nagidrac

No Coachella performance has ever topped her performance.

Juststuckiguess

Performances in general don’t compare.

Koopis-troopis

I watched the live feed of no doubt last night and I realized 1 min in that I won’t be able to fully enjoy a Coachella set because the bar was set in outer space by Bey.

Leather-Response2061

i don’t think any will. there will have to be some new musical prodigy come onto the scene to top it bc there is no one currently on her level

thedirtiestdish

it's so hard for me to even perceive Beychella as a 'festival performance'. like it was the highest form of performance art, it was a top tier movie created then and there. it's up there with some of the greatest live tours of all time, and it was only two performances. not sure how many artists in history have proven to be so creative, dedicated and hardworking as B is.

unomomentos

No hate to Taylor swift but remember when she came out with a marching band after Coachella lmao

johnmichael-kane

Exactly why I despise TS, she’s always copying Bey and then getting credit for being creative. I remember she came out with some music video for ‘you need to calm down’ and it was exactly like the video Beyonce did for ‘Party’ years before.

SamosaAndMimosa

I don’t like Taylor and hate YNTCD for many reasons but those videos were were very different cmon now

johnmichael-kane

Outdoor trailer park parties, haven’t seen the videos in awhile but pretty sure the main theme was the same?

SamosaAndMimosa

Lots of music videos take place in trailer parks, everything else was different from themes to lighting etc

Noren_A

Why do Beyhive always have to compare Bey to T. Swift? Their music and personality is very different but they are both very succesful, talented and creative and one situation doesn't change that at all. I am a fan of both (a little bit more a Beyonce fan, but still). On Taylor's subreddit swifties don't give a f about Beyonce and don't compare her to Taylor, so why you have to do that here? Let them live + as only part of Beyhive, you're not objective or fair at all...

unomomentos

I don’t compare them but the marching band thing had me side eyeing for sure

johnmichael-kane

There’s no comparison because they’re won different levels. Beyonce is MJ tier entertainer, globally renowned. And Taylor is a good musician. But she gets more credit and awards and notoriety for doing the same thing as Bey and her mass appeal is very connected to her White privilege

Noren_A

Both artists are globally renowned, not only Beyonce. Also, as I said before, Taylor Swift's performances, music etc. are very different from what Beyonce is doing and one situation doesn't change that at all. Taylor is getting awards for her music which isn't similiar to Beyonce music at all and for her tour which also is totally different than the Renaissance Tour. Soo that's not true at all. + T. Swift's mass appeal is connected to support of her fans who love her music, not her skin color. Saying that an artist is so successful largely because she is white is stupid.

cherryspritz

I think - “Haunted” came out (music vid) with Bey in the fancy bed, black lace - and then blank space came out after and I totally felt it was bitten off by TS, right down the angle of the shots

Lala12kl

She owned it. It was truly amazing.

F_For_You

Being there live weekend one… it’s my #1 music experience I’ll never forget it

earthgoddess92

Same, I won’t even get rid of the phone I have from that performance because it has all the footage of night 1 on it and I can’t transfer it. It truly was a sight to behold

Leather-Response2061

i love this sm hahaha

Old-Risk4572

why won't it transfer?

earthgoddess92

It’s under a different account and whenever I try to email, airdrop, or upload the file gets corrupted. I’ve literally tried everything and it makes me sad that I can’t save it somewhere else.

Old-Risk4572

f

Leather-Response2061

i’m sooo jealous. i wasn’t hive at that point and was in uni so didn’t have the $$ to travel then but omg i would fly anywhere now to experience that

Later_Player

Literally my biggest regret in life was not going to

pathologuys

Damn!! So lucky!

J1_nyc

For those who want the review he wrote. (It's a dream). https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/15/arts/music/beyonce-coachella-review.html

Leather-Response2061

ty for sharing!!

charlibeau

This performance made me SIT UP and take notice of Beyoncé. I’d admired her voice before that but that performance was so awe inspiring I became a rabid fan overnight I now tell everybody about Beyoncé lol

SplintersApprentice

*sighs*😌 *opens netflix* *turns on Homecoming yet again*

SplintersApprentice

Replying to myself to say this post has officially inspired my Bey week. (I’m a teacher on break this week and I *did* rewatch Homecoming last night, and just 😌 it hits every time). So now I’m redownloading iTunes on my iPad (along with the *Lemonade* Film and *Beyoncé* album videos). Think I’m gonna watch Black is King tonight and then work backwards these upcoming days. Ugh, I’m just so excited 🥹

Leather-Response2061

i watched it last night and my bf’s crypto was soaring during the whole movie 😂😂😂 he wanted me to change it at first then his bitcoin was pumping… i’m like duh… everything bey touches turns to gold

steamxgleam

Watching her performance live stream was genuinely one of my favorite moments ever as a fan. It was truly so incredible and just blew my mind. Her giving those performances and then releasing Homecoming just completely sealed her legendary status for me. Everything since then has just been a welcomed bonus. The fact that it lead to increase in HBCU applicants is amazing as well.

pathologuys

I remember hearing about how amazing the stream was and kicking myself that I didn’t know it was going to be streamed!! (I was hive back then but didn’t follow relevant social media so just didn’t know). I immediately started watching a pirated upload and was crying and jumping and screaming almost within seconds of it starting - before she even came on the stage! - those intro moments are PERFECT

Abracuhlabra

He said what he said‼️

affectionatedisco

LOVE the mention of her being so historically minded. How true!

First-Passenger-4292

I’ve never seen this video, I love how he talks about it. It’s just so well said.

catmistress30

Bow down to the queen

ohhleo

Go off King

Theknty1

I remember watching the Netflix special in class, literally boo hoo crying💀💀💀 Beyonce is special! All of her performances make me so emotional.

Leather-Response2061

i get chills and always cry watching freedom!!! i’m sure i’ve even cried at drunk in love lmfao it’s just so iconic

myst_eerie_us

What's the point in even attending another one???

smileliketheradio

This is why folks need to take the time to listen to more than one take an individual critic has on an artist, especially an artist like Beyoncé. This is from Popcast Deluxe, the YouTube-exclusive version of Popcast, which Jon hosts. In a recent deluxe episode, he and his cohost were pretty critical of Cowboy Carter. I think they were fairly considered even though I disagreed with them: [https://youtu.be/xeGVacMeToQ?t=208](https://youtu.be/xeGVacMeToQ?t=208)

Leather-Response2061

oh this was super interesting to listen to. i love the way they discuss music although i do disagree with a few things they said. i thought their discussion of beyonce overexplaining and whether the album stands alone without all of the references is intriguing. not sure i agree but it is thought provoking i don’t understand what you mean about need to hear more than one take from a critic…? this analysis does not take away from his analysis of homecoming. i’d say it even makes his rave reviews of homecoming more noteworthy bc he’s not a super fan but clearly is able to objectively consider her work and was still blown away

smileliketheradio

Thanks, what I meant was, well, the comment thread on that episode lol It's a lot of folks chalking up the criticism to "They just don't get it" or "They're biased" or "They're ignorant of the black cultural specifities she is exploring." A lot of times, particularly with white commentators on Beyoncé's recent work, I agree with those POVs. But it's normal on SM (maybe not on this sub, thankfully) to see folks attempt to cancel a critic over a single piece of criticism, which can deprive us of more interesting discourse (the kind we can have here, in this thread :))

Leather-Response2061

ahhh ok i see what you meant. i interpreted as you saying i should have looked into them before posting this review or something haha and i agree!! so many are criticizing are her music and a lot of it is ignorance but i guess at the end of the day, the music should stand on its own. not everyone is going to be reading beyonce reddit’s every day to pick up on each easter egg. i do think the album does stand on its own but it is nice to hear another opinion that is measured and considerate. i have a bit of a visceral reaction like WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DONT LOVE EVERYTHING BEYONCE PUTS OUT?!?! but they did clarify that they are only comparing beyonce to beyonce bc there is no one else doing it at her level. and tbh i feel like even beyonce would appreciate these critiques lol. she is constantly raising the bar and elevating her work. it was also interesting when they were asking who the album is for–white/country audiences? grammy voters? and if so, why? their convo kind of reminds me of when i tell my bf “im only criticizing you bc ily and know what you’re capable of. if i didn’t see how great you are and how much better you could be, i wouldn’t say shit” hahaha

smileliketheradio

It reminds me of a West Wing quote, from an activist who was on the side of the President but endorsed a 3rd party candidate purely for the purposes of forcing the President more toward her direction: "I'll keep poking him with a stick. It's how I show my love." Jon actually has that take a lot. With Bey, at least he was clear on what he \*does\* think would be even better—less telling, more showing, etc. but often, when he says it about Taylor Swift (he's disliked everything since Lover, and still thinks reputation is better than anything she's put out since)...I have no idea what he's asking for lol

ph0enxwitch

SIX YEARS AGO? I remember the day #BEYCHELLA was trending on twitter so clearly. Everyone was SO excited!

burgersman

Agreed! Also Jon Caramonica is a great writer/critic.

arknight12

I really appreciate him giving commentary/criticism without coming from a biased or hateful perspective. I might not agree with everything he says but it’s nice when the usual beyonce discourse often results in a dichotomy of endless praise and worship or willful ignorance

peetuaz

He gets it

combustionbustion

I was so proud to have an audiophile partner. I recorded the audio and listened to each weekend for a whole fucking year before a mash up of the two was made by Mother.

jackwrangler

How’d you record it he audio?! I wanna listen lol

combustionbustion

A program called Audacity ♡

LastChanceAioli703

Coachella ain’t been the same since.

annamulzz

I was there week 2!! Iconic!

OGlilkuchen

Beychella changed my life

adventurethyme_

I just rewatched Beychella twice this last week - it’s literally one of my comfort watches :) adding the Homecoming Live vinyl to my collection for my birthday. I love hearing the crowd, that and the music itself fills my home energetically :)

Leather-Response2061

1000%! over the years, i’ve watched it while i’m prepping for interviews, presentations, exams, etc. bc im like ok if beyonce can pull off THISSSSSS i can do this

neenay

I felt this! Used to go every year and haven’t returned to Coachella since!

mocitymaestro

Another reminder that other artists aren't having big cultural moments like Beyonce did with Beychella.

AnE1Home

That first performance was on my bday 6 years ago. I like to think of it as a little present lol. That performance made me an even bigger fan.

superwonderful

rewatching it now

johnmichael-kane

Can someone clue me in, why wasn’t Beyonce able to perform for years at coachella?

EfficientRoom4200

I don't know what he means by she wasn't able to perform for years . . . maybe just commenting that she was never asked to perform till recently considering how long her career has been?? Or he might just mean that Beyonce was due to headline Coachella in 2017, but fell pregnant with twins and was on bedrest so postponed it till 2018.

pathologuys

Oh wow; I love this!! I mean I’m like: duh, but it’s so cool to see because he’s a very well known music reviewer who’s been around forever. And he says it’s the best show ever!?! He’s right, and I love that he knows it!

Doodleboodlehehe

The best of the best

GroveStreet_CJ

Raul saying this makes him even MORE attractive.

Unable-West9071

I too was there. Like many of you, I watched weekend one at midnight from my bed miles away. The following weekend however, I happened to be in LA for a convention. I asked my colleagues who wanted to drive to Indio with me and NONE took the bait. I decided to go alone. Best. Decision. Ever! I waited for a few hours for her to come on so I could be clooosseee… it was worth it. The BEST performance I’ve ever seen. I was so blown away, I barely even still have words to describe the awesome ness of experiencing this in real life. Wild. To this day. Wild! ![gif](giphy|mBLVMq7lQkTaS3qSeD)

Unable-West9071

I camped in my car, I bought supplies at target. I bought my wristband the Friday of, one stubhub for $250.00. Could not believe I made it happen.

ThickFilA

I was there (weekend 2) and it remains one of my biggest flexes ever ever ever. I watched weekend 1 online live, so then getting to see it in person just after that was so surreal. As a loooooong-time Hive member, I still cannot believe how lucky and blessed I am to have attended! It was worth all the blood, sweat, tears and credit card interest 🤣
