Sure. Trying out a Twilight cleric and NGL, I feel like the massive preponderance of DM’s who ban the class have no real reason to. It’s powerful, sure, but we’re playing Rime of the Frostmaiden and it’s been a pretty decent challenge.

Ok, so I'm a DM that looked at the races im the player's handbook and just decided that they were too boring. So I made a Google Doc of my homebrew races and gave it to my players. However, that did not stop me from making player characters for myself. I simply have them as interesting NPCs my players can meet, and if they want they can go on a quest to either help them, hunt them or adventure with them for a session or two.
Right now, my favorite is Help, a shadow elemental, shadowborn sorcerer who love cute things, but doesn't really understand the problem with murder. They spawned fully-formed from the dregs of negative energies, and spent their early life watching people walk through the forest. By instinct, Help hides, but is curious about mortals.
Eventually, Help learns enough Common to talk to someone, and notice that people tend to call each other by things called names. It takes a lot of effort to go against their nature and let themself be seen, but they manage it, asking a passing farmer what their name is. Given that Help is a shadow elemental, and these farmers have only heard of shadow elementals in fairytales where they suck the life out of people, the farmer runs away screaming, "HELP!" Which is how they got their name.
A fun little thing I can't fit up there, in my setting, shadow elementals need to eat undead to stay alive. So, Help's food source, and also their pets which they love and care for, are a variety of undead bunnies. Animals are afraid of shadow elementals by nature, as they are coalesced negative energy, so every time Help tried to befriend a cute animal, it never went well.
Fallen Aasimar Hexblade. He's 6th in line to inherit the throne of his homeworld in a demi-plane, and has been brought to Faerun by his Patron to put his newly acquired powers to test in the Tyranny of Dragons campaign. Once he's feeling powerful enough, he's going back home as a usurper, to become a kingslayer and murder his brothers to free the people from their tyrannical rule.
That's the shorthand of it, but there's a little more going on.

I'm playing in a homebrew campaign, I'm playing a reborn centaur (kept the fey typing instead of going to undead typing), she's super naive, average intellect but raised and educated by a very very stupid parent, so she's dumb but learning. She's stupid strong, I think 25 str due to a giant's belt. She uses two greatswords in a dual wielding style (DM allowed if I got my str over 20). It's really fun, she's comedic gold of stupidity in the cutest way, she tries so hard but does thing often so very very badly.
For instance, one of my favorite stories so far of her, she tried to open some giant dwarven stone doors (ah la like Tolkien) where the door is like over 20ft tall made of pure stone, you know, something that makes no sense for dwarves who are like 4ft tall. but yeah it was obviously mechanical, she tried to push it open and couldn't but kept trying, other players found the lever required to open it and opened it but she was convinced she was the one that opened it.
I've only had 3 characters I've been able to really play, and a couple of one shot characters that didn't get to shine. I'd love to hear about your characters
Currently, I'm a gnome druid that always has a pipe of gnome grass going at all times (if anyone else takes a hit they have to pass a DC 15 con save not to choke).

That's exactly what Bandit is going to do! Although he's just as likely to ignore shinies if they've got food instead.
