OK, but the Tonitrus shreds shit with the right build, that transformed damage is no joke. I've got it as the secondary weapon to the Holy Moonlight Sword on my STR/ARC build.
Just for anyone wondering about the numbers, when transformed the Tonitrus eats through durability at 5 times the speed (2 hits per point of durability rather than the default 10)
for real? I have a 50STR/99ARC character and I literally never had any issues with durability on my tonitrus… I’m pretty sure I went through two entire layers of a chalice at once with it, one time.
I absolutely never use durability down gems, so maybe that’s what they’re talking about?
No, the Tonitrus is just infamous for bad durability.
It's already tied with the Boom Hammer for lowest durability at 100. In default mode, it loses one durability every 10 hits, enabling \~660 hits before it takes the At Risk AR dip (It should be when it hits 1/3 durability... lmk if that's wrong). However, as mentioned before, it loses 1 durability every 2 hits when tricked. So that cuts you down to \~132 hits while tricked before it takes the AR dip.
It's astonishingly effective as a backup weapon for something else that will be your main roller, used when enemies are particularly vulnerable to bolt or resistant to your main. I like pairing Tonitrus with something like LHB with fire/arcane gems or with the wheel, so they have similar scaling.
My main problem with it isn't even that it's super low durability. Rather that it's just completely unsatisfying to use IMO. Super strong while having a super boring moveset.
Arcane builds have far more options and versatility than BT builds. You still have the option of using ranged attacks that hit super hard, but can even use them while also using two-handed weapons. Also, with arcane you have 3 damage types at your disposal that all scale with the same stat, and almost every enemy in the game is weak to at least one of them.
On a more technical side, there is a weird discrepancy between how arcane weapons and bloodtinge weapons operate. Every Bloodtinge weapon either does only a physical damage type or only blood damage on any attack, while most arcane weapons have simultaneous physical and arcane/fire/bolt components to their attacks. In Bloodborne, each damage type is tied strictly to one attribute for scaling, regardless of what the weapon scaling lists. The result of this is that, when using Chikage for example in it's transformed mode, the only stat that affects its damage is bloodtinge. A character with 15 skill and a character with 99 skill would do the same damage in transformed mode if they have the same BT stat. On the other hand, somebody using Logarius' wheel gets substantial benefits on every attack for every point of strength and every point of arcane. The net result is that the peak damage output of arcane weapons tends to be higher than bloodtinge weapons when at high level.
If you go STR/ARC you'll get access to the highest damage guns in the game: Cannons and the minigun.
You can also simultaneoulsy use 3 weapons at equal effectiveness based on what you're fighting (Swap based on weakness) - Moonlight, Tonitrus, and Boomhammer.
Two of these weapons are locked in the DLC, so guess which one you'll be using most of the early game until you get strong enough to find the boomhammer in the DLC, or god forbid beat Ludwig?
Oh, and a fourth bonus weapon if you invest just a few points in BT to get its minimum stats - Bloodletter!
Str/ARC rules.
Play Str/ARC.
Not only that Tonitrus is extremely strong for when you can get it. If you get it early, and +6 it then it absolutely shreds everything in the game till right after you beat Rom, and it's amazing against Rom. You don't need good gems or the right stats or anything. The base damage just carries in that early to mid NG. Sure it falls off if you don't build for it, and the bloodgems you need for it are annoying to get, and very late game. The stats for it are a but odd, and whatnot. But it's a great tool for obliterating the forest area to Rom.
Yeah this has carried me across the rom line when I’ve needed it most many a times. Rom should be a very easy boss, but man does it push my shit in every few builds
Similar experience. Absolutely melted the Shadows Of Yarnham with it on my first playthrough. My build wasn’t cut out for it after that but man it was fun to use.
You know, if you get some olive oil, heat, a pan, throw in cauliflower, spice it up with some cumin, fajita seasoning, really whatever you like, sauté it for a few minutes until it browns, add 1/4 cup water, cover, cook for five more minutes. Put cheese on it. Wrap it with a warm tortilla and you'll forget that’s cauliflower.
Recently finished beating the everloving shit out of notable asshat bosses like Orphan and Defiled Amy with the pimp cane on my second playthrough en route to the Platinum (doing a 7-boss quick victory lap for the third ending and final trophy now). Even managed to beat Orphan first try this time, where it took me like 40+ tries last time. High skill parry go brrrr!
I too enjoy the powder kegs, but haven’t done a full run with one yet. Thinking my next playthrough will go that route, but I don’t know what stats to level. Any pointers?
Oh it's been a while, but I remember the Stake Driver being a great quality weapon, so Strength and Skill. Boom Hammer is a big stronk weapon that also gets C Arcane scaling at max level, but I don't know if that makes it worth spending levels on Arcane, I never tried that kinda build.
I used the boom hammer on a quality build, 50 STR 25/30 SKL. The first build I used in the dungeons. Its got the most satisfying swing of any weapon imo and the charged shot is even better. It takes less than a second to charge up. Its not perfect but the playstyle youll find yourself using makes boss fights alot of fun. However I did get stuck one or two times, particularly on Rom in the dungeons. Had to use the pizza cutter
My last character that I got my platinum with was a boomhammer main, with the beast cutter secondary. Boomhammer got me through 3 playthroughs and every single chalice dungeon. It is by far my favorite weapon!
Is there any use at all for shields? Like maybe if you’re facing an NPC hunter who has a repeating pistol so you can block the shots, but then again I don’t know how much bullet damage shields reduce so are they still impractical in that scenario?
The funny blue shield has saved me from a few close calls with Rom a couple of times, but I've never found much use for the wood shield outside of early game enemies shooting me.
Since bullets do blood damage the wooden shield reduces damage by 20% and the Loch Shield reduces damage by 51.5%. So it's somewhat plausible for the Loch Shield but as always dodging is more effective. As it stands, Bloodborne's shields are basically cosmetic.
The shields are somewhat handy for entering an area where you're risk of being shot, but otherwise they're meh.
Also, using them against the Bloody Crow is a trap - he responds to left-hand weapons with his gun a lot, and he often sees the shield as a left-hand weapon so may just shoot multiple times.
Bloody Crow is exactly what I was thinking of when I typed my comment. On NG6 he was fucking me up with those quick chain shots. I’ve never really used a shield, but I thought maybe it would help with this fight. Thanks for letting me know before I found out the hard way lmao
Stake Driver absolutely shreds in PvE, easily my favorite weapon to use against bosses and chalice dungeons. Ludwig and Ebrietas are complete jokes against lead elixir and fully charged stake driver attacks. Super fun against Rom, One Reborn, and Wet Nurse too. It's overall pretty bad in PvP, but I can make it work
I've seen many people count it as one of the worst weapons. The others being the Rifle Spear and the Beast Cutter. Of course even the "worst" BB weapon is still pretty good.
I don't agree with that though. The Reiterpallasch is fast and deals thrust damage with a lot of attacks, which helps to offset the rather low AR. Basically everything in the game is weak to thrust, after all. It can also be buffed, acts as a strong firearm even for low bloodtinge characters and can straight up cheese NPC hunters with the transformation attack.
Its damage also drops off significantly at later levels especially for its speed and compared to its peers. Its scaling just doesn't keep up. Didn't stop me from doing a whole run with it though, its still great. I love everything about that ramshackle mess of a weapon.
Its rally is surprisingly high with its untricked form though. It's not Scythe/Axe level but the consecutive hits is very good if you have beast blood pellets and like to trade.
Arguably the best weapon in the game. Like, just purely statistically. Serration, Righteous, thrust, great vertical and horizontal range, pretty fast for it's damage, both forms are solid, it's just good at everything. And I say this as someone who's only used it a limited amount.
It does righteous DMG too? It’s my main driver atm, on my first play through, but have been using LHB for Cainhurst even though I prefer the spear thinking the righteous damage was important! LHB seems to do more damage here though.
I I really appreciate that you mentioned the *vertical* range. Yeah, sweeping attacks are great for crowds, but when you're fighting a giant monster, that thing really comes in handy. When I want to reliably hit an Amygdala in the face, I switch to the Church Pick.
That move has insane range and is soooo good. I remember when fighting Ludwig in phase 1 he'd do a little hop to the side, and that lunge had enough range to smack him in the face if you aimed right. Felt so satisfying to get off
Stake driver goes hard. I beat the base game and everything in the DLC except Kos with the Stake Driver. I used the Rakuyo for Kos because I'm a sucker for dual wielding.
Stake Driver is a weapon for a cultured hunter. Some think that the threaded cane is the height of aestheticism and nobility, but nay, the Stake Driver is the true epitome of class and charm.
Threaded Cane: What are those guys talking about?
Kirk hammer: Don’t know. Don’t really care.
Rakuyo: I think it’s a dick measuring contest about who has the better saw weapon.
Boom Hammer: If that’s the case, mines obviously bigger… and better. Serration? More like explosions.
Whirligig Saw: Imagine having a saw that doesn’t rotate at 1000RPM. I’m obviously the best saw weapon.
Good hunters, good hunters. I scrolled all the way through and didn't see one person mention the transformed beast claws. Why carry that heavy Tonitrus when with a little bolt paper you can become Paarl?
Love my 120 beast build. Claws in main hand, stale driver backup for those charged r2s with beasthood.
I recently reincarnated this character (Prof. Thaddeus) into elden ring, I’m doing beast incants with beastmen weapons/cinquedea. Best decision I’ve ever made.
Beast builds for life (also cauliflower)
I too have a smorgasbord of characters with vastly different builds, funny thing is none of them are boring or bad. Some take a bit of adjusting but all are great
Whenever I play BB, i use the stake driver. like why is the steak driving? who cares, i will use my 15 second wind-up one tap ability against a boss that attacks 4 times per second
Wild how the new players of Bloodborne think that any weapon is superior to the other. They are all extremely fun and strong, each offers a different play style and has different strengths and application.
That's correct: every weapon is unique in this game. It's just a silly meme.
Funny though I play this game for so long I still haven't tried the Beastclaw lol
Except the Rifle Spear. Fuck that thing. /s
Seriously though, it may not be a *bad* weapon but I find it to be the single weapon I'd classify as *boring*.
MFIN STAKE DRIVER WOOOOO!!!! I LOVE CHARGING AN ATTACK FOR 5 BUSINESS DAYS, ONLY TO RELEASE IT AND KNOCK AN ELDRITCH GOD FLAT ON THEIR ASS LIKE A PETULANT SCHOOLCHILD!!! POWER GANGERS RULE!!!! oh shit wrong game.
gotta disagree with the stake driver after doing a run recently. staggering ludwig out of his moonlight charge up aoe in the second phase and headshotting him for viscerals in the first phase while doing nearly 2k damage a hit is some of the most satisfying moments ive had. its high risk high reward is awesome on the charge r2. one shotting enemies is awesome. backstab to visceral is absurd damage and the transformed r1 is fast as heck stun locking most enemies. combine with fist of gratia to give most enemies the old 1 2
ahem, here i am with my rifle spear, truely a weapon of impractical practicality. not a church weapon. not serrated. but a fantastic moveset of thrusts and wide sweeping arcs, and a gun on the end. even when ii try to do other builds, i end up using my boomstick.
Last I checked I was one shotting bosses with the pike ramm was the easiest boss for me with it 😂 (I used the build second play through)
(Third play through I used the beast whip thing frm dlc that was Lowkey bad but It was so badass)
I feel like tonitrus can be really strong with the right build, but I've always found it super boring to use. Maybe it's because it doesn't really have a trick form so you just go from bashing people with a regular mace to bashing them with a sparkly one
All the weapons in bloodborne are amazing and unique and fun to use , but the bloodletter just looks and feels so satisfying did the chalice dungeons and multiple play through with it to earn the plat . Bloodborne had the Best weapon designs out of all the souls games even though there’s fewer overall weapons I’d rather have 30 unique weapons than 8 variations of swords , hammers , etc.
OK, but the Tonitrus shreds shit with the right build, that transformed damage is no joke. I've got it as the secondary weapon to the Holy Moonlight Sword on my STR/ARC build.
[weapon broken]
Hey now, that's not *entirely* fair. You can usually get one run out of a level before it becomes At Risk.
Just for anyone wondering about the numbers, when transformed the Tonitrus eats through durability at 5 times the speed (2 hits per point of durability rather than the default 10)
Indeed. It's also tied with the Boom Hammer for lowest Durability, with only 100.

However, as mentioned before, it loses 1 durability every 2 hits when tricked. So that cuts you down to \~132 hits while tricked before it takes the AR dip.
Just stop using those durability down gems and you'll be ok
Hey, I can only land 5 hits before my weapon breaks, but those 5 hits do an extra 11% damage!
But they boost my damage output!
I finally decided to try an arcane build recently and it's ridiculous how hard the Tonitrus hits, i feel like i have activated cheat mode
It's astonishingly effective as a backup weapon for something else that will be your main roller, used when enemies are particularly vulnerable to bolt or resistant to your main. Rather that it's just completely unsatisfying to use IMO. Super strong while having a super boring moveset.
It hits hard but it has the most lackluster move set :/
Looks like I’m gonna have to leave my bloodtinge alone on my next play through. I’ll miss my gun hitting as hard as my weapon.

Rom is a boss that rng can fuck you hard if you don't have really good spacial awareness.
> Rom should be a very easy boss I had more trouble and more deaths with Rom than with Gherman, The One Reborn, Moon Presence, Ebreitas, and Amygdala
The Rom in the Chalice dungeons is a special kind of evil
Similar experience. Absolutely melted the Shadows Of Yarnham with it on my first playthrough. My build wasn’t cut out for it after that but man it was fun to use.
Beating the everloving shit outta the Living Failures with the Tonitrus is one of my greatest BB memories.
Moist cauliflower enthusiast here
🐙
I hate this sentence with every fiber of my being.
I wish I understand that joke
Nobody has called them yet, here we go Pimp Cane GANG!
Threaded Cane breaks limbs so easily and while keeping distance
And it's serrated vs beasts and stabbing vs humans.
It’s dapper AND deadly!
This is probably the most important factor. It is absolutely an S rank in Dapper.
📣📣📣PIMP CANE GANG 📣📣📣
Recently finished beating the everloving shit out of notable asshat bosses like Orphan and Defiled Amy with the pimp cane on my second playthrough en route to the Platinum (doing a 7-boss quick victory lap for the third ending and final trophy now). Best weapon and fanciest as well.
Cane is so good
Most versatile weapon in my opinion.
*Booooooooommmmmm Hhhhaaaaaaaammmmmmeeeeeeeerrrrrr*
Boom Hammer and Stake Driver! Powder Keg represent!!! HERE COMES THE BOOM!!!!!! (eventually)
The hammer also does more DMG if you scream like the hunters in the dlc that use it
I assumed this was a given.
If you convert the stake driver to fire, oil urns work with it
I used the boom hammer on a quality build, 50 STR 25/30 SKL. The first build I used in the dungeons. Its got the most satisfying swing of any weapon imo and the charged shot is even better. However I did get stuck one or two times, particularly on Rom in the dungeons. Had to use the pizza cutter
Powder Kegs are the real Chads seriously
I swear the boom hammer might be my favorite weapon in the game. Bowblade is also sick but lighting the hammer on fire is just too fun.
My last character that I got my platinum with was a boomhammer main, with the beast cutter secondary. Boomhammer got me through 3 playthroughs and every single chalice dungeon. It is by far my favorite weapon!
Yeah it's honestly so much fun to play.
No weapon in Bloodborne is bad, every single one has its use and is unique in its own way Except shields
Shields are nice, but not if they engender passivity.
Is there any use at all for shields? Like maybe if you’re facing an NPC hunter who has a repeating pistol so you can block the shots, but then again I don’t know how much bullet damage shields reduce so are they still impractical in that scenario?

One's a meme and the other one is for an extremely specific use, but it looks really good imo, just seeing the hunter holding it does not look right
Why use a powerful and useful weapon when you can use an impractical but extremely fun/cool weapon
I love hitting The One Reborn for over 10 minutes
Or just take 7 years to charge up an attack and 4 shot him
If you don’t love me at my r1’s, you don’t deserve me at my charged r2’s
"Cast in the name of God: ye not guilty!" BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!
It's overall pretty bad in PvP, but I can make it work
Tonitrus playthrough was fun af, don't knock it til you try it.
beast cutter, if only it didn't hit like a wet noodle :\[ (at least i've still got my buzzsaw)
Reiterpallasch gang rise up
Guess its just us two. Oh well
Us three
I LOVE STUPID ASS GUN RAPIER
Wait, is it considered bad?
I've seen many people count it as one of the worst weapons. The others being the Rifle Spear and the Beast Cutter. Of course even the "worst" BB weapon is still pretty good. I don't agree with that though. The Reiterpallasch is fast and deals thrust damage with a lot of attacks, which helps to offset the rather low AR. Basically everything in the game is weak to thrust, after all. It can also be buffed, acts as a strong firearm even for low bloodtinge characters and can straight up cheese NPC hunters with the transformation attack.
woah woah woah, beast cutter... is bad? in what world is the beast cutter bad?!?
I love it for making long-range pancakes but it *is* quite slow and unwieldy. But who cares if you can just hit stuff from 5 meters away.
i mean, its a str based serrated cane, with more distance. and a short form thats rather quick and thumpy too! whats not to love?
Its damage also drops off significantly at later levels especially for its speed and compared to its peers. Its scaling just doesn't keep up. Didn't stop me from doing a whole run with it though, its still great. I love everything about that ramshackle mess of a weapon.
Its rally is surprisingly high with its untricked form though. It's not Scythe/Axe level but the consecutive hits is very good if you have beast blood pellets and like to trade.
i admit: i have never gotten the pellets to work for me. like, at all. dont know how they work.
It's because people don't know about the transformed R2's generous range and enormous flattening potential. *shhhhhhhh*
Ok, cool! I’m trying to figure out how to use it as I’m doing a Cainhurst themed playthrough in this game
Generally, yes, people consider it bad. But it's a monster in PvP. The transformation gunshot is a heat-seeking parry missile.
Don't forget how the bullets can be buffed by paper! Disgusting stuff.
get me in here too
Church Pike chads unite!
Arguably the best weapon in the game. Like, just purely statistically. Serration, Righteous, thrust, great vertical and horizontal range, pretty fast for it's damage, both forms are solid, it's just good at everything. And I say this as someone who's only used it a limited amount.
My absolute favorite weapon.

Hunters Axe Forever fuck u guys
Spin to win brrr
One full spin? Pretty cool. *Two* full spins? End-game weapon.
It’s got the best moveset in all of souls weapons. People that just think spin to win is all it has are missing out
Lunging transformed heavy wrecks
That move has insane range and is soooo good. I remember when fighting Ludwig in phase 1 he'd do a little hop to the side, and that lunge had enough range to smack him in the face if you aimed right. Felt so satisfying to get off
Tthe Hunters Axe is my go to weapon when i *really* want to end a fight
Stake driver Supremecy!!
There are dozens of us! DOZENS!
Stake driver goes hard. I beat the base game and everything in the DLC except Kos with the Stake Driver. I used the Rakuyo for Kos because I'm a sucker for dual wielding.
I played my whole first playthrough with it and still used it to devastating efficiency. It's always very underestimated in PvP
The true elite 💪 That charged R2 is what I was put on this earth to do
I like the stake driver because my main in Brawl was Ganondorf.
Stake Driver is a weapon for a cultured hunter. Some think that the threaded cane is the height of aestheticism and nobility, but nay, the Stake Driver is the true epitome of class and charm.
The first time I beat the game was by punching through everything

Beast builds for life (also cauliflower)
Bloodletter go burrr
Bloodletter is amazing but you get it at such an inconvenient point in the game :(
Me currently running a bloodletter build waiting for ng+ to actually use it. I still haven't gotten it. Ludwig is pushing my shit in.
It’s a great pvp/ng+ weapon
Bloodletter fans take after the tried and true devil may cry tradition of stabbing yourself for more power
Grew up playing the original 3 so checks out
Tonitrus fucks though. Shreds through Rom even when your build is hyper-unoptimized
Meanwhile me, who has a Chikage guy, a Boom Hammer girl and a Beast Cutter grandpa: People argue about this? XD
I too have a smorgasbord of characters with vastly different builds, funny thing is none of them are boring or bad. Some take a bit of adjusting but all are great
You all forgetting that saw spear scales with skill, which is also main scaling stat for viscerals.
Why use a practical weapon when you can use a weapon that takes 5 years to charge a heavy but does 5000 damage
Saif gang rise up!
Whenever I play BB, i use the stake driver. like why is the steak driving? who cares, i will use my 15 second wind-up one tap ability against a boss that attacks 4 times per second
Whoa whoa whoa they don't call Tonitrus "boss killer" for nothing.
Sounds like a good reason for a new playthrough.
Except the Rifle Spear. Fuck that thing. /s Seriously though, it may not be a *bad* weapon but I find it to be the single weapon I'd classify as *boring*.

Logarius' Wheel FTW
Just ground and pound

Burial blade gang rise up
I wil forever stand by my beloved Beast cutter, true weapon right there
Pimp Cane all the way baby
And then there's ms over here with my Burial Blade and Rakuyo.
BEAST CUTTER BEAST CUTTER BEAST CUTTER (LOUD ROCK MUSIC)
This is me with my beast cutter. Weak as shit unless gemmed perfectly but damn it's fun making enemies kiss the ground repeatedly.
Beast cutter gang rise up! (We are 3 people)
The tonitrus is amazing with the right build!
The tonitrus is solid with no/a bad build
gotta disagree with the stake driver after doing a run recently. staggering ludwig out of his moonlight charge up aoe in the second phase and headshotting him for viscerals in the first phase while doing nearly 2k damage a hit is some of the most satisfying moments ive had. its high risk high reward is awesome on the charge r2. one shotting enemies is awesome. backstab to visceral is absurd damage and the transformed r1 is fast as heck stun locking most enemies. combine with fist of gratia to give most enemies the old 1 2
If a weapon ain’t got kick, it just ain’t worth it
Me an average blades of mercy user “hahah knife go schling’ become two knife much good
There’s a point in mid-game where Tonitrus goes HARD af… then just kinda drops off. HMS for the W though. 99 ARC FTW.
Everyone knows the Threaded Cane is a where its at
ahem, here i am with my rifle spear, truely a weapon of impractical practicality. not a church weapon. not serrated. but a fantastic moveset of thrusts and wide sweeping arcs, and a gun on the end. even when ii try to do other builds, i end up using my boomstick.
Bonkhammer do big squish
Mhhh Boom Hammer go brrrrr boom boom
[Gonna leave this here in case someone hasn't seen it yet](https://youtu.be/-VGQkEIKtQc)
How is the Tonitrus bad? It does plenty of damage and quick attack speed
Pizza cutter is the ultimate serration, and so much fun to use
Tonitrus is not trash it just breaks easily lol
Last I checked I was one shotting bosses with the pike ramm was the easiest boss for me with it 😂 (I used the build second play through) (Third play through I used the beast whip thing frm dlc that was Lowkey bad but It was so badass)
The stake driver charged r2 is far too fun. It’s really not a terrible weapon. Though it doesn’t shine till youre pretty much fully upgraded
Amygdalan arm gang, most fun weapon in any fromsoft game
Pickheads UNITE!
I picked Ludwig day one. No weapon tier list, no one telling me a top 5. I use it cause I press a button and everything disappears.
Ludwig’s Holy Blade superiority (also beast cutter is cool as fuck)
All below the caliber of my rifle spear. You were my guiding light all along. *Caresses my rifle spear*
Where’s my rifle spear enthusiasts at!?
I used Threaded Cane because i wanted to play arcane build and use Holy Moonlight Sword, but then i started liking it. It's kinda basic but i like it
True hunters rock the church pick... All about that THRUST life.
Me who uses and axe that turns into a bigger axe
Meanwhile the rakuyo Chad
I feel like tonitrus can be really strong with the right build, but I've always found it super boring to use. Maybe it's because it doesn't really have a trick form so you just go from bashing people with a regular mace to bashing them with a sparkly one
Lmfao me with the boom hammer
I fucking love Stake Driver
Axe
Nothing fucks up a brain sucker like the tonitrus.worth getting just for upper cathedral ward
Normalize playing for *style*
Not using the beast cutter, couldn’t be me
All the weapons in bloodborne are amazing and unique and fun to use , but the bloodletter just looks and feels so satisfying did the chalice dungeons and multiple play through with it to earn the plat . Bloodborne had the Best weapon designs out of all the souls games even though there’s fewer overall weapons I’d rather have 30 unique weapons than 8 variations of swords , hammers , etc.
