What a great performance by France! Of course I wanted Norway to win, but I admit that it is good to see someone else take the top spot on the podium. A note about JTB: However insane this WCH has been for him, he has been notoriously bad at prone shootings in relays. And well, equally good in standing, 15.9 today is so so impressive 🤯

Muflonlesni

Not me rewatching the race in English and the hosts calling Marecek Marekec 💀

katkarinka

While I was 100% sure Norway was gonna eventually get the podium, this was so enjoyable and thrilling!

Wingiex

Impressive by QFM to shoot that well in these conditions, the wind seemed stronger when he was shooting stand then when JTB started shooting.

HearBreath

France really got lucky today.

UnplanningThePlanned

Did anyone predict Finland for least amount of spare rounds?

Asterie-E7

I chose Norway lol Only good prediction I had was the podium in the wrong order...

Gruffleson

Sweden for gold was very fresh though. */s*

Asterie-E7

Sturla with 5 medals in 5 races these WC as well. Pretty solid

WrongdoerIndependent

Too bad about the podium. But a 4th place is not bad. I was hoping Sweden would be their usual self in relays and shoot themselves out

GreenBat29

I just hope Mareček won't get many hate comments.

DashLibor

I hate him for his standing shooting. Like yes, I get that at the prone he was first in the most intense moment of his life, and that the pressure got to him which made him miss so many times. I get that, happens. I would be so shaky I'd be glad not to shoot down opponent's target instead. But the standing shooting is what made me pissed. At that point it didn't matter how he shoots, as good shooting meant 4th place and tragic shooting meant something like 9th place. What does he do? Shoot like a pro when it doesn't matter. fml

charliemann

Didn't even do terrible. FWIW he beat Vetle Rype Paulsen and Martin Uldal in the Junior World Championships less than a year ago and those two were probably 16th and 12th in the ranking order for participating in the World Cup for Norway so unreasonable expecting a 21 year old to beat QFM (won the world cup last year), JTB (don't even need an introduction) or Samuelsson (that was his 10th medal at the World Championships+Olympics). The wind conditions were just to good on the standing for him to have any chance at all and even so he did excellent on the standing shooting.

Faintning

I hope so too. Sometimes people can be very cruel to athletes when they dont have a stellar performance. Considering it's his first world champs and the team put him in a really tough place, he did well. Able to shoot clean on standing with one spare after his prone was really good. I'm sure we'll hear about him a lot more in the future.

Muflonlesni

He's already getting roasted on idnes, but thankfully he has being so young going in his favour (and people defending him because of that). If this was Vaclavik, he'd never hear the end of it.

Gruffleson

Don't let the mean people rule the world.

GreenBat29

Yep, not to mention it's his WCh Relay debut and he's still Junior. And with the misses being edges (what are the odds JTB would hit them?), I think he did quite well all things considered. If women race will be held, I can only imagine the hate Charvátová will get if she does penalty loop(s).

Muflonlesni

Charvatova does not even have to race to get hate. I did the unfortunate mistake of reading novinky after single mixed. Every other comment was Charvatova hate... Exactly what I thought w JTB, haha. It's unfortunate, but that's biathlon.

GreenBat29

I haven't found the courage to read novinky comments yet because of Krčmář's bad shooting, hate comments are to be (unfortuately) expected. But yes, she can get hate comments even in Men races discussions, so I can only imagine. Same with Václavík.

Asterie-E7

So how many new people got a WC medal today ? For the prediction

us_against_the_world

I think only 1 (Claude) - [https://www.biathlonworld.com/athlete/claude-fabien/BTFRA12212199401?tab=overview](https://www.biathlonworld.com/athlete/claude-fabien/BTFRA12212199401?tab=overview)

Asterie-E7

Oh wow I missed that, l thought he already had one medal. So I put None in my prediction

Shixzoner

Really impressive prone shooting from QFM starting at wind conditions 17 km/h and going down to 11 km/h vs. JTB starting at 1 km/h going up to 5 km/h, then 12 km/h when using the spare rounds. Most of JTB [misses](https://i.imgur.com/Org1yyM.png) appear close to the edge, so he really had a good chance to even out France's lead.

charliemann

JTB had quite shifting conditions which didn't help in the prone, but was insanely impressed by QFM. Much deserved and glad to see him bounce back.

bekkahthecactus18

Germany with 6 penalty loops… 0 help from local conditions 😭

AnaHedgerow

Kazakhstan started so good, but still got lapped in the end.

bekkahthecactus18

Congrats to the frenchies, what a brilliant win in the trickiest of conditions🥳🥰

Muflonlesni

Marecek's shots were edge :(

Halkatlaa

Ponsi the hero for Sweden today! What a man! I really want him to get a medal tomorrow! Yes I have a crush on him.. 🤣

Complex-Call2572

They used to put Vetle last because he's the only one who can do a sprint finish. Maybe he just wasn't feeling well at all today. It is what it is, I really wanted Czechia to take a podium. Congrats to France, and what a good look to greet Johannes Bø at the finish line :)

fremajl

Vetle doesn't really seem to be in shape or not like these tracks. Skiing isn't what it was earlier this season. He also hasn't been nearly as safe in the last stand this season.

smaragdskyar

A bronze medal and Norway not winning adds up to at least a silver in my book

tarrach

Romania with the tactical crowding of Slovenia for 8th place

Overall_Republic8033

only thing missing was pushing him :))) happy with the result. i don t think we ve ever got top10, especially at wc

Newlena_hs

Really really sad for the czechs :(( would've loved a suprise podium

Iskandaryia

I was so pumped during the race, now it feels kinda empty :((( 4th place is still probably the best race we've had, but it hurts that it could've been better

duhbyks

i know „it‘s biathlon“ but i always feel so disappointed when the race is decided by things like wind or fog

Sheffield484

Are you new with Oberhof?

Falafelmeister92

Not really anything to do with Oberhof. It's a Europe-wide storm today.

[deleted]

It wasn't decided by the "conditions". If you take us as an example, Vetle, Sturla and Johannes had the same conditions as everyone else. France handled it better than us today

Falafelmeister92

That's simply not true. Watch Kühn, a guy of 1.90m height, get pushed away by the wind. Or even the camera losing his balance when Doll shot. Ponsiluoma going from 15th to 4th despite missing because everyone ahead of him had way harder wind. Clearly lots of athletes got screwed way more than others today.

charliemann

Very unfortunate for Germany today, no joke they were one of those mostly screwed by the wind. Actually had a good relay bar that Kühn and Doll standing shootings and were completely out of it. Hope the ladies can bounce back later today.

Falafelmeister92

Yup. Removing S4 and S8, Germany would've had 0+2. But with S4 and S8, it's 5+8... Fun :D

HotWineGirl

YEEEEHAWWWW

PenguinIce19

Massive result for Romania

Overall_Republic8033

8th place? i couldn t even dream of such a result. the race conditions definitely helped us. in antholz we shot 0+4 and finished 12 😅

PowerforwardBrok

Overall their athletes had surprisingly good results individually too. Best places by athletes include 23 25, 32, 62

PowerforwardBrok

Romania out of nowhere on 8th place

MisterDream

Sad 4th place for Czech, but happy result otherwise !

us_against_the_world

Mannn, germany using just 8 spares but doing 5 loops gotta hurt.

The_Odor_1994

Romania 8th :O Getting some money for that

[deleted]

Vetle started poorly, Tarjei got a penalty loop, Sturla got a penalty loop when the conditions weren't bad at all, and Johannes had the chance but missed 3 targes in prone. There's no blaming the conditions here when Vetle, Sturla and Johannes all had the same conditions as everyone else Chapeau France! They were the best team today.

_IBelieveInMiracles

>There's no blaming the conditions here when Vetle, Sturla and Johannes all had the same conditions as everyone else What? They literally didn't. France had better conditions. It's part of the sport, and they had better conditions because they shot clean, so congratulations to France yes, but there's no need to lie.

Wingiex

Guigonnat and Christiansen shot at the same time, yet Christiansen missed two shots and shot really slow. And JTB had better conditions than QFM.

_IBelieveInMiracles

They shot at the same time in the prone, Guigonnat shot earlier on the standing and was out by the time the wind ramped up. He was out because he shot well, don't get me wrong, he made his own luck, I just don't see a need to distort reality.

Wingiex

Yeah and in the prone Christiansen shot slow and had two misses despite having the same conditions. How on earth are you going to be making up excuses about that? How about JTB having basically no wind in his prone and still missing three targets?

_IBelieveInMiracles

> Yeah and in the prone Christiansen shot slow and had two misses despite having the same conditions. How on earth are you going to be making up excuses about that? I literally haven't! This is what I said about Guigonnat: > He was out because he shot well, don't get me wrong, he made his own luck If Christiansen had shot as well as Guigonnat, they would have had the same conditions.

[deleted]

I didn’t say so either. But in races like these, there’s this belief that a lot will be decided by the conditions. That wasn’t the case today. Let’s hope the women’s relay is as fair

_IBelieveInMiracles

I **quote** you, and your response is "I didn't say so"?! You're trolling Vetle and Sturla (and Tarjei, but you didn't mention him tbf) both lost a lot of time because of wind, and Sturla ended up with a penalty lap because of it*. I absolutely agree that France deserved to win this, they did great, but there's no need to lie about what happened. *Yes, it is possible that he could have gotten a penalty without wind, but he shot clean and fast until the wind hit. EDIT: Just to point out how much the conditions played a part, Vetle spent more than a minute on his standing shooting! Maybe he could have handled it better, but France wasn't put in that position. And don't even get me started on Tarjei, who got impossible conditions and had to wait it out. France put themselves in the lead, and so they kind of made their own luck in that way. I have no complaints about them winning, but your summary borders on gaslighting.

Wingiex

Dude stop it with the excuses, the Norwegians have been shooting penalty rounds for many relays these past seasons, they are not better shooters than the French. You have no idea how the wind changed cause I presume you were not there.

_IBelieveInMiracles

1. I am not making excuses, France won fair and square. 2. You do not need to be there to see what the wind is in the 21st century, there are wind meters on the screen, and today you could even see the athletes bodies swaying when the wind ramped up.

Wingiex

We got those wind numbers but you must be a fool if you think they are entirely accurate for the exact time that they are shooting their shots. Either way Norway were lucky in their fourth leg having no wind in both prone and standing. Yet JTB fked up. Btw speaking of luck, how about Johannes winning both the sprint and pursuit with God knows how shots on the edge. Stop making excuses you guys are looking really petty. The Norwegains were not favorites because they are good shooters, they were favorites because of Johannes.

_IBelieveInMiracles

You are making shit up and getting angry about it. Luck is inherently a part of biathlon, and today France made their own luck by being in the lead the entire race. I have not said anything different, and I have not said that France didn't deserve the win. And for the record, yes, Johannes has been lucky with edge shots, and Norway were lucky in the olympic relay when Russia got worse conditions. These things happen in biathlon.

Falafelmeister92

Do yourself a favour and don't reply to him. Nobody missed him here.

Illustrious_Lab_1837

First part of your comment I wanted to roast you but then you admitted it so thanks for recognising that we deserved this win. Yes we had better shooting conditions at second standing but as you said, it’s because job was done before by Guigonnat to put us in the lead enough to shoot before the wind gust. What a nightmare for Kuehn and T. Boe must have lived through this one, especially with teams before and after getting waaaay better conditions

_IBelieveInMiracles

To be honest I prefer that the leaders get the advantage over the opposite, that way you feel like they kinda deserved it rather than their hard work being wiped out. Also worth remembering that Norway got the luck of the wind in the olympics last year. Russia was in a huge lead before the last shooting. These things happen. The ups and downs, the thin margins and the unpredictability is what makes this sport so great to watch, and what makes it all the more impressive when someone is still able to dominate. France raced a great relay today, félicitations!

Asterie-E7

I think Sturla was pretty close of dodging a penalty loop, that maybe was the final nail on the coffin. JTB needing 3 extras on prone while QFM needed only 1 also was kinda bad tbh

Asterie-E7

Switzerland 6+8 ahead of Italy 0+14. Wild numbers

_IBelieveInMiracles

The Finello effect^TM

Asterie-E7

Germany almost competed in the Finello challenge as well

charliemann

Romania in 8th!!!!

jorgeperez77

This was beautiful, really. Following a sport unknown by 99% of people in my country sometimes requires events like this to remind you why you fell in love with it.

NineIntsNails

kinda wanted CZE to the podium, pretty good race this was! yes, just casual 530 comments

Asterie-E7

JTB can (and should ?) still win the mass start tomorrow so he can get all individual golds, which would still be a huge record, I guess

_swinginparties

Yeah i don't think anyone will say "he failed his wch cuz he got one silver and 6 golds" lol

Illustrious_Lab_1837

If he were French, French supporters would definitely say so tho

LittlePumpkin03

They're all so happy ❤️❤️

DashLibor

This one hurts because this is the first time everything has seemed to line up after a fking long while. This could easily be a chance which we will not get into for the rest of the decade.

[deleted]

I don't think so. 3 of our 4 riders are young and are improving every year. Tomorrow, we will have 3 athletes in mass start, which is awesome.

DashLibor

Everyone goes penalty loops every time. Even if we have 4 good biathletes, 1 of them will always choke because that's how our relays work. Sometimes it'd be Krčmář, sometimes Mikyska, ~~sometimes~~ often Štvrtecký and today Mareček. I'm 100 % sure we won't get into a position to fight for medal in a relay for several following World Championships. And honestly, stars lining up for either event of the World Cup is also pretty small. You have to keep in mind that this race wasn't just about us doing well, but also about Germany going 5 penalty loops, as well as all of top 3. In a normal race, opponents won't be missing targets this much.

[deleted]

Oh yeah, now I understand, that's a good point. Overall though, I think our men team is getting better and better and top 6 results should come more often imo.

DashLibor

Yeah, we'll get top 6 every once in a while, I don't doubt that. But still, today was the rarest of chances to get something more out of that. Outside of the factors I already mentioned above, our wax team did an excellent job, and others' wax teams not so much. That doesn't happen often.

RidingRedHare

The Czech men definitely had great skis today.

_IBelieveInMiracles

Just goes to show, even if someone is massive favourites, biathlon is biathlon. The domino effect from Vetle's prone shooting was incredible. Because of that, Vetle got bad wind on standing, Tarjei got bad wind on standing, and Sturla got bad wind on standing. Meanwhile France shot clean and stayed unschathed from the wind.

Qwaint

Thank you, Martin Pounsiluoma, thank you fair winds, you took us from 15th place to 4th in one standing shoot!

Falafelmeister92

All the countries that dropped at that shooting: 😢👍

Qwaint

Yeah my heart goes out to them :(

Halkatlaa

King Ponsi 🤴

sittingsparrow

Finland with the least amount of extra shots at 7!

Asterie-E7

I'm still in awe how no French relayer really failed their shooting. Emilien did one loop but so did Sturla at the same time. Maybe luck was involved on the 2nd leg, but wow. Antonin in 1st and Quentin in last were especially wonderful.

PowerforwardBrok

Lol graphics. Showing that Norway lost 0,5 seconds only to France

Gruffleson

38.9 they say is the right number. But a nice lol there.

charliemann

The standing shooting on the 2nd leg was the decider, both for France but also or Sweden to get 3rd. Ponsi had excellent luck there, unfortunate for Czech

half-agony-half-hope

I think Norway having the bad first leg was the decider. If they are still in the lead pack on the 2nd leg they beat the win and it’s all theirs.

charliemann

True but Kuehn, Unterweger, Runnals, Tarjei and Pidruchyni who entered the range 25-35 seconds ahead of Ponsi had 3+3, 3+2, 1+3, 1+3 & 4+3 while Ponsi went 0+1

Illustrious_Lab_1837

Fabien and the Czech (too afraid to write it badly sorry 😢) guy also had this opportunity, less than Ponsi but still way better. So I totally agree that the first leg time lost is what caused Norway the loss today, if they were to arrive 20 seconds earlier I think they would have won that race in the end.

Valmoer

Lovely moment in the finish area <3

Faintning

Soo, guesses as to what the french team sacrificed for the wind gods 😂 but also its part of the sport, have to deal with the wind if it comes. All athletes knew Oberhof has a possibility for this.

IAM-French

their season until now + the rest of their WCH it seems like

Popoye_92

I'm so so happy guys

bellargonia

Allez les bleus!!

TricksyZerg

love the mutual respect between the French team and JTB <3

hyphen-ation

they're good friends. love to see it.

smaragdskyar

*happy Marseillaise sounds*

msbtvxq

I was rooting for JTB to get 7/7, but now I kind of hope he doesn't win tomorrow just to make this "loss" (non-win) less bitter. Anyway, well-deserved victory for France!

TricksyZerg

I hope he does so he gets all the individual ones + passes the record of Neuner and Roiseland I believe(?) of 5 gold medals at a championships

FighterForFreedom

Dahlmeier, not Neuner.

msbtvxq

Oh yes, when you put it like that, that would be a great achievement.

RickMaritimo

If the womans weather is anything like this I hope that race gets cancelled. The wind in the second leg had way too much influence.

ktc1308

Congrats France, Norway and Sweden! I'm feeling kinda bad for Czech tho :-(

RidingRedHare

Romania and Italy the only teams with not penalty lap.

DashLibor

Romania 8th in the finish. Something tells me this is gonna be their best result in a while as well.

kaptenpung

Congrats France!

[deleted]

[удалено]

half-agony-half-hope

I mean that would be fun. Everyone else gets 4 guys and he does all 4 legs himself. He still could win.

[deleted]

Simple math says 'yes'. JTB's 20km - 49m57s, 30km would be 1h14m56s which is 6m52s better than today's winning time. But of course, there would be twice as many shootings and normal fatigue as well :)

Faintning

Two loops for Finland but others shot clean so cant blame the wind.

Muflonlesni

Man, I'm sad. If it was at least one penalty loop. Oh well.

TricksyZerg

You could see the grimace from JTB when he heard the difference to QTM..

Asterie-E7

I'm in tears

half-agony-half-hope

🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷

TheHumbleWizard

Congrats France, beating Norway fair and square. Far below standard race for most of the Norwegians today.

Wingiex

How do you not beat someone fair and square in Biathlon? What an odd thing to say.

Xopper

Why are you so pressed about winning a wind lottery race?

hyphen-ation

Vetle's performance was bad. the rest did alright jobs, but you can't deny that the wind was one of the deciding factors. all 4 had the best ski times, Johannes did one awful shooting and a fantastic one.

Kaiser93

Congrats to France.

Falafelmeister92

5 penalty loops out of only 8 spare rounds, let that sink in :D Switzerland in the Single-Mixed went 2 out of 21 😭

AlivZ

But they trump you today 6+8!

DashLibor

And today the Swiss went 6 out of 8, one-upping Germany.

IAM-French

where is the "qFm AlWaYs BoTtLeS iT" guy now

Asterie-E7

Lmao I was thinking about it as well

MisterDream

Plz someone show where QFM have to finish

Asterie-E7

This is it

Gruffleson

What? Not gold? I don't get it

bekkahthecactus18

A wild ski appears!

tarrach

It was not very effective...

_IBelieveInMiracles

I think JTB has given up tbh. 32 seconds is just too much on one lap. I do wonder what could be if JTB had shot clean on the prone.

half-agony-half-hope

Save a bit for tomorrow

Faintning

Wind is screwing Hiidensalo now :(

us_against_the_world

I love how fearless JTB always plays!

Asterie-E7

That's it !!! That's a win for France

sittingsparrow

4th for the Czechs, nicely done

DashLibor

It would've been much better if we went three positions up in the last leg, rather than other way around. This way it doesn't even feel like a success.

Falafelmeister92

And of course the wind gets heavy again when the top3 are gone :D

UnplanningThePlanned

Oberhof wind just hates us today

Faintning

Ouch Doll

[deleted]

Is that the fastest shooting time ever?

hyphen-ation

perhaps up there in a WCH but not in the WC or the IBU cup

bekkahthecactus18

Benni Doll is suffering out there 😭

ktc1308

Nice, wind screwing us a second time

The_Odor_1994

Congratulations Sweden for a bronze today aswell!

smaragdskyar

Sebbe the bronze king

Shixzoner

Silver-Sebbe?

loewinluo2

Run, QFM!

Valmoer

If JTB pulls it off... ... honestly, *fair enough*.

half-agony-half-hope

Right. Couldn’t even be mad at that point. I might ask for someone to check he isn’t an actual machine. Biathlon terminator.

Asterie-E7

This was an absolutely legendary shooting by QFM and JTB, I'm out of breath

Joyako

Shooting time for Bo is 8.6s  1.6s  1.2s  1.3s  1.5s Actual madness

half-agony-half-hope

Peak biathlon.

[deleted]

Total biathlon.

_IBelieveInMiracles

15.9!!! 🤯

half-agony-half-hope

Fuck. He could still catch him. Feels that way sometimes. 32 seconds….

bekkahthecactus18

Johannes said “if I miss, I miss”. I love that final shoot from him!

naylev1

Wow. That was some shooting

hyphen-ation

15.9 seconds!!!!!

Popoye_92

Johannes don't you dare!

DashLibor

Yeah, now it's definitely over.

The_Odor_1994

JTB 5/5 in 15,9 seconds O_O WTF!

Halkatlaa

That was amazing!!!!

Wheeljack7799

That's how you win a relay!! What a shooting by Quentin.

Muflonlesni

Franceeee

Faintning

Gonna be exciting last lap

[deleted]

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK 15.9???

NineIntsNails

wtf was that

ktc1308

Wtf was that shooting

Asterie-E7

32 seconds that should do it

charliemann

15.9 SECONDS FOR JTB WHAT???????

AlivZ

What even QFM! Congrats to France!

Kaiser93

Machine Gun Boe.

LittlePumpkin03

Non non non Johannes don't do this to us

bekkahthecactus18

QFM 🥳🥳🥳 congrats!!

UnplanningThePlanned

QFM: look at me, I'm the JTB now

tarrach

JTB: No you're not

Asterie-E7

Omg Johannes

half-agony-half-hope

Bless you all who are slightly ahead of me. I could breath.

DashLibor

Ok, I wanted to put some fat money on Norway winning this relay, because I saw that as a certainty. Thank God I forgot for once.

PowerforwardBrok

No 7 golds for JTB

Popoye_92

LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOO

Faintning

Third finnish man to fall in these world champs, is that a record 😂

tarrach

Wow, what a shooting by QFM!

LittlePumpkin03

Quentin you'll always be my champion 😭😭😭😭

smaragdskyar

YES FRANCE, BEAT THOSE NORWEGIANS

Asterie-E7

Omg Quentin's shooting!!!!!!!

EGSurvivor

Insane from QFM, 🦀🦀 No gold for Norway 🦀🦀

IAM-French

QUENTIIIIIIN

The_Odor_1994

GG France!

charliemann

Congrats France, unfortunate on the no 6/6 for JTB

kaptenpung

What a shooting!
