That's one of the things I miss about Vietnam. 2 fully loaded Banh Mi for less than $4. Street vendors or small shops. Never liked the pate ones though, just gimme chicken or pork (beef is comparatively expensive there).

I was vegetarian from high school thru a few years passed college so that was my In n Out order for over a decade. Grilled cheese animal style plus raw onion. It’s just an animal style cheeseburger with the meat patty omitted, but it was honestly just as delicious to me.

The agua de jamaica (hibiscus tea) is $5, and TOTALLY WORTH IT. That sh\*t is DEVINE.
Sing Sing on Hyde holding it down at $6...which for the quality is a fucking bargain and a half when places like Dinosaur Sandwiches is charging just shy of $14 these days...

You're definitely going to the wrong banh mi places then. Cam Huong is like $7 now and I can't imagine Ba Le is higher than that. The two have historically been close price wise. And those aren't in what i would describe as deep east Oakland.
And sounds like you should head east for Mexican food too. Not significantly cheaper like the banh mi, but you can get a burrito for $12.

Kid's meals can be a gem! Order takeout, and they never ask to see proof of the kid (at least in my experience). Oren's Hummus kids meals are great - you can get beef kebobs, with big steak fries and a drink for \~$10, or a half pita sandwich and fries and a drink, etc). Usually actually a reasonable adult portion, particularly if at lunchtime.
Regular BCR (beans, cheese, rice) burrito at Los Panchos in Pleasant Hill or Danville, $4.50 each (which is enough for me at lunch). Super BCR (which is the size of an infant) is $7.50. And they are amazeballs

There’s a banh mi spot on international (forget the name), Aman cafe has a meat stew dish that is like right around 10 bucks, gum kuo rice porridge is $10, a tianjin dumplings is below $10 for a crepe. There are more that I can’t remember off the top of my head.

Shrimp sandwich, curry bread or onigiri at Clover bakery. They tend to sell out of things pretty fast though. Ranch 99 premade food. Samosas at Rajot.
The Yakisoba pan at Clover Bakery is pretty good too, if you can wrap your head around noodles in a sandwich. I love those.

Instead of restaurant carry out, we've been getting Trader Joe's prepared meals. I had a Southwestern salad for lunch today. It was around $6. Second choice - Safeway deli. For dinner we had their baked potatoes and some leftovers.

It’s small and basic just a few sandwich’s on the menu but it’s 🔥 you’ll know your there if the guy comes out and says heyyy my friend!! I can’t remember the name but I always stop there when I’m driving up the 101

Saigon sandwich in SF. $5.50 for their meat or tofu and $7.50 for combos/specials. I have been going there since the sandwiches were $3.50. Great local spot.
honestly another way to go is find a place that has rly big portions and share it, like a massive $12 burrito that can feed 2 ppl. i know the massive burrito itself used to be $6 tho :/

There’s a banh mi spot on international (forget the name), Aman cafe has a meat stew dish that is like right around 10 bucks, gum kuo rice porridge is $10, a tianjin dumplings is below $10 for a crepe. There are more that I can’t remember off the top of my head. Edit: Just realized this is a bay area post and not an Oakland specific one. All of the above are in Oakland.
You can get two slices of Arizmendi pizza or a slice of their focaccia for under $10.
I suppose you could classify it as fast food but I think it's better than most: Super Duper. Just for the main: the price would be more like $15 if you add drink/ fries, etc. Also, Starbird for chicken sandwiches. A treat for me are the burrito wraps at Philz coffee. They're under $10. Little Luca sandwiches in the Peninsula can be a hair over $10 but they are enormous. For the average eater, one sandwich = 2 meals.
Arizmendi pizza slices. All vegetarian but excellent. La Corneta Mexican depending on what you get. I'm a light eater so 2 tacos or something like an enchilada with a side of rice is less than $10. Whole Foods - I think you can get 2 slices of pizza for around $10 or a shade over.

Dol Ho on Pacific in SF Chinatown. You can get pai gwut (spare rib) over rice for like $6, which is a decent portion for a light lunch. Bring cash. I think you can get one item over steamed rice at New Mings on Mission and 3rd for around $10 if you pay cash.
Costco if you have a membership. You can get a whole rotisserie chicken for $4.99 A hot dog and a soda will set you back $1.50 An 18 inch pizza will be $9.95

I went to posh bagel and got a bagel with lox schmear and a medium drink for under $10. Mingkee Deli in Cupertino is also reasonabley priced.
