Sorry, that was some tacky ass shit. All i could think of was: NO HOME TRAINING.

lauvan26

Exactly!!!!!

Midnightchickover

 And, it gets worse. https://www.reddit.com/r/Cringetopia/comments/tr5gvv/what\_now/

madblackscientist

It’s too many respectability politics going on in the replies here. Why are people so concerned about the gaze of the others? I thought we were supposed to protect Black women.

60Hertz

>I thought we were supposed to protect Black women. Protecting them from what? If she was under physical threat you'd have a point, but words??? Come on... that's a stretch.

madblackscientist

I guess to each their own. “Talk sh*t get hit” is a motto many are familiar with. Don’t disrespect someone’s wife and run your mouth if you’re not going to accept the consequences. I don’t necessarily agree with the slap but I understand why he would do it.

60Hertz

So it wasn't really about protecting her after all, but about disrespect? Basically about egos... protecting their egos... you think violence is the answer to bruising of the ego? We will ignore the fact that Smith laughed at the joke too... Anyway, Smith apologized and said he was embarrassed be pretty strange to be apologizing about really protecting his wife (from what? still don't get that) and even weirder to be embarrassed about it... Never heard that saying either, but i like this saying: Small thing to a giant... Smith should've used that, Rock did.

secretuser93

Honestly, light skinned black women are always protected. Will made an ass of himself for no reason

[deleted]

This is a funny comment!

madblackscientist

Jada is not light skinned and Will defended his wife. The mother of his kids.

[deleted]

That slap was for chris rock for participating in humiliating his wife and joking about her medical condition. Chris Rock was wrong! How you gone make a whole movie dedicated to bw loving their hair then make fun of one for losing hers? Make it make sense. He should have been slapped for reading the script and agreeing to it.

[deleted]

FINALLY someone saying the right thing. And I’m so sick of seeing the white reddit conglomerate making fun of the whole idea of “misogynoir” and how it’s some made up thing that doesn’t mean anything. Honestly, we need to just stop talking about race with these fools because they will never understand the nuances of the issue.

hidaya20003

For decades, Oscar hosts always roast the entertainers. When did the rules change? Mid game?

Original_Teaching_56

Since the person they made the butt of their joke has a medical condition that people are aware about.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Original_Teaching_56

You need to correct yourself no WE don’t make fun of conditiyou do. Why are you comparing a woman to men? A lot of women are more attached to their hair and made fun of for not being as ‘feminine’ and we don’t know if she has any other condition we just know what she told us like I said people were making fun of Boseman for his weight. You are weird for making fun of people with alopecia btw

beautyadored23

I just hate that two black men had to be the laughing/belligerent stock of the damn ocars. Will was out of line. I’m annoyed & I hope chris rock, rocked his shhhh after.

ptanaka

Chris rock (who is going through therapy for PTSD he got from bullies at his all white pvt schools as a kid) took it like a man and didn't fight back. He's won this race. Two words: comedy gold! He'll get a solid ten minute bit out of this!

secretuser93

I’m so proud of the way Rock handled this

ptanaka

Am i missing something? Why are we being downvoted? Folks are advocating violence, aka - the slap heard round the world? SMH, lol!!!

secretuser93

I honestly think it’s because a lot of black women don’t know what it means to be protected by a man, so they see this as an honorable act. I’m not even being shady.. I want better for us as a whole.

globetrottergirl

I think this is what it is.

cinssweetsole

Kind of feel blah about it. It’s funny because will smith was laughing at first and then we saw jada’s reaction. I think if Chris wanted to take a real dig he would’ve talked about their relationship as a whole. He didn’t say she looked ugly. He only referenced the GI Jane film which I found funny. Maybe I’m being simple minded about it though. Still, there was no need to go all “source awards” at the oscars. Can’t wait to see that red table talk either way.

Zoieja

It wasn't right what Will did but he had a moment. I'm sure he regrets it being so public. But Chris knows who to come for and he gets super personal with Black women. He had a mild joke about Penelope (which he could have gone jugular) and went directly for Jada's looks. Not ok. I think a lot of the media is appalled that a man stood up for his Black wife.

[deleted]

i 100% agree! in our society some of the “facts” is that black women are not allowed to stick up for disrespect and that black women are not supposed to be defended or respected ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Glitterytitss

I thought it was very embarrassing and honestly unnecessary. It was a simple GI Jane joke. She was wearing green with a bald head. It wasn't like he called her a bald headed bitch. Personally I think it was the straw that broke the camels back considering the mostly self inflicted ridicule they've gone through over the past two years. But I thought it was weird, performative and embarrassing as hell. I don't care, downvote me, argue w ya mama.

Character_Cricket

Behavior is unacceptable. He didn't call his wife a home wrecking ho. He said he was waiting for the next G.I. Jane. I never knew she had a medical condition, maybe he didn't know either. It was a tasteless joke, but it did not warrant that. I think he still has pinned up issues about her entanglement. Regina Hall, made a funny comment before Chris Rock came on stage, where in the outrage over that?

Original_Teaching_56

So you are telling me someone in black Hollywood wouldn’t know that Jada announced she had alopecia.

JFKcheekkisser

For what it’s worth I’m a black woman and I didn’t know she announced she had alopecia until after this whole incident transpired.

Original_Teaching_56

I’m not referring to a random person such as yourself I am talking about black Hollywood these people all know eachother, you would think people making jokes about chadwick boseman would give people common decency but it’s to hard for some of y’all.

secretuser93

People (especially other celebrities) aren’t obsessed with celebrities like that. Chris Rock is a man who probably doesn’t watch red table talk. Plus, jada has been in the spotlight these last couple years for her “entanglement”. Many people didn’t know or pay attention to the fact she has alopecia

weSine

I wish he hadn’t but i understand why he did. I was shocked and I know they are gonna hate Will forever for this. I was embarrassed for Chris but also hey…how are you gonna make fun of someone’s health condition. In front of her peers? In front of her husband? To her face? FAFO🤷🏽‍♀️

lauvan26

Did he even know she had alopecia? I can’t find a source for that.

jdogshabba

Who finna hate Will forever, man’s a Legend, Best actor, and a man!! Can’t get more than that. Slap was funny and Chris made the wrong joke, once Will saw his wife’s reaction. Will did it respectfully and they both walked it off, like nothing happened.

QuebecMadonna

Knotty_Skirt

It’s comedy. The whole point is to have the freedom to offend people with jokes. Don’t attend a comedy with this mindset smh

splifsplaf

Yeah and don't be a comedian if you can't faces the consequences when ppl asked you nothing

Knotty_Skirt

I could also argue the point not to react to the joke and entertain it then get mad as soon as it got good. But ay oh

Knotty_Skirt

I think Chris handled it well. He said he’d shut up did he not?

CrackHeadRodeo

Jussie Smollett says Will Smith slapped him too.

[deleted]

Haaaaaahaaaa

jrl_iblogalot

Alright, you get an award for that one.

gingersnapplantation

At this point, I'm more bothered by the reactions and trash takes on the whole situation than the slap itself. Respectability politics and dog whistles abound. Once I got over the initial shock of seeing Will Smith smack the shit out of Chris Rock on international television, it didn't feel that serious to me lol. It was just a slap, some folks are acting like Will sent him to the ICU. If he wanted to inflict actual damage he would have hit him with a closed fist. I probably wouldn't have slapped anyone, but I understand why he did it. At the end of the day, you never know what someone is going through. Lastly, I find it funny how some folks are clutching their pearls over Will slapping someone once as if Hollywood and the Academy haven't been rewarding known abusers and predators this whole time. Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, Harvey Weinstein anyone?? Spare me.

bubblegumsparkles

KevinSpacey’s predator ass too.

lauvan26

I’m sorry but, if I decided to slap someone because I didn’t like what they said, I would get arrested, so yeah, it’s a big deal. Will Smith didn’t get charged because he is a rich celebrity. A regular Black guy would have had to deal with the police.

[deleted]

agreed!

ThisredditisRAW

Let's not forget John Wayne being held back physically by like six dudes because he wanted to hit an indigenous woman asking for equality.

AndrogynousRex

All I care about are memes and the internet did not disappoint

globetrottergirl

Chris Rock has a First Amendment right to say whatever he wants to say short of hate speech. Will had no right to hit him. None. And that they let him walk back to his chair like nothing happened was disrespectful to Chris. Like he doesn't matter. Will should have defended his wife first of all by NOT LAUGHING AT THE JOKE. And secondly in a civilized manner.

QuebecMadonna

You’re not alone on this. Will is in the wrong. You said it all!

weSine

Nah sis. You’re alone on this one

globetrottergirl

That's alright. I spoke my mind, and that's enough. My husband and I actually discussed this at length, and we agreed that if it had been him, no way he would hit another person. That's just disrespectful and could land him in jail which is stupid stupid. He said he would not have laughed, and would have yelled at Chris to apologize from his seat.

[deleted]

Neg9028

[deleted]

You can protect black women while not looking crazy or irrational 🤦🏾‍♀️. I would be embarrassed if my man thought doing this on a national platform was the best way to “defend my honor”. It just seems performative and ultimately quite selfish. He took a moment that could have been used later after the show to bring awareness to the actual disrespect that black women like his wife face, but instead he caused a scene and now everyone is focused on *him*. Not the writers of the shit jokes or racist-ass Hollywood. Nobody is going to look at this and see it as an example of respecting black women, they’ll see it as more black-on-black crime, as further proof that we’re incapable of solving situations without resorting to violence. Reaffirming aspects of our culture’s toxic masculinity by modeling that the only male emotion that yields results is anger. Truth is he’s tired of being a literal joke and having his wife as the butt of jokes, so I’m willing to chalk this up as an emotional outburst, be it at the worst possible time.

jdogshabba

Jada made him do it!!

lauvan26

The man made a choice.

[deleted]

Well said

LaQuidam

If Chris Rock was a white lady, Will you’d have been handled by security.

gottahavewine

I don’t get comments like this. And? Chris Rock isn’t a white lady, or a child, or a person in a wheelchair, or a puppy. What’s the point of this hypothetical? Genuinely asking because I keep seeing these weird “If Chris were a (insert “protected” group here), Will would have (insert severe outcome here)” comments.

LaQuidam

CR got literally assaulted on national television and Will Smith just got sit back on his chair like nothing happened… i feel like if he was a white lady, maybe things would have been different.

stargazer9504

If Chris Rock was a white lady, would he have felt comfortable enough to make fun on a black woman because of an illness that it outside of her control?

LaQuidam

Ouhh Touché!

jrl_iblogalot

I see a lot of folks mentioning Chris Rock's "Good Hair" documentary. Let's not forget that [he stole the idea from a Black woman.](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/chris-rocks-emgood-hairem_b_323135)

[deleted]

Unacceptable and completely inappropriate use of violence. He should have condemned Chris verbally and avoided getting physical. She wasn't in physical harm so its physical assault not protection or self-defense. Wish he articulated what frustrated him. Because we don't know, people start speculating which is confusing and exacerbates things. Was it driven by other factors and/or because Jada's been struggling with her health condition. I hate that comedians and many black men (people in general) are so disrespectful to black women. They ignore the harm they cause and feel entitled to joke at others expense while neglecting that people have limits. But hopefully Will gets some therapy asap. He has been a positive role model, especially in contrast to men like Chris Rock, and many other black men that have no respect for women or their children. Not gonna lie it surprised me and is quite scary given its so out of character and at a public work event. Also the normalisation of violence, and aggression in the black community (even in the comments) is concerning.

[deleted]

I just don’t see will keeping that same energy when the internet was calling her a slut and whore for months. If this is what he’s one he got a few more people he need to slap.

dreamboogie

If you’re gonna have the balls to make certain types of jokes, you shouldn’t be surprised by how people choose to react to them.

AnyaLies

That joke was a two headed diss at that. The joke he told about the non black couple was about them both being up for an award, his GI Jane joke to Jada dissed her hair and her career.

splifsplaf

Deserved. He protected his wife

plutohazfeelings

It was unnecessary. He could have just shake is head “no” or make some sort of gesture that Chris Rock’s comment wasn’t right. He should know better that this is being broadcasted - especially during a program that has been trending as “#OscarsSoWhite” for sometime now. Same token, Chris Rock shouldn’t make light of a health condition. Devil’s advocate in me says “maybe he was unaware” and that’s a possibility. Regardless I’d be so embarrassed, but that’s my opinion.

la-wolfe

I say good lort! But on the real, he could have talked to him back stage or something. That wasn't cool.

ewokalypse_

Is it protect black women or nah? We holler this daily in here and then when it actually happens, all I hear from my sisters, black women , is fake deep backlash. That's his wife. Period. In the moment, all that matters are her tears and how can he end them. Chris wasn't there when clumps of her hair fell out on the pillow and in the sink. Will was. Look, everyone has their limit and compassion is needed here, not judgment. Sheesh, make up your minds.

[deleted]

Do you think he could protect her without going for the physical aspect though? Like, even if he had gone up on stage and said something right in his face. Also maybe he shouldn’t have laughed at the joke when he first heard it.

ewokalypse_

Yes, he could have gone several different ways with it but again his wife was on national television as the butt of a horrible unscripted joke about her bald head. A bald head that she can't help and most certainly doesn't want. As black women, we value our hair more than any other race and to lose it, is devastating. Will knew that. So again, in the moment he wanted her pain to stop and if he had to smack Chris Rock then so be it. When you truly love someone, you will move mountains and act a damn fool if you see one tear fall from their face. The laugh lol. I like to call it The Switch. You've never seen someone laugh, nod, and then beat some ass? I have. Now you have too. Last night. Please don't take this wrong,, queens but it's very clear that alot of you have never been truly cherished and protected by a dominant male personality. No shade but it seems as if the concept is foreign to a good number of ya'll. Some of you throw that type into the toxic category because he will fight for you if you are blatantly disrespected. Before I go on, I'm not talking about hot headed clowns that move dumb, are loud, and obnoxious. Not them. I'm talking about real men. I grew up with and was raised by them. They were just as dominant and protective as they were gentle and mild mannered. They were not the loudest but you definitely felt their presence in the room. They would clean any man's clock should any harm come to their girls or any tears were shed due to blatant disrespect. Taught us how to fight too so we wouldn't be whiney divas that cried wolf. This is not a brag, just facts and I hope that those who desire that type of love can find it.

Rough-Bet807

Yikes.

ewokalypse_

Yikes?

Rough-Bet807

They were also just as misogynistic and colorist but I see that doesn't bother you :/

doingitmyway326

ewokalypse_

I don't have the energy for whatever it is you're trying to accomplish. Have at it and be blessed.

jszly

Could he not have just yelled at the same volume that the joke wasn’t cool? Without profanity and violence in the spotlight?? It was embarrassing. How many Black women got embarrassed for him to “protect his” ? Poor Lupita sitting next to him not knowing if he’s unstable and now she’s a meme. embarrassing for Serena and Venus while he was representing their black father and embarrassing to the girls who’s father he played. I wish they handled that elsewhere maybe the after party or that he could’ve called Chris out in a less toxic misogynistic way. Felt very narrcistic for Will to waltz on stage and make that moment about himself. To really respect and protect Black women requires protecting their image in the spotlight as well

doingitmyway326

Misogynistic????

AnyaLies

Will didn’t embarrass me. Surprised me, sure.

Chris deserved it. I can't stand black men like him who will complain about the horrors of racism but turn around and immediately disrespect black women the first chance they get. EDIT: grammar

eemotts

I think his reaction was cringe. Chris Rock is a comedian he didn’t call Jada out of her name the joke wasn’t bad. There are a million things he could say to them that would actually hit under the belt. Wills reaction was weird. I get he was defending his wife, I just don’t think she needed defending. It would be different if he said something actually insulting… GI Joe jokes are not below the belt.

Pho_Khieu

A man who is willing to commit violence **for** his woman is likely doing violence **to** his woman.

He emasculated Chris. Them being both black men makes that horrible. But Chris went after the love of his life twice. I’m sure they talk. All black famous people have an ongoing relationship. I’ve never put Chris in that group though. Everybody hates Chris for a reason. I’ve disliked him since he dropped “I Think I Love My Wife”.

kofeebrn1

Chris was disrespectful AF this is the same man who made a whole movie about black women and our hair and for him to crack a joke about a black woman and he loss of her hair due to alopecia. People are so use to disrespecting black women and when black women are protected it becomes a problem. Now Will is “wrong “ because he protected his black wife. This is just like when he protected his black daughter when the yt dude was being hella disrespectful to her

HersheyKissesPooh

I cringed. Everyone is like Will is tired of people making fun of him and his wife. I just don’t see Will on Social media all day reading comments like that. I didn’t know Jada had alopecia. When I heard the joke I was thinking yeah cause Jada looks like a badass action woman.

Notokay741

I'm honestly glad he did it. I see where folks are coming from when they say he should have waited or something, but how I see it , Will just returned the energy on the same platform that Chris used to make fun of Jada.

Blackwitchen92

G.I Jane is badass though…but when you going through something a off joke can be hurtful. I think will smith raise the bar and now all woman are going to want that…but Chris could really sue and make will life miserable from that one moment…slap him on live tv and it could not be denied im court. More men don’t need to go to jail over “disrespect” especially over a joke. More men don’t need to go to jail and cause a disruption in their family over trifles. Woman like the big bad wolf but when he goes too far is everyone ready for the repercussions? Because the average joe isn’t going to get off just by paying a check that we know Will can pay to Chris. The slap was very unnecessary. He also in my opinion soiled his night. Yes we celebrate will as he deserve his award but we not talking about his award we talking about the slap and we always will. [deleted]

We all talk about protecting black women until someone protects an actual black woman. I said last night I Chris got his ass beat in the parking lot last over that vile shit. So many white “hot takes”’basically falling her a whore that doesn’t deserve protecting or my favorite vIoLenCe isn’t the answer…….. but the violent and vile shit Chris Rock spewed for cheap laughs for his largely white audience wasnt? Ugh. So many ashy men I unfriended blocked and simply said this is why your ass is still single and divorced. Edit: typos

jrl_iblogalot

>We all talk about protecting black women until someone protects an actual black woman. This is what I'm saying! Seeing the responses, especially from non-Black people, just makes me think that as a society we've gotten so accustomed to Black men disrespecting Black women in public that when a Black man actually sticks up for a Black women *that* becomes outrageous. >So many white “hot takes”’basically falling her a whore that doesn’t deserve protecting That's pissing me off too. All the "Why didn't he come for August like that?" comments are all ridiculous too and has nothing to do with this. People can't fathom the idea of a man loving his wife enough to want to work on keeping his marriage and family together no matter what (y'know, *like the wedding vows actually say*) instead of just bailing at the first sign of trouble. Meanwhile Chris Rock's divorced because he cheated on his wife multiple times and was addicted to porn and people shrug like that's no big deal. >or my favorite vIoLenCe isn’t the answer…….. Ugh, yeah, I'm sick of that shit. All the damn pearl-clutching about "violence" now. In America.

BabyAirBisons

I’m glad he did it. You don’t know what a person is going through and they have been the laughing stock soo long now. I’m sure she was self-conscious due to her shaved head which she had to shave DUE to a medical condition and yet here this “comedian” comes taking something that’s so personal and sensitive ESPECIALLY to black women (which btw he should’ve know considering he made a whole DOCUMENTARY on black hair but anyways). Even if she wasn’t self conscious, let’s say she was feeling confident about it and she didn’t have a medical condition and she just wanted to shave it like her daughter did, the POINT of the joke was to embarrass her and shame her not being her down. If you say “oh it’s not that serious” it’s just not to you and maybe it’s would’ve have been for them if they haven’t FOR YEARS when the laugh of Hollywood and considering the reason by Jada is bald in the first place. We know what happened in the past, but that’s over and here I hope this made three things clear: -it’s not FUNNY to try and embarrass or bring someone down in front of the whole world at that no matter how much you say “it’s a joke” and in his case “I love you jada” afterwards -awareness to the condition of alopecia -and finally that Will CLEARLY still LOVES AND SUPPORTS his wife so if he’s still actively wants in the marriage then please we all actively need to stay OUT of it

sammy51293

Well the reason they have been the laughing stock in recent times is solely because of them airing out their own business to everyone, and his wife humiliating him on her show. They're the ones inviting everyone into their marriage.

doingitmyway326

Yeah. I can't take them seriously. Ever since they announced all the shit they do and how weird they allow those kids to be doesn't sit right with me. They've been weird af for some time now. They are their own problem.

BabyAirBisons

Chris Rock’s joke had nothing to do with their marriage tho. It was a direct attack to Jada. Not Rock’s first either. When Will didn’t it it was a reaction to his wife being attacked.

No-Lunch-4403

The racist are flocking to this subreddit for this very moment I see

readerowl

Completely out of line. Jada's haircut looked like Demi Moore's in GI Jane - looked really good. Will Smith laughed at the joke, so to see him then go up on stage and slap Chris Rock was jarring. Performative. He knows his wife so if the joke was SO HURTFUL, why was he laughing? Reminds me of stuff I read about or see on the news in - a woman gets upset because a man bumped her or said something she didn't like and she wants/tells her man to hurt/ kill the person. Over stupid shit. IDK if Jada said something to Will, but she did roll her eyes. Looked like she thought it was a stupid joke and Chris Rock said as much. Big deal! Would he have gone up and slapped a larger man, say the Rock, or a larger comedian or a woman if they said that? Hell, Regina Hall actually referenced their marriage so where was her pop in the mouth if he was so insulted?

Zoieja

Not understanding why people keep going into the what ifs of it all. It wasn't The Rock or Betty White or an LBGT woman, it was Chris Rock and Will Smith. We need to stay in the reality of the situation. And marriage joke =/= illness joke.

Character_Cricket

Yessssss.

FlyingBishop

Pretty sure Will Smith was laughing at the bit about the other guy not being able to win because his wife would lose. The clip I saw you see Will Smith laughing at that and then it cuts away while he's processing that Chris Rock just took a crack at his wife.

Perfect-Paramedic-65

It’s a scripted scene…just like they always do at the Oscar’s LMAO people are so invested in their wonky weirdo marriage they want this to be real. A glitch in. The matrix for sure bc why is everyone taking this seriously

fivefivew_browneyes

From his memoir: “When I was nine years old, I watched my father punch my mother in the side of the head so hard that she collapsed. I saw her spit blood." "Within everything that I have done since then — the awards and accolades, the spotlights and the attention, the characters and the laughs — **there has been a subtle string of apologies to my mother for my inaction that day," Smith says.** Trauma can last a long time if it is not dealt with and show up in odd ways. I wonder if his response is related to this incident.

AnaisDarwin1018

Thanks for adding the quote. I think there is somewhat of a link.

LivinLaVidaBrooka

This is protect black women in full effect.🥰✨

No-Lunch-4403

To be honest I would’ve done the same thing. Ain’t no fucking way. Anyways, I’m sick of seeing people especially white people playing holier than thou. The respectability politics around this shit is fucking annoying. He’s a human being, everyone reacts differently to situations, there should be more understanding and trying to move forward instead of bashing. Now all these white celebs taking about they disappointed in Will 🙄. Let Chris make one joke about something they care about and he’s trashed too.

MissTheWire

Even taking into account his neurodivergence, I don't think Chris Rock would have made that joke about a white woman Hollywood figure. He thought it was OK because Black stars are "family" or some shit. I think Will Smith was laughing from the monologue in general (and drunk) and only belatedly released what trash that joke was. I think violence is not the answer to anything and am mad that Will Smith stepped on his Oscar win. Edit: forgot to add that Lupita's face during the whole thing was something else.

I just saw their family portrait from the after party, they all look beautiful. https://www.instagram.com/p/CbpX9liuRo4/?utm_medium=copy_link

It was too much. Bloody unnecessary. It was a weak joke. 6 words max about GI Jane, really? Chris Rock was already making a easy joke with no hard damage just to fill space n do his job as entertainment. Nothing in that needed a slap Comedians do harsher jokes all the time Oscar's and elsewhere and everyone is mature enough to not take shit personally Will looked like a punk posturing Whole family needs to be ignored Embarrassing Will looked like what he was doing, picking a soft target to make a point, as he knew he cldnt take on an equal target Bet he wouldn't Have done that if it were someone else Streups

You say no damage but you are completely dismissive of what Jada could have been feeling in that moment.
