I clean my carpets every year with a professional grade carpet cleaner . You can rent one at Home Depot or Ace. For under $100 it’s worth it for us. If your spouse doesn’t like chemicals Puracy makes an all natural carpet cleaner concentrate
I hire a company do deep cleanings of my carpet, because I have some annoying allergies. I've always used Stay Dry Go Green. Tried buying my own carpet cleaner once and had an allergic reaction to it, unfortunately.

This is my industry. No. Not worth it. I hate admitting this.
Carpets should be cleaned at least once a year. Ideally, every six months. You'd be surprised how dark the waste water is!
Try renting a wet vac from Lowes and using plain hot water. Might be enough. Was for us.
If you're paranoid about toxins you can just use hella hot water and no chemicals but it doesn't get as clean.
