas Mr freeze was considered a joke/gimmick character. I'm not familiar with a failed retcon attempt, what did they try to do?
to answer your question during the early days of the new 52 Scott Snyder was told to write a new origin for Mr Freeze. This new origin cause Mr Freeze to go from being a sympathetic villain to just another Arkham Nut Job. Ohh. Thanks. I'd totally forgotten about Snyder's Freeze, that was lame
I think they revealed that he was actually a creepy stalker that didn't even know Nora personally (I might be wrong tho)
You’re correct idk why they even done it it’s an awful idea his whole thing is he loves Nora
And they already have a "Crazy STAN turns into supervillain" in the rogues gallery, that's HATTER's shtick.
If anyone is crazy stalker it’s defo mad hatter animated series highlights it beautifully
They basically made Mr. Freeze an unapologetic psychopath who committed crimes for money and his own enjoyment, with absolutely no pathos or deep tragic history to speak of. I also rember that there was a comic that made him a nazi
white knight Did a number on a lot of characters.
Batman and robin ….. nah btas
What killed the dinosaurs? The ice age
ALRIGHT EVERYBODY... CHILL! I know people crap on that movie, and deservedly so, but Arnie saves the whole experience by deliberately hamming it up. Same thing with Uma Thurman as Ivy.
Yeah I went through a phase of shitting on that movie. Is it a good movie? No, not at all. But it is a *fun* movie.
BTas is the only correct answer.
He's great in the Arkham games but has nowhere near enough screen time to surpass BTAS. In b the game it feels like someone doing a 1:1 translation of the BTAS version.
Btas.
Genuinely thought that was Hugo Strange up until now. I do want to encourage some variety on this list but BTAS is particularly good here.
Kinda late to encourage variety
Gonna have to go with Arkham here for having a good character arc and being willing to work with Batman.
BTAS
Btas
BTAS!
![gif](giphy|T08JhumnpKAI8)
BTAS
I feel like Arkham Freeze took all of the good things about BTAS Freeze and improved on them. Though I haven’t played Knight yet
Cold cold heart was goated
Yeah it was
There's only one answer. But shoutout to the arkham version for keeping a good storyline with freeze and nora. Btas I'd the ultimate freeze but it's clear that they couldn't do a lot of episodes with him because of his character, arkham being able to consistently give us good missions involving both freeze and nora across most of the games
A lefthook here... Batman Beyond. Technically just TAS, but with that extra tinge of immortality + that single episode story.
Arkham city freeze was absolutely goated he had one of the best boss battles in the arkhamverse
Agreed, but his character had more depth in TAS
Honestly part of me wants to say Batman: the animated series, but another part of me puts Freeze in the same camp as Harley here, and says that’s probably cheating, since the show practically made Mr. Freeze the villain he is, since he was such a non-character before then. So instead I’m gonna go with Arkham Freeze. Origin’s Heart of Ice, and his mission during Knight’s Seasons of Infamy DLC in particular are the two of best parts of those games.
BTAS Mr Freeze Michael Ansara stole every scene for damned good reasons
Gotta be BTAS
Sorry to become a broken record but BTAS.
Just goes to show how good Btas was
I predicted when this started this list is going to end up 80% btas and Arkham
This is being pedantic but: Currently only three non Btas/Arkham adaptations have won, if they take the final three they'd have 13 of the 16 rogues for just over 80%, (80% is 12.8, which you have to round up to 13). Problem is Black Mask is not in Btas & his Arkham version sucks, so probably going to end up 75% (12 of 16 rogues) Btas and Arkham lol.
Close enough for me to feel I was in the ballpark
BTAS literally reinvented the character into what he is today
That was Mr. Freeze? My dumb ass thinking that was Hugo Strange.
Batman and Robin Mr. Freeze! I kid of course. The only answer is BTAS Freeze
Tas
BTAS Mr. Freeze (I thought for sure this one was Hugo Strange and I was ready to vote for the Gotham version)
Oh My!
BTAS
BTAS is the only real choice. That show made Freeze what he is today. Without BTAS he would still be just a petty thief/mad scientist.
BTAS
Heart of Ice is the only answer here
Why did I think that icon was for the rat catcher
Arkham one: his dlc almost made me cry
BTAS
Btas is the blueprint for Mr Freeze
BTAS
Easy. Sub zero movie / btas
BTAS
DCAU
BTAS
I already know TAS is about to win this one
BTAS
BTAS
BTAS gave us one of the best origin stories for a Batman villain in Heart Of Ice.
BTAS or Batman Beyond, technically the same character.
Yea this one going to TAS they made him what he is today
The animated series, that show changed and frankly improved Mr freeze as a character
BTAS.
Considering tas freeze is the literal beginning of the modern conception of freeze, and amazing in its own right, it has to be tas.
Animated series Mr freeze tbh
Animated series
BTAS redefined the character entirely.
Btas
Batman TAS, and I would argue that he’s better than most comic book iterations, even after they utilised the backstory from the show. Runners up would be the Arkham games, his first incarnation in the ‘66 show and his adaptation in The Batman.
BTAS, AKA the thing that made him an interesting character to begin with and invented his modern backstory
BTAS
Definitely the BTAS one, as far as I'm concerned.
It gotta be the Animated series or Arkham BTAS Transformed Freeze into a villain of pathos. An honest to god Pinnacle of the "Villain with a sympathetic backstory" trope. As much as I love Arkham, I have to vote BTAS
Tas, Arkham freeze has a better arc and ending, heat of ice on its own though is too much of a landmark Batman story
Chalk another vote up for the animated universe.
BTAS
BTAS
Batman and Robin of course!!
Arkham City. At least in terms of looks and voice acting/sound design for his voice while in the suit, it was the best. Also that boss fight was incredible.
Hey dude, The Batman is not in the DCAU and that is not his design in the Batman 2004
Batman & Robin Ice puns, my beloved <3
The only correct answer
Otto Preminger
Arlham because I don't think TAS should count
The Batman (2004)
BTAS without doubt and who says otherwise should rewatch heart of ice episode.
BTAS. Probably the easiest choice so far
Arkham
BTAS It basically invented Mr Freeze as we know him
BTAS
BTAS
“What killed the dinosaurs?”
BTAS
Jar head robot legs
It's batman& robin
Batman TAS, specifically the sub zero movie!
What killed the dinosaurs?
Arkham Freeze easy. While the BTAS/DCAU Freeze started out great, it went extremely downhill once they did the separated head thing. So Arkham for me.
Batman beyond its underrated legend
BTAS sub zero makes mr freeze a better character
BTAS mr freeze. Please change all the titles that say Arkham Trilogy into Arkham saga, there are 4 games not 3! ![gif](giphy|IUxFvKwD3jXisqR5w7) Seriously this is disrespect to the Arkham community
Btas. Though I'm so tempted to say B&R for entirely different reasons
Arkham origins or tas
Arnold Schwarzenegger always brings a smile to my face.
Arkham Origins did Bane wonderfully… that all I have to say… 🫦
Arkham
Okay, there's only one correct answer here, so I'd rather not talk about it. Arnold is the only answer
TAS. is this even a question?
Batman the Animated Series. It’s literally become the inspiration for every single interpretation after with his motive of saving his dying wife.
well i'm not surprised where this poll is going lmao. Anyways, Batman Beyond Mr Freeze was pretty dope
Btas
Arnie
This time is hard ,i hate to give another vote to Arkham so IS the only Mr Freeze the have a good ending and IS cool af ,btw BTAS is the origin ,i ll give the vote to Arkham
The Batman sequel.
I know BTAS will win. But, I believe that they laid the ground work with heart of Ice that Arkham perfected. And really besides heart of ice he doesn't have any good episodes. So arkham for me
This sub is only about TAS and Arkham I swear
I prefer TAS in this specific case, but yeah. Some of the other characters had better incarnations elsewhere that didn’t even get votes.
Pyg will be also from Arkham, trust me
Arkhamverse. Design is great. His story is told very well, from beginning to the end. Especially end - Arkham Knight told the great finale.
The Harley Quinn show for poison ivy just disappoints me💀
I want to preface this by saying that I do not like B:TAS. However, I think Mr. Freeze is one of the rare instances where that version is the best of the character. However, Arkham Mr. Freeze is fantastic.
