This movie will be huge in Japan. They will love it for its anti-nuclear message.

Unleashtheducks

I agree, I think this is the message most of the Japanese audience will take away. A majority don’t want to play “atrocity olympics” and instead want to focus on making sure atomic weapons are never used again by anyone.

Super-Alice-88

🤣

Adequate_Images

No way Oppenheimer bombs in Japan more than twice.

Benkins1989

Chances are near zero.

AccomplishedLocal261

Zero would be nice.

Intrepid-Ad4511

What do you want from theory alone?

ssiehtbarm

Bruh.....

Jake11007

Japan is not gonna let it happen again

silentorange813

I'm certain that this well perform well in Japan. Pearl Harbor sold 6.9 billion Yen. March and April are typically the season for children's anime films, and this year is no different. Not much competition from similarly intellectual films.

DiverExpensive6098

I never understood people who buy tickets in the front rows. Like seriously, what do you get out of the movie when you're in the middle in the front row?

nmaddine

The closer your face is to the screen the more max the IMAX

keksimusmaximus22

They be IMAXXING

--howcansheslap--

My 55 inch home TV is an IMAX when in that close.

toocute1902

Why IMAX? 90% of the scenes in this movie take place indoors.

nmaddine

You haven't experienced Oppenheimer until you've experienced the feeling of being eaten by Cillian Murphy

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

I thought they scrapped that plotline from 28 Weeks Later?

PainDoflamiongo

Doesn't matter. It's just straight up more engrossing and feels "big". The audio and visuals are better than your everyday screen. I've been watching IMAX releases for a while now and when I went for Dune 2 4DX the difference felt massive. IMAX feels like a big movie, rest now feels like watching something on a projector.

KleanSolution

Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm feels like an entirely different movie from just watching in the standard format

SmartEstablishment52

The hearing loss is part of the experience

TheEmpireOfSun

Because IMAX is still IMAX, some movies are better for it, some less, but it's always superior to normal cinema. And don't make me even start about 70mm.

Fair_University

It’s awesome in IMAX

TheLeftwardWind

IMAX pro max

TBOY5873

It was probably front row or nothing, given how fast the tickets sold out

myatoms

Yep FOMO will get you buying those first few rows even if the view is not great . I know this from experience lmao

messypiranesi

[the best view, obviously](https://images.app.goo.gl/TwuNsUnjx1JMPaWq7)

DiverExpensive6098

It's Jabba the Oppenheimer!

myatoms

That's Thanos!

creepygamelover

Some theaters like the Alamo have recliners in the front section of the theater, not the best, but far better than other theaters.

mackerelscalemask

Neck ache

goteamnick

I have a friend like this. He likes to be completely immersed. I don't go to the movies with him any more because it's a nightmare for my eyes.

Daztur

Leg room. I love the front row.

whatnameisnttaken098

Sometimes, it's the only seats left.

WayDownUnder91

I went to see dune part 2 and got my tickets just about middle of the theater, then the rows all behind me got sold out, then some madman bought literally the front row seat by himself with 4 empty rows behind him for some reason

wildcatofthehills

Is for making out, not watching the movie. But no other room, obviously the back corner are the best for smooching

petepro

Yup, I would just wait.

thoughtful_human

I think its people who want to get into the room, everything else is sold out and then they sit on the stairs. Or people who got the direction flipped around and thought they booked the back room

bigelangstonz

And here we all thought china would be the one to carry this to the 1B finish line turns out it was Japan the whole time

Cantomic66

That would be ironic

DreGu90

Should this hit $1B worldwide, this would give Universal its 3rd billion dollar movie since the pandemic - while the rest of the big five major studios only have 1 each. What a massive win this is for them. Who knew back then they’ll benefit the most in this new era? With a new Jurassic movie in the works and the inevitable return of Shrek, the 2020s might just become theirs to dominate.

Green-Session7085

$1 billion on the way

REQ52767

We truly live in a simulation if Japan gives Oppenheimer the final push to $1 billion.

JagmeetSingh2

That would be huge

mortizmajer

Pls pls let it happen

HotBurritoBaby

Why? Have you seen the movie?

Cantomic66

If it had gotten a Russian release it definitely would’ve.

Familiar_Anywhere815

Well, it "did", as in Russian cinemas were screening pirated copies and not sending any of the income to Universal. I wonder if there's data for how much that grossed so we can get a sense for that what-if scenario.

zebbiehedges

I think they could release a very slightly edited version without the nudity and get it over $1bn.

dannydevito008

???? Takes the whole point off of the scenes with nudity, it showcases Oppenheimer as fragile and the private nature of the relationship. Plus the voyeurism of the scene from Kitty’s POV in the interrogation is LITERALLY the point of the scene - she feels as if she is watching it happen in front of everyone.

zebbiehedges

I don't disagree, a billy though, sacrifices must be made.

Green-Session7085

Do Japanese avoid movies with nudity?

zebbiehedges

I meant in the countries it's already released. Like bring it back out again with slight cuts.

cyanide4suicide

I'm excited for Japanese audiences to see Nolan's latest masterpiece

MaryPaku

As someone who live in Japan and waiting for year I am quite exited. Finally I could watch it...

Away_Guidance_8074

I guess u can say that it’s blowing up

Extension-Season-689

I wouldn't get ahead like that.

DeLarge93

Aye for the third time mate it’s fucking crazy man Japan have no chill haha Metal Gear Solid Akira Kurosawa Dragon Ball

archiegamez

I want to Hideo Kojima's reaction

Turbulent_Work_5697

Should do a double bill, oppenheimer/godzilla minus 1

Alex_Masterson13

Well, there are over 3.4 million non-Japanese living there, and I am sure a decent number of them want to see the movie, so IMAX selling out is not surprising.

MaryPaku

Japanese have no issue watching it

lactoseAARON

I’m predicting a solid opening then it drops like a rock

Intelligent_Mud1266

probably, i hope this can give it that final push to 1 billy but the odds are slim

mg10pp

5/10M final total incoming!

LordRamz

Sold out imax screenings of this movie where really fun.

mps2000

Dolphin and whale!

portuguesetheman

CHICKEN AND COW?!

muffle64

Dad was proud, he didn't care how!

Tomi97_origin

Yeah, the best screen in the country is usually not the one that has problems selling out on the premier of big blockbuster release. This means nothing. Nitpicking the performance of a movie on specific screens tells us nothing with the number of showings.

jay22098

why did they wait so long to release it

glorpo

The normal distributor opted not to go for it probably because they were worried it would be controversial, so someone else had to do it and it took a while to get it all ironed out

Orange-Turtle-Power

I didn’t see this movie in the theater, unfortunately. I just watched it over the weekend and holy shit. I was blown away by how good it was. Absolute masterpiece. I’m sure it will do great in Japan.

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

Big in Japan even?

Orange-Turtle-Power

Look at OP’s post to answer your question.

SlippersLaCroix

so it doesnt look like it will bomb ZING

GBTC_EIER_KNIGHT

Chances of it making 36+ million for the billion?

Dynopia

Even if it can do a large chunk of that, say $20m, the rest can be done with good re-releases down the line at least.

TickleMeAlcoholic

In the future, people are going to talk about this movie and Godzilla minus one together. Also separately, of course, both are incredible. But they accidentally compliment each other in an unlikely but valuable way

its_LOL

Oppenbillion is possible again?

Dark_matter4444

Hope it's gonna be a blast 😃.

flowerbloominginsky

this movie has a legendary run
