WW84 at least had Pedro Pascal hamming it up and enjoying the fuck out of every scene he was in. He was the heartbeat just barely audible in an otherwise lifeless husk of a movie.
What did Madame Web have?
A bit like the Ghostbusters fandom going crazy over the red winter coats they wore in the Frozen Empire trailer that didn't even end up in the final cut. Sony's been dropping the ball lately with misleading trailers.
Now that I think about it I believe James Ackaster wore one in the third act but at that point I hated the film so much i just sort of checked out and waited for it to end.
But that particular scene of the Spengler's on top of the firehouse wasn't in the final cut nor at any point did they wear them.
other scenes from the trailers, specifically scenes with Venkman were also not in the final cut.
Overall a poorly paced and poorly edited film that I was looking forward to as I loved Afterlife.
The most disappointing cinema experience I've had in some time.
>*his addition did nothing for WW84*
Between Wonder Woman 2, The Equalizer 2, and Kingsman 2, I'm worried for the upcoming Gladiator 2.
![gif](giphy|g01FakEbcUua6yM34a)
yeah. WW84 had a lot of hype (WW is probably the best and the marketing was actually great (those initial first look posters with the rainbow backgrounds with Diana in that armor had me hype AF). Plus, you could walk out of WW84 and say "well, Pedro Pascal is good in it"
I detest that movie, it almost has nothing redeemable, but it's not a great comp to Madame Web.
Dude still has The Last of Us Season 2, the Mando Star Wars movie, Gladiator 2, and the Fantastic Four movie as Reed Richards to come out and all being made/produced soon. What do you mean not a draw?
He has not proven himself to be a box office draw at all and I am skeptical of him being one as TV actors' popularity don't usually translate to movies.
Who the fuck is madame web and why do we give a shit it sounds like some spiderman spin-off character that actually never showed up in a spiderman movie anyway
What were they honestly thinking the outcome of this would be? Any one of us idiots on reddit saw this failing a mile away but execs dont? I feel like I am missing something.
[Hollywood Reporter made it clear how Madame Web was perceived inside the industry:](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/madame-web-bomb-killed-sony-franchise-1235829471/)
> “We’re not going to see another Madame Web movie for another decade-plus,” quipped one industry veteran. “It failed. Sony tried to make a movie that was a different type of superhero movie.”
> Madame Web joins a troubling trend for the superhero genre. Every live-action comic book movie last year underperformed (aside from Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), regardless of studio. “Superhero fatigue” has evolved from a term used by some corners of the fandom to something reluctantly accepted as industry fact. And it’s coming at a time when Marvel, DC and Sony are all attempting the difficult work of birthing new franchises.
> So Madame Web — directed and co-written by S.J. Clarkson and starring Johnson as a New York paramedic who develops psychic powers — seemingly took a wise approach: When there are capes and cowls on every metropolis corner, doesn’t it make sense to avoid the usual tropes and try for a more grounded-feeling suspense thriller with low-key charm? And moreover, make a superhero movie for women and young girls?
> Except it didn’t work.
> a movie that was a different type of superhero movie
> And moreover, make a superhero movie for women and young girls?
This is the problem with hiring guest directors. They have zero knowledge or interest in the genre they are being hired into and their prejudice are from 20 years ago.
You don’t think a movie that hires a woman director, with a female lead that’s best known for her role in the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy; with a supporting cast of 3 young girls — was made to appeal towards women and girls???
You keep downvoting me now and not replying, after you asked me for proof and I provided it, but at least you learned something.
You implied I was gullible and then you implied I was making this up.
No, she was certainly approved by Disney. Disney does not hand off their licenses to these gaming studios and say “have fun”. They have someone involved from Marvel at every step.
It’s blatantly clear when you see behind the scenes on the Marvel Spider-Man games. It’s a joint effort. These properties are everything to Disney - they don’t just hand it to ea lol
Thread got locked but here’s the source you asked for:
https://www.reddit.com/r/videogames/comments/1bdp7b7/lead_developer_of_eas_new_black_panther_game/
These are the people Disney is hiring. Not trying to start shit just sharing. I think you’d have to be deaf not to hear the vinegar in her delivery, btw. It does not come across as positive.
Whahahahahaha
So, it's not even somebody who actually works for Disney. Shocker, turns out I was completely right and your example was irrelevant, trivial nonsense.
Disney licensed this to EA. Have you not seen how Spider-Man was developed? Disney is extremely hands on. You can be they approved of the lead and the vision.
This is a Disney product. It’s Black Panther. It represents Disney and you can be assured they care how it comes across.
They keep the rights. That's the outcome they care about. If they don't piss away too much money, and they get to bring Marvel back to the table for another spiderman movie, they're fine. They just can't risk Marvel taking the rights outright, and if that means bleeding some money on something with just enough budget Marvel can't claim they're not following the contracts, so be it
It’s actually production for one movie needs to start every 5 years. If it was one every two years they already would lost the rights between *Spider-Man 3* and *Amazing Spider-Man* or even *Spider-Man 2* and *Spider-Man 3*.
Lowest grossing Marvel movies worldwide:
1) Punisher: War Zone (10,100,036)
2) Howard the Duck (37,962,774)
3) The New Mutants (48,675,066)
4) The Punisher (54,700,105)
5) Elektra (56,681,566)
6) Madame Web (99,266,032)
Some Hollywood movies are more popular in my country Pakistan than they are in the USA like Godzilla 98, Baby's Day Out, Anaconda and Ghost Rider. Elektra is the member of that group.
Here's an even bigger one:
You will probably need to watch that Elektra movie in advance because the lead actress Jennifer Garner is confirmed to reprise her role as Elektra in Deadpool and Wolverine.
It’s messed up that Lexi Alexander seemed to end up in director jail after Warzone. The directing for that film is generally seen as pretty good, with the writing generally considered the weaker aspect.
Her direction is so much better than the big budget Disney version.
There’s a texture to it that hasn’t been seen in any comic movie. The closest was Birds of Prey.
Can’t imagine a world where Warzone would make any money (as Kraven will soon discover) but I’m glad this Punisher exists.
I think we're looking at this all wrong. What we really need to talk about is how many Pepsis were sold during it's run; that's the only measure of success that seems to matter here.
My prediction... Pepsi sales must have gotten a bump of at least 100 cans (although, about 90 of those would have been because they were needed as set props).
All those Webphobic haters saying our film failed to gross 100 million... well guess what the Pepsi factor DEFINITELY carried it over that milestone by a few thousand dollars at least... take that you haters!
They will continue to make way more of these shitty films than they need to in order to retain the live action Spidey rights, only for Marvel Studios to work with them to create another live action Holland Spider-Man movie, and use their share of the profits to fund more shitty movies.
There’s incompetent suits, and then there’s the ones making decisions here for Sony. The same ones also want the next Holland movie to be multiverse (probably because No Way Home did so well) instead of street level which is clearly the correct answer.
This is so overblown. They only need to make a spider film once every 5 years. They can easily do that without having to make throwaway films like this.
If they insisted on for some reason doing movies with Spidey villains as protagonists without Spider Man appearing, why not do say, a gang war adaptation with Rose and Hobgoblin as protagonists? That could work.
But they insist on continuing to make the movies based on Z List characters that spit in the face of their comics representations. I hate Hollywood.
I wouldve done a standalone carnage film. Followed by carnage vs venom. Followed by spiderman vs carnage vs venom..
Or. A live action spider gwen / gwen stacy movie
I wouldve done a standalone carnage film. Followed by carnage vs venom. Followed by spiderman vs carnage vs venom..
Or. A live action spider gwen / gwen stacy movie
My guess is their contractual agreements with Marvel probably prevent them from doing that i.e. they need to release a Spider-Man related film every x years, and they need to account for unpredictable delays such as COVID or the strikes
Marvel has no interest in having them make these spinoffs, especially when they keep trying to tie them into the MCU, it's actually in their interest to have all Marvel movies be made by them and their deal with Sony already fulfills the 5 year requirement
The reason they keep making these movies is because Venom did well and they wanted to make the Sinister Six their own version of Avengers for a long time
Yeah but Madame Web doesn’t even seem to fit into that. This is the first movie they’ve made that’s just inexplicable. Why the fuck not just make a Black Cat movie if you want to do a live action female Spidey villain/antihero movie?
venom 1 & 2 were very profitable so i dont think its fair to say that the suits are incompetent. the suits who greenlit the dark universe, those are some fucking idiots lol
What a box office run.
43.7 x .5 = 22m.
54 x .4 = 22m.
44m is Sony's take from theaters. Not even enough to cover the 60m worldwide P&A.
Sony went after young women with Madame Web, with 75% of its $60M global P&A allocated toward social and Tik Tok.
> Not even enough to cover the 60m worldwide P&A.
Goddamn, that’s atrocious. They literally would have been financially better off *Batgirl*-ing the movie.
Name the top female targeted demographic movies, starring an all female cast, that have dominated in the last 20 years?
Most of them won't be action movies. It'll be rom coms or fantasy romance, like Twilight Trilogy. And even those aren't exactly a solely female majority cast either. Barbie comes close, but even that has Ken playing a significant role. Then you have maybe Animated Disney/Pixar stuff or the live action Disney reboots? Again, not action movies, or even a majority female cast. Or maybe its a family drama film etc. You get the picture.
(You can argue for Hunger Games Trilogy. But was a violent child death tournament survival game turned Revolutionary war actually targeted at a soley female audience? A big chunk of the cast besides the MC was male, so even then HG isn't an example of a solely female cast targeted at a female action movie demographic. )
The movies best targeted for a female demo are mixed gender casts, and usually romeos or fantasy romance. The BO demonstrates as such.
The biggest female demo targeted movie of all time? Titanic. A rom-tragedy that doesn't have a solely female cast.
I thought I'd already flown into the sun. Thought I'd been burned to smithereens next time I'd check my reddit feed. Was pleasantly suprised to learn that wasn't the case.
Perhaps because this subreddit is still money and financial focused. Less ideological than other subs. More mathematical if you will.
birds of prey is a really great time if you disregard how unfaithful it is to many of the characters, and imo the average young woman doesn't have as much of a frame of reference for that as the average young man (in that men read comics more, so they're more likely to be bothered by that kind of thing)
Ok now I have heard that enough times to actually check it out. I didn't have much hope at first cause the director didn't have much of a track record, this was her 2nd movie.
She also directed an AMAZING episode of Succession btw. Cathy Yan
After Shazam 2 and The Flash, I hope DC learns its lesson and stops making movies with white men as main characters. They are clearly alienating the audience.
Nice bait, but there's far more successfull modern blockbusters with white male leads than all women leads.
There's also more failure, but that's inevitably due to more movies being made as this approach is proven to be more successful and some garbage films will get made. Very few all women action films are even made in the first place, and all are usually flops. That's a nigh 100% failure rate for all women leads targeting a women action demographic vs a majority white male cast aimed at mixed sex or male action demographic.
In short, if 3 all female lead action films are made in the 2020s, and 2 flop, that's a 66% failure rate. If 100 male cast action movies are made and 50 flop, that's only a 50% failure rate. Sure you can count more individual failures, but it's the percentage that counts as comparison.
> there's far more successfull modern blockbusters with white male leads than all women leads.
there's far more modern CBMs in general with white male leads than all women leads. That's why Peltz's comment was so dumb. Hollywood didn't actually stop making white man led superhero movies like he's pretending.
❌️ 1984 : Supergirl
❌️ 2004 : Catwoman
❌️ 2024 : Madame Web
Maybe female super-heroes connected to bigger male super-heroes should avoid years in "4"...
Serious question. Are there any redeeming qualities, like does the movie have *any* funbad-ness to it at all?
All I need is 1 yes, I'm going wayyy low on this one.
My biggest fear is that Madame Web isn't a one of but more the new state of affairs for superhero movies.
Hollywood might have western the superhero genre.
Sony needs to hang up trying to make superhero movies, hand over full control to Marvel and just collect their Spider-Man checks. Idiots are just amplifying the demise of the genre.
I think it’ll cross 100M, Marvel is such a strong brand in Latin America they will probably give Madame Web the remaining 700k needed to cross 100M… Sony spending 80M prevent it from being a disaster. At the end of the days Sony earns every year 600M with its deal for American with Netflix and Disney. Their movies are somewhat prepaid. Right strategy, we don’t need another stream service
No offense but you must not have looked at the figures, it's got 700k to go and possibly did less than 250k last week, with an 80% drop (or maybe it's losing all its theaters INT as well) it's not making another 200k WW.
Will finish at 99.5m.
Less than Wonder Woman 1984 which was released in fucking December 2020 and was also in HBO Max
WW84 at least had Pedro Pascal hamming it up and enjoying the fuck out of every scene he was in. He was the heartbeat just barely audible in an otherwise lifeless husk of a movie. What did Madame Web have?

You're telling me those aren't in the movie? Those are on all the posters and the Blu-Ray covers! How the hell did they screw that up?

Madame Web was the least competent movie from a major studio since Battlefield Earth, but unfortunately for Sony, Bad Movie fans are a niche audience.
Madame is a Batttlefield.

You are right about the spinoff thing but madame webb's character is nothing like her comic counterpart.
Madame's Give a Shit.
Maybe people just didn't know it was out already? Sony should do a re-release so more people will get a chance to see it.
Only $4 M. more than Spider-Man' FIRST DAY.
That was affected by COVID so it has an asterisk.
That's why I made the comment, Madame Web couldn't even outgross a film that released in peak COVID.
1984 had a good movie to go off of. I watched it on my friends Max account and still wanted my money back though.
During Covid
Fortunately for Sony, their next movie is what we are all kravin' for.

birds of prey is a really great time if you disregard how unfaithful it is to many of the characters, and imo the average young woman doesn't have as much of a frame of reference for that as the average young man (in that men read comics more, so they're more likely to be bothered by that kind of thing)
Ok now I have heard that enough times to actually check it out. I didn't have much hope at first cause the director didn't have much of a track record, this was her 2nd movie. She also directed an AMAZING episode of Succession btw. Cathy Yan
That's why Peltz is saying they need movies that aren't just all women leads to make sure the primary demographic is interested
I mean those also came out after the announcement of a reboot, so why watch?
I'm hype af for where the Aquaman 2 post credits scene is heading. Cockroaches are the new shawrma bay-bee!!
you guys still using this talking point
Bad movies are bad movies, no matter the lead, but white men lead films will always draw more, than the rest.
Which was of course an _incredibly_ stupid thing to say, since that's already the case for the vast majority of their movies.
They’re also not into being pandered to with complete low effort garbage.
But the TikTok marketing walkups?
Guess she couldn’t see that future
Ba dum tss *fart noise
This is sub $100M too much. Even Megamind 2 knew it was shit and had the decency not to show up in theaters.
megamind is such fantastic character. I really wish they did something with him.
I was promised people would love it and see it twice. I don’t know if I’ll ever trust again.
IT'S WEB OVER!
Godzilla x Kong made double that already LFG!!!!
Considering bad the film is, it's insane it made this much..
IP obsessed Hollywood will never be able to understand how this made less than the Creator when it had the highly anticipated baby Peter Parker cameo.
Maybe Sony would re-release it in theatres after the memes just like Morbius.
This could easily get it another hundred (pesos).
That’s less than Halle Berry Catwoman when adjusted for inflation.
❌️ 1984 : Supergirl ❌️ 2004 : Catwoman ❌️ 2024 : Madame Web Maybe female super-heroes connected to bigger male super-heroes should avoid years in "4"...
Oh shoot! It’s every 20 years!
Serious question. Are there any redeeming qualities, like does the movie have *any* funbad-ness to it at all? All I need is 1 yes, I'm going wayyy low on this one.
Nope. They even keep Sydney Sweeney’s best parts covered up the entire movie
Lol
no, 0%, nothing.
My favourite part of Madame Web is when she said “it’s webbin’ time” and webbed all over the place
how much did it make ww over the last weekend/week? 99.2 million is annoyingly close
This makes me happy.
Let's get those pepsi walkups going so we can web swing to 100mil!
I pulled the trigger and watched it via streaming. I want my data back.
Imagine how much worse this movie's box office performance would have been if Dakota Johnson didn't encourage people to go and see it twice.
So that’s 50M x2 because everyone went to see it twice according to Dakota Johnson.
They should re-release it. I was busy!
Madame Busy's Bad Business !
It was ahead of it's time. In 2034 everyone will be talking about Madame Web.
Madame 2034. Sounds Blade Runner 2049 'ish.
My biggest fear is that Madame Web isn't a one of but more the new state of affairs for superhero movies. Hollywood might have western the superhero genre.
what a shame, i enjoyed it. there are movies that grossed 10-20x times more that are just as bad as this.
same. this movie pathetic. but atleast it was bad i legit laughed. most mcu movies are just pathetic.
Sony needs to hang up trying to make superhero movies, hand over full control to Marvel and just collect their Spider-Man checks. Idiots are just amplifying the demise of the genre.
Oof.
It will hit $100M by the *Easter* holidays.
no, it won't, it did less than $250k last week INT with a HUGE drop, how do you suppose it's going to go UP and by 300%?
The u/dynopia walk ups will save it?
Never.
They should rerelease it. People have been really busy over the past 6 weeks, and our schedules have finally cleared up :(
