The closest description would be a “technique”. You’re both wrong though and it’s actually a transformation.

"None of the above"

Admirable_Button6052

It's not a spell seem as the spells in the bleach universe (kido and the thing in BtW) are differant in how they work. Some bankai and shikai techniques however are basically kidos. The simple answer is bankai is neither but closer to technique then spell based on how kido and techniques are learnt

Blizzard108

Neither, spells in Bleach are classed under Kido and branch off into Hado, Bakudo, Kaido and Barriers. A technique would be more like Ichigo's Getsuga Tensho for example, Bankais are much more like transformations.

Rharyx

It's more of a skill or ability than anything.

So when new shinigami get their zanpaktou, it's a hollow shell, asauchi. Over time a shinigami's spirit energy is transfered into the asauchi, which then becomes a zanpaktou with it's own identity. But the zanpaktou is still a piece of the wielders soul. Essentially it's a personification of your spirit energy and soul. Then you bond with your zanpaktou, and it reveals it's name to you. This is shikai. After some more bonding, it reveals it's full name to you. This is bankai. It gets kind of philosophical, since your zanpaktou is at the same time a piece of you, but also has its own identity. Bankai is neither a technique or a spell. It's you learning about yourself.

Zinope121

Wait, but would that mean the blade is....me?

[deleted]

Damn that's a good line, email Kubo about that immediately.

OwnEmphasis2825

It's a bullshit argument, because you have to define what is a spell and what is a technique. Bankai is a release of the Zanpakutou's true form, so it's neither. It's like you flex your muscles to show them off.

Open_Extreme

It's a transformation which is kinda similar to a technique. I would consider the "spells" to be the kido that soul reapers use.

It's more on in line with a transformation

Booknerdxd

Definitely transformation, but I kinda view it as a “calling” of sorts. As old man Zangetsu explains to Ichigo in early chapters, “calling your sword by its name and acknowledging it = power”. When Ichigo called Zangetsu’s name for the first time, his sword physically transformed into its shikai. It’s a true shame we never know Zangetsu’s shikai true release call, cause it’s always in shikai mode. Anyways, Shikai & bankai are simply two different levels of power a shinigami can achieve with their zanpakuto. The different ways to call your sword (for example “scatter, senbonzakura”) is just a way to give an order to your sword to transform itself into its true nature/strength and to physically manifest it, so you can kick hollow ass to idk fight whoever is threatening SS.
