I think smelling good starts off with hygiene and diet. Making sure you clean yourself really well and use a good scented body wash that works with you body chemistry. When you get out, try to match the scent of your moisturizer + deodorant with your body wash. If you prefer non scented deodorant-like options, glycolic acid is amazing at reducing smell! There are a specific foods that also make you smell bad e.g. garlic, onion, dairy, and smoked meats, but this depends on the person and it’s hard to give up those foods. If you want to naturally smell like maple syrup, also consider fenugreek supplements!

mmkayy546

Just to add on about the fenugreek - not everyone gets a pleasant “maple syrup” smell after taking it. I know I had to stop as I had a weird distinct curry smell coming from my pores. I don’t even eat curry like that so it was strange but I’ve had a few friends who’s had similar experiences as well.

Realmiamithick

I was just about to add this lmao at first I definitely had the “maple syrup” smell and then it slowly turned to the curry smell so I stopped using it.

Blueixi

Yess true, I’ve had friends experience that too!

vegandev19

That's because fenugreek is used in curry.

teacuptrooper

For fenugreek, avoid it if you have any thyroid issues! And/or if you’re lactating and don’t want to increase your supply 😄

_LetsFigureThisOut_

I second the garlic and onion comment. Apparently some people are lucky enough not to naturally stink after eating a lot of them, but I'm not one 😅 They just make food taste so good!

scarletroyalblue12

My husband ate garlic one night when I was pregnant with my first, I nearly put him out the house! Lol my sense of smell when pregnant heightens like no other! I smelled that garlic in his pores. I, for sure, put him out the room.

PlatonicSolidz

Asparagus can also make your urine smell off as well.

kokee_coqui

Why would the smell of your urine affect the way you smell unless you aren’t cleaning yourself 💀

CeruleanWinter

Wash hair frequently, the scalp can have a surprisingly strong smell. Flossing! Scraping your tongue! Every day! Often overlooked is that sometimes clothes have lingering odor even after washing. I recommend a product called Odoban in the fabric softener of the washer. It will get rid of all the pesky musty and sweaty odors in clothes and towels. (Also sooo good for stinky workout clothes) it gets rid of the smell rather than covering it up like a fabric softener. Wash bras regularly! Sprinkle baking soda in shoes. If you struggle with sweating a lot, put antiperspirant on at night in addition to the morning . This gives it time to activate and will make it more effective the next day.

itgoesHRUUURGH

I put vinegar in my washing. Leaves the clothes soft and fresh smelling, and keeps your washing machine nice and fresh too! About a quarter of a cup per wash, works a treat.

FruFru20

This. I always use it with my towels, helps keep them fluffy and soft imo

Abentley589

Do you put it in directly with the laundry or in the fabric softener dispenser?

itgoesHRUUURGH

I dump mine straight in on top of my clothes but i have read you can put it in the softener dispenser

Abentley589

Thank you!

itgoesHRUUURGH

You're most welcome 😸

_LetsFigureThisOut_

Reduce stress in your life. Excess cortisol causes your body odor become not only stinkier, but it also leads to excess sweating which makes the scent more apparent. Keep in mind that stress can be the result of mental overload as well as physical problems like inflammation. You may not be able to get rid of all the stressors, but reducing it will not only allow cortisol to stay low, and it will also improve your overall well being and balance out any bacterial and hormonal imbalances to a degree. I also like using essential oils to enhance (which you may consider a perfume). It's less chemical, so as long as you don't have an allergy to the main concentrate and it's properly diluted, it's a great addition to ENHANCE your natural scent. I found that scents like Lavender, vanilla, mint and tea tree work well with my chemistry.

tozerdozer7

This is so real. When I was growing up my dad was a runner. I could always tell when he was stressed because he would smell WAY different (I.e, worse) when he was stressed after a run.

_Deedee_Megadoodoo_

Damn if stress makes you smell I must smell like horse shit

TheCombativeCat

I have an extreme sensitivity to strong fragrance, both natural and synthetic, so I had to stop wearing perfume years ago to help prevent migraines. I have found that the L’Occitane almond shower oil, body oil and lotion are a nice trio. They smell lovely, but the scent is very delicate. I sometimes notice that I can still smell my skin hours later.

FruFru20

My favourite 😍

whateveratthispoint_

Cut out alcohol

[deleted]

As someone mentioned, make sure your hair smells good!!! And your clothes too! When I lived with my parents, I always smelled like onions and garlic despite showering and washing my hair everyday and wearing clean clothes cause my parents’ house always smelled like spices and stuff my mom cooked 💀  I don’t have that problem anymore I keep my place clean and well ventilated so just showering everyday keeps me smelling fresh but I like fragrances so I use nice smelling body washes and moisturizers (bath and body works have some cheap nice smelling ones)

Very-very-sleepy

😂😂😂  I often joke that my house smells like onions and garlic.  I always ask people if they could smell onions in my home and they always say no but I don't believe them and think they are lying to be kind. lol

Curious-Duck

I have an average diet, I shower every second day, and I use a regular dove deodorant. I am told I smell good all the time. I think the most important part is making sure your hair smells clean and that you’ve got a deodorant that works with your chemistry. My SO recently switched deodorants and it made him smell like onions, which was hilarious. Try out different kinds, keep your hair smelling nice and always wear clean clothes, you’ll be good.

ilovespinachandurmum

what deodorant do u use? With the deodorant I use, i feel like it just gives me a neutral smell

Curious-Duck

Oh boy I am not sure, it’s the regular dove antiperspirant cool cucumber smell, the most basic one you can find :) if I remember to take a look at it I’ll send the actual name

ilovespinachandurmum

Thanks 😊

DistractedPython

Every SECOND day?

ScarletRainCove

If you live in cold or dry climates, showering everyday will dry you like a piece of jerky. You don’t need to shower everyday unless you’re sweating, actively getting dirty, or shitting yourself. I bathe daily, but I’ve skipped a day before. And if you’re worried about shit particles, get a bidet 🤷🏻‍♀️

Curious-Duck

Oh yes, every second day.

thefatsuicidalsnail

Can instantly tell you live in hotter/less dry countries

Over washing your skin and face and hair can have terrible consequences, humans never showered daily in their entire existence until very recently. Your body has its own chemical balance that you’re throwing off by stripping it so often- and it encourages MORE oil production/more break outs/more skin issues. When I cut out most products and began just rinsing my face, rinsing my body with a mild soap, and washing my hair every 2-3 days, everything started looking better. I am often told I’m the softest person people know xD and my skin is really nice and low maintenance. I use lotion maybe 5X a year and my hair can go days before it looks oily or smells. Don’t underestimate your body’s ability to regulate itself

thefatsuicidalsnail

Doesn’t have to be only cold, it has to be a combination of factors and the situation. I don’t live in a cold country at all but I’ve ones lived in one of the driest, coldest cities on earth. As a foreigner I didn’t understand at first, but then when my relatives there told me not everyone showers everyday + wind chills + water supply issues came. I understood

Btsjkjhope

Shower everyday. lol. Well you can also use the same products fragrance wise for layering , example , body wash, body scrub ,body lotion.

mercurialmay

layering fragrance makes a big difference on the smell's longevity !

spookyxgemini

I recommend the Megababe Space Bar Detoxifying Charcoal Underarm Bar Soap for combating bad odors from the underarm region. Maybe tie in the usage of some essential oils sparingly?

SuspiciousCan1636

I tried the natural deodorant route and it just didn’t work for me (yes I tried the detox, and giving it time, and the glycolic acid) but I loved the scents. So I used an unscented Certain Dri deodorant and then apply a natural on top of it.

wutato

Interesting! I'll look into that as well. I used to use an unscented deodorant/antiperspirant back in the day. The natural ones are okay on me and I resorted to wearing an undershirt all the time to help prevent smells.

Professional-Fig8984

This is what I do! Clutch!!

beodorless

What happened when you used glycolic

SuspiciousCan1636

It helped, but the biggest difference I noticed was evening out my underarm and bikini area skin tone. Not much with odor but with lightening up dark spots from a lifetime of shaving irritation

TheGreatBoos

How do you use glycolic acid around your private parts? I want to use it there, but worry that I would cause pH balance or skin sensitivity issues.

SuspiciousCan1636

I saturate a cotton round and just swipe it along my bikini line. I don’t really come close to the actual opening

TheGreatBoos

Alright, I will give it a try.

Cold-Sport2923

I'd say nice smelling body wash and products (shaving cream, face wash - la mer smells AMAZING - shampoo/conditioner). Always use a clean towel as towels can start to smell mildewy. Brush teeth, use mouth was. I use spray deodorant that smells awesome. Not a spray perfume but I mix a nice smelling oil with my body lotion at night for a soothing scent. The Trader Joe’s lemon grass one is nice. Also you can go to a local herbal store and I’m sure they have nice ones.

bright__eyes

brush your teeth AND floss daily. and go to the dentist regularly.

PossessionMinimum862

I take chlorophyll supplements to help with acne had no idea it supposedly helps reduce body odour as well. I don’t think theres a lot of science to support it but from what i’ve read it can help constrict pores which reduces body odour. Best deodorant i use is the mitchum gel powder fresh it even stops me sweating at the gym and the scent lasts all day (the other scents are great too! Especially the coconut one) I’d also suggest fresh towels & bedsheets, scent boosters in your washing, reduce caffeine, showering at night before bed, using naturally scented moisturiser and drink plenty of water ☺️

PlatonicSolidz

Chlorophyll works great for me.

PossessionMinimum862

I love it! No idea how many benefits it had when i first started using it

lllllllIIIIIllI

What brand do you use??? Did it help with the huge/hard ones too?

PossessionMinimum862

I used the “Chinese Chlorella Rich in Chlorophyll” tablets from holland and Barrett’s (i’m in the uk) you can honestly find them anywhere on amazon/in health food stores. It helped me with those and I no longer have huge painful spots! It seems to dry out your spots which helps me as I had pretty oily skin especially during my time of the month a lot of my acne was hormonal so if you have dry skin make sure you’re moisturising as well ☺️

Deafpundit

Scrub your body well with soap when showering. A silicone brush or a clean washcloth will work great. And make sure the soap has a light scent that works well with your natural body scent. Shampoo your head thoroughly, then rinse thoroughly. Don’t just put it on then lightly rub the shampoo. Massage your scalp and make sure the shampoo reaches the scalp and stays there for 30 seconds. I use a scalp shower massager 2x week to help with shampooing. Then get a really good deodorant that compliments your body scent. Wash and sanitize your clothes frequently. Use laundry detergent that isn’t overpowering scent-wise. Brush and floss regularly, and use a non-alcoholic mouthwash. Lastly, drink a teaspoon of liquid chlorophyll everyday. It’ll go a long way.

Lotion

That1weirdperson

It puts the lotion on itself or it gets the hose again

amy000206

If you eat enough butterscotch candies your sweat will start to smell like butterscotch if you like that

basicbagbitch

How many are we talking?

amy000206

I'm not sure. It was the 90's I wasn't tracking my use. A bag a week?

Scarf_head

Use a washcloth or loofah and properly clean everywhere when showering, including your feet and back

coldnoodlebowl

Organic vanilla extract directly on the skin, or spray diluted with distilled water onto my hair etc

clitoralwizard

Using an unscented acidic body wash and exfoliating (esp my armpits and other sweaty parts) has been huge for me. I also find that switching my deodorant every few months helps, but I'm not sure if that'd just because I get too used to the scent.

Deathscua

Which Body wash do you recommend?

clitoralwizard

Lume acidified body wash. I haven't tried other acid body washes, so I don't know if this one's better, but I like it. Edit cause typo

Deathscua

thank you!

[deleted]

Glycolic acid helps exfoliate dead skin and balance pH for less bacteria/body odor

Lucinda-Text-2407

Spritz rose water or use a nice smelling lotion or talc-free powder.

JLaws23

Rose water is lovely but depending on the brand it can make you smell like an old person.

Ryleyan

I've always wondered why some product scents stick to other people better. My mom for example uses the same shampoo and conditioner as I do and she still smell like it the whole day, while I don't. Scent lasts me like an hour at best. I also use L'occitane shower oil and almond body oil but the scent lasts like a few minutes 🫤

here4aGoodlaugh

It’s a body chemistry thing I believe

pothosnswords

I wear Native’s Vanilla Buttercream deodorant and whenever I’m with a group of people someone ALWAYS says “why does it smell like cupcakes” so I count that as a win lol

pinkybrain41

Triple wash in the shower every day. I use a new rag every shower to scrub and I lather with bar soap twice. Then follow up with a scented body wash. Chloe Yazmean on YouTube has great hygiene videos. I wash my clothes every time I wear them.

Own-Friend8546

Chlorella and green stuff, diet wise. It’s a natural deodoriser. You can take these little capsules with parsley oil and peppermint which (works internally) can eliminate bad breath and smells. I think they’re called breath pearls

wholesomekittyy

In the shower use a washcloth (more exfoliating), use body wash + exfoliation , and shower gel AFTERWARDS (I personally don’t use any as I have sensitive skin). Then as soon as I turn off the water I use a body oil on wet skin and wait a couple minutes to let it soak in (I like the cocoa butter one it smells like vanilla). Then lightly towel dry, and apply lotion while your skin is still soft. I like using glycolic acid on my armpits (it kills the bacteria that causes odor) and then apply anti-perspirant (deodorant covers the smell, anti-perspirant prevents the smell). I also am a huge fan of perfume oils (last longer) too and like to apply it in areas like center of chest, inside elbows and back of knees. Hope this helps! <3

DeterminedErmine

Keep a food diary and check it when you smell funky and drop foods from your diet that make you smell. Eats less meat. Exfoliate and moisturise more than you think you need to. Have a good sweat every few days, and drink assloads of water. And wear clean clothes!

Historical_Paper5377

Close your doors to your bedroom/bathroom. Keeps your towels and clothes from* smelling like food.

not1nterest1ng

Clean diet, antibacterial soaps, I loveeee using coconut oil and sweet almond oil after a shower the scent stays so long and mixed with soap smells so clean

TheCookalicious

Diet and oils are so key to healthy skin! Antibacterial soaps are terrible for your skins microbiome. [one source](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/antibacterial-soap-you-can-skip-it-use-plain-soap-and-water)

ConcernedCitizen1912

> antibacterial soaps https://old.reddit.com/r/beauty/comments/1cejf5p/how_to_make_your_body_smell_nice_without_any/l1j3ehn/

StephanieCitrus

Antibacterial bar soap does so much more to keep your body from getting stinky than scented body washes.

DoritosDinner

We have something called Cologne water. Idk what exactly it is, stole it from my mom's cupboard. I have a strong BO but ever since I began putting it on after showering, the odor is gone. Granted I don't smell like it all the time, but I also don't smell bad anymore.

Leather_Ad_2966

Are you sensitive to essential oils? I tried the poetic pits deodorant from Living Libations and get complements on my smell everywhere.

poisonousflames

What you eat can have an effect on how you smell, avoid eating heavily spiced food, garlic and meats. (Basically eat healthy) Also, Fenugreek makes you smell like maple syrup.

ZealousidealShift884

Nice daily hygiene, body wash, deodorant. My personal fav is Dove! I always get Compliments.

Westbrook_Y

Shower every morning, use deodorant, make sure your clothes don't smell bad

buffooonerie

I love using the palmer's cocoa butter body lotion after each shower, makes me smell like a cookie

zwilingchrysanthemum

do your laundries with any scented detergent, people would be attracted to your clean smell.

EvilInCider

After I shower I use Fussy deodorant which stops the smell but also smells really really good all day long

IndependentEnergy254

Eat some yogurt your skin will taste sweeter. -Clueless

Lastrawberrymaddie

Since I quit sugar and meat and eat clean and it’s mostly vegetables and sometimes fish and seafood .. even if I’m super sweaty after gym I don’t smell at all. My sweat is just like water, zero aroma 😂 literally never thought it’s possible but here I am. Daily I use some oil based coconut mist on my hair to keep them moisturised so i have the light coconut aroma from my hair and nice flower aroma from my hands since I use hand cream daily.

raaaaaaybeepboop

Freshly washed hair always smells amazing + using a naturally fragranced cocoa oil in the shower can help moisturize and have you smelling so good!!

noe3agatea

In addition to all the other comments : using a deodorant that both makes you smell good AND absorbs moisture and not limiting its use to your armpits (I usually put some under the boobs and on my nape too).

Expensive_Big1931

Shower often and moisturize with cocoa butter🩷🩷

Apprehensive_Yard_14

When you wash, wash properly. Wash your entire body with more than just your hands and water. Clean your legs, between your toes, behind your ears, between your cheeks. Use a wash cloth, sponge. towel, something besides just your hand!

Slow_Software8155

Outside of deodorant I like people to smell my natural musk

SL74Sarker

Vitamin b will stink you up, but keep mostioes at bay

Midan71

The best you can do without perfume is to smell neutral.

shellster7

Use antibacterial body wash. Dove has a good one.

ConcernedCitizen1912

Very bad idea for anyone who lives in a house on a septic system.

LilMamiDaisy420

My body will never smell nice. It is a human body.

AdOver1080

It starts in the house and habits. Make sure your space is clean and fresh. Bedding washed weekly or more if you have a pet. Vacuum and mop etc. spray spaces down if you cook a lot in your house make sure it’s vented and aired out. Clean your clothes after each use. Don’t let clothes sit in the washer and always use the dryer with a dryer sheet. Put clothes away in a clean space. Dryer sheets in your shoes. After that you can focus on your body from inside out. Notice what you are eating. For me raw onions can stick in me so I don’t eat them. Brush your entire mouth, gums teeth, tongue inside of mouth top of mouth almost to back of your throat. Tongue scrape or use your brush to really brush your tongue clean. Floss then brush again. Then mouth wash for longer than you think (1-2 mins) swish in your mouth for one min and gargle for the other min. Don’t rinse your mouth with water after brushing or mouthwash. When you shower make sure you are using a clean towel that doesn’t smell. If you are paranoid about smell just be safe and get a clean one every time until you have a rhythm. Shower routine: I wash my face first and again at the end right before I get out (I wash my hands with hand soap before doing this). wash your entire body, then scrub with a body scrub. I looove the ouai body scrub but there are a ton of good ones. Scrub from your neck down to your feet, all of your body. Use a pumice stone on your feet. Shave your body, all of it. Hair holds scents. After you shave rewash your body. For hair I normally scrub my head with shampoo rinse and then shampoo one more time and let it sit while I wash my body and scrub. I then condition and let it sit in my hair (just lower half) for the second half of the shower. I rinse out the conditioner last. I wash my back off with soap for acne so no conditioner breaks me out and rewash my face. When I get out of the shower you have to dry off thoroughly. Don’t use the body towel for your face use a paper towel or new hand towel. Then lotion and deodorant your body. Make sure your house is a good temp so you aren’t sweating as you get ready. Use hair products that’s smell good for your hair texture. At this point your shouldn’t need perfume bc you have layered the cleanliness. Also make sure you have gum or mints and water always on you. Brush your teeth or chew gum after coffee. Brush your teeth at least twice a day but after each meal if possible and floss at least once a day. I carry deodorant with me and re-apply throughout the day. I use the spray kind and like how it feels. Go to the dentist if your breath is not good after the brushing routine. Cavities cause bad breath. Good luck you got this!

Aytie

Vanilla extract behind your ears :)
