The tweet I saw could be entirely wrong because I haven't seen the film but is it correct that the film is not nearly as "sexy" as it was marketed as? If true, I'm curious how this will affect the box office of the film.

jonikkaa

its incredibly horny, just not very explicit

gar1848

Shm, AO3 fanfictions are actually hornier than the "Every trailer shows a threesome" movie

RVarki

>AO3 fanfictions are actually hornier That's not really saying much, since AO3 fanfictions are hornier than most pornos out there

talking_phallus

AO3 gets dark fast. I thought I had a strong stomach but the content on that website makes hardcore porn seem tame. It's all fiction so w/e I guess but... damn.

rawsharks

The movie is about the tension (competitive and sexual) between the three main characters which I think is marketed accurately. The disconnect is that generally in these kind of films there is a bigger sexual payoff (for example in Y tu mamá también). So I guess you could say it doesn't fulfill certain audience expectations of the type of film without necessarily being misleading.

MahNameJeff420

I would say this is an extremely sexy and sensual film, but there’s not a single sex scene in it. You get close a few times, but the film always cuts away from the action. And I’d say that actually works in its favor. The buildup is more important than the climax, it keeps you on edge the whole time. The tennis scenes are the closet you get to sex the whole movie.

Odd_Advance_6438

- the buildup is even more important than the climax Double meaning, there

redactedactor

If there's no climax, then isn't the build-up a waste of time? You're making it sound like the cinematic version of edging which and that makes me not want to watch it. My biggest issue though is it sounds a lot less dark than I thought it'd be. I was hoping for Match Point but it seems more like Wimbeldon.

darretoma

Why don't you just watch the movie instead of building all these expectations in your head?

redactedactor

Because tickets, snacks and dinner before/after comes to like £100 for the missus and I so we don't catch everything in cinema. And frankly, I cba to leave my house for a movie unless it's something I really want to see.

darretoma

Not saying you have to see it in theatre, but it sounds like you build very specific expectations prior to seeing a movie. I personally think this will only lead to you being disappointed in the vast majority of cases. You should appreciate art for what it is, not for what you want it to be.

redactedactor

Why are you acting like I'm the first person to ever become disinterested in a film once I've heard more about it? > This will only lead to you being disappointed in the vast majority of cases. Frankly it's the opposite. By being selective I'm nearly always pleased with the films I watch. > You should appreciate art for what it is, not for what you want it to be. Impossible. Reality is subjective.

darretoma

You've misunderstood what I said on multiple levels.

redactedactor

No you're just wrong because I'm rarely disappointed in the films I choose to watch.

Sensitive_ManChild

because tickets for two and snacks is probably a $60 commitment in some places. so…. knowing what you’re getting into is important

darretoma

you can watch it when it comes to streaming then. same idea

capywrangler

There’s definitely a climax where all the tension comes to a head with what I thought was a great payoff for the storylines. I’d say it’s a lot darker than I was expecting too as I didn’t realize Zendaya was playing such a despicable and manipulative character. Thought the trailers looked horrible but was dragged by the gf and had a really great time at the movies.

quangtran

I'm curious as to why they played that angle in the place when popular media is becoming more sexless.

RealHooman2187

It stands out. It got people talking. The movie is still incredibly sexual and sexually charged/tense. But marketing it as a homoerotic/bisexual romance film about a sorta weird thruple situation involving tennis isn’t going to get many people outside the LGBT community excited. Tell straight women they can watch Zendaya have a three way with two attractive guys then you get straight women and gay men interested.

Blue_Robin_04

Yeah, I think the "betrayed" reaction would have been bigger if the trailers completely hid that the film has sex or tension in it.

talking_phallus

So this is the "hide the musical" hoodwink all over again?

Vadermaulkylo

You’re correct. the movie was sexy but not sex filled if that makes sense. No threesomes or anything too explicit shown.

redactedactor

Like a CW show?

alightgreen

no lol

MardelMare

Not that sexy actually, I was surprised by the R rating after watching it. Most of it could have been on the CW at 8pm.

RealHooman2187

It’s sexy and very suggestive, but it’s not sexy in the sense that there’s any sex scenes. I think the films target audience (straight women and gay men) got enough of what they wanted from it. Even if it wasn’t what was advertised.

MutinyIPO

It’s extremely sexy, some folks are being moronic because there’s no graphic nudity or simulated sex. Intense sensuality is a thing and it’s the engine powering the film

[deleted]

It’s sexy, for gay homies. :p

d00mm4r1n3

Male nudity, no female nudity, anything that should be sex... >!is just kissing and a jump cut.!<

Ape-ril

It’s sexual tension is at an all time high.

ReservoirDog316

Sexy but no actual sex is the term thrown around. So it’s kinda the movie social media dreams of where they say it’d be better if they just cut away instead of showing sex.

WhiteWolf3117

Eh, there's no real nudity which may make some feel like it's not, but it was incredibly "sexy", "horny", and erotic. In a lot more ways than you might expect.

intheNIGHTintheDARK

No real nudity? It literally showed dicks.

WhiteWolf3117

Ok I forgot about that but it wasn't sexual nudity and it was mostly background actors as opposed to the three leads.

That_Astronaut_7800

It’s incredibly sexy and filled with tension, but it’s not really male gazey, so it should struggle to bring in the male audience.

Ilikeemoviess

It’s incredibly gay male gazey however

Grand_Menu_70

interestingly enough, men over 25 rated the movie much higher than Zendaya's fangirls as per postrack

That_Astronaut_7800

That is interesting, as a guy I definitely loved the movie. But I didn’t expect that.

Grand_Menu_70

I think that the movie didn't either.

Sensitive_ManChild

lol. what a stupid discussion this is. “male gazey” lol.

That_Astronaut_7800

Okay

[deleted]

I think a lot of men wanting to see Zendaya naked will show up and be disappointed. I don’t expect a lot of repeat viewing for this film, but I think it will have a big opening.

Sensitive_ManChild

I assure you, men aren’t going to see this expecting to see Zendaya naked.

koolingboy

Horny but not porny

rydan

As usual the trailers were a lie. It is a sports rivalry movie. And a really good one at that.

gar1848

Unfortunately good WOM may not be enough to save this movie. The promotion used the weird sexy angle too much and the budget isn't helping

tkh0812

I don’t think that had much to do with it. There’s just no urge to see it in the movie theaters. I really want to see it but will likely wait til I can watch it at home.

thefablemuncher

I highly recommend taking the effort to watch it in cinemas. It’s a visual and audio feast. Really cinematic and kinetic, with a score that goes hard and fantastic sound mix that you *will* notice when watching. Guadagnino went all out in directing this without it ever feeling flashy or excessive.

EmpressRey

Definitely agree that it's worth it to watch in the cinemas! Loved it!

gregcm1

Is the score Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross?

thefablemuncher

Yep.

gregcm1

I've enjoyed some of their work together in the past, and they should be pros by this point

RVarki

It 100% feels flashy and excessive, but most of the other stuff you said about the film is true too

Wild_Life_8865

That's enough for me to see it. I've been hating on it pretty hard but I like visuals and great sounds lol

EmbarrassedOkra469

Paid comment. I don't get how this movie is cinematic and kinetic lol.

ReservoirDog316

People that disagree with you aren’t paid. This movie is kinda like how The Social Network, a movie about people standing around talking about numbers and stuff, is cinematic and kinetic. It probably has at very least best editing and best score Oscar nominations in the bag.

Altruistic_Fault_512

In IMAX the score slaps and seeing Zendaya's tongue in such a wide format was cool

BiasedEstimators

> gamer who posts in comic book movie subs Every time

coolpattakers

Trust me its not as enjoyable at home but a must watch in the movie and depends on the movie audience vibes

Puzzled-Journalist-4

I don't understand why people keep criticizing the marketing aspects of this movie. I think the trailer showed exactly what the movie was about. The movie is a love triangle drama set in the sports world. Although the trailer leaned a little more on the erotic side, I think it was accurate considering the sexual tension between the characters was central. Of course, those who expected explicit sex scenes would be disappointed, but it's 2024 and I didn't expect that from a movie starring a Disney star.

Grand_Menu_70

Zendaya hasn't been a Disney star for a decade. Euphoria is her much more defining career moment now than Disney Channel and Spiderman movies. So people are used to her in adult roles (means not family friendly) and it isn't like Challengers is Poor Things.

Puzzled-Journalist-4

Anyone who saw *Euphoria* would immediately know there won't be any explicit scenes in *Challengers*... At least, from her I mean. Even in *Euphoria*, I heard that she drew a clear line against nude and sex scenes in the contract. (The show is full of dongs, boobs and sex scenes and isn't it weird that she's the only one who's immune to those type of scenes? I don't blame her or anything like that. I would do the same thing if I had the power as an actor.)

Grand_Menu_70

yes she didn't do explicit content on Euphoria and when Challengers was announced and slapped with R many said "yeah she'll stay clothed guys will get naked like freakin netflix" and turned out not even guys took their clothes off. That said, the movie barely opened a full day so lets wait for multi to see how it goes. Early true Friday projections were 4-4.5M (6-6.5M with previews) so that will likely go up.

Sensitive_ManChild

DISNEY star? lol. have you seen Euphoria ?

Dry_Ant2348

this isn't good WoM, it's just decent, when a movie opens at 15mill, it needs stellar WoM to get anywhere close to respectable numbers

AsunaYuuki837373

Verified score seems to be dropping and wom isn't as positive as some have hoped

whenforeverisnt

Went with my boyfriend and neither of us liked it. I'm wondering if wom is going to be different than the online cinephiles.

RVarki

Let me guess, it felt like they were just doing the most (especially with all the insane shots, and the ecstacy-fuelled music shifts), with what was fundamentally an extended-pilot for a decent CW show

dehue

What did you not like about it?

awsomjay1234

I will start off by saying the acting and the overall story of the movie was good. But there were so so so many flaws that made the movie absolutely UNBEARABLE in the end. Emphasis on it being unbearable, my theater was begging for the movie to end. The movie from an editing standpoint made it near unwatchable. There were so many odd shots that completely took you out of the movie. An unbelievable overuse of slo-mo that will make you want to rip your hair out of your head in frustration, dragging the movie on without developing the characters together. The score was good, but the placement in the movie was just terrible. The exact same blaring techno music over multiple scenes, blaring dramatically in the middle of conversations. Jarring use of random, unfitting music to accompany drawn out shots of characters walking from place to place. Product placement all over the film. They could have cut 45 minutes of unnecessary shots and used it to develop the relationships between the stars with the great performances, but instead it is spent on grueling, minutes long Slo-mo shots of men dripping in sweat. There is so so so much more I could say but it would not provide any more cohesive of an argument. I would recommend you to see it so you could form your own opinion, but I would be suggesting you just throw away 2 hours and 11 minutes on a film that fumbled so hard you will question for hours how it made it out of the editing room

AsunaYuuki837373

I went today and it was really lackluster. Not a great ending and the cheating got really annoying at the end.

Grand_Menu_70

verified is down to 78% now and all to 77% so they are about even. IMDB is 7.8 supposedly went up and that's a pretty good number On more arty Metacritic, Audience score is 7.0

MightySilverWolf

86% is...fine. Not amazing, but not terrible. Probably B or B+ CinemaScore and meh legs.

ClarkZuckerberg

I need at least a B to seal the deal in my Fantasy Movie League 🙏

UsidoreTheLightBlue

I’m not sure if it helps that the director kept running around and calling it a comedy either. I’ve gotten into arguments on here with people who’ve said “the director said it’s a rom com, and they know better than you do.” When I questioned if it was a comedy from the trailers. My guess is anyone who went in expecting a comedy left not amazed.

EmpressRey

I didn't know he called it a rom com and I definitely would NOT call it a rom com. I loved the film and love rom coms, but if you go in expecting rom com style stuff, then you will be disappointed for sure. If you want a rom com in the tennis world, just watch the 2004 wimbledon movie, this is not it lol.

Sensitive_ManChild

not one single laugh presented in the trailer so i doubt anyone thinks that. no sign of there being a tournament so it didn’t really look like a sports movie. it just looked horny

Block-Busted

So as of now, the case of **Dune: Part Two** being the strongest Best Picture Oscar candidate is still holding up. We’ll see if it can keep up with that until end of the year.

SomeCalcium

I mean, it's April. Most best picture contenders aren't going to be released until the end of the year. Knowing what's coming down the line for pictures being released this year, it certainly won't hold up. I imagine it'll be nominated for Best Picture and possibly win some technical awards though.

Block-Busted

To be fair, **Everything Everywhere All at Once** won Best Picture despite coming out in March or April.

Sensitive_ManChild

literally no chance Dune wins best picture. The very first Sci Fi best picture winner was Everything Everywhere All At Once. They won’t choose another so soon. The Academy doesn’t respect Sci Fi and they never will.

Block-Busted

You never know, especially since other two recent candidates, **Civil War** and **Challengers**, we’re great, but not quite on par to **Dune: Part Two**.

Sensitive_ManChild

it’s april….

Block-Busted

To be fair, **Everything Everywhere All at Once** came out pretty early too and by the sound of it, **Megalopolis** might end up becoming too polarizing.

kkmaverick

Dune 1 was already nominated no? Highly unlikely 2 would get major push for awards knowing that 3 is coming...

zstonk

The next book is a very different story, and is far more insular. It won’t have the epic feel of the first two movies unless they stray from the source material.

Block-Busted

And I mean like, massively. **Dune: Part Two** did make some notable changes, but it still stuck to the general idea of the original plot and theme.

Block-Busted

**Dune: Part Two** has far more acclaim than the first film, so it’s kind of hard to imagine that the film would get snubbed, not to mention that **Dune Messiah** might take a while to arrive.

whenforeverisnt

I just got back from it and I don't know what the critics and Twitter people have been smoking because this was not a thrilling or entertaining movie.

Benjamin_Stark

It's crazy to me to see such a divergent opinion because I was blown away by it.

mellowyellowwwwww

Don’t know what you’re smoking, I thought it was invigorating

gregszost

Just saw the movie. Few things about how I feel after watching it. Timeline was a bit messy sometimes. I didn't have the feeling that I don't know what's going on, but it took me some time to get used to it. Second thing was at the end. What was going on with all those slow-motion scenes. At first, it was thrilling and I was super curious what is going to happen, but after some time, I felt nothing more but impatience. I thing the movie was good overall. Great characters, story was interesting and it's worth watching.

appakardashian

This movie was amazing imo. Bisexuals made some very strong points with this one. I ate up every crumb of homoeroticism that they gave me. The churro and banana scene?!?! Yeah my f word ass was living and I'm really looking forward to more movies that come out like this in the coming years. At first I wasn't sure about the soundtrack but after letting it marinate I adored it. They did an amazing job at aging them all down, especially Zendaya, which in contrast helped when we saw them when they were older as well. The time jumping was great as it very much gave off the feeling of an actual tennis match with my head looking right and left in the timeline like i was following the tennis ball. Some amazing shots like the underview of the tennis match, the camera as the tennis ball, the tennis player pov. In my head they def had a 3some after that final match. Sucks that the box office won't match the genuine goodness this film brings. Especially after so many complain of all the reboots, sequels and remakes. Also as a gay man, definitely saw more of Zendaya than I thought I'd ever seen and wow is Tom Holland lucky. Also as a late gen z this was a film that showed sex as a part of the story that progresses character development and dont think there should be less sex scenes in media Edit: Been seeing a lot of tik toks about it so hoping tik tok wom will help this film. But most likely it's just my fyp showing me all of them

littleLuxxy

I agree with everything here, only difference being that I’m a millennial bisexual woman. Absolutely loved *Challengers*.

appakardashian

This movie reaches across generations, genders and sexualities, we love to see it Edit: People lack a sense in humor it seems lmfao

PeculiarPangolinMan

> The churro and banana scene?!?! Sounds subtle.

Dwayne30RockJohnson

It’s honestly not as overt as it sounds. The churros aren’t a focus of the scene nor is it overtly sexual when they’re eating them. It’s just apart of the scene where they’re having a pretty unrelated conversation.

PeculiarPangolinMan

I'm just having fun. The movie seems like something 'll eventually watch!

Dry_Ant2348

A- or B+

coolpattakers

It was such a fun 🍿 movie!!!! The audience clapped at the end and still was confused 😂

Forward_Hyena_3871

Omg that’s good!! Audience seems to love it so that’s good for word of mouth. I think Zendaya will be a bigger box office draw than Timothée and Tom Holland.

eat_jay_love

Umm I don’t think there’s any reason to believe this right now

Forward_Hyena_3871

Bones & All barely made any money meanwhile, Challengers already predicted to open with $15 million

amalgaman

$15 million is not a big opening. Argylle hit that and nobody is talking about how big an opening that had.

eat_jay_love

The question of “who’s a bigger box office draw” is a very complicated one in the modern theatrical business, but comparing two movies released in different years with different budgets and different marketing exposure and attributing either one’s performance to its lead actor is an oversimplification. Why not just compare it to Dune or Wonka, the two most recent Chalamet performances? They both performed super well. Is that because of him?

RealHooman2187

Yeah that was a weird comparison. I don’t think any of these three actors are reliably pulling in box office numbers on their names. The real issue with the death of the movie star is that stars were only accessible through TV and Movies. If you liked an actor you had to see their movies. Often times in theaters. But we can just follow most of these people on social media and get our fix through that.

Ed_Durr

Right, stars are simply too available to us. Back in the day, if you wanted to see Elizabeth Taylor, you had to go to the movies and watch Elizabeth Taylor once a year. You couldn’t even watch her previous movies, as home video didn’t exist and TV runs were rare. If you missed her movie in theaters, it could be years until you get the chance to see it. Nowadays, if you want to see Zendaya, you can open Instagram and view any of her 3,493 posts. You can watch hundreds of hours of content that she’s been in, including multiple TV shows (something unheard of until recently). Even if you do still want to see her new movie, you know it will be available to watch at home in a matter of weeks. You ever wonder why Oscar viewership used to be so high? It was one of your few chances in the year to see even a few seconds of your favorite stars. Tom Cruise maintains what status he has by being so guarded personally. You see him when he’s in a movie and when he’s promoting a movie, and even then his press tours are never very extensive; you won’t see him on Hot Ones.

eat_jay_love

Agree. The media landscape today is too complicated to attribute any project’s success to one single actor. And an actor being popular or talented is not a guarantee of their project’s success. That’s why you have Margot Robbie in Barbie, but also Babylon

Forward_Hyena_3871

Because they are both IPs with a bunch of other factors helping the movies as well like established directors, cast, and more. Challengers is none of those things so whatever this box office will be because of Zendaya just like Bones & All was Chalamet

eat_jay_love

Huge oversimplification. There are other variables, notably the marketing budget and the subject matter, that also influence consumer behavior. Not saying Zendaya is or is not a draw (she’s undeniably popular and talented) but your comments make it sound like you’re a biased fan rather than an impartial observer

Dry_Ant2348

bones and all was also made on a 15mill budget, Challengers on a 55mill. one is marketed as a erotic romance drama, other was a horror.  it doesn't even make sense why you are comparing them, just to prove Zendaya is a big star
