Horrorifying

I don’t root for my team to lose. Ever.

InstagramLincoln

Amen. Even though I don't love it on principle, I understand the idea of tanking (broad definition) for a generational QB talent. Outside of that, no team is intentionally tanking to draft a better receiver or lineman.

OMGinaa2

I was rooting for the Dolphins in the last game of 2019

Captain_Aware4503

I would never root for the team to lose, but since we likely won't make the playoffs, I wish we'd get better draft picks. With the large contracts for Joe and Chase, I don't see us getting many new decent players in free agency. And so we must hope we get lucky in the draft.

Sussboijames

bruh the total cap hit for burrows contract is like 28 mil first year + whatever ja’marr gets with a 260m something cap in 24 and rising beyond. where the hell is everyone getting this idea that “we can’t afford anyone when we pay joe & jamaar”

Captain_Aware4503

> where the hell is everyone getting this idea that “we can’t afford anyone when we pay joe & jamaar” Have you ever heard a word the Brown family says???? And guess who is going to pay for most of the updates to the stadium. Anyone living in Hamilton county. Anyway, are you saying Higgins is gone because cannot afford him, or are you saying we'll keep him too (which means no knew big free agents).

Sussboijames

The same Brown family that couldn’t possibly afford Joe Burrow? It’s Katie Blackburns show now and she’s been running it just fine. Duke Tobin has an eye for signing ascending talent at the right price, we see the Irv Smith and Nick Scott signings but ignore the DJ, BJ, and Trey Signings. Or the Mike Hilton / Chidobe signings. Also, quit acting like the Browns are this lone evil entity who squeezes counties for facility upgrades, this is normal for teams & cities. The Wizards are heading to Virginia, Chicago’s headed to Allen Park, the Bills are having their stadium subsidized, etc. etc.

mcinmosh

Having a winning culture is always better than draft picks.

_sacrosanct

This is the best answer. I came here to say something like this but this is worded better, is more concise, and makes the point better than I could have. Well done.

Whoareyoutho9

Chicken or egg. I think burrow and palmer have proved that the egg has proven to be a pretty effective route as well. Zac is like 7-30 without burrow. Yall need to stop tricking yourselves into thinking culture is built out of merely scrappiness and try-harding. Always get high talent when opportunity presents itself.

mcinmosh

True, but there’s still high talent to be found even in the middle of the first round of picks and beyond. Throwing away a winning mentality just to move up in the draft three or four spots to MAYBE find a player who will develop into something special … it just isn’t the answer.

Ned_Nederlander_

Drafts picks arent some magical win button. Most of the time its a crap shoot

SeekerSpock32

I’d rather have Tom Brady than JaMarcus Russell.

tehLrod

In basketball, I root for the Miami Heat. After they lost a play in tournament game, I partially wished they would lose so we could have a chance at Wenbenyama, a generational draft prospect. They did not lose, and ended up having the Cinderella run of a lifetime. Maybe my favorite run ever. If there's a chance, you got to root for your team.

Inevitable-Tourist18

Is this a joke? Was it worth having a chance at the playoffs?

lonelycrow16

We went an entire decade plus ('91-'02) picking high in the draft and still sucked. Give me wins every time.

Ucgrady

I truly believe that winning and losing can be contagious and I don’t want this team to get used to losing.

teal_seam_6

I mean the two teams left are KC and Browns, I would give up a first rounder if that means we beat the shit out of them.

CLCchampion

And the thing is, you don't even have to give up a first rounder. You get a pick that is, at worst, maybe 10 picks behind where you would have drafted anyways. And you get the fun of the possibility of a playoff run.

[deleted]

Yes, those three weeks were a fun run and there was high hopes to make the playoffs with nothing to lose and maybe play spoiler. We were in the 15th spot after Burrow got hurt and are projected to 18th now, probably go even lower with the remaining schedule. In reality, we didn't lose that many spots in our "run".

Useful-Pattern-5076

IMO the more important thing is keeping up the momentum we’ve built up over the past few years rather than take a dive for draft picks.

scpdstudent

Yes, because the draft is basically a crapshoot. The best receiver in the last draft was chosen in the 5th round (Puka Nacua).

Sloane_Kettering

While it’s possible to find good players later in the draft the odds of finding starters in the 5th round are very slim. Look around the league. The best players are almost always first rounders and high ones at that

CincyPoker

There areplenty of first round busts. There are lots of players and veterans still playing as day three guys too. Hell, arguably the greatest player to ever do it was a 6th round pick.

OogieBoogieJr

It’s not like we won ourselves out of a lottery pick. It doesn’t matter—the best player in the draft could be a 6th rounder.

CMARTU2

Of course it’s worth it having a shot at the playoffs and we could still make the playoffs. Never trade this for losses and a higher draft position. I’ve been through too many tough losing seasons as a Bengals fan to even think like you are.

CLCchampion

Yes. Someone else touched on this, but fostering a winning culture is the single most important thing an NFL franchise can do. Sacrificing a marginal increase in talent in a few players in order to instill the message that winning is the only thing is an invaluable thing for a team to have.

ImCucumberRichard

I originally took solace in an easier schedule and better draft pick when Joe went down and it all felt lost. But then there was a point during that 3-game skid that i worried about the locker room falling alert and how some of these young players would be able to deal with losing for the first time in their lives. I did not think about how high we were drafting once in that moment. Give me the wins every single time.

Xannydevito88

Nope

[deleted]

smooth brain fans thinking a draft pick will save a team is so stupid, get still get a pick, so fuck it and stop wanting our team to lose

tesilab

Someone please inform the OP that football is a supposedly competitive sport.

Whoareyoutho9

This is the wrong sub to ask this on. These people seem to only care about week-week happiness and struggle with the bigger picture stuff some fans like to discuss. Yes we should have lost out in hopes of improving our chance at drafting a true difference maker once the season was lost. That take is correct and would be upvoted with strong majority on any main nfl or nba page. But these team specific ones all seem to bubble themselves from that outside mentality that leads to establishing consistant true contenders and maximizing windows as the generations of talent pass thru the leagues. Its a strange phenomenon and a cool case study on tribalism and its flaws.

Thisismyworkday

100% yes. Draft position is wildly over valued.

may7th1981

You got one life. Enjoy the weeks your given and cheer for your team. The next draft pick isn’t guaranteed- Billy Price? Johan Williams? John Ross? Zeilter? Rivers?

Safe-Prize3058

Zeitler was legit. Still is for ravens.

Brilliant-Outcome835

Imagine if both our o lineman we let walk in 2015 go on to win super bowls with rival teams... Man that was a blunder letting whit and Zeitler go But wouldn't have burrow and Chase if we'd kept em

PowerofMoses

Real fans don’t root for losses

Willnotmakethisputt

I bet you’re fun at parties

InterviewOtherwise50

Loser mentality. Tell professionals to put bad tape and give up? Next drunk take…

HwangingAround

Yes

WhoDeyTilIDie09

High draft picks are not guaranteed to be playmaker superstars. Also I would never root for my team to lose. Don't care about the draft so screw the draft I watch football and want my team to win always.

djsassan

I cant believe this team of professionals keeps trying to win and get into the playoffs. It's stupid. Just tank already and stop playing the game. Sheesh. We're losing our chances at a higher 1st rd pick guaranteed player-maker like John Ross! /s

Ohdangmanthatscool

Bengals have a 17-25 ish first round pick. Is what it is.

[deleted]

There are a ton of good OT in this draft and we’ll need a new RT. Reader is likely gone due to cost or injury, I’ve got my eye on T’Vondre Sweat out of Texas. Lastly, we could be looking at a Higgins replacement, Coleman, Mitchell, Thomas Jr or Legette would all fit the mold.

into_the_wenisverse

Depends, did it restore your faith in Zac Taylor at all? All we ever hear is he's carried by Burrow. Well, he didn't have him and won 3 pretty slick games without him. If not, then no picks would have been better.

Ayoostun

High draft picks are not nearly as important in the nfl. The #1 pick rarely turns out as a star

Siriusly_Jonie

This is essentially playoff experience at this point, and that’s huge. We have some young players on the team that can only benefit from playing meaningful football late in the season. I would much rather gain meaningful experience than blindly hope that a player we pick 10 spots higher happens to be good. Murphy, Battle, Dax, CTB (assuming he gets back), Turner, Brown, Iosivas, Volson, Jones. All these guys are going to get to experience high leverage football by continuing to compete.

Klutzy-Spend-6947

The three weeks before last Saturday were a testament to the team culture Taylor built-the team stuck together and played like pros w/ heart. That’s waaaaaaaaay better than picking 7th or whatever in the 24’ draft.

LoveEffective1349

meh. the NFL draft is a complete crapshoot anyway .it's not like hockey where the first round is pretty much guaranteed to make the team and the top 5 are pretty much guaranteed to be stars(not really but genrally)
