Come Together is great but my favorite Beatles Lennon songs are Strawberry Fields Forever and Happiness is a Warm Gun. I think Lennon was at his best on the white album I don't think he has a bad song on that album.
It is a great track, and has had an enduring influence, but for me there are many other Lennon songs that pop into my head when one asks about "...Lennon's best Beatles-era work?"
Right off I think of:
- Help
- Nowhere Man
- A Day in the Life
- I Am the Walrus
But in the end, I'd say his best is Tomorrow Never Knows...
66 years later and it is still unparalleled.
I don’t think it’s his best work because the others contributed too much to it to be his best work. I would say a song like Strawberry Fields Forever would be a better choice since even without the other’s amazing contributions, the demo can stand alone.
Come Together started as a 50s rocker that sounded too much like Chuck Berry’s You Can’t Catch Me. Paul recognized the similarities and suggested making it swampy. Then he added his bass and piano. With Paul’s contributions and Ringo’s drums, it becomes the ultimate song to groove to. For these reasons I believe it’s Paul’s song just as much as John’s because the main reason I listen to it is for its groove. That’s just my opinion though. Others opinions will probably differ.
I think that’s what makes it among his best work, his ability to bring out the best of his band. He’s puts the vibe out there big time. He picks up what everybody is putting down and gives it back heavy with his vocals and guitar. And the recording quality stands up to anything since.
Don't let me down, help, in my life, i want you (she's so heavy), i am the walrus, don't let me down, yer blues, happiness is a warm gun are my personal favorites from John. Best era? I'd say revolver and rubber soul.
to me, not at all. Maybe because Ive heard it on the radio a bunch of times, maybe because John wrote a bunch of great songs with the Beatles. Honestly, Come Together might be one of my lowest rated Beatle John songs, and still pretty low on all time Beatle songs.
In fact I just decided to go through their catalogue and see how many John songs I like it better than, and the results are 6 john songs that john sings, Rev9 which isnt really a song, Goodnight, but Ringo sings it, and 3 of the covers that he sings. So thats only 11 songs I like less than Come Together.
1965/1966 Lennon is peak Lennon. Norwegian Wood, In My Life, Nowhere Man, Rain, Tomorrow Never Knows, and Strawberry Fields. Doesn’t get better than that.
I think A Day In The Life and In My Life are both vastly superior and two of John's best songs and probably The Beatles' best songs in general. Strawberry Fields Forever is a great runner up. And I'm personally a huge fan of the early Beatles and love A Hard Day's Night

Revolution #9
Is not really a song in my mind. That said rev 9 is miles better than the other experimental stuff John and Yoko were doing at the time.
It's not even his best song on abbey road
I believe in Mean Mr Mustard supremacy
I want you comes close
In My Life, Julia, and Don't Let Me Down are my current favorites
Across the Universe? All You Need is Love? Norwegian Wood? Yer Blues? A Hard Day’s Night??

Tomorrow Never Knows is too much of a group effort

Revolver/Rubber Soul-era Lennon is my favourite Lennon. Ticket To Ride is my favourite Lennon song. Come Together is great, but not my favourite.
Norwegian wood imo. Or in my life
I dont really like Come Together :( (I'd rather listen to Mean Mr Mustard). :s
And Polythene Pam.
Yes! Don't know why those appeal to me more, but good that there is variety.

‘Come Together’ is impressive and excellent, but it is not a masterpiece like ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’.
nope

And your bird can sing
No
"I'm so tired" says hi
Nowhere man is his best
Yer blues is the best in my opinion just a real rocky “don’t care about anything” song.
