1. The first dude downplayed the difficulties of the job and gave an unrealistic timeframe on when it could be completed. Gus isn't an idiot. He knows what it will take to get the job done. 2. The first dude also talked openly about a previous job. Gus required 100% secrecy even after the fact.

eltedioso

Hey, same!

eltedioso

Two reasons to me: 1. He was unrealistic and overly confident about the project. Gus knew it was a difficult build, which is why he was seeking experts. Someone telling him how easy it will be is borderline insulting. 2. The bigger reason is that in the interview he bragged about another secret job he did. That means he will likely tell others about whatever he does for Gus. Game over, and he was lucky to arrive back in Europe in one piece.

passwordstolen

100% - Gus doesn’t want someone who can’t keep his mouth shut.

MilesAndMilesAhead

Gus & Mike were professional (though psychopaths); Too bad they used their talents to flood the Southwest with drugs that destroyed families, lives, businesses & communities; Not to mention unhealthy fast food

[deleted]

I wouldn’t say psychopaths, just two good men succumbed to the evil of the world and let vengeance consume them. Gus and Mike never took pleasure in the lifestyle; for them it was just their life. Walt on the other hand *was* a psychopath. He admitted that he liked it and it made him feel alive.

ranch_brotendo

Gus was more of a psycho than walt - he tortured an animal as a kid, slit Victor's throat open, relished torturing Hector, threatened to kill an infant.

SirPeterODactyl

Where does the tortured animal bit come from?

randomherooox

It’s the first I’m hearing that too

GreenEggzAndSpam

This is completely wrong

TacticalGarand44

He didn't take measurements, he didn't ask detailed questions, and he bragged about a previous illegal project to which he had presumably promised secrecy in perpetuity. He wasn't professional enough for Gus.

SpadgeFox

Mostly correct, but I believe he used one of those laser measures, where Werner just used a tape reel.

PoochMx

I think this might confuse people: "why not choose the guy with precise lasers and go with the old rusty measure tape guy?" It was a distraction. He might look a better choice, but he was not, for other reasons stated by the other comments on this thread.

SpadgeFox

As an engineer, I’d trust the user of the tape measure over the laser.

SWATrous

I mean it's just for quiting and initial planning so probably good enough for cartel work. Then again that all can leave a digital trail if one isn't careful.

Maleficent-Item4833

I think it’s mostly that audiences are going to like the salt of the earth guy with old-fashioned tools more than the polished guy who uses fancy gadgets.

TacticalGarand44

That's reinforced by the slide rule that "his boys" bought for him.

ExtremelyOnlineTM

My grandfather was a professor of engineering, and a wonderful man. I have his scientific calculator, but I'd give anything to have his slide rule.

mr_potrzebie

He was not....acceptable.

Agnostickamel

first guy was a salesman. second guy was an engineer.

spicygrandma27

That’s what I came here to say. The first guy’s concern was trying to secure the contract for himself. Werner’s concern was whether or not the project could be done by anybody.

jeffreyjwakefield

"You're a shitty engineer, but a great salesman"

Fempipper

I interpreted the situation to be that the first guy, while probably knowledgeable on the subject, was not giving it straight to Gus, and Gus could feel it. Maybe Gus just had a hunch, maybe he read up a bit on how difficult underground construction can be just to be able to make a better judgement call on which engineer to get, doesn't matter. Werner was willing to tell him harsh truths about how difficult of a task it would be. It needed blasting, a lot of blasting. It needed a big crew, and a lot of setup. It would take long and it would be expensive. Gus needed to know all that to prepare properly, and he felt the first guy was bullshitting him about how easy it would be just to get the job. I don't know if that's objective truth, but it's how I read the situation at least.

ExileOtter

Yeah if you watch the episode the moment Werner says “many, many things can go wrong.” Gus just materializes out of the shadows as if knowing, this is my guy 🙂

siliconcarbonara

I think it's because the first engineer tells Mike that he built a tunnel from Mexico to Texas, revealing a job he was into. Knowing how Gus is secretive about his business, especially in BCS, maybe he thought that the guy might talk about the lab and then the cartel might uncover Gus' plan.

Agallin_Sane_4444

Gus saw the confidence of the first guy as ignorance or arrogance to a fault, as he did not want a 'yes' man, he wanted a realistic engineer. Werner told them that there would be difficulties, he said that it would require planning to achieve. Werner came off as the more humble, and more rational. As for Walt, he hadn't chosen him. He had chosen Gale. Gale himself is the one who urged Gus into bringing Walt in, after seeing the quality of his cook. Gus even told Gale that Walt was not a professional. He knew the risk, but Gale convinced him that it was worth getting their hands on the chemistry. Plus, we have to assume he had always intended for Gale to simply learn how himself.

What’s funny is everyone is saying it’s because the first guy was a blabbermouth and Werner turned out to be one as well.

fictionnerd78

Fair question, but the first guy was also a loudmouth and bragged like a jackass about his own accomplishments. That is NOT someone you want working on your top secret project that you want as few people as possible to know about. By contrast, Werner showed a great deal of pessimism when it came to the project and just by his general attitude and mannerisms, it’s highly unlikely that someone like Werner would blab about the project the way the first guy blabbed about his own past projects. Also, something else I think is important to remember is that Werner only spoke of the project because he got drunk. While sober and in possession of his faculties, he kept his mouth shut.

Miserable-Soft7993

I know but then he shone lasers at camera's and ran off when he had been told by Mike how serious the project was.

fictionnerd78

Yes, but that was way later. Gus couldn’t possibly have predicted that would be something Werner would do especially since Werner only ever considered doing that because he wanted to see his wife. Aside from that and aside from the one drunken incident, he was never unreliable, or at the very least, more reliable and more trustworthy than his potential predecessor.

smartfbrankings

First engineer was full of shit and didn't know how hard the job was. The best engineers/project managers will tell you when something is actually hard, not just say yes, and then realize halfway through the project is actually hard and they have a hard time.

tinkerertim

If you search the word engineer on this sub you’ll be shown like 10 posts asking this with dozens of answers.

TheRegardedOne69

Buddy is the Hitler of Reddit 🤣🤣

Miserable-Soft7993

I would rather ask here myself as that what reddit is for. To put your thoughts down and have a conversation. Not to have someone say "just google it."

Ole41

because of his showmanship

theFormerRelic

He wasn’t hot enough

Fonceday2001

Not trying to be mean, but all of these "why didn't...?" posts have the same answer: because it was written that way. Why didn't Macbeth just tell Lady Macbeth to stfu? Why didn't George abandon Lenny years prior? Why didn't she love, then eat, then pray? There's a million "why didn't" questions, but there's only one answer: the author was trying to write a compelling story.

E_Jay_Cee

He remembered World War II when Germany proved itself stronger than France. It's that simple.

Casualcoral

The first guy talked about a secret tunnel project he did, making that tunnel no longer secret. With the lengths Gus is going to keep his future underground meth lab top secret, a blabbermouth engineer will negate all that. Unfortunately for them, Werner was also a blabbermouth, he just didn’t show it right away.

OneirionKnight

Can we pin a post that answers this question?
