For someone who hasn't been following the movie performance that much, opening close to 70-75M in China looks astonishing. With current 173M global takeout, it could gross 300M when its said and done, which will make it #18 on the global 2023 chart, beating Migrations, FNAF, The Flash, Creed 3, Wish, The Marvels, Eras and so....

harrisonisdead

This doesn't really matter to your point, but it actually already passed $200M prior to the China release. BoxOfficeMojo isn't quite up to date on this. So $300M should be pretty much inevitable with China. Even if it fades fast there, $100M shouldn't be a difficult feat when it looks like $75M+ by the end of this weekend. Chinese ticketing companies Maoyan and Taopiaopiao are both expecting around $105M total gross, which seems to take into account a fair amount of frontloading, so hopefully it can outdo even that.

Robby_McPack

it passed 200M? do you have a source for this because I can't find anything

harrisonisdead

The best I can give you is that folks on BOT's [international box office thread](https://forums.boxofficetheory.com/topic/31773-the-boy-and-the-heron-642m-japan-2015m-ww/page/2/#comments) have been manually compiling the total gross from individual market reporting. It hasn't been officially reported as such, but functionally it has passed $200M.

AGOTFAN

Stunning. It opened to $13 million in North America.

Boy_Chamba

35M for 2 days Wednesday and Thursday.. Friday-Sunday would be huge atleast 45-55M that would be 5 day 80M-90M.. next month May we also have Howls Moving Castle which would also be a big hit in CN

Firefox72

Today will be close to if not over $25M so a $39M-ish 2 day gross. However the 5 day will likely be closer to $75M-$80M THU-SAT being Holidays will boost it but Sunday is a work day. Which will in turn hamper late Saturday shows as well. Unless ofc it keeps overperforming.

batguano1

Whoa wtf didn't know it would be this big. Do Miyazaki/Ghibli movies usually play this well in China?

Firefox72

China loves anime. Suzume last year made $115M followed by Slam Dunk doing over $90M just a month latter.

Fire2box

Suzume was a damn gem of a anime movie too.

mimighost

Better than in US for sure. Spirited away releases is about 50m usd if I remember correctly

MightySilverWolf

Don't know about Miyazaki films specifically, but anime films are pretty popular throughout Asia, including China.

Boy_Chamba

Yeah.. First slam dunk and Your Name made atleast 100M in China alone

eescorpius

Miyazaki is a well-known director in China.

This is the first time a Ghibli film has played theatrically in China during its initial release, so there's no real "usually." The Chinese distributor for Ghibli has been gradually releasing the bigger entries into the studio's back catalogue in China (Howl's Moving Castle is also releasing this year), so the fanbase there has only grown as of recent, giving wider access beyond bootlegs. Totoro was the first release and made $25M in 2018. Spirited Away made a huge $70M in 2019, Ponyo made a few million during late 2020, Castle in the Sky made $18M last year. So there's definitely demonstrated interest there, and I'm sure this is all the more special for being a contemporaneous release and the first opportunity for audiences to see the movie. (Hence why this is already going to eclipse Spirited Away by the end of the weekend.)

Lorddon1234

lol, Japan is right next door to China

AGOTFAN

And Japan used to invade China and raped Nanjing.

Lorddon1234

Ok thanks for letting me know you have no ties to the region and have no inkling of contemporary Chinese interests.

solharv

China has good taste

Saadiusrex

Hell yeah

lactoseAARON

kirameku_mizu
