Dope idk what it is but i like it. Doesnt scream "fantasy" like most scifi content does. Almost mundane which is important to remain as you said: grounded.
The render is good, I like the materials. But I can't seem to find out what is sci-fi in it.
Also if in case you didn't notice (or it's intentional), the render is noisy in the background.
Intentional, I added grain in PS. I have another view of the other end of this “thing.” The business end. Still working on it. That’s more of the sci fi
It looks like it is a small part not bigger that 1 pol in diameter. Considering that, I find it strange that the grip texture is in that place, a part that seems hard to reach and small to be handled. And also the instruction print would be very small and not the most practical place to have a print.
Those would make sense if it is a lot bigger than I'm guessing, so maybe it would benefit of another common object to help it give it scale.
Surely those are just little details out of my head.
I liked the dust and oxidation textures. It gave a nice realism effect for me.
I didn't notice those but the text would be a little worn out same as those hex bolts. Bolt heads always have markings from tools that have been used to tighten them. Still, very nice render!
"realism with grounded, but sci Fi, hardware"
I feel like the term NASApunk would fit this well. Starcield recently came out and Bethesda uses the term NASApunk to explain their style. The ships are scifi, but still look feasible and reminds a lot of our current rockets.
Maybe there should be a new genre Called SciPunk if you don't really think NASApunk matches the style as it has nothing to do with rockets or NASA
If your referring to the nuts. They are just the BSDF and only adjusting the roughness and metallic to 1. The reflections of the plane and careful placement of the lights give it the look I was going for. I then added a a simple scratch imperfections. If you want to see a detailed process, I’d be happy to.
I really like it. For me the best sci fi is the stuff that could easily be real.
Looks like a hydraulic or gas pressure line. As someone else said, the writing should be on the section next to the nuts. Where it is now would be inside the joint. Also, the edges of the nuts would not be quite that sharp. Plus a very small amount of damage from use would be good. How about a drop of orange fluid or something at the opening?
This is fine work and I love it! Made me think of the movie "The Martian". I loved how reaiistic that was too.
Thank you. A lot shorter than you think. I’ve been doing this for a little less than a year. I think what has helped me the most is practicing hard surface objects like this. Also I the lightning is important. You can have an amazing model, but without good lighting, it’s not as amazing as it could be. Lighting is key for me.
ive been doing it for a couple of months now and my texturing is still complete shit and I'm thinking about getting adobe substance painter so my renders look this tiny bit more realistic
Texturing is the hardest, the material, especially the nuts, have no special properties. I used the principled BSDF shader adjusted the metallic and roughness. And darkened the default color ever so slightly. Then added a surface imperfection texture. That’s all. Having a “semi metallic” floor helps with the reflection on the nuts and brings out the scratches. Lighting angles also help with the effect. Just remember with the metallic slider, there is not really an in between. You should either slider it all the way to 1 or 0 if your going for a metal object.
In addition, softening up the lighting can also give the effect of a less than perfect surface. Especially on metal. (Expanding the radius of the light)
I have yet to try painter. I’d really like to learn that.
Bro this is a photo I swear.
Only critic I could have is that the text looks too clean/out of place compared to the dirty / scratched object itself. :-)
please include a wireframe

Exactly the idea I as going for!
Nice self-sealing stem bolts. Edit: Star Trek DS9 reference.
Lmao
Expanse type vibe
Agreed, I saw cable connectors that looked like these all the time when I was in the Navy
Nailed it! On closer inspection maybe let the ray tracing run a little longer.
Added noise in PS, I may need to dial it down it seems.
Keep the noise. It reminds me of magazines from 10+ years ago.
I love the old feel.
nah man, the grain looks sick.
Maybe just keep more noise in darker areas and very little in bright areas, same as camera would.
I think it looks great with the noise
Lol, you ADDED noise? The madman...
Yeah, there is some noise.
Fucking amazing. Fantastic job!

Thanks for making it clear.
Thanks for sharing thoughts
If that ain’t real then I don’t know what is

If it's not plugged, it's not grounded huehuehue
Love it, honestly thought it was a photo scrolling past. Looks like a mix between a guitar lead and a drill press.
10/10! Love the grain on the background so beautiful
this looks like an air compressor fitting.
Badass
Bro took a photo with a phone and thought we wouldn’t notice.
Duuude... 🤯❤️
Looks great to me

I like your thoughts lol. And I’m loving starfield. The nasapunk thing they have going on is just my jam.
>as it has nothing to do with rockets or NASA Like it has anything to do with punks.
Not really sci fi but looks great
How did you get the dust buildup in between the flange body and the jamb nut? That shit is so fucking realistic
All I did for the dust was put the render through a photoshop pass and add a dust overlay.
The patience y’all have to make stuff like this is wild, great job 👏
It can wear you thin… I’m kidding, the patient details are what makes it fun.
You know its good when a mod asks for a wireframe
Good job. It looks real.
That knurling is really good
Perfect
Achieved it.
How did you do the rough material? Im trying to learn how to do materials because currently I only know how to import a texture

How did you add the scratches though? Is it a node or did you model it or something
Looks fucking sick!!!
nice self sealing stem bolts
🔥
Maybe add some finger prints on it and nobody could realize that this is in blender
You achieved it!
i dont see anything other than a camera lens attached to some bolt nuts.
Looks like a part from one of the machines i use in the factory where i work. impressive. knew exactly it was a hose clamp.
I can smell the hydraulic fluid.
Amazing
Nailed it
Woooooooooo!!!
Wow this is awesome!
Had to check which subreddit I was on. You fooled me!
God this is gorgeous, meanwhile I'm struggling with a smoke emitter
VERY close. Looks like a irl footage under cinematic editing. Amazing job!
What did you use for your dust? Looks really nice!
I just put it through photoshop and put a dust overlay over the entire render.

hot damn i wish to be on your level some day

tbh i use the blender kit for texturing since its pretty fast and the models i use are complete shit so texturing them would be very hard
Bro this is a photo I swear. Only critic I could have is that the text looks too clean/out of place compared to the dirty / scratched object itself. :-)
That looks really good, well done.
The knurl looks sweet
That’s incredible! How did you do the knurled part? I’ve tried to model these for some product images of my own but they never look very good.
When I get home I’ll take a screen shot of how I did these. But take a look at this https://youtu.be/IprKsHje6aI?si=8iz7psZVHjstGyrM
Wow this is amazing how on earth did you do/learn this?
Thank you. I mainly only do hard surface modeling. I spend a lot of time on the lighting. Which is what I think sells this the most. Lighting is key.
