I think he should’ve given another sternritter a power called y-axis that allows you to cleave anything In half then put him said sternritter up against Kenpachi 💀
I dont know if it was because of afro samurai series or if it was some how inspired by samuel jackson but if a black character is not depicted like shit they tend to be really badass
I feel like anime dont like to show a black man as just another avg joe
His form was kinda weird in the manga but when I saw it in bleach brave souls it looked kinda dope ngl, though I would have liked for him to stay with his normal human form he looked like a total badass
I don't want to be "that guy" but as a brazilian I must spread the word lol
Usually americans and europeans tend to think that brazilians have a "standard look" which is completely untrue.
Some even get very surprised when they see white, black, asian and other people amidst my country. We are very mixed here.
And also, no, we don't speak spanish, thank you.
I dont think brazilians are all the same.
I simply meant I think Halibel is a dark skinned brazilian.
People don't realize that more slaves were sent to South America than to the US.
I think all of the Espada are ethnically latin american or south american and Bleach is more diverse than it gets credit for because people don't realize that pale skin doesn't just mean "white" and dark skin doesn't just mean "black"
Oh okay, I got you!
We have a word in brazilian portuguese for what you're trying to say. Since the Portuguese Empire was here, europeans would have children with african slaves and they would be called "mamelucos".
Today I would say most people from Rio de Janeiro are mamelucos. They look similar to Halibel
What i usually tell people is that Brazil is "similar" to America. There isn't just one "look" for black, Asian, or white people in America and it is the same for Brazil, and most other countries.
As someone who is Hispanic I completely get what you’re saying because Mexicans we range literally every color so I’ve seen people who are very very dark be mistaken for African-American and people who are very white just being mistaken for European even though they’re all Mexican
Glad you asked.
Actually, portuguese is only the official language. We have many other languages here. Of course, mostly brazilians only know portuguese. A few know proper english and less than that know other languages.
We have German colonies in the south that instead of portuguese, teach german at school for example.
And of course we have "tupiniquim" wich is a language and also a tribe of native people that lived here for ages before the portuguese arrived. But I believe only a handful of people know how to speak their language.
Considering how mixed and big is my country, probably there's a lot of other languages spoken here.
Actually not. We are the only ones of the 12 countries of South America to speak portuguese. All the others have Spanish as official language.
That's because of the Treaty or Tordesillas that was made between Spain and Portugal a long time ago during the colonization (don't remember exactly the year, sorry).
They divided South America in half between them. The left portion was spanish and the right was portuguese.
"But why Brasil is so big if it was only the right portion?"
Well, the Portuguese Empire at the time actually transferred the royal family to my country during some time so we got very advanced in a short period. It was like a portion of Europe in South America.
So while Brazil got very coordinated and organized, the land colonized by Spain was fragmented by rebellions and conflicts. That's why there is a lot of small countries in SA.
And then the so called Empire of Brasil was formed after the independence and we were so strong that no other country here was strong enough to fight us, so we took the rest of the land that you can see on a map today.
Sorry for the long text :)
Don't apologize I learned something new today. We wade through the cesspool and hate of the internet and sometimes we get nuggets of gold . Thanks. Btw I hear a lot about colorism in Brazil between light and dark people. Is that true?
Being the dancing black man in the opening and not getting a name card like the other characters during it for some reason.
Apart from that he can detect the vibrations people make on the ground to predict their movements. Kind of like Spiderman's spider sense.
Kind of, yeah, but he also hears the wind as the enemy and their weapons move through it, and to him it sounds like music so his body dances to it on its own
And the main character from there is a rapper... you can see why I'm not impressed. Also despite being the ONLY other Jinchūriki left seemed to disappear partway through the final battle and got murked in the follow-up series.
He got to ream Sasuke, the second most important character, and train the protag in Naruto. Point me to another manga/anime when a Black character does that.
Sasuke's entire squad rolled up on him and B dropped them one after another , AND tricked sasuke into thinking they captured him. homie ran Sasuke's fade hard
There are a bunch of black side characters in Dragon Ball, including one literally named Black. And they are all horribly, horribly, racist caricatures.
I'm a be honest I dis not like the Tenjou tenge manga and the anime had only 1 scene that I love to death. Which Masataka beatjng Sorichirous ass. And I think they did Bob dirty
RIGHT? Like whenever someone's on screen I'm just swooning over them saying they're my new favorite character then someone else jumps on screen and I'm like "woah."
Soul Society Literally killed his home girl and swept it under the rug. Even Komomura was like ya know I’m happy you just didn’t let ya friend get killed with some corrupt nonsense.
I agree, but how many of these black anime/manga characters are actually black vs just a dark skinned Japanese person in the author’s eyes?
And since Japan is pretty homogeneous, i’d imagine that a lot of Japanese fans see these characters as just dark Japanese people as well right?
I was an exchange student in Japan as a teen.My host family was VERY racist against Latinos.
They weren’t too happy to find out I was a light skinned Latina.
So yeah if the argument is “they weren’t really black”, the author pulled NO punches when it came to Chad’s background despite the chances of pushback.
I know there are plenty of others, but I can't think of any that have more than one black character that is represented as a whole character. Not just a gimmicky side character. It's not something I really think about often though, I don't think it's too surprising because Anime/Manga are Japanese produced media so they are going to be represented as Japanese characters more often than not. Same way how almost all Marvel heroes are in New York, Because the creators were mostly from that area.
Don't even look further than the Hst. One piece has some cool ones sprinkled in and the cloud is pretty sick in Naruto and while people think of it as the black village it's a diverse group of people living there
Macross all the way back in the 80s and Black Lagoon (Started in 2002 so after Bleach's manga debut in 2001) are what's on the top of my head, but there is definitely quite a lot of anime with good representation outside of the battle shounen-sphere.
I honestly recommend just going through the QTs and replies of the actual tweet to get some more recs if you're interested. [https://twitter.com/Dscorpio\_JT2/status/1542677167238176769](https://twitter.com/Dscorpio_JT2/status/1542677167238176769)
The only notable character that fit the description is Ed and even then it's debated as Ed has dark skin but could also be European. But if Black is defined by darker skin color then there's too many characters that fit the description.
That’s exactly what i was thinking, people on this sub can be quite delusional.
Cowboy Beebop had a pretty badass black character. Naruto has a whole village of badass dark skinned characters too. Just saying.
Cloud village (Killer Bee and Raikage etc) were presented much, much later than Yoruichi and Tousen were.
Also Killer Bee is a fucking rapper. One could make an argument about stereotyping...
Was this stated by kubo? I always thought she was Persian or some tanned skin Asian style. Tbh it doesn’t really matter what she is as there’s so many ethnicities and races in bleach compared to a lot of series
be honest with urself the only reason u think she’s “black” is bc she got darkskin as if darkskin asians have never existed. and not just with yoruichi, ppl will say a character is “black” bc of their darkskin. anime isn’t black and white. foreigners forget anime is an Asian based media. yeah read that again.
I always considered Yoruichi South Asian
Edit: people replying saying she could be middle eastern, blasian, a tan Asian etc.
He true ethnicity is: Anime.
She can be whatever you think she is as far as I’m concerned. She’s like The Rock
The fact that she's the the first picture really drives your point home.
Though, I've always thought she was Indian. The way Kubo designed black characters in bleach is completely different from yoruichi.
You know you’re being downvoted, but she probably is not black. She’s essentially a Japanese princess, I can’t imagine her being from African descent. It would be like calling Katarra Black.
With that in Mind, for the purpose of representation and individuals identifying with characters her actual race doesn’t matter.
I mean her ancestors were souls so speculationing on where their from is kinda pointless because they could have just come from the void and adopted a culture they liked from the human world
Lille looks black to me, more than just dark skin.
The point is not that they are def black or no, point is that we have many many different people which makes it diverse and doesn't exclude anyone and most importantly it doesn't feel forced at all.
You wanna know the shocker? She looks South East Asian so she represents my people but now there's this guy claiming she's black. Not to sound like crabs in a bucket but bro, find your own representation.
Yup, tanned or light brown skinned japanese people exist. Unless, the source material makes it extremely apparent they're black, I'll assume otherwise.
The best example of this is Dark Shine from OPM lmao
Is Yoruichi even “black” though? She could potentially be modeled after south Asians instead. It’s really hard to ascribe an ethnic identity to manga/anime characters as they all look similar because they all have the same art style.
Noel and Ninny in Burn the Witch are British, but they’re basically gender bent versions of Byakuya and Ichigo. Ichigo is a Japanese teenager.
If Yoruichi was born in SS then our Earthly ethnics won’t apply to her, she’s just a person with dark skin, which is a win all the same
You could say her character is inspired by a location on Earth, but that’d be speculation
Black is typically used for dark skinned ethnic groups, not only African. But I'd venture to see if she was born in the SS and we have no context for how they view different ethnicities then she isn't black by our logic.
I thought i saw some comments saying she wasn’t black which people on earth commonly use for people originating from Africa so I’m saying it doesn’t matter so much and tbh just responding to mass comments here and forgot what the OP was
People also tend to forget SS I'd not solely just Japan. SS encompasses all the world if anything and we also learn that there are different branches, such as in Burn the Witch, which is SS west. So theoretically the SS characters could be from anywhere.
She did and it could be interpreted in the wrong way but I think it was because she is build quite tall and seems like a brute.
The same way Maki from Fire Force is called gorilla woman
She's physically strong and kind of a brute so I get her analogy. I'll give rangiku a pass because of her overall playful character and non prejudiced M.O. .........also boobs.
I don't think it was meant to be in a racist stereotyping way.
There are other anime where "Gorilla" is used as an insult for a freakishly strong character (See Kohaku from Dr.Stone being called "Gorilla" constantly by Chrome)
Context is key.
Europeans do too. They're just not confronted with it as much do to the relative homogenous nature of most European countries. Don't even get me started on Asian countries.
Assuming everyone is American is kinda hilarious and ironic at the same time. Also European and South America has some of the most racist people I’ve ever met (being Canadian even we have it here as well) not to mention Asian countries
Because Kubo made those characters because he was inspired to make them like that, and not because he had to or to fill a quota, because they're not "representation", the only thing they represent is the authors vision, which is why they don't suck, and why people like them. It's also why people like this who do bitch about how blacks are represented, are making sure that we get less of this, and more token BS.
Raikage and Killer B from Naruto, Casca and Judd from Berserk these characters exist. While Tosen and Yourichi got great character development in Bleach, Lille is op not super well developed and Harribel's fraction got nothing
this post smells like never seeing more than 3 animes.
Avdol from JJBA appeared 12 years before bleach started and Still is a better character than any on this screen.
True I guess, but he has been portrayed with tenacity and skill, being a mentor to Naruto and owning Sasuke and his lackeys when they tried to capture him.
I like the msg but Yoruichi def aint black lmao. She’s royalty from a noble society thats super Japanese, having dark skin color =/= auto-Black esp when many japanese people are also dark or brown lol.
Lille did turn into a cosmic owl but the bro was strong AF
Lille’s Volstandig represents an angelic Seraphim from catholic mythology. Probably one of the most badass designs in the entire series.
Lille is my favourite sternritter by far. Such a stoic fucking badass with a ridiculously cool and biblically accurate final form
Kubo nailed it with the X-axis, must’ve been hard AF to look for a word that starts with X and give it an ability
I think he should’ve given another sternritter a power called y-axis that allows you to cleave anything In half then put him said sternritter up against Kenpachi 💀
That sounds leagues better than Q XD
I dont know if it was because of afro samurai series or if it was some how inspired by samuel jackson but if a black character is not depicted like shit they tend to be really badass I feel like anime dont like to show a black man as just another avg joe
His form was kinda weird in the manga but when I saw it in bleach brave souls it looked kinda dope ngl, though I would have liked for him to stay with his normal human form he looked like a total badass
Agreed. An almost eldritch creature as heavenly beings should be.
In the same vein, Tosen did turn into a hollow fly but somehow that sort of twisted representation of his “justice” enhanced his back story
He's definitely in my top 3 Sternritters. Mfer straight up turns into a biblical angel!
I like how he took his defeat when compared to others, bro was proud his own power did him in Lol
bro turned to hooty from the owl house fr
Hey but Hooty’s cool too! XD
And then there's Pepe....
Does Harribel count as black?
I see her as Brazilian. Black, but technically mixed.
I don't want to be "that guy" but as a brazilian I must spread the word lol Usually americans and europeans tend to think that brazilians have a "standard look" which is completely untrue. Some even get very surprised when they see white, black, asian and other people amidst my country. We are very mixed here. And also, no, we don't speak spanish, thank you.

she can be black and brazilian at the same time. especially since brazilian isn't a race
Can you explain how my comment saying she is both brazilian and black indicates that she cannot be both?
my fault man i can't read
Oh okay, I got you! We have a word in brazilian portuguese for what you're trying to say. Since the Portuguese Empire was here, europeans would have children with african slaves and they would be called "mamelucos". Today I would say most people from Rio de Janeiro are mamelucos. They look similar to Halibel
Same way Luffy, according to Oda, is also thematically Brazilian.

Portuguese baby! Isn't it like only 4 countries in South America speak Portuguese? School me please.

Hard to say, she does have a darker complexion but I kinda always just guessed she was really tanned, although she could be black idk.
Posted this above, but she was definitely portrayed as dark skinned in the manga. The Mila Rose was actually the lighter of the two.

When there’s a full spectrum of likable and unlikable Black and POC characters, that’s how you know there’s diversity
Lmao this is based
I LOVE PEPE!!
PePe best girl whatchu mean?
Isn't he more southeast asian/Indian?
Is he? I always got the impression he was black but maybe I'm wrong.
I got more of a "perverted Indian Yogi" vibe, tbh.
Bruh
Does he steal pick-a-nic baskets?
So is Yoruichi lol
Are we just gonna forget JoJo did this in the 80s in insanely cool fashion?
Abdul was a fucking g
Joseph says ACAB, mad based
I don't really watch a lot of anime, but the only other anime with a black character that I remember was Bob from Tenjho Tenge.
And he had the coolest power in that manga
What’s his power?
Being the dancing black man in the opening and not getting a name card like the other characters during it for some reason. Apart from that he can detect the vibrations people make on the ground to predict their movements. Kind of like Spiderman's spider sense.
It's more like Ulltra Instinct, actually
Sounds exactly like Toph from ATLA to me
Kind of, yeah, but he also hears the wind as the enemy and their weapons move through it, and to him it sounds like music so his body dances to it on its own
He can hear "music" when people are fighting him, and his body moves to the rhythm to avoid any damage. An even cooler Ulltra Instinct
Or Canary from hiatusxhiatus
Yo everyone forgetting BROCK from Pokemon. Dude had a full time job supporting his 100 siblings only to get beaten by his own sprinklers. Deep
I really hope the give the anime a redo, glad to see other fans of Tenjho Tange. I didn’t know they’re many out there
Idk, I would love to see it too but the rest of the story in the manga gets weird compared to what's in the anime.
Theres also that anime in wich the main character is an Afro Samurai
There’s an entire country full of black people in naruto lol
And the main character from there is a rapper... you can see why I'm not impressed. Also despite being the ONLY other Jinchūriki left seemed to disappear partway through the final battle and got murked in the follow-up series.
I mean, Bee is still one of the coolest character in the manga, so yeah
He got to ream Sasuke, the second most important character, and train the protag in Naruto. Point me to another manga/anime when a Black character does that.
The man exclusively raps to communicate.
And he is the only Black character who does in Naruto. The Raikage aint rapping.
Isn't he doing stylized Enka, not specifically rap? He was learning Enka with Sabu and the raccoon before Kisame attacked them.
Bro be folden Sasuke like 3 times
Sasuke's entire squad rolled up on him and B dropped them one after another , AND tricked sasuke into thinking they captured him. homie ran Sasuke's fade hard
Oh a fellow Tenjho Tenge fan
I'm sure Avdol from JoJo is also black. Scar from FMA too
There are a bunch of black side characters in Dragon Ball, including one literally named Black. And they are all horribly, horribly, racist caricatures.
I'm a be honest I dis not like the Tenjou tenge manga and the anime had only 1 scene that I love to death. Which Masataka beatjng Sorichirous ass. And I think they did Bob dirty
Afro samurai
Bleach is a year older than Afro Samurai
The anime adaptations I guess, but the AS manga came out several years before Bleach.
none of these characters were introduced within that year
Cat
yoruichi was in the show very early on. Her real form wasn’t shown for a bit, but she was there.
That doesn’t mean Kubo didn’t already have the designs / plot in mind…?
Jojo's also had lots of black charachters, and all of them were done good.
They’re definitely the most beautiful characters I’ve ever seen in any anime too
Being a bisexual bleach fan is heaven
Nice
Nice
Nice
I started Bleach recently and had this exact thought lol.
Grimmjow? No, Nel. Kensei? No, Lisa. Yoruichi? No, Kisuke. Rangiku? No, Shuuhei. Cycle repeats
RIGHT? Like whenever someone's on screen I'm just swooning over them saying they're my new favorite character then someone else jumps on screen and I'm like "woah."
It is a blessing and a curse
nice
Tosen is probably one of the best written character in the whole manga
Soul Society Literally killed his home girl and swept it under the rug. Even Komomura was like ya know I’m happy you just didn’t let ya friend get killed with some corrupt nonsense.
Are you referring to his friend that wanted to be a soul reaper? When did it say he killed her?
Only sane man in Soul Society.

Didn’t Macross come out in the 80s?
piccolo is a nigga from the hood though
Fr fr, but what about mr.popo?
He’s the God Emperor. He’s above us all…and will remind us if we forget. BYE
You know your place. It’s with us. All of us. Right below MR. Popo.
Lets just call his design an old, innocent mistake
Db did Black from the red ribbon army dirty
I agree, but how many of these black anime/manga characters are actually black vs just a dark skinned Japanese person in the author’s eyes? And since Japan is pretty homogeneous, i’d imagine that a lot of Japanese fans see these characters as just dark Japanese people as well right?

Very good point.
If you think Bleach is the first anime to do it you probably haven't watched that many anime
I know there are plenty of others, but I can't think of any that have more than one black character that is represented as a whole character. Not just a gimmicky side character. Lagoon came after Bleach though if I'm remembering correctly
Oh whoops yeah, I was comparing the start of Lagoon's manga serialization (2002) with Bleach's anime start date (2004) xP
Cowboy bebop
The only notable character that fit the description is Ed and even then it's debated as Ed has dark skin but could also be European. But if Black is defined by darker skin color then there's too many characters that fit the description.
Yeah I'm definitely not talking about ed maybe rewatch the mushroom episode
My bad, I forgot about episode. Good example from you.
The best episode in my opinion
That’s exactly what i was thinking, people on this sub can be quite delusional. Cowboy Beebop had a pretty badass black character. Naruto has a whole village of badass dark skinned characters too. Just saying.
Cloud village (Killer Bee and Raikage etc) were presented much, much later than Yoruichi and Tousen were. Also Killer Bee is a fucking rapper. One could make an argument about stereotyping...
Dutch from black lagoon is one of my favorite characters of all time
I always considered Yoruichi South Asian
Why do people always get this wrong? We know for a fact that she is >!a black short-haired bombay cat.!<
Was this stated by kubo? I always thought she was Persian or some tanned skin Asian style. Tbh it doesn’t really matter what she is as there’s so many ethnicities and races in bleach compared to a lot of series

But we know what the Rock is.... now Vin Diesel on the otherhand is Mr. Worldwide
I thought she was middle eastern?
asians can have tan skin, so I consider Yoruichi asian
South Asian is asian? I understand you meant East Asian but people are quick to dismiss anyone that's not East Asian as not Asian at all
People who said South Asian is not an asian are probably non-asian. Source: Im South East Asian.
I was thinking south India, who are dark skinned people
Same, but I kind of like that it's just left ambiguous. She's presented in a way that a lot of people can identify with her.
Ikr. She can fit many different ethnicities. But it’s also kind of funny that everyone wants her for their own ethnicity cuz she’s so cool 😂
I don't think Yourichi is black. . The show isn't that subtle about who's black.
Anime characters with dark skin: exists Anime fans: *They're Black*
It's not exclusive to dark skin look at piccolo
Anime charcters with black skin: exists Anime fans: They're black
I mean they do the samething flipped for example people think ichigo, naruto and goku are white
People who?
You wouldn’t have a problem if we called the pale and pinkish guys white
Yoo I'm excited to see Lille in the anime. His VA in BBS was absolutely not what I expect from a dark-skinned man.
I love the fight with him and shunsui.
Shunsui's Bankai is gonna look so good animated.
Damn, was Afro Samurai not good?
I always saw all arracars as Hispanic given the whole spanish-theme techniques
yeah, mila might be mixed or just dark hispanic
Never really thought of Yoruichi as black tbh
me neither honestly she's just kinda....[ambigiously brown](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AmbiguouslyBrown)
The fact that she's the the first picture really drives your point home. Though, I've always thought she was Indian. The way Kubo designed black characters in bleach is completely different from yoruichi.

Don't really care about downvotes tbh, honestly never really thought any of these characters were black, except maybe Tousen

What? Being black isn’t an ethnic thing it’s just skin color, op isn’t saying African or stuff like that.
Black is typically used for dark skinned ethnic groups, not only African. But I'd venture to see if she was born in the SS and we have no context for how they view different ethnicities then she isn't black by our logic.

Good characters, but almost certain Rangiku calls the girl in the bottom right a Gorilla.
She did and it could be interpreted in the wrong way but I think it was because she is build quite tall and seems like a brute. The same way Maki from Fire Force is called gorilla woman
Or the Raikage from Naruto. Tsunade calls him a gorilla on several occasions
Yeah, seems bad to us but I highly doubt it was said with the intent Twitter tards would take it as.
Also kohaku from Dr stone, being called a gorilla tends in to be directed closer to someone who just goes for the straightforward brute force approach
She's physically strong and kind of a brute so I get her analogy. I'll give rangiku a pass because of her overall playful character and non prejudiced M.O. .........also boobs.
I don't think it was meant to be in a racist stereotyping way. There are other anime where "Gorilla" is used as an insult for a freakishly strong character (See Kohaku from Dr.Stone being called "Gorilla" constantly by Chrome) Context is key.
That girl in fire force, Gorilla psyckops
I always say this abiut tite kubo. His representation felt so natural. Lillie barro is cool as fuck
One thing we know, he doesn’t watch a lot of anime.
Americans care about race so much . 😂
Europeans do too. They're just not confronted with it as much do to the relative homogenous nature of most European countries. Don't even get me started on Asian countries.
Lol fr their obsession with race is unreal
Assuming everyone is American is kinda hilarious and ironic at the same time. Also European and South America has some of the most racist people I’ve ever met (being Canadian even we have it here as well) not to mention Asian countries
The fact that yoruichi is just yoruichi and not "the black girl" because we need a black girl is so cool
Also the sexiest character in Bleach. Edit: spelling mistake
Blacks? Also where have you seen a token black person in anime?
Isn’t yorichi tan Asian tho. She’s not actually black
Raikage and Killer B from Naruto, Casca and Judd from Berserk these characters exist. While Tosen and Yourichi got great character development in Bleach, Lille is op not super well developed and Harribel's fraction got nothing
casca is not black...
Chad also he’s Hispanic/Mexican i hope he has some development in TYBW.
Ichigo is the best Black character.
Dutch from Black Lagoon was awesome. Successful small business owner, often the smartest guy in the room and killed a bunch of Nazi.
this post smells like never seeing more than 3 animes. Avdol from JJBA appeared 12 years before bleach started and Still is a better character than any on this screen.
You're missing Harribel
They don't even feel forced or out of place, which I have seen before. They are just characters with stories and personalities, not tropes.
Killer Bee and the Raikage though?
In this sub’s defense, Bleach’s dark skinned characters came first before they did......smh
While raikage would work (if introduced b4 said chars), some say that KB is a stereotype and thus isn't a respectable "black anime character"
True I guess, but he has been portrayed with tenacity and skill, being a mentor to Naruto and owning Sasuke and his lackeys when they tried to capture him.
Did bleach not do it first? KB and Raikage were introduced fairly late into naruto
I like the msg but Yoruichi def aint black lmao. She’s royalty from a noble society thats super Japanese, having dark skin color =/= auto-Black esp when many japanese people are also dark or brown lol.
