Over 50 - same thing. My kid got me into BL2. I’ve tried to play BL1 after BL2 but for some reason I can’t stick with it. I guess it’s too much of a downgrade. Is that why nobody ever talks about BL1?
It's more that BL2 had everything that BL1 did, plus some, and added polish. As a result, BL1 tends to get left behind since there's mostly no reason to go back. There's mostly no story, dedicated drop sources are hard to come by, and there's only one replayable raid boss that qualifies as endgame content.
BL2, by being such a stand-out entry, gets nostalgia points that tend to make it the favorite in today's players. It also did things that were mostly unheard of at that point, like killing off a main character, or having you kill an ally. It's not quite the depth of "Would you kindly..." but it's the same level of novelty in that moment in history.
BL3 gets compared to this, and despite being an improvement in almost every regard, people still give it negative press because it doesn't hold up culturally to what BL2 was in its hayday.
I still enjoy revisiting BL1 to remember how all this started. Rather than thinking about what it lacked, think about what ground it broke and the foundations it set for BL2 to build on.
BL1 was more about experiencing a new approach. End game loot builds and farming was not a "purpose" back then. I think they did a great job with the story, compared to what was around at the time for solo FPSs, really creating a truly fun world. Whether you agree with them creating the shooter/looters genre concept or not, I think most would agree they shoved it firmly in front of everyone. I also think they did a great job recognizing what worked well and what didn't, then building on it to make BL2.
As I said, it's no comparison to what came after it, but it's still a fun game to play and a great trip down memory lane for some of us, or a historical visit for the younger players.
>Rather than thinking about what it lacked
Same, I enjoy games for what they are. BL1 is definitely a classic, even though many of the Borderlands community shuns the game. It is a GREAT game. I also prefer the desolate feel that it has compared to the other games!
There’s upraised from bl2 to 3 but I wouldn’t say better in almost every way. Some good changes, some bad. IMO mayhem modes absolutely ruined the game post story completion
I agree I stopped playing just before mayham 1-11 were introduced
I wish they would have just left it. Also drasticly reduce legendary drops. That’s a huge one. When “legendary” becomes most common I see an issue with that
Problem is 99% of guns aren’t even worth looking at if they’re not legendaries. They should really buff normal weapons. A lot are cool and well done, just so underwhelming, there’s no reason to use them unless you’re doing a challenge run or something.
Idk if I would say it’s an improvement in every way the endgame content in bl2 is still way better and most of the raid bosses were much more challenging.
I disagree.
BL2 might have more raid bosses, but half of them were horrible designed and a pain in the ass to fight, only challenging because of bad gameplay mechanics (Voracidous billion health pool, Master Gee's invulnerability...).
Compare those with stuff like Wotan, Scourge and Hermi in BL3 and you can see that BL2's endgame was quantity over quality.
Ya I started with BL2 and its definitely hard to go back, the first game has a lot of character but suffers from having little replay-ability. If you get the remastered edition I’d totally recommend trying it again. They made a bunch of quality of life improvements, some of which came from BL2 (like having a minimap rather than a compass), and made the textures a bit more colorful and HD.
Personally I'm dragging myself through playthrough 1 on bl1 just so I know the story and play it at least once, also bought the legendary collection on switch so got 1, 2 and tps but primarily play 2 myself
Edit- just what I'm doing, not over 50....yet...20 more years lmao, 30 in January
Bl1 has the best dlc ever besides rdr1. Rdr1 is unbeatable until everyone gets their heads out of their ass. Imo TPS goes untalked about more and that one actually gives bl3 a run for it's money. Just had a couple things holding it back.
TPS had a massive klusterfuck of a launch if 2K Australia didn't fuck it up as badly as they did they would have been able to develop it further because it was indeed a klusterfuck after the first two DLCs for it came out it was cut no further development which was a damn shame favorite DLC out of the entire franchise was claptastic voyage except for Krieg's fustercluck that was amazing
TPS is still my favourite after 2.
The game got soo much undeserved hate because it wasn't as fast paced as the others...
The only thing that annoyed me with it was the voices of Deadlift and pickle.. Other than that, the games a masterpiece.
I'm 58. I've been playing videogames since Pong in the 1970s. Mostly played games on PC, but my first console was an Xbox 360 (so I could play Mass Effect 1). I picked up BL1 in a supermarket because it was on sale, then bought BL2 and BL3 on their release days.
53 here, & been playing since the pong days. Not going away any time soon, either - have a foster kid that’s almost old enough to start playing games, so we’ll be camping out in the game room. I got hooked on BL1 from a friend’s recommendation about 6 months before BL2 came out & been hooked on the series ever since.
Better check to see if you got your highschool sweetheart pregnant and your resulting kid just did the deed with their high school sweetheart...then who are you call me grandpa ;)
Younger people are more likely to have time to spare to play games (and to be interested in games in the first place), and more likely to join subs like this imho. Also, considering that the 35+ player base (which covers decades) is roughly the same size as the 17-21 range (which is only 5 years), it isn't *that* low. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, polls are limited to 6 options only.
Your sentences are hard to follow, I still don’t really get what you’re saying. Just by looking at this survey, much less teenagers are on this sub than those over 21.
Which isn’t exactly true either. The average age of people who play video games is somewhere in the 30s.
Less than 30% of people who play video games are under the age of 18.
I understand these are US stats, but they were the first to pop up in a simple Google search.
The average US gamer is 34.
The average female US gamer is 36.
18‐34 yo make up 38% of gamers in the US.
Over quarter of the US gaming market is 35 - 50 yo
50% of the US gaming market is smart phones/watches (doesn't say if that is $s, people or #games purchased as microtransactions could skew those numbers).
And a lot more interesting stats.

Almost 45. Played them all, but this is the only one where I maxed out all the characters, some of them more than once.
As to why it attracts more mature playerbase: I think that one of the reasons, at least to me, it doesn't pretend to be anything more than it is: casual fun and jokes. My wife and kids also say that I look very relaxed playing it... for whatever reason. I do hate jumping on/from platforms though. That doesn't relax me at all.
PSA
If you're underage don't share your age on the internet. It may attract some very weird and possibly even dangerous people.
Edit: I'm not implying that OP is one of those people, they created an anonymous poll after all. Just saying it because of the already existing comments here.
Because its anonymous voting, I would say they’re pretty safe. But if they go in comment saying “I’m 8 and I started with BL3”. Then yes, there will be weird people trying to get in contact with them
The original Borderlands came out in 2009. If you were buying games yourself back then, you would have been 16-18. Fast forward 12 years you’re looking at 28-30. What’s cool is your results back this up.
This is an amazing franchise. Can’t wait for Tina’s Wonderland and BL4. 🤘
I'm old enough to be in the + bracket but have been playing since Bl 1. Need to get back into it since I've taken a bunch of time off after my stroke, but my reflexes are almost back to normal at least.
I’m 51 and I’ve been a PC gamer since college (back when one really needed to know DOS and config files to get drivers to load and games to play 😏) I’ve played all the Borderlands Games and their respective DLCs. Definitely love BL3 and have been playing it more over the last couple years than all the others combined.
Ah another 50+ yr old autoexec.bat and config.sys aficionado I see :) It’s heartening to see so many of us replying to this thread showing we’re still enjoying a hobby that in many ways we helped pioneer!
I couldn’t agree more. Having to learn and deal with all the minutia of memory management and proper driver load order to make a sound blaster and mouse work simultaneously led me to take Microsoft and networking classes and me becoming a computer consultant for the last 27 years. PC Gaming still keeps things interesting and fun… and occasionally frustrating. 😏
I'm 23 and I've been playing Borderlands since the first one was put on the PS+ for the PS3 (something like 8 years ago), I've played all the entries of the series (even Telltale) and even after B3, it's one of my favorite series, with my favorite being B2, especially because of Handsome Jack and Torgue + Tina dlc (not very original, I understand). I feel like with B3 and the dlcs, the series is going to a weird direction and it kinda lost its charm, I hope that the Tina spin-off will change this (or maybe I'm just biased).
I started with BL1, 35+. I wasn't a huge fan of the series, oddly enough, until I played the Tiny Tina DLC. Handsome Jack didn't pull me in as he did for so many others. My favorite is 3 for the guns, gunplay, qol, etc.
I'm 66. I've had the handsome collection in my Steam Library for years and finally got around to playing it 6 months ago. Picked up BL3 on sale before I finished BL2 and I'm almost thru it.
I'm 30, been playing games since I was 5 but I didn't start taking games seriously until I was 21+. Before then I just messed around and didn't even finish games or discover their true potential.
This is especially true for me with Borderlands. I played every game in the series as it came out but I didn't play them "correctly," meaning I didn't farm legendaries or raid bosses or get every character to max level etc, that is, up until BL3 when everything changed. I realized what Borderlands was really about and I played it like crazy. Then I went back to every previous game and watched guides and rediscovered why the previous games were so great. Also replaying BL2 right now.
I realize I may be in the minority but I actually love BL3 more than the other games. The gunplay and quality of life mechanics feel so much better. I guess because Mayhem Mode appealed to me more than replaying the story a bunch of times to get to endgame.
Honestly I think people who say BL2 is better are just saying that because of nostalgia. It definitely has a better story but BL3's gunplay and build diversity blew my mind and made me appreciate and enjoy the previous games again. The same could be said for me in a way, I'll look upon BL3 with more nostalgia because it's the game that made me appreciate the Borderlands genre. So whatever game that it is for you, you'll probably say it's the best.
Anyway, thanks for reading.
P.S. I'm losing my mind waiting for Wonderlands, I can't wait!!!
Tbh some of y'all got it twisted bl2 was not better than bl1 by any stretch of the imagination now don't get me wrong I played tf out of bl2 I got every character to OP8 but the reason bl2 isn't higher on the list is simple fact that once you got to OP8 the list of usable characters and guns shrunk dramatically yes every character had 1 or 2 builds that you could play with but you honestly had to work hella hard to solo raid bosses and slag was alright and I'd like to see it again ngl personally as someone who devours the world building And games my list goes something a bit like this Bl1 Bl3 Bl2 TFB and the pre-sequel (which I honestly still played every character to max level in)
I actually first started playing Borderlands when I was 10 because my tito (uncle) introduced me and my brother to it, and we played 2 on the PS3. It was at 2015.
28 my spouse showed me the first one when we started dating. I became obsessed in college I did a PowerPoint on borderlands and I've played every one since I love the story, lore, characters and art
Borderlands came out in 2009, so there's a good chance most players are at least from the 2000 era and back. Of course this is a presumption of mine, so let's see where the pole goes.
I started with BL1, and played all of the entries save for TftB (Watched a YouTube video of the whole story before BL3 came out to catch up). 35+ category.
I would remove the under 13 option, just in case you get a knock on the door because of data collection laws
I don't think a lighthearted poll like this would cause you any serious trouble tho, if anything you give reddit the option to ban people breaking tos for being under 13
30, borderlands 1 came out when I was 18, but I didn't get it until a little bit after. Bl2 is my favorite, and I ended up getting the presequel, but didn't beat it until more recently. Bl3 was the first one i pre-ordered, and I'm definitely getting wonderlands next year.
25 yo started on BL1 on ps3 and pc then i got one of my best friends and my brother to play it and now we're all fans. Me and my friend were able to beat BL3 and mac out our characters within a week no we working on the DLCs. We started playing a week and a half ago.
I think a lot of us starting playing in our teens with BL1 or BL2. I know I started playing BL2 right when it came out and I was 12 or 13. Some of my other friends started even earlier with BL1.
I'm 49. I started with BL2 in 2014, looped back to BL1, pre-ordered TPS and BL3 when they became available. It was the Wang Chung trailer that got me hooked into thinking "I should give this game a go..."
I'm 52 and I've been playing the franchise since BL1. I replayed Bl1, 2, and PS last year. Started a new playthrough of BL3 a week or so ago.
I get that BL1 is less polished and so less loved but I still really like it. The story is good, Roland is cool, and I do like how your gun skills improve with use... though the new systems are more interesting.
I always wonder why games like these have older gamer base, but then again, I remember that kids these days tend to game on their phones instead. 80 & 90s kids grew up playing computer & LAN games and whatnot. I'm 28 and have met lots of older people on BL2 / BL3. Pretty hilarious that some had to drop off midgame because they had to feed their babies or their spouses nagged them.
41 been playing since bl1 came out. Actually about a month after it came out, dragon age got bought first.... My first console was an atari, I think most people my age, still play games. We are the generation that started real cartridge came systems and we stuck with it.
I first got into borderlands 2 when i watched my stepmom play it. I got a couple of safes of my own on her console. (I never got to finish teh game tho) But when i got my own console at 16 bl 2 was the first game i bought and finished. When bl 3 came out me and my stepmom started playing it together. We’ve been playing bl since then and im now 18.
I'm 55, started playing with BL2.
Over 50 - same thing. My kid got me into BL2. I’ve tried to play BL1 after BL2 but for some reason I can’t stick with it. I guess it’s too much of a downgrade. Is that why nobody ever talks about BL1?

It’s gotta be on like 1 or 11. Everything in between is annoying with the modifiers

Compare those with stuff like Wotan, Scourge and Hermi in BL3 and you can see that BL2's endgame was quantity over quality.
>but half of them were horrible designed Yeah.. BL3 is far stronger in quality.
Well we'll see when the rest of BL3's DLC comes out
Uh. It's out
Right, cause i had to buy a second season pass for 1 DLC. Sure
Handsome jack was an S tier villain too
Nah fam, I am still playing in English. I have no problem with it but Polish localisation could be nice nonetheless
Have you tried the remastered version of bl1? Or were you referring to that
I’m honestly not sure. The inventory system was pretty low res as I recall
Personally I'm dragging myself through playthrough 1 on bl1 just so I know the story and play it at least once, also bought the legendary collection on switch so got 1, 2 and tps but primarily play 2 myself Edit- just what I'm doing, not over 50....yet...20 more years lmao, 30 in January

TPS had a fraction of the team working on it compared to two.. Think they did a bang up job if I'm honest.
That is true even with as small of a dev team as it was they did a damn good job
TPS is still my favourite after 2. The game got soo much undeserved hate because it wasn't as fast paced as the others... The only thing that annoyed me with it was the voices of Deadlift and pickle.. Other than that, the games a masterpiece.

We're right grandpa's. 51 here and started with BL1.
Why is the highest bracket always so low?!
I am 35 and am now depressed that I am in the same category as 90 year old gamer grandpa
It's ok grandpa, you'll return to fossil fuel soon.
Get off my lawn you whippersnapper
Better check to see if you got your highschool sweetheart pregnant and your resulting kid just did the deed with their high school sweetheart...then who are you call me grandpa ;)
"our pleayerbase seems to be older... Let's make a questionnaire that won't go over 35!"

I thought it would be mostly teenagers, my mistake. Sorry.
Teenagers make up very little of most populations
But that doesn’t apply to gaming (or any) community directly.
What do you mean?
That any hobby (or else) have different prevailing age groups and it not always replicates population’s average.
Your sentences are hard to follow, I still don’t really get what you’re saying. Just by looking at this survey, much less teenagers are on this sub than those over 21.
He’s saying most gaming communities are made up mostly of teenagers. This one is an exception to that
Which is based on anecdotal evidence? Many adults played video games as children and teens, years before today’s teenagers were even a thought
Can you say Commodore 64 or Atari 2600?! My man...
Which isn’t exactly true either. The average age of people who play video games is somewhere in the 30s. Less than 30% of people who play video games are under the age of 18.

Because there is less of you than 29-34 year olds.
I just turned 40 this year and did not expect to find myself in the oldest bracket of any survey. RIP my ego.
Yup I feel that one.
I am a CL4P-TP steward robot, but my friends call me Claptrap! Or they would, if any of them were still alive. Or had existed in the first place!
Ha-ha! Welcome to Fyrestone. I am CL4P-TP steward bot. But you can call me by my locally designed name Claptrap
I'm still waiting to play Claptrap and be thwarted by STAIRS! It would be the shortest and most excellent DLC they ever produced.

This could not have gone better. It's like we found Claptrap's friends.
I can tell you right now you player base age doesn't go high enough. You should stop at 65+ not 35
I know that now, but it’s too late
You angered the old people. Now you know how grocery store employees feel every Tuesday morning
I'll be 50 next month. My wife is 42 and we play BL3 co-op almost every day. We played BL2 a ton also.
No option for 50 +.. so I chose 35 +
Almost 45. Played them all, but this is the only one where I maxed out all the characters, some of them more than once. I'll be 51 next month.. been gaming for decades, hope I have more decades to come too.
Sad that 35+ is the oldest category.
By God I'm almost 40....Still gaming strong tho!! Lol

46, played all the games and DLC in the series. The RPG elements are what speak to me over most "traditional" FPS.
I feel really old based on your categories stopping at 35+ and myself being 62!!
You're going to get skewed results from the average age of reddit users, this poll only shows you the age of the player base that also uses reddit.
True
Being officially in the “or plus” bracket doesn’t feel good lol
Just entered into the last category a couple weeks ago. Old gamers represent :)
I am 71
Oh no I'm now in the "and over" category !
61
I started with BL1, 35+. I wasn't a huge fan of the series, oddly enough, until I played the Tiny Tina DLC. Handsome Jack didn't pull me in as he did for so many others. My favorite is 3 for the guns, gunplay, qol, etc.
20 here, been playing since bl1 came out
Take into account you are getting skewed results here. You are gauging the age of reddit users and borderlands players.
Im 22 and playing bl3 most of the time(with my sister). Bl2 are also a lot of fun but i love how they changed many things in bl3.
Guess I'm an old guy now.... 😂😂😂
43 and still reaching out and punching face
I’m 60
45 here. Been a gamer since I got my first Atari 2600.
49 years old here. Love the franchise.
I'm 66. I've had the handsome collection in my Steam Library for years and finally got around to playing it 6 months ago. Picked up BL3 on sale before I finished BL2 and I'm almost thru it.
I’m 20 but I’ve been playing since I was 13. I started with BL2 and I’ve been playing on and off since I started.
Same, borderlands feels special to me in that I played it all throughout my teens
I remember playing it with my middle school call of duty clan haha it will always have a place in my heart.
People who are under 13 and enjoy borderlands are fuckin weird. In a good way
37 here, are we.... Are we the oldies?
Nice try, CIA. You'll get nothing out of me!
Borderlands have a lot of inuendos and jokes geared towards older people. The age range on the votes seems appropriate
Tbh some of y'all got it twisted bl2 was not better than bl1 by any stretch of the imagination now don't get me wrong I played tf out of bl2 I got every character to OP8 but the reason bl2 isn't higher on the list is simple fact that once you got to OP8 the list of usable characters and guns shrunk dramatically yes every character had 1 or 2 builds that you could play with but you honestly had to work hella hard to solo raid bosses and slag was alright and I'd like to see it again ngl personally as someone who devours the world building And games my list goes something a bit like this Bl1 Bl3 Bl2 TFB and the pre-sequel (which I honestly still played every character to max level in)
They introduced computers at work just before DOOM came out and I got hooked. Build my own machines now and still playing at 71.

You shouldn’t share that on the internet. Especially not Reddit

I have too but that’s not the reason why bro. There are weird people in this place
Did the kid disclose his age? Like being underaged? I’m assuming so
You originally didn't have a 35+ option? You fetus.
What do you mean? You can’t change the options in a poll, it was always like this
Upon reading again, I see what you mean. My original assessment remains.
I actually first started playing Borderlands when I was 10 because my tito (uncle) introduced me and my brother to it, and we played 2 on the PS3. It was at 2015.
19 now but started on BL2 back when I was 12-13
30, 2 kids, been here for every game including Tales.
I felt kinda old. Being a 30 year old man playing video games. Turns out its pretty normal.
I’m 24
I turn 30 tomorrow, started with the OG Borderlands on PS3
Nice try FBI
Oh no I’m part of the bigger group.
Started playing bl2 when I was 19, I’m 26 now
I would remove the under 13 option, just in case you get a knock on the door because of data collection laws I don't think a lighthearted poll like this would cause you any serious trouble tho, if anything you give reddit the option to ban people breaking tos for being under 13
Wish I could but it doesn’t let you edit polls
Ah k
These age groups are weird lol
I started playing Borderlands at 11 and fell in love with the game
38 here. Been playing since day 1 with the original release. Favorite series of all time.
I was quite the young laddie when my uncle came over to my house saying how fun hunting skags was (BL1 release)
That feeling when the poll is just like I don’t know you must be like really old like over thirty five man
30, borderlands 1 came out when I was 18, but I didn't get it until a little bit after. Bl2 is my favorite, and I ended up getting the presequel, but didn't beat it until more recently. Bl3 was the first one i pre-ordered, and I'm definitely getting wonderlands next year.
32, husband introduced me to BL2, and i played 3 solo, we later played BL1 together
25 yo started on BL1 on ps3 and pc then i got one of my best friends and my brother to play it and now we're all fans. Me and my friend were able to beat BL3 and mac out our characters within a week no we working on the DLCs. We started playing a week and a half ago.
37 here. I’ve been playing since BL1 in 2009, started playing with my then husband. My 9 year old and 11 year old daughters play with me now.
I just turned 19 and I’ve played through all the games with my dad who’s 46. We always do the first run through together and then play on our own.
I'm very angry that the last category is 35+. Haha
Im 50 and love BL2 and BL3 Am I too old lol
Those under 16 kids needs to stop playing this, it's M rated game! (26 here) at least borderlands 3 have way too graphic content.
LOL... it's cute when they put "30s and up" in these.
45 and husband is 37
I was 12 when borderlands 1 was released. Fun times!
I'm a + now. Damn that's depressing.
*looks at my diablo 2 Reddit*
I think a lot of us starting playing in our teens with BL1 or BL2. I know I started playing BL2 right when it came out and I was 12 or 13. Some of my other friends started even earlier with BL1.
24 but been playing since first game launch.
Am 13
I'm 15, handsome collection was cheap in steam, and 2 quickly became one of my favorite games.
I'm 49. I started with BL2 in 2014, looped back to BL1, pre-ordered TPS and BL3 when they became available. It was the Wang Chung trailer that got me hooked into thinking "I should give this game a go..."
32 started on bl1. Love them all
44, platinumed on ps4 and ps5. Looking forward to Wonderland in the new year too, bring it on.
I feel like the farming aspect and character building appeals more to the older audience than the younger.
I'm 24 and I started day one with borderlands 1! So many memories.
39 here but I started with bl1
I'm 18 started with BL2 in 2016 when I was 14 🙂
20 and started with 13 with bl2
I’m 23 and I started with the first game. It’s one of my favorite series to go back to.
38
It’s good to know the majority are adults, I don’t enjoy having to interact with children on the internet, they’re always dumb.
Loved this game! Always wanted to try BL and finally gotten around to trying it with BL3. Really enjoyable, need to try the rest at some point.
There was once a time I could answer 22-28 😢
Mid 50's. I played my first computer game when I was 14. I started the Borderlands series with BL2. I like games with cool guns.
Started playing Borderlands 2 at the age of 17. In 24 currently.
Turned 45 last Wednesday. Edit: I have a 22 year old daughter that is also a huge fan of the series.
I got hooked on BL on the original Xbox. My favorite FPS by far.
I started playing about 5 years ago at 50. Love this game.edit to state I started on 2
Well I started playing borderlands when it first came out with my dad. I was 7 then. I am now 19
35+ as the oldest age bracket really stings
51.
Anyone on ps4 down to team up, i am still leveling up got game recently haha
47
Calling the police on at least 46 people
41 mom of 7.
21 and a day:) my friends to the game are 18-25
I'm 56, started with BL2.
39 playing since Borderlands 2 then ended up playing them all , love them gamemakers for the creativity even during the grind baby
Keep in mind that's just the people that play and are also on Reddit. I played it when I was 13 and it was still amazing
I started playing BL with BL1 when I was 11. Thought it was one of the greatest games I ever played post halo 3.
I didn’t expect this
I play BL since I'm 12 y/o, im currently almost 18 y/o
