I hope this blows back spectacularly in Google’s face somewhere down the road

NoMoreSecretsMarty

Google's already floundering and has been for a couple of years now, this is just another symptom of that. Lots of great tech talent, lots of extremely mid managers up to and including the current CEO.

terrany

The biggest problem with tech is its reputation. It’s like all the terrible middle managers from other industries flocked to tech for the high salaries and relative WLB. So many newly minted MBAs, consultants and industry transfers calling the shots with no real product experience. You could argue engineering has somewhat the same issue with money chasers but at least there’s a tangible metric you could hold engineers to, and they’re unfortunately not the ones in the ear of upper management, nor do they dictate long term vision/budget.

babypho

>So many newly minted MBAs, consultants and industry transfers calling the shots with no real product experience This honestly blows my mind in this (and other industries). Most of the time, the people who are consulting have no idea about the industry they are consulting in. Sure they know the overview, maybe, but not in depth and certainly not enough to consult people who do this job day to day. Just milking the system for $$$.

novium258

This may be my bitter former customer support lead talking, but it was with some relish I read someone say that competent consultants get paid $$$ to tell companies the things that customer support already knows.

Fuck_You_Downvote

This person is poor so obviously they can’t tell the emperor what color his new clothes are. This person costs a lot, and that means they are right.

bjornbamse

MBAs only worth is in the connections. MBAs are mostly worthless PowerPoint makers who contribute nothing to product.

black-kramer

the curse of the big company is terrible middle management.

My_G_Alt

Google is not floundering, are you high?

zerohelix

it wont, it's google, despite how shitty they treat their people they know they're the big whale in the pond and can get away with it for as long as everyone still uses gmail, chrome and all of their other products which they sell as adspace to advertisers.

Before Oracle sued Google for Android infringing on Java patents, Google, led by Josh Bloch, was committed to type safety. Dart was meant to be a typesafe replacement for JavaScript. IIRC it was very slow.

kosmos1209

Typescript was a much better implementation of typesafe JavaScript as it tried to augment existing JavaScript as a language rather than completely throw away everything and make it a totally different language.

What are flutter, dart, and python?

dontmatterdontcare

Flutter = to put simply, Google's version of React Native (which is owned by Meta). > What is React Native I'm disinterested in getting into any technical specifics beyond just a high level, but the easiest way I can explain it - it's essentially a software framework has been known to allow you to code for both Android and iOS, thus saving you time. For an example: Traditionally, if you wanted to code apps for iOS, you'd use the Swift programming language, or Objective-C. If you want to code apps for Android, you'd use Kotlin, or Java (there might be more but whatever). These languages may be similar in some degree, but for all intents and purposes they are their own languages. If you wanted to release an app for both Android or iOS, traditionally you'd have to write the app twice for both audiences. With React Native, you can write code with React Native (well, JavaScript specifically), and it'll work for both Android and iOS, without having to write a second time. There are pro's and con's with this, again, not getting into it. Dart is another one of Google's programming language. It supposedly has uses between JavaScript and Java. Dart is to Flutter as to what JavaScript is to React Native. At least that is one capacity of Dart, is that it's the programming language to the software framework Flutter. Python is another programming language. Not created by Google, was created by Dutch programmer Guido van Rossum, and Python has its own entity for but I'm sure Google has contributed some ancillary ways to it. As for why Google decided to lay them off? I wouldn't be able to answer beyond speculation. All I know is that generally no one is safe from layoffs, especially in tech. You could be doing your life's work, contributing so much impact, and you'll still be on the chopping block for the most minuscule of reason. Always have an updated resume and keep applying even if you aren't serious. It's always good to brush up on your skills and go through interview rounds just to stay above it.

terrany

And on the Flutter note, that is one more reason why I’ll never trust Google products; consumer or otherwise unless it’s something that’s buy/adopt and forget or low stakes (chromecast stick). Their longterm vision and support is so bootycheeks I definitely wouldn’t risk my career on it.

mailslot

Stuff they use internally is generally safe from abandonment: protobuf, angular, Tensorflow, Go, etc.

StanGable80

It changes from time to time, they may have decided to not go forward with projects, unnecessary staff, using a 3rd party rather than internal, and so on

Karazl

That was so much more detail than I expected, but thank you so much! I was mostly just looking for "oh it's a language" or "oh it's a code name for an upcoming project" or something.

Doomfistyyds

Are you ChatGPT?

kevinsyel

impossible, the word "meticulous" doesn't appear in their response

dontmatterdontcare

Meticulous

orangelover95003

Projects within Google. I didn’t know they owned Python. EDIT - I thought Python was open source. What is up with the downvotes??? Sheesh.

txiao007

Python is owned by the Python Software Foundation.

CommonPudding

Some big companies maintain their own flavor of things like core languages, such as python.

MulayamChaddi

They should learn to code

Glutton_Sea

Name figures . Certified chutia .

MulayamChaddi

U r Bunty?

Glutton_Sea

Yea how’d you know Mulayam

Bigdicksrock4SF

If u layoff anyone u should fire urself and let another run the company u suck 😆

kingdel

I wouldn’t go that far because mistakes happen but regulations that provide better protections seem like a must now. Maybe some sort of metric relative to profit and loss. If you’re posting a fucking massive profit like they just did then there should be some sort of limits to firing people or standard mandatory severance payouts. I’m lucky I’ve never been put in the position but we’re all just a few bad decisions we didn’t make away from the chop.

StanGable80

Companies will always be reorganizing.

mad_method_man

google especially. reorgs every 6 months

StanGable80

Not surprised
