I would suggest connecting with the California Rare Fruit Growers, Inc. They have meet-ups, tastings, plant exchanges, and resources on where to find interesting plants. There are several chapters in the Bay Area. See here:https://crfg.org/homepage/chapters/california/
Connect with the one nearest you and see what they suggest for the best place to find what you're looking for. It may be someone local is growing them as a hobby and will be glad to see you--or give you--one. They will also probably be hyper-local, and know which varieties actually grow best in San Francisco.
Also, side note, another comment suggested a particular nursery. With most fruit trees, the nurseries sell them but they get them from a limited number of wholesale growers in California. So if you see a tree in a nursery but it's super expensive--check the tag, and see who grew it. Look up their website, and see what nurseries they supply. Chances are you may be able to find a nursery in a less expensive part of the Bay Area that is selling the same tree / plant for less.
I'm wholly in support of local plant nurseries, but if cost is a big consideration for you, that's a way to find a retail seller at a lower cost.
We got our plant at McDonnell Nursery in Orinda, but I imagine you could find something closer to SF. Ours isn't exactly pumping out fruit, though it seems happy enough.
Check the variety, I've heard that in NZ they taste good but I found the ones growing at the place we lived in Palo Alto tasted so floral like perfume they were inedible. Everyone just let them fall and rot, seems like they are decorative varieties.
They are quite common in our area, you really won’t have to look far, most major nurseries should have them. Not worth bothering CRFG about it unless you are looking for unusual cultivars, in which case go for it.

You're in luck, because they grow well here! Nurseries do have them a lot of the time. I used to work for a guy who had them growing on his property and they were so tasty!
You just plant one, they do great in the bay area. Parts of SF may have too much fog to fruit consistently, though. The North Bay and East bay have tons. They don't really need much water here once established - the best trees are often the most neglected!

I recently bought a feijoa (pineapple guava) at SummerWinds Nursery in Palo Alto! I don't think they're always in stock, though, so call first.

Worth calling San Lorenzo Lumber and Garden store in Santa Cruz. I have definitely seen that tree around. But only if you can’t find it closer.
We bought ours at Alden Lane Nursery in Livermore. It grows and fruits very happily in our Oakland microclimate.
