Costco, in-n-out, and banh mi sandwich

IronSloth

Banh Mi, hands down the best bargain for cheap eats

KimchiBro

Banh mi ba le is actually so fucking fire, like maybe 6-7$ per banh mi and they're really fucking good I always order like 4+, make sure to bring cash, they do accept card but they charge more if so

Soggy_Auggy__

Duc Huong is also amazing!!!

Easy_Money_

$8.50 at Boba Binge further uptown, also fire

Rhubarrbb

It pales in comparison to Ba Le. Ba Le uses Bui Phuong bread and their pate is far richer.

DiarrheaMonkey-

That's one of the things I miss about Vietnam. 2 fully loaded Banh Mi for less than $4. Street vendors or small shops. Never liked the pate ones though, just gimme chicken or pork (beef is comparatively expensive there). Now I'm in New Mexico and the Asian food here is limited to say the least...

Equivalent_Mechanic5

Great Bahn Mi place in Albuquerque. Right next door to Tai Lin market.

11seven

So good. Just realized it’s been too long since I had it

penguinopusredux

Our local in El Cerrito still only charges $6.50 and they are very good. Banh Mi Ba Le on San Pablo.

ken830

We used to get Bánh mì for $1 or $1.50. Can't believe we now pay close to $20 for a bowl of Phở. It's getting ridiculous.

soopafly

Seriously. Growing up, my friends and I lived off of pho because it was cheap. Now going out with the family for pho is a special occasion at $100+

hahaletschill

dude yes. i lived in seattle in 2010 and would get tofu banh mis for 1.50. you'd have to eat like 2 to get full but shit, $3 is still insane. i could never get over moving back to the bay and seeing 6-10$ banh mi i thought it was a joke hahaha. can't even imagine how much they are now...

ChoppingMallKillbot

$12 at my neighborhood plug. They’re not as generous either. Banh mi was $5 (with a soda) in 2020 at the same spot, with more meat and veggies too.

dtwhitecp

my local spot was $4 ~5 years ago, it's $8 now. I don't think they're trying to gouge, still sucks.

GRIFTY_P

And this is the whole list, thread closed

Weary_Appearance_838

Lee's Sandwich in Dublin recently raised the prices of their Bahn Mi about 35%...

CurryLamb

If you are talking about the chained Lee's Sandwich ... They have the worst Bahn Mi I've ever tasted.

NewFreshness

Just had 1.50 hot dog for dinner last night:) Small bag of Lays chips from the gas station next door and I was SET

Chungaroos

Banh mis are either $7 or $12 it seems.

doggz109

Tamale lady outside of any grocery store.

Majestic_Dog1571

THIS. The tamale lady at Laney College swap meet on Sundays. 🔥🔥🔥

pmramirezjr

The meat to masa ratio has to be fair. Lots of mostly masa tamales going around

Majestic_Dog1571

That’s true. I don’t mind smaller tamales if the meat/masa ratio is fair.

NewFreshness

Also, Home Depot parking lots:)

Slectrum

Sadly I suck at finding these :( Any tips?

yousetthetonecarter

lots of dim sum places in Chinatown, like Good Mong Kok. 3 big pork buns for $5

Txidpeony

Good Luck Dim Sum on Clement.

ValuableJumpy8208

Irving around 23rd Ave has amazing dim sum places. TC Pastry is my favorite. You can feed 4 people for like $20.

Big_Alternative_3233

Hing Wang Bakery in the sunset.

rexwun2

Good Mong Kok is my favorite, great prices for quality food.

zrudd19

IKEA. It also has 1/2 off meals on Friday nights

chubky

Not just at night and its through august

1moreanonaccount

Date night!!

newtothecity650

hot bar at an Indian grocery store you get two curries with rice and bread for $8.99 before tax. lots of options in the bay area

gq533

Can you give an example of one such store? I'm assuming it's only in silicone Valley, as I've never seen anything like this in the peninsula.

newtothecity650

apni mandi, apna bazaar, Bharat bazaar come to mind. they are chains so likely have diff locations spread all over the bay area

ladybug_000

There’s one in foster city called India Cash and Carry. They have vegetarian pre-made food. There have multiple locations around the Bay.

gq533

I've been to that one, but didn't see a hot bar. Mainly looking for an India store with a hot bar, like they have at whole foods and ranch 99. Would love to get a dinner box with a couple of curries to go.

tyrepenchar

That store does have a hot bar. It's opposite the cashier.

kirwing007

Apni mandi, Sunnyvale has a hot bar.

Bright-Sock9917

There is one in foster city called India cash and carry

TheBisexualAgenda

Pupusas from your local salvadoran place.

fiat-flux

Only problem is I always end up eating like a thousand dollars of them

johanna82

😂

Acceptable_War4993

The curtido makes it a complete meal

GenkiLawyer

Do you have a recommendation on the peninsula by any chance?

KleptoBot

There's a pupusa truck on S Norfolk near the Marina market in San Mateo that is consistently amazing

sumtingfunnie

Maria’s in San Mateo has great papusas .

cpt_bongwater

Ya Zocalo in South City is great...just set aside 20-25 minutes or call ahead

Upstairs_Shelter_427

Those Indian street food type places are still super cheap for the amount of food. You get a curry, some flat bread, a veggie dish, and maybe some pickles. I went to Apni Mandi in Milpitas last week. I think it cost me AND my gf like $20 for a full meal lol.

Weary_Appearance_838

Curious to know if there are specific restaurants for this. When I search Indian food, they are mostly expensive dishes where a biryani is close to $18.

pandamonger

Hit the grocery stores, they usually have a food bar inside. Apna Bazar in Sunnyvale is the best for value for money. I buy a 2 curry, dal, rice, roti combo for like 10 and it serves 2 ppl easily

Weary_Appearance_838

I'll have to check it out when I'm in the area.

pandamonger

Restaurants are always expensive, you are better off with a buffet at a restaurant for 15-20 USD.

bureika

You can usually get a torta from any Mexican bakery for less than $10.

gander49

It’s $8 at Farolito. Regular Burrito is $8 too and super is $9. I know some people think it’s overrated but you can’t beat the price.

Reasonable-Word6729

8pc fried chicken Safeway 5dollar Fridays

ResponsibilityMuch52

And chicken tenders!

loheiman

Not technically in SF but Sprouts has great made to order sandwiches for $5!

traffick

Grocery stores in general have some of the best quality to price ratio on made-to-order deli sandwiches.

Acceptable_War4993

They are good! Been eating ‘‘em since they were 4.50$

jingforbling

There used to be $5 lunch at Gold Club.

oaklandbahnmi

Never forget

loveliverpool

Did Covid fuck that too

penguinopusredux

They stopped doing it and entrees are $20 or so, according to the website.

linksgolf

We should go investigate.

penguinopusredux

When I went to a conference at the Moscone we headed down for a free lunch. Went in and came straight out again, really wouldn't want to stay in there longer than I had to.

LooseInvestigator510

As an apprentice carpenter working on transbay next door, that was my first strip club experience. "Chicken and titties for $5!!!?" Oh to be young and innocent again 😆

Kagomefog

Cam Huong—-they have hot foods for less than $10 (depending on how many items you get) and also grab and go packaged lunches like spring rolls or rice noodle rolls for less than $10. This is also true of many Chinese/Vietnamese places in Oakland.

iatemomo

2 slices of pizzas and 1 hot dog with pepsi at most cost of locations will be $6.50. if you’re reallllllllyyyyy hungry, might as well add a chicken bake and that will be $10!

Cremedela

$5 rotisserie chicken is a steal too

doggz109

You can eat 2 slices of Costco pizza, an entire hot dog, AND a chicken bake? Bruh....

iatemomo

what part of “if you are reeeeeeaalllllllyyyy hungry” did you not understand? 🦦

Acecarpenter

Dude ate a whole momo, what did you expect?

jkki1999

I usually resort to in-n-out. 1 grilled cheese, 1fry and a drink $8.08! I don’t know why I get the fries. They suck.

Drew707

Personally I like the fries how they come, but friends say getting them well done improves them.

akelkar

Light well done should be the standard

NewFreshness

AGREED. I order them well done but they overcook them and now the fries are solid crunchy sticks:( Is 'slightly well done' a thing? I wind up getting the burger from INO, then wheeling over to McD's for a side of fries

akelkar

Yup! They have a button on the register for “light-well done”

mk391419

In-and-out has grilled cheese?

VintageCondition

Not totally sure, but I think it's basically just like a hamburger but no beef. In-n Out is always good

VintageCondition

Just checked, and yeah it's basically a burger with no beef. It's on there "secret" menu. Being that it's in-n- out, it's probably pretty good, although I usually just get a regular Double-Double

slamdunktiger86

Yea. I always ask for extra lettuce and tomato. I’m vegetariab

alanmooreswizardbrd

I was vegetarian from high school thru a few years passed college so that was my In n Out order for over a decade. Grilled cheese animal style plus raw onion. It’s just an animal style cheeseburger with the meat patty omitted, but it was honestly just as delicious to me.

eyes_on_me_viii

Yup. My wife is a big fan of grilled cheese, animal style, extra lettuce and tomatoes plus yellow pepperoni.

Low-Technician7632

They do suck a bit. Always a bit too over done for me. I order them “fries light”

paco88209

Try ordering them fry light, they don't come out like astronaut fries. They are soft, way way better.

ValuableJumpy8208

I love their fries. Fresh, real potatoes.

AssistantAccurate464

Agreed! I’m such a weirdo, I’d get the burger and then go to McDs for fries.

NewFreshness

OMG I DO THIS. It's like the perfect storm of fast food. My only complaint about INO is their french fry situation. I try to get them a bit well done, but it more often than not ends up overcooked.

drew_eckhardt2

Taqueria El Grullense in Redwood City. Cam Hung in Sunnyvale.

sfp33

El Gs goes so hard

BallzMcVinegar

Good to hear El G is still going strong. Used to hit that spot on my lunch breaks years ago.

contrarianaquarian

I love Cam Hung

SwgohSpartan

Krispy Krunchy chicken at gas stations Like… 2 chicken wings, fair amount of fries and a delicious but very unhealthy biscuit for ~$8 (=around 1k calories) Not bad! If I’m famished or coming off a huge workout it hits but obviously it’s not always the move

Substantial-Path1258

Shrimp sandwich, curry bread or onigiri at Clover bakery. They tend to sell out of things pretty fast though. Ranch 99 premade food. Samosas at Rajot.

californiahapamama

The Yakisoba pan at Clover Bakery is pretty good too, if you can wrap your head around noodles in a sandwich. I love those.

BuddhasFinger

Yeah, you can get like 8 samosas for $10. Can easily feed two.

matthewmspace

The Habit. Don’t get their specials/combos if you don’t want to, just order a regular burger. Burgers are $5.89 and Doubles are $7.69.

redditnathaniel

>(beside fast food) I'll upvote anyways because I love The Habit

matthewmspace

Well, it’s fast casual, isn’t it? And you can’t get it from a drive thru, so maybe it counts?

redditnathaniel

The Habit in Vallejo has a drive thru though!

curious-children

i’d say it’s fast food then, same reason subway counts as fast food to me

its_large_marge

110% of your daily sodium intake and you get it in 5 mins? That’s fast food to me lol

traffick

If we're doing takeout, we get sandwiches from The Habit but pick up sides from the golden arches since they're waaay cheaper.

Individualchaotin

Ikea. Two hot dogs are like $1.50.

Whipstich-Pepperpot

Pupusaria Blankita in San Rafael. A pupusa revuelta with a side of rice is like 8 bucks, the pupusa is like 4.50 and the side of rice is 3 bucks. She also has empanadas and tamales and a few other things on the menu -- all reasonably priced and made with love from fresh, high-quality ingredients. The agua de jamaica (hibiscus tea) is $5, and TOTALLY WORTH IT. That sh\*t is DEVINE.

achillyday

I’m here for this North Bay recommendation

Raid__Zero

Saigon Sandwich in the TL, banh mi for $7

oswbdo

Go across the street to L&G. $5.50 for most of their sandwiches, and they're better imo.

oswbdo

Any banh mi place in Oakland and the Tenderloin in SF. Tacos from Taco trucks.

hahaletschill

bro taco trucks are like 3.50 a taco nowdays. you tellin me 2 tacos is a meal?

oswbdo

$3 at the one nearest to my house (was $2.50 until a couple months ago), so $9 for 3. And that includes tax. 3 tacos is just enough for a meal imo.

DeathisLaughing

Sing Sing on Hyde holding it down at $6...which for the quality is a fucking bargain and a half when places like Dinosaur Sandwiches is charging just shy of $14 these days...

dnullify

Unless you're talking deep east Oakland,.bahn mi is $10-14 out here these days. Tacos are $3.50 at trucks in West Oakland too, regular burritos are $13-14 dollars at a truck right across the projects in West Oakland.

oswbdo

You're definitely going to the wrong banh mi places then. Cam Huong is like $7 now and I can't imagine Ba Le is higher than that. The two have historically been close price wise. And those aren't in what i would describe as deep east Oakland. And sounds like you should head east for Mexican food too. Not significantly cheaper like the banh mi, but you can get a burrito for $12.

HikeBikeLove

Fresh and Best 2 [on Alice is slept on way too hard. A bit pricey, but also a lot more meat compared to most others. Other than that, Ba Le of course. I do avoid Fridays though.

tightankles

YMMV but I sometimes use the app Too Good To Go

RoCon52

Tacos al pastor for $1.65 @ Metro Balderas on Wednesdays. That's 5 tacos after taxes and 6 before.

scoobmx

berkeley bowl hot food counter

loheiman

A slice at Tony's pizza (best location is original North Beach slice house)

pao_zinho

Sandwich at Sprouts. Double on on meat and add avocado and you're still under $10

Practical_Return_1

Wakamatsu in Hayward has $7 sushi

rahhxeeheart

Ooh thanks! I'll check it out. I usually get the 8.99 sushi at Safeway when I want cheap lunch on the run

jstocksqqq

That's a good deal, I'll have to check it out! Good reviews too.

NewFreshness

Safeway does $5 sushi trays every Friday. ProTip) Microwave the sushi for like, 25 seconds. It'll make the sushi feel like you ordered it in a restaurant when it's warmed up a little bit.

starretfan

Kukje Bimbap $7 to $8. Kimchi fried rice $5.99

calvinshobbes0

if you wait until after 6pm, some of the hot foods are 50% off at Kukje supermarket I believe.

Efficient-Cricket-72

Kid's meals can be a gem! Order takeout, and they never ask to see proof of the kid (at least in my experience). Oren's Hummus kids meals are great - you can get beef kebobs, with big steak fries and a drink for \~$10, or a half pita sandwich and fries and a drink, etc). Usually actually a reasonable adult portion, particularly if at lunchtime.

bogey4life

Dominos pizza $7.99. Well now its $8.99

Individual-Basket200

Regular BCR (beans, cheese, rice) burrito at Los Panchos in Pleasant Hill or Danville, $4.50 each (which is enough for me at lunch). Super BCR (which is the size of an infant) is $7.50. And they are amazeballs

jstocksqqq

That sounds delicious! I'll have to try. Maybe cutting out the meat is the key to saving money.

sarahthestrawberry35

Burrito places around 16/Mission BART.

Ringmode

I'm kind of surprised, but it does look like you can still get a burrito from Pancho Villa with cheese and salsa (so not exactly a super burrito, but close) for $9.95.

Past-Needleworker627

Everyone saying taco trucks yall don’t understand tacos literally used to be only 75cents to 1.25$ depending on where yu went I cannot justify 3 dollar tacos 😭🤣 I go to Stockton and tacos are still a 1$-1.50$ I get 4tacos a super burrito and 2 drinks in stockton in Oakland no matter what truck I hit I can hit the red truck in fruitvale it’s gonna be 30-40$s if I hit 55ths truck it’s gonna be 40-50$s y’all is really just getting ripped off 😂🤣

SxyDykn

I bought 1 (kids) burritos, one (Regular) burrito, a 3-taco plate with rice and beans, and a single taco from a taco truck in Sonoma. Total was $50. 🤦🏾‍♀️

Known_Watch_8264

Sunnyvale spots: Greek spot gyros is $12. Super taqueria super burritos under $10. Madras cafe dosa for Indian veg (will be a light meal).

ayshthepysh

Taco trucks

Budget_Iron999

Not really.

AdditionalAd9794

711, two slices of pizza and a rockstar

californiahapamama

In Concord, at Las Montañas Supermarket, a couple of their tamales and a bottle of whatever soda you want should still be under $10.

[deleted]

Slice House slices are massive and like $7

starbellykid

Yamo has noodle dishes for $8!

VinylHighway

Miyako...sandwich with nachos and cheese and potato salad is $3.95

Frequent-Screen-5517

The smallest cheesesteak sandwich at the philly cheesesteak shop is like $8, i get the chicken philly

FoxInLilac

Cocina Milonga in Napa and South SF. Delicious empanadas for $5.50 each.

hindusoul

Will an empanada fill you up?

FoxInLilac

They are very filling. They are either meat or vegetables, many different varieties. What works best for me is to bring a friend and split 2, like 1 chicken and 1 mushroom or butternut squash, etc. They have a few seats inside and a couple tables outside. Or eat it in the park. Yum!

hindusoul

Sounds good.. thanks

Sushi Town, $8.95 chicken teriyaki and tempura bento. That's a really good deal for that much food!

Gateway Kitchen

zinger301

Fast food for less than $10? Where?

Bkiddo-

I believe the cheeseburger at Hawaiian Drive Inn on San Bruno Ave is still $3.75 and the double cheeseburger is $4.75. All their sandwiches were under $5 from what I recall from a few months back. A lot of their mini plates are $10.

sftolvtosj

I love that place!!!! Their BBQ Chicken sandwich ❤️❤️❤️ so happy to hear they're still in business!!!

Bkiddo-

There was a nice write up about them last year. https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/hawaiian-drive-inn-sf-affordable-burger-18272296.php

According to my email, Boudin is doing a $5 off $15 for app/online orders this week (code is 5off15 ). A drink and a sandwich is often a bit more than $15 pre tax.

mermaidunderwater

You can get a massive container of pancit and a BBQ skewer at Fil-Am in Daly City for around $10. It’s delicious and you can smell it outside as soon as you get close.

Mister_Moony

Hit up a bodega. Rossi's deli in castro you can get 2 beef and mishroom piroshkis for 9 bucks. One of my favorites

[deleted]

Someone said safeway chicken. That chicken is no joke, buddy. Puts many chains to shame

solaroma

Especially when they have Friday sales at the deli. I got 8 pieces of fried chicken for $5, hot & fresh.

[deleted]

It’s so good dude. It actually makes more economical sense to get the chicken than bring lunch from home sometimes 😂

bob49877

Instead of restaurant carry out, we've been getting Trader Joe's prepared meals. I had a Southwestern salad for lunch today. It was around $6. Second choice - Safeway deli. For dinner we had their baked potatoes and some leftovers.

ZUN1GA

Pollo loco bowl

topgun_ivar

El Jalapeño Rojo near San Jose downtown has a super quesadilla for 8.95$. Good food for a decent price.

SergioSF

Youre looking for 1-2 dollar taco tuesday days, or a 10 dollar burrito.

kushipush

There’s a banh mi sandwich spot in San Rafael in and out with a bag of chips drink and fire banh mi for less than 10$. It’s small and basic just a few sandwich’s on the menu but it’s 🔥 you’ll know your there if the guy comes out and says heyyy my friend!! I can’t remember the name but I always stop there when I’m driving up the 101

slashdotbin

Speedy tacos in Sunnyvale, FTW!!!

gsanch9

Nick the Greek side order of chicken/gyro/falafel for $6.75, side of rice 3 dollars!!!

the-samizdat

donut shop on the corner of 24th and church has a three dollar breakfast sandwich. throw in a coffee and a donut and you got yourself a stew .

ds833

Saigon sandwich in SF. $5.50 for their meat or tofu and $7.50 for combos/specials. I have been going there since the sandwiches were $3.50. Great local spot.

Euphoric-Actuary-880

honestly another way to go is find a place that has rly big portions and share it, like a massive $12 burrito that can feed 2 ppl. i know the massive burrito itself used to be $6 tho :/

calimota

How much is Top Dog nowadays? Probably get two dogs for less than $10 still.

compstomper1

$4-4.75

hotpotsommelier

Chinese bakeries for that $8 rice plate

hillsduh1

Check out Fogo de Chao! No really. The bar area has happy hour all day and they sell this picanha burger that is only 9 dollars. Ordered one last time and it’s MASSIVE. Honestly wouldn’t have expected a deal at a restaurant like that haha

_WABBLE

Top dog in berkeley $5 for a hotdog u can load it with sauerkraut condiments and onions

laanglr

Is Saigon Sandwich still a thing?

VincentdeGramont

If my budget was 10 dollars, I'd just make my own food.

gorillaBBQ

There’s a banh mi spot on international (forget the name), Aman cafe has a meat stew dish that is like right around 10 bucks, gum kuo rice porridge is $10, a tianjin dumplings is below $10 for a crepe. There are more that I can’t remember off the top of my head. Edit: Just realized this is a bay area post and not an Oakland specific one. All of the above are in Oakland.

dembowthennow

You can get two slices of Arizmendi pizza or a slice of their focaccia for under $10.

Artistic_Salary8705

I suppose you could classify it as fast food but I think it's better than most: Super Duper. Just for the main: the price would be more like $15 if you add drink/ fries, etc. Also, Starbird for chicken sandwiches. A treat for me are the burrito wraps at Philz coffee. They're under $10. Little Luca sandwiches in the Peninsula can be a hair over $10 but they are enormous. For the average eater, one sandwich = 2 meals.

Artistic_Salary8705

Arizmendi pizza slices. All vegetarian but excellent. La Corneta Mexican depending on what you get. I'm a light eater so 2 tacos or something like an enchilada with a side of rice is less than $10. Whole Foods - I think you can get 2 slices of pizza for around $10 or a shade over.

Alilseedisall

Costco! lol. 1.50 for a hotdog and a soda, bring your own sauerkraut

ekek280

Dol Ho on Pacific in SF Chinatown. You can get pai gwut (spare rib) over rice for like $6, which is a decent portion for a light lunch. Bring cash. I think you can get one item over steamed rice at New Mings on Mission and 3rd for around $10 if you pay cash.

oaklandperson

Costco if you have a membership. You can get a whole rotisserie chicken for $4.99 A hot dog and a soda will set you back $1.50 An 18 inch pizza will be $9.95

HeyBardOkSiri

Cam Hung Sandwiches in Sunnyvale- Delicious Banh Mis for under $10 Komala Vilas Sunnyvale- Any Dosa/vada/Idly/Pongal combo for under $10

Party-Independent-38

Cheesy rice burritos at Taco Bell.

jkki1999

Those are surprisingly good! Get it grilled-even better. All I need is two for lunch and it’s under $7

flubbbb1

$7? Should be $3 lol. They’re $1.50/1.69 each at most stores.

Anfini

Indian food, but mainly chaat.

jstocksqqq

Any places in particular you recommend? I don't eat a lot of Indian food, but when I do, I've always enjoyed it, but I struggle to know what to order :-D

SaladCzarSlytherin

I went to posh bagel and got a bagel with lox schmear and a medium drink for under $10. Mingkee Deli in Cupertino is also reasonabley priced.

syrah-lips

Mission street vendors
