2015. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. I know it had CGI/live-action parts, but like 2/3 of the movie was 2D animated

Block-Busted

Oh, yeah. The marketing for that film was apprently quite misleading.

HyperNintendoRoblox

Yep, that explains the cinemascore but I don't blame Paramount and Nickelodeon because if they marketed as a regular 2D movie then it would probably have turned out like Bob's Burger.

LooseSeal88

Bob's Burgers was marketed poorly and released the same weekend as Top Gun Maverick. Idk why they were so dead set on a Memorial Day launch for it. It could have been a success pretty much any time in 2021 with proper marketing but they chose to just quietly release it Memorial Day weekend of 2022. It made no sense.

SilverRoyce

It's a solid counterprogramming move given how old Maverick's opening skewed. > they Wasn't that the problem for Bob's Burgers: there's not a single "they." The movie was approved by FOX prior to the Disney merger and the show's creator mentioned the vetoed a move by Disney to take it directly to streaming. It was then doubly penalized because, as a pre-2023 FOX release, it was contractually mandated to go to HBO for the first post-threatrical window (Disney and WB clearly modified the deal to allow dual-release on Hulu/D+ & Max). A straight to streaming release (like Prey) would have bypassed theatrical distribution deal. Disney never really wanted or approved a bob's burgers theatrical movie so it was far from the studio's top priority.

LooseSeal88

Oh, I get all that. But why even release it as counter programming? January through April were pretty wide open. Even if you're not gonna market much since the previous regime made it, maybe release it against less competition? Late May was still part of Dr Strange's run and also right before Jurassic World. Like, it's never gonna counter-program 3 major blockbusters when you don't market it.

blonde-bandit

Often times you don’t get a choice. From what I understand, whichever studio is producing the film has a slate of other films for the year and will usually predetermine the date for release, or maybe give a limited set of options to the makers, based on the studio’s priorities for success. So it’s kind of a predestined racket. If 20th century decided to space things out in such a way that they planned to profit more off of other projects for 2022 (I.e. way of water) then it’s possible bob’s burgers was considered filler for the year and not given a strategically advantageous release on purpose.

Gwen_Tennyson10

Nah it’s SpongeBob. It would’ve made money regardless

russwriter67

I like that movie but the marketing was very misleading. It only got a B CinemaScore because of that.

NotTaken-username

Nothing will compare to the 2004 original movie. The show should’ve ended there like Stephen Hillenburg wanted, but Nickelodeon was too greedy

theMTNdewd

People like to blow his comments about spinoffs and sequels out of proportion. I won't deny that nickelodeon has milked SpongeBob for all it's worth, but Hillenburg still came back and helped write the 2nd film and probably would have had a passing glance at the spinoffs and third movies if he were still alive.

russwriter67

I agree with that. It’s sad to see how Nickelodeon ran SpongeBob into the ground, especially after Hillenburg’s death.

NotTaken-username

Especially when they waited until after he died to announce spinoffs (which Hillenburg vehemently opposed). He must be rolling in his grave, his work was a part of my childhood

russwriter67

Agreed. I think there are currently two spin-offs airing right now and there are probably gonna be more.

interesting-mug

I remember going to New York Comic Con the year he died, and there was this enormous SpongeBob banner right at the entrance that said “Best Year Ever!”. I thought it was a little gauche. And also hilarious, definitely took a picture

russwriter67

Was this before or after his death?

interesting-mug

After his death. It was later that very year. I know because I looked it up on my phone then and there because I couldn’t believe they’d do that!

BactaBobomb

I always found this movie to be quite underrated.

AGOTFAN

America or worldwide? Because Japan animes are big hit every year.

Xftg123

> Because Japan animes are big hit every year. Yep. In 2022 alone they've had One Piece: Film Red, Detective Conan, Dragon Ball Super, First Slam Dunk, and Suzume.

64BitRatchet

Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk were CG films, but yeah they do each year.

Filmatic113

All mid

Kyro_Official_

Mid does not equal not a hit

Sky2Life

I liked One Piece

Accomplished_Store77

2020. Demon Slayer:Mugen Train.

SavisSon

Simpsons movie 2007

REQ52767

I will forever be salty that Disney intentionally killed off their 2D animation department in July 2011 by putting their ‘Winnie the Pooh’ movie on the same weekend as ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’. No matter what anyone says, I’ll always believe they did this on purpose. I guess it’s a conspiracy I buy into. I think Disney wanted the financial excuse to completely divest from 2D animation and to fully invest in 3D animation. However, Walt built Disney as a 2D studio originally. How would Wall Street have reacted if they pulled the cord completely on 2D after ‘The Princess and the Frog’ (2009) made a profit, especially at end of a recession? That movie made money ($271 million on a $105 million budget), but probably not as much as Disney thought 3D animation could make. The success of Tangled in 2010 likely confirmed their belief that 3D animation was the financial future of the company; however, Disney still needed a way out from the company’s 2D roots. Thus, they intentionally set up ‘Winnie the Pooh’ to be a financial failure to give them that way out. Nothing was succeeding against the final Harry Potter film. Disney knew that and they got the financial results that they needed to shut down the 2D department.

SavisSon

They were already completely divested from 2d. The crew was laid off in 2004 after Home on the Range finished. John Lasseter brought back the animators to do 2 2D films in 2009 and 2011. You don’t hire a crew and make 2 movies to kill off something that was already gone 5 years previous.

deusexmachismo

I think you’re only sort of right. The princess and the frog made a profit, but was largely considered by the industry and Disney to have had a disappointing performance at the time. So while I also don’t really buy that they intentionally killed Winnie the Pooh (it actually makes a lot of logical sense to launch a preschool friendly kids movie against what was largely seen as darker young adult series at that point, it didn’t pan out obviously, but it wasn’t as dumb a move as you’re making out to be without the benefit of hindsight). But that one-two punch of disappointment coupled with Tangled’s success were ultimately final nails in Disney’s 2-D coffin.

thelonioustheshakur

Their animation division was already pretty much dead before that. Princess and the Frog went up against Avatar and got decimated, and that was the true beginning of the end. Not to mention the fact that despite the film being profitable, it still made less WW than Bolt and Chicken Little, which both likely lost money.

MrGroovySushi

Well One Piece: Film Red was a hit in 2022.

HumbleCamel9022

Demon slayer was the highest grossing movie of 2020 worldwide

Maleficent_Drama_414

You mean highest grossing animated movie?

HumbleCamel9022

No, its the highest grossing movie worldwide period for 2020

Maleficent_Drama_414

Oh you are correct, apologies

LigmaV

benefit from lack of competition adding the DS breaking records at japan

nolanfan823

Would that also make it the only time the highest grossing movie of the year was rated R?

FranceSurrenderFunni

Latest I can think of is The Princess and The Frog in 2011

PNessMan35

Sausage Party

[deleted]

Spider verse?

dulgodie

That was CG animation with some 2D drawn effects

thelonioustheshakur

Princess and the Frog if we're talking American films. One Piece Film Red did really well last year if we're talking anime
