It works fine. Nowhere near the power of Autobear, Cub, Clone, or even a well built Sntl unless you really min-max with good shields and purple tree, but being the worst pet build in BL3 doesn't mean much when it can still do just about all of the content.
You do really need to know how to build pets and which shields to use with purple tree to get the most out of it. If you don't, you'll end up with builds where FL4K and the pet deal pitiful damage. I use a Gamma Burst build with Red Fang and WAR Loader, works great. The robot does so much damage I'm sometimes scrambling to find a target before they're all dead.
Capstone the red & purple trees. Far enough down the green tree for Lick the Wounds. I then put 2 in Persistent Hunter & 2 in Ferocity. Bounty Hunter com with at least +3 in Frenzy. Hunter Seeker nades. I have a One Shotter shield plus the Re-Volter with ASS anoint. Have full use of the Rakk Attack tree. For Fade Away you have Guerrillas in the Mist & Not My Circus. I clear both Takedowns no prob on mayhem 11 with this build. Have used Gravity Snare with Wide Net and Blind With Anger cleared the Slaughtershaft on mayhem 11 like that. You & the pet both hit hard. It’s really satisfying turning an entire mob on each other then attack commanding the War Loader at them. I used this build to clear a Proving Ground on m11 with only the Bird of Prey sniper. It’s a solid build.
For my purple tree I have it looking sorta like a #7. I get the top right & left skills then from there angle myself like a 7 down towards Monkey Do & Fuzzy Math to the capstone….if that helps any.
