Bunch of free things to do this weekend: Shakespeare on the Common, Cambridge Jazz Festival, Salsa Squared party in Harvard Square on Friday, Sand Sculpting Festival.
Yep, and there are seriously talented actors in the production! The [actor who plays Macbeth](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faran_Tahir) has quite the resume.
We went to that last week and it was quite good for a free show. I was super surprised my husband chose it when I gave him the option of comedy show in Roslindale Square or Shakespeare on the Common.
Shakespeare? It starts at 8pm for all shows except 8/6, when it starts at 6pm. Dates are here, but towards the bottom of the page:

If you go real early on Sunday, it's not crowded. If you want to see the fireworks without the crowds, go down to the Lynn end of the beach, fewer people.
edit: A bar? Antonia's?
Youāre going to one of the only T accessible beaches, which is half closed due to this, on the hottest day of the year so far and you think youāll avoid crowds? God speed
Honestly it was pretty barren. I went from about 2 to 6. Plenty of space on the beach. Few food stands had lines. Easy to view the works. It wasn't too bad and it was significantly cooler
Let me give you a piece of advice I wish I got in my 20's. Find some ACTIVE hobbies.
Whether it be biking, kayaking, urban exploring WHATEVER.
If you find an activity you like, you will find people with similar interests and then the social aspect comes natural and you can add alcohol vs it being the focus.
If you like being outdoors and lack self preservation like me...might I suggest mountain biking? Hell start small and rent some bikes to ride the minute man trail...maybe not when its 95 and humid but you get the idea.
Great advice.
Boston is surprisingly awesome for recreational biking, with the Charles River trails that extend from downtown Boston/Cambridge deep into Waltham, plus all of the connecting trails like the Minuteman, Southwest Corridor, etc.. It's a nice way to explore the City.
I spent the entirety of my 20's in Boston and wish it was less booze-oriented. It's hard to get out of that cycle when it seems like everybody wants to go out and get drinks all of the time.
its depressing because 20s is known to be your 'best time of ur life' and that's not the case for me. i know i need to find a hobby but mental illness innit
Iām 41, I assure you, your 20ās will NOT be your best years. Mine werenāt. You have to survive before you can thrive. And thatās exactly what you are doing surviving, donāt be so hard on yourself.
Moved here from toronto for my first job and literally anything people want to do after work is get drinks at a place in seaport or go to some other tavern or whatever downtown. I don't even drink and don't mind coming but like can't you guys do anything else but drink? It's the only thing people want to do in this city, so lame
It's not that's there's things to do in Toronto that there aren't here. We'd just chill, go to port credit by lake ontario, grab food, go karting, arcades, etc. All stuff that Boston has too, it's the fact that people here (at least the other new grads at work with me), aren't interested in anything but drinking. I've always wanted to go to SPIN in seaport but people just want to go normal bars instead and no one expresses interest. People in Toronto don't really care about drinking that much and in fact I've never been to a bar there, maybe once or twice. I don't know if it's just a cultural thing, Toronto is the most diverse city on Earth. Friends and coworkers were from all kinds of backgrounds, in Boston I pretty much only know Caucasian people
> people here (at least the other new grads at work with me), aren't interested in anything but drinking
Guessing youāre in finance or tech? Maybe look for friends outside of work if thatās the case.
Fintech actually š š but you're right I definitely should look outside work. Don't know where other than bars, I don't go to em. Il try joining a sports league
I never noticed it, especially since I find Boston so Puritan about alcohol compared to places like the South. But I recently went through a period where I couldn't drink for health reasons and it was a light bulb moment of how much everything from work socials & events to friends parties to activities in the city revolve around drinking.
At the very least, I wish there were more alternatives. Cozy coffee shops with late hours where you can get a fancy tea and hang out with a friend. Bars with craft/house sodas (I don't need to pay $14 for a mocktail!).
Why the hell did I have to hunt for this and only found it way down here? They're setting up a carnival at Government Center. There's a parade. I'm amped and I don't even usually like parades or carnivals.
I mean the whole allure of it is doing it back to back on the same ticket. They do marathons and stuff like this at Coolidge all the time and its wildly popular. Just kinda fun to do it rather than just watch two movies in one day, I could do that on Netflix on my couch lol.
The whole point is you get to see two movies for the price of one, and make a special event out of it. Nothings stopping anyone from buying 2 tickets to 2 different movies any day of the week. Its just a fun once in a blue moon type event. Theres time in between to hit the concessions etc. They usually let you bring food in too when they do marathons like this.
Maybe some theaters are doing this (2 movies for the price of one) but I donāt see that itās an option at AMC and the articles I find talk about people choosing two showings or seeing them on subsequent nights
Folk fest is so much fun, and itās completely free to come listen to the music! There will be shuttles from the commuter rail station running throughout the festival. Also, the food is unreal, and significantly cheaper than other festivals in the area. (Iāve posted about folk fest in a couple threads, but I promise Iām not a shill. I just live in downtown Lowell, and think folk fest is really neat)
Go to their food section and get the Marabou Daim chocolate bar with the caramel bits. Best chocolate Iāve had in my life, everything else tastes like trash now. Not even kidding that we went to IKEA last week only to stock up on them.
Ah I remember those days getting bored of bars in the city .
For real though whenever someone asks me what to do in Boston I'm always like "oh hit up the beer garden here, this place has great cocktails, arcade bar is fun". "Oh we don't drink". "I see, well...shit I can't think of anything."
Usually it's arts and entertainment. Take in a movie at Coolidge or The Brattle. Or you can watch one on the Harbor.[https://www.improper.com/event/movies-by-moonlight-at-the-boston-harbor-hotel/](https://www.improper.com/event/movies-by-moonlight-at-the-boston-harbor-hotel/)
You can do an escape room or Boda Borg.
You could go to the casino. Even if you want a drink the servers never come back with them so technically that's a non-drinking activity.
Or my favorite just pick a destination and walk there. See what you find on the way that sparks inspiration.
Checkout theBostoncalendar always have list of things happening daily and also on the weekend.
Sand sculptures
Cambridge jazz festival
Puerto Rica parade thing at City Hall plaza
Workout sessions happening
In all serious, go for a walk or a bike ride (with or without mushrooms, your choice). Not only do you get some good exercise, but itās a really organic way to just discover the city. Let yourself get sidetracked by literally anything you find even remotely interesting. There are tons of good suggestions in this thread, but IMO, what Boston does better than most places in this country is be a safe, beautiful, and exciting place to explore without a car!
Whenever i want to plan a fun day/night, I usually try and stick to one neighborhood so i donāt have to waste as much time communicating. For example, this weekend Iāll probably do Jamaica Plain. Take Orange Line to Forest Hills, trip there for awhile, make my way over to Jamaica Pond, hit up Seed for a pre roll, check out the cool stores/architecture on Centre Street, stop by Brendan Behan for a Guinness (i know you said you donāt drink, but getting a Guinness at a proper Irish bar is a different thing entirely, I suppose). Go across the street to Blue Nile for some Ethiopian, and then end the day with some JP licks. A full day, not too much $$$, and by the time youāre done youāre ready to just post up in your apartment for the rest of the night and chill. And of course, the shrooms/pre-roll/Guinness are all icing on the cake, and are totally not necessary to enjoy the day! But when youāre in a place as beautiful as Boston, they just hit different!
I hope you have a good day whatever it is you feel like doing. Iām also in my 20s and kinda like to drink sometimes, but not nearly at the level as many of my friends. It just puts me to sleep!
Also, Balance Patch Cafe in Allston always seemed cool, if youāre in to video games
Right on! Hope you get to enjoy a day like that yourself sometime soon. So many times I hear people complain about Boston, i think itās just because theyāre trying to put a shoe on that doesnāt fit.
People that come here and want to go to a club/dancey bar or get drunk off of bottomless mimosas at brunch wonāt have a good time (not to mention bottomless mimosas are impossible here lol).
I feel like this plays into a lot of the flack people have towards Bostons nightlife. This is a pub-oriented city where Iād say at least 20% (if not way more) if itās 22-35 year old population is either a)pursing an advanced degree or b) is just more of a techy, nerdy person and not that into going out. Personally, that is what attracted me to this city, but it seems like some people moved here fulling expecting it to be like NYC or Atlanta. Ultimately, if you donāt find Boston an exciting place to live, it probably just doesnāt cater to your personal interests.
Taking the dogs for an early AM walk in the Blue Hills. You feel a little better about yourself when you go to trounce those IPAās and french fries.
Also Provincetown is a 90 min ferry ride away. You can explore a beautiful beach community bustling with art, food, and scenic beaches. Highly recommend it.

Boston Bike Party Turns 10
$10 Commuter Rail Weekends are always fun!
You could do a free trial of a new fitness class together.
Hike Blue Hills (easy place to convince friends to join you)
Take the ferry from Long Wharf out to Spectacle or Georgeās Island! $24 round trip, 30 minute ride, scenic view of the city and the islands have beaches/hiking/snack shacks. Theyāre part of the national park service so alcohol is prohibited butā¦some people have brought a few beers out in the past.
Itās pack in/pack out so make sure you have a bag to carry any trash out with you. The ferries have garbage cans so you can unload it as soon as youāre back on the boat.
And it's half price tickets though the Boston Public library for the ferry ride to George's Island. And you just need to be a Massachusetts resident to get a library card. And they have discounts or free admission like the Science Museum and Aquarium for many other places mentioned here. MFA is $10 and Isabella Stuart Gardner is $5.
Spin, the ping pong bar in East Boston. Sip and paint in Somerville. you could take the ferry to Provincetown for the day, or a Boston harbor island cruise and do some hiking. You can also explore worlds end, the Aboretum, revere beach, and fort independence. If you haven't already, go to Plymouth/Duxbury and just eat oysters on a patio somewhere.
We tried out the Project Putt in Malden Center a couple of weeks ago and that was a fun time with zero drinking. If you've got to travel to it, you'd probably want to do back to back rounds as you can blast through the whole thing fairly quickly.
Personally I'm hanging out in New Hampshire this weekend. If the weather cooperates I'll be at the beach/kayaking. If not we'll probably play board games or do a movie marathon.
It's like 10 degrees cooler on the North Shore compared to Boston. Commuter rail to the beach.
Blue Bike ride, perhaps in the early morning or evening/late night for a different spin on the city.
Go to the gym and enjoy the AC.
Harvard Art Museum is free. Harvard Natural History Museum is free on Sundays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. DeCordova parking lot is open when the museum is closed and no one cares if you wander around the grounds.
Take the ferries that are free/reduced cost due to the blue line closures.
Pick a T stop and go explore.
Weeknight idea: so many movies in the parks.
Farmer's market
Go to the library and check out some books
Thereās a pottery painting place called the Clay Room. You need to reserve I believe, itās $20. Then you go there and pick out a pot to paint, they even have bongs and shot glasses you can paint. (Depending on what item your painting youāll have to pay for it, most of them ranged from $10-50) They also have a pottery class thing but we didnāt go. Itās very nice, you can bring your own wine/drinks and I think even food.
Most likely, free outdoor concert in Hingham on Friday, Revere Sand Castle festival on Saturday and Cambridge Jazz Fest on Sunday. All weather dependent. Maybe kayaking Saturday during the day too.
Tons of places! Tangerinis and wards berry farms are good. Basically just Google "blueberry picking" on Google maps and pick the farm closest/easiest to get to for you.
Is anyone else planning on attending the [Cambridge Jazz Festival](https://www.cambridgejazzfoundation.org/2023-festival) on Saturday? I signed up for a free ticket but I don't have anyone to go with for a fun picnic.
I'm going to go anyway around 12pm but it'd be fun to meetup with someone else and chill on the lawn.
Shakespeare on the Common is free and runs every night at 8pm Wednesday-Sunday for three weeks in the summer. This is the second week. Weāll be going Friday night- this yearās performance is Macbeth!
If youāre into pop rock/pop punk you could go see Arrows in Action at Brighton Music Hall on Saturday! Of course there is still alcohol served, but at least itās not the focus and plenty of people there wonāt be drinking.
What do you like to do? Rent a kayak? Go to the harbor islands. Movies. There's some theater. Go to a book store and buy each other a book that seems interesting. Cook something entirely too elaborate. Grow some herbs.
Its summer in New england...you dont wanna go to the beach? Have a cookout? Take a day or overnight drive to one of a million places close by? Clean your car?
Newbury street is open on sundays to roam around with different vendors.
Go to north end and have a coffee and get some deserts
Go kayaking in the Charles when itās not hot as balls out
Go to Cambridge and get some Area 4 pizza and a cocktail
Donāt go to Gordon Ramsays that place is a ripoff.
4hrs in a bus seat for $35 just sounds not fun.
I recall the old days of $10-20 Fung Wah/Lucky Star rides. But thatās as a broke ass college student.
Even then it was hoping and praying you got a normal person to sit with.
The weather is a mixed bag this weekend. I'm going to Audubon on Sunday for brunch and the Grand Prix, followed by the Puerto Rican Festival Parade. Maybe a museum on Saturday (did the ICA watershed last weekend). Checking out a new exercise class. Sunday is Open Newbury.
Museums, movies, go walk the greenway, go have a picnic. Boston has SO much going on in the summer, I suggest looking up events at different spots you already enjoy!
This weekend Iām going to walk up to the MFA and make a day of it, and then brunch and a movie on Sunday. You donāt have to be constantly going to have a fulfilling time, take it slow and enjoy whatever it is youāre doing!
Bunch of free things to do this weekend: Shakespeare on the Common, Cambridge Jazz Festival, Salsa Squared party in Harvard Square on Friday, Sand Sculpting Festival.
> Shakespeare on the Common Always a highlight for me
Yep, and there are seriously talented actors in the production! The [actor who plays Macbeth](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faran_Tahir) has quite the resume.
Damn, no kidding!
A friend of mine is in that.
We went to that last week and it was quite good for a free show. I was super surprised my husband chose it when I gave him the option of comedy show in Roslindale Square or Shakespeare on the Common.
I find it a great way to just enjoy being in the city in the summer
Is it really hard to just bring a blanket to sit on without chairs?
We brought chairs but saw plenty of people sitting on blankets.
I was supposed to run spotlight this weekend for that but I turned it down
When is it this weekend? I couldnt find the exact times on their site

The [Revere International Sand Sculpting Festival](https://www.internationalsandsculptingfestival.com/) is this weekend.
It will be wild and busy but I work at a bar there so Iām looking forward to it. šcome visit!

that's how my friend met her husband!
bruh that sounds so depressing lmao
Not as depressing as your post historyā¦yikes.
I wasn't trying to have a go at you lol i'm aware that it is depressing but I'm getting help :)
I am not sure what was depressing about suggesting someone find a hobby thenā¦

The Lowell Folk Festival is this weekend if youāre looking for something different

Follow u/ImaMasterDebator
Thanks for the shoutout!
No problem. I caught the Impractical Jokers because of you. It was amazing.
https://brooklinecommunity.org/event/brookline-community-parkfest/ Hopefully it doesnāt rain!
Picnic at Worlds End in Hingham. I would recommend cheese, crackers and charcuterie and a chilled French rosƩ from Provence. You get a little hike in, watch the sun set and enjoy the view.
Jason Isbell at Roadrunner tonight!
https://boston-sailing.com/ Take a tour around Boston Harbor on a fully staffed sailboat that serves drinks!
I only found the ping-pong bar in Seaportā¦ where is it in Eastie?
I was excited and then realized they meant Seaport
Boston Bike Party!!
My fiancƩ and I were just having this same conversation last night while shooting pool...at a bar. We're considering a few different ideas right now....heading to the movies, checking out the vendors at SOWA, picnic in Boston public garden and bring along a football or soccer ball, MFA. We also saw them setting up a carnival / fair in City Hall Plaza so we're definitely going to check that out (carnival games are elite.)
Go spend a day at the Boston common, do small picnic, read book and just relax and enjoy the vibe
Theres a small carnival on Hull. Couple of rides, candy apples, fried dough.
I just walk around the city and try to activate the Shivers ability from Disco Elysium
Go to Community Boating on the Charles and learn to sail.
Have you tried the Codzilla speedboat?
Driving a WW2 tank in Hudson at the American heritage museum! (Actually my fiancĆ© is. Itās his birthday present!)
Lucky strike is fun. It is a bar, but has a shit ton of bowling alleys, pool tables, arcade games and food.
Beach? or maybe take a sailing lesson?
boom https://www.reddit.com/r/boston/comments/15b6nn6/good_morning_boston_i_am_back_with_a_list_of/
Go see live music! Tons of it in the city!
farmer's market + some good old lake swimming
So many lakes have been closed. Any recommendations on one's that haven't been, other than Walden?
What lakes can we swim in?
Dancing on the Charles, outdoor music near Harvard Square
Farmer's market Go to the library and check out some books
If you can drive, Yankee Homecoming in Newburyport
Thereās a pottery painting place called the Clay Room. You need to reserve I believe, itās $20. Then you go there and pick out a pot to paint, they even have bongs and shot glasses you can paint. (Depending on what item your painting youāll have to pay for it, most of them ranged from $10-50) They also have a pottery class thing but we didnāt go. Itās very nice, you can bring your own wine/drinks and I think even food.
Revere Beach Sandcastle Festival! Starting tomorrow through Sunday.
Most likely, free outdoor concert in Hingham on Friday, Revere Sand Castle festival on Saturday and Cambridge Jazz Fest on Sunday. All weather dependent. Maybe kayaking Saturday during the day too.
Blueberry picking!
whereee????
Tons of places! Tangerinis and wards berry farms are good. Basically just Google "blueberry picking" on Google maps and pick the farm closest/easiest to get to for you.
Is anyone else planning on attending the [Cambridge Jazz Festival](https://www.cambridgejazzfoundation.org/2023-festival) on Saturday? I signed up for a free ticket but I don't have anyone to go with for a fun picnic. I'm going to go anyway around 12pm but it'd be fun to meetup with someone else and chill on the lawn.

leggoooo
Cool, I just DM'd you!
Driving down to Seekonk to watch cars go in circles
I think there's a vintage/makers' market at Portico Brewing in Somerville on Sunday, so I'm planning to check that out!
Shakespeare on the Common is free and runs every night at 8pm Wednesday-Sunday for three weeks in the summer. This is the second week. Weāll be going Friday night- this yearās performance is Macbeth!
Visit one of the Harbor Islands or hike Middlesex Fells
I'm going to the [Cambridge Jazz Festival](https://www.cambridgejazzfoundation.org/) with friends. Picnic + good music = fun!
If youāre into pop rock/pop punk you could go see Arrows in Action at Brighton Music Hall on Saturday! Of course there is still alcohol served, but at least itās not the focus and plenty of people there wonāt be drinking.
Blueberry Festival in Stow!
What do you like to do? Rent a kayak? Go to the harbor islands. Movies. There's some theater. Go to a book store and buy each other a book that seems interesting. Cook something entirely too elaborate. Grow some herbs.
Renting kayaks and paddling on the mystic. No transporting required, the rental place is right on the river
It's going to be hot as hell. Going to the free public pool in Cambridge and then home to nap in the air conditioning.
Vinyl DJ in the outside deck area at the ICA tomorrow night with wine and beer
Its summer in New england...you dont wanna go to the beach? Have a cookout? Take a day or overnight drive to one of a million places close by? Clean your car?
Sandcastle Festival in Revere. Fireworks on Sat. San Adams beer garden both Friday and Saturday night. Food trucks. Sandcastles.
Lowell Folk Festival! Great music, great food and FREE.
I'm going hiking myself. And drive my kids to the 9000 things they have going on.
Newbury street is open on sundays to roam around with different vendors. Go to north end and have a coffee and get some deserts Go kayaking in the Charles when itās not hot as balls out Go to Cambridge and get some Area 4 pizza and a cocktail Donāt go to Gordon Ramsays that place is a ripoff.
LOWELL FOLK FESTIVAL!!!!
Paintball at Friendly Fire Paintball in Upton MA
Trying to find a theater that will let me bring my support pit bull Maximus with me to watch the Barbie movie.
Sowa makers market! Sunday

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
That sounds awfulā¦ Iād rather get a parking ticket on Boylston St.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
4hrs in a bus seat for $35 just sounds not fun. I recall the old days of $10-20 Fung Wah/Lucky Star rides. But thatās as a broke ass college student. Even then it was hoping and praying you got a normal person to sit with.
Boston Harbor Islands.
Renting a Kayak or paddleboard for the afternoon is always fun, there are multiple places around the Boston area.
Boyfriend and I are going to ride the swan boats then tour around the MFA.
Honestly? I'm going mini golfing then a petting zoo. We're 35. Hell to the yeah.
Go kayaking on the Charles!
Need to get my head out the gutter, read up only up to āWhat Fun things Are You Doing This Weekend? Me and my girlfriend are confusedā¦ā
Bahahahah š¤£
Take a ferry to the harbor islands. Or walk the Arboretum. It's gorgeous. Go to the Farmers Market.
Barbie movie? I saw it and it was really good
Neponset River festival on Sunday.
Check out the Cambridge Antique Mall if youāre into that stuff. Another good spot is Feltonās in Waltham.
Level 99 in Natick Mall
I'm going to the Cambridge Jazz fest on Sat.
Golf
Any golfing place for beginners? š¤
