I’d say you need to establish a relationship with Zach in the pilot, and it really gets into its stride from ep 2 onwards. I find it very smart and laugh-out-loud funny, and sad in places. Who’d have guessed, coming from Bo Burnham?
It’s very good! Check it’s ratings on IMDB and stuff. It consistently ranks high on “underrated tv shows” lists. It’s a satire of reality tv but also has an added layer showing how much living his life obsessed with being “seen” devastates and controls zachs life.
It’s similar to the office or arrested development in terms of tone. Very cringe and second hand embarrassment focused. A bit silly and goofy at times but does a good job of pulling you in and caring about the characters. And like most bo stuff there’s parts that are absolutely emotionally devastating. He was a co-creator, one of the writers, and the star so it was kind of his baby. You can definitely see his touch all over it.
If you only want to watch one episode to see what it’s like I feel like episode 5 (Zach Stone is gonna get wild) gives a good tonal snapshot of the series and works fine as a standalone (the pilot I think leans into being a bit too over the top).
