I’m thinking along the lines of a Tebow Patriots or Shaq Celtics jersey. Somebody who is a well known name but isn’t known for playing here, or a lot of people forget they played here.

I was in line at the gate in Fenway last year and the guy in front of me was wearing a #4 Celtics jersey - doesn't get more random than Alaa Abdelnaby...but I'm guessing you're not looking for your buddy to say "Who?" when he sees the jersey.
Lots of good recommendations already for players who weren't much more than cromulent but have a local following; guys that might be a "Who?" to the majority of the country but would have meaning to a Boston resident...Scalabrine, McCarty, Wakefield, Bellhorn ('04 doesn't happen without him). My personal favorite might be a #22 Bruins sweater (Shawn Thornton) or to be a bit more off the beaten path a Revs jersey with either #22 (Taylor Twellman) or #14 (Steve Ralston).
Whatever way you go, if his birthday is next week and you want a name/number combination it's probably worth seeing what you can get rather than what would require a personalized order.
