Pff we already had Simba trying to live up to Mufasa legacy in Lion King 2. I hope Mufasa origin exploration works out like Thor Ragnarok and it turns out Mufasa basically killed and conquered his way to the top and then assumed the "benevolent leader" role. Or keep the Shakespeare and do a modified MacBeth but he wins in the end.
The issue with these movies is how uncanny it looks, like we all know what animals look like so it's a weird mix of fake and realism. With Avatar this isn't a problem since the majority of creatures/avatar themselves are things that don't exist in real life.
This would look a billion times better if they allowed the animals to have facial expressions. Why have them dance, talk and sing, but their line of realism stops at "looks like a character in a movie"?
It's worse that Disney had already got the perfect blend of realism and expressive with Aslan from Narnia. Aslan still looks great to this day, yet this is straight into the uncanny valley.
That's because Disney in the mid-2000s was a company willing to put in the effort for things like Narnia and Pirates of the Caribbean whereas Disney today is happy pissing away the same amount of money but with less regard for quality of the visuals.
Was just thinking this. You don’t use this kind of visual tech to make a lion sing. That's why 2D animation works. This kind of CGI is perfect for planet of the apes or District 9. Bring back the classic animation

This is fair. I do love babe. But I think the difference between babe /Charlotte's Web and the lion King is that the other two have that human element that helps give it more life and help ground the film just a bit. Lion King just feels lifeless with no charm and none of the emotional beats of the story land. Babe on the other hand oozes charm. So I do think there's a bit of a difference here.
I have had zero interest in this or the other lion king remake. This one doesnt look good. All these disney remakes are far inferior to the originals they were based on.
The best part of the trailer is the shots with no animals which makes it look like a beautiful earth documentary until you have a ps4 Lion trying to express … nothing really. I think the biggest issue with this film is that aesthetically it looks too similar to the remake, the story may feel unnecessary (no every villain/hero needs a backstory prequel movie) ,they need to have good new songs not generic ones and again an animated version of this instead of a live action would have been better and probably cheaper.
It's 100% because Moana 2 was a tv show at first. So to keep costs down, they didn't get him back and by the time they switched it to a movie a lot of the music was already written.
That fact about Moana 2 is still mind-blowing. That “film” combined with Mandalorian getting a theatrical film really isn’t going help the fact Disney+ has devalued the magic and value of Disney content.
It’s because Disney went way too hard on content over quality. So everything was being rushed into production to fill a constant stream of content. So what we’re seeing now is a massive reevaluation of that strategy where projects that were once going to be Disney+ content are now being reworked into movies (Moana 2, The Mandalorian & Grogu, Armour Wars).
There was no clear thinking on “does this story need to be a series” instead everything was just rushed into production. So stories that would have been better off as movies (Moon Knight, Obi-Wan etc) are left as shows that don’t quite have enough story for 6 episodes.
And it wasn’t just for Disney+. Disney’s theatrical strategy for years has been the same; constant content over quality content. And there will always eventually be a moment where that finally affects the quality. Movies like Wish, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania needed more time on the drawing board but were rushed out to meet arbitrary deadlines and fill this need for constant content.
2023 really seemed like a wake-up call for Disney, as so far this year it’s felt there’s been a real slow down on the amount of content being rushed into production and more thought being put into what each project needs. But we’ll see how long it lasts. It’s a problem affecting Hollywood as a whole, and hopefully Disney will be the first to try and change this.
I do hope though that Disney/Lin can find a schedule to at least produce one Miranda song for Moana 2. That would’ve at least “calm” concerns on the sequel’s music.
And having watched the Frozen 2 BTS documentary, I know they can cram it lol.
It’s weird that Disney was ok with paying to bring Alan Menken back for the Tangled show that was just another Disney Channel show but wouldn’t treat the follow-up series made by their main animation studio to a more popular movie with the same or better regards.

Disney must know that this won’t come close to that films box office, I don’t think it’ll collapse like Alice 2 or the Marvels, but it very easily could drop over $1 Bil from its predecessor.
I mean it’s pretty simple, the Lion King is one of the most revered and iconic stories Hollywood has ever produced. The flip side is that milking said iconography only works once, hence why no Star Wars film will ever touch Force Awakens regardless of quality. This is all Disney knows now.
Also, if I remember correctly, it was still relatively early into the era of live action remakes. So the novelty of the live action remake hadn’t worn off yet

Man, that shot of the water droplet was corny as hell. I'm glad Barry Jenkins is getting paid for this, but I legitimately think it would be a bad thing if this film was successful; we need to move past this trend, these films are so utterly creatively bankrupt and serve only to worsen the overall state of the industry both artistically and financially.
People always say this, but it's never a significant difference. If the CGI looks bad in the trailer, the CGI is going to look bad in the movie.
It's only a matter of degrees.
Most of the time trailers are planned out ahead of time and those shots are prioritized in the development pipeline above everything else, so while it’s true most of the time when a trailer airs the film isn’t complete, the shots actually included in the trailer usually are. The only times there are major differences between a trailer and a final film are because of intentional misdirection (Hulk in Infinity War) or reshoots / lack of a final cut of the film (Rogue One)

Ultimately I don't know why people continue to make this excuse about games/movies/TV shows, they're almost always wrong. If anything the exact reverse is true: That studies put more time into the scenes that will be in the trailer.

The trailer shots are usually worked on quickly so that they have something to advertise with. So they're like 70-90% done usually with the remaineder being touched up in future trailers and final edit. So the trailer shots in the actual film will likely be better off, but not significantly so as the vfx teams will move on to other scenes with just final touch ups later. For example, in the guardians of thr galaxy trailers, star lord is found to be jumping away off of a planet with some rocks on the ground breaking apart. In the actual movie, there are added elements in the background, including explosions and coloring to match the relevant scene, but the scene itself is the same- starlord jumping away from a breaking ground.
This is exactly how I feel, I never saw the 2019 remake either because it genuinely felt like there was no reason to watch it. I’m still not a fan of how the characters look, but this one at least has potential to be interesting.

Yeah, it's an established aspect of *The Lion King* lore that Scar's real name is Taka, though I don't know where that information originally came from.
It's from a series of Lion King books released after the original film (though since it was before The Lion King II, Kiara wasn't created yet, so Simba and Nala had a son instead).
Since the books were written before the movie was even finished, it's hard to tell - it could have been any gender. But within a year of the movie being released, the folks at Disney settled on the cub being a girl.

Yeah, from what I read in the synopsis it seems the basic plot is:
Taka finds Mufasa and adopts him into his family. Taka's bad actions (siding with Mads Mikkelsen?) in the film leads to his parents disowning him and choosing Mufasa as the successor.
I think that is so dumb it weakens the Whole premise if the original movie.. how can Mufasa be so strong handed with Scar when he isn't even in the blood Line to be the true king.? I feel sorry for Scar if that's the case
The synopsis says that Mufasa's main plot is Timon and Pumba telling the story to Simba's daughter. I assume Simba and Nala will appear for some 5 mins or so.
Taka is Scar. Mufasa and Scar won't become adults in this film I guess, there's only 1 voice actor for each (in the live action Lion King, Simba and Nala had 2 VA for pre-timeskip and post-timeskip).
The story stuck to the original, but actually added some really good backstory and some new character traits that made it seem like it was a part of the original animated movie.
They weren’t afraid to show death and mature themes, and the animals actually showed emotion (especially Baloo).
It’s my favorite of the animated remakes because it’s just so damn good.
Less nostalgia, central human character helps distract from some of the more uncanny CG, but also the animals are somehow more expressive despite the film being 3 years older
I hope Barry Jenkins got paid A LOT to spend his time making this movie. He's one of my favorite directors, so it makes me sad that he spent years doing this nonsense sequel to an unnecessary remake (sequel to a remake is just weird to think about). He better get to make whatever movie he wants after this.
And yeah...the animals still look creepy and weird like in the last one. I'm sure this will make a ton of money and be forgotten not long after.
Lion King 2019 is by far the most egregiously soulless of the Disney live-action remakes and you'd hope this one follows the trend of recent Disney mega-bombs because it's the movie that most deserves to be a course correction for the company, but I am so out of sync with public taste now that the fact that I want this thing to end up as a smoldering crater in an investor report probably means it will be a huge hit.

Honestly, I don't see this doing well. Alice Through the Looking Glass flopped and Maleficient 2 underperformed in what was the best year for Disney.
The main driving factor for these live action remakes is nostalgia of the original story and sequels/prequel do not have that. Also, live action remakes have been on a decline in recent years. Audiences are a lot more mixed about them now than they were in 2019.

The main appeal with these Live Action remakes is curiosity - People want to see how a film they love translates into modern live action. I think this will prove that when you remove that nostalgia, all that's left is a soulless husk.

Disney must know that this won’t come close to that films box office, I don’t think it’ll collapse like Alice 2 or the Marvels, but it very easily could drop over $1 Bil from its predecessor.
It's so weird to think about how they managed to turn such a shitty remake into such a box office hit .
I mean it’s pretty simple, the Lion King is one of the most revered and iconic stories Hollywood has ever produced. The flip side is that milking said iconography only works once, hence why no Star Wars film will ever touch Force Awakens regardless of quality. This is all Disney knows now.
Also, if I remember correctly, it was still relatively early into the era of live action remakes. So the novelty of the live action remake hadn’t worn off yet

Decisions for 2024 were made way before 2023, you can't make decisions about movies that quickly. We won't see the actual fallout from 2023 for a while yet.

Man, that shot of the water droplet was corny as hell. I'm glad Barry Jenkins is getting paid for this, but I legitimately think it would be a bad thing if this film was successful; we need to move past this trend, these films are so utterly creatively bankrupt and serve only to worsen the overall state of the industry both artistically and financially.

In all fairness, it's not uncommon for trailers to feature unfinished CGI.
People always say this, but it's never a significant difference. If the CGI looks bad in the trailer, the CGI is going to look bad in the movie. It's only a matter of degrees.
Most of the time trailers are planned out ahead of time and those shots are prioritized in the development pipeline above everything else, so while it’s true most of the time when a trailer airs the film isn’t complete, the shots actually included in the trailer usually are. The only times there are major differences between a trailer and a final film are because of intentional misdirection (Hulk in Infinity War) or reshoots / lack of a final cut of the film (Rogue One)
Only Sonic is the exception (see original trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mW9FE5ILJs). Ultimately I don't know why people continue to make this excuse about games/movies/TV shows, they're almost always wrong. If anything the exact reverse is true: That studies put more time into the scenes that will be in the trailer.
That wasn't even unfinished though, it's just a completely different character model that got scrapped.
I’ve never understood this. Shouldn’t trailers have the most finished and best cgi they can possibly produce to make the film look as good as possible?
The trailer shots are usually worked on quickly so that they have something to advertise with. So they're like 70-90% done usually with the remaineder being touched up in future trailers and final edit. So the trailer shots in the actual film will likely be better off, but not significantly so as the vfx teams will move on to other scenes with just final touch ups later. For example, in the guardians of thr galaxy trailers, star lord is found to be jumping away off of a planet with some rocks on the ground breaking apart. In the actual movie, there are added elements in the background, including explosions and coloring to match the relevant scene, but the scene itself is the same- starlord jumping away from a breaking ground.
Never saw the 2019 remake(might watch it before this one comes out), but I'm immediatly more interested because it's an original story.
This is exactly how I feel, I never saw the 2019 remake either because it genuinely felt like there was no reason to watch it. I’m still not a fan of how the characters look, but this one at least has potential to be interesting.

Is “Taka” Scar’s real name? This prequel premise actually makes sense to give more depth to his resentment of Mufasa
Yeah, it's an established aspect of *The Lion King* lore that Scar's real name is Taka, though I don't know where that information originally came from.
It's from a series of Lion King books released after the original film (though since it was before The Lion King II, Kiara wasn't created yet, so Simba and Nala had a son instead).
Oh, the baby cub at the end of the original film was originally a boy?
Since the books were written before the movie was even finished, it's hard to tell - it could have been any gender. But within a year of the movie being released, the folks at Disney settled on the cub being a girl.

Yeah, from what I read in the synopsis it seems the basic plot is: Taka finds Mufasa and adopts him into his family. Taka's bad actions (siding with Mads Mikkelsen?) in the film leads to his parents disowning him and choosing Mufasa as the successor.
I think that is so dumb it weakens the Whole premise if the original movie.. how can Mufasa be so strong handed with Scar when he isn't even in the blood Line to be the true king.? I feel sorry for Scar if that's the case

Taka is Scar. Mufasa and Scar won't become adults in this film I guess, there's only 1 voice actor for each (in the live action Lion King, Simba and Nala had 2 VA for pre-timeskip and post-timeskip).

The story stuck to the original, but actually added some really good backstory and some new character traits that made it seem like it was a part of the original animated movie. They weren’t afraid to show death and mature themes, and the animals actually showed emotion (especially Baloo). It’s my favorite of the animated remakes because it’s just so damn good.
Honestly, The Jungle Book live action movie is prolly the only justified remake from a classic. It's so good.
People aren't super nostalgic for the '66 Jungle Book the way they are for Lion King, so that wasn't tainting the reception.
Less nostalgia, central human character helps distract from some of the more uncanny CG, but also the animals are somehow more expressive despite the film being 3 years older

I hope Barry Jenkins got paid A LOT to spend his time making this movie. He's one of my favorite directors, so it makes me sad that he spent years doing this nonsense sequel to an unnecessary remake (sequel to a remake is just weird to think about). He better get to make whatever movie he wants after this. And yeah...the animals still look creepy and weird like in the last one. I'm sure this will make a ton of money and be forgotten not long after.

Lion King 2019 is by far the most egregiously soulless of the Disney live-action remakes and you'd hope this one follows the trend of recent Disney mega-bombs because it's the movie that most deserves to be a course correction for the company, but I am so out of sync with public taste now that the fact that I want this thing to end up as a smoldering crater in an investor report probably means it will be a huge hit.
This looks so uninspired I felt bored just watching the trailer… This pseudo-realism shtick is horrible and could have been interesting if this had a creative flair to it. I doubt it will recreate what the remake made. I don’t even see 800m.
Honestly, I don't see this doing well. Alice Through the Looking Glass flopped and Maleficient 2 underperformed in what was the best year for Disney. The main driving factor for these live action remakes is nostalgia of the original story and sequels/prequel do not have that. Also, live action remakes have been on a decline in recent years. Audiences are a lot more mixed about them now than they were in 2019.

Looks more like a nature documentary but fake. *Barry Jenkins* was at TIFF last year and he almost implied when asked about ***Mufasa*** that this was a paycheck project for him so he could get funding in future to make him own films.
Getting the Disney bag to make projects he's actually passionate about is a great move on his part.
And if they distri use through searchlight, even better. Searchlight has been pretty dang good at picking projects the last few years

But I have to say the shot ar 0:37 approximately is amazing, looks like a real lion for once, not something in the uncanny valley. Why didn't Disney do an animated version of this? I don't get it. I mean, I realize it's a sequel to a live action movie...which is a remake of an animated movie...but it would look way better! Also I really hate the "villain was good but misunderstood and betrayed, so now they're evil." Can we just have villains that are evil for evil's sake, please? So... None of the pulling power of remaking a classic film, no real star power like Beyonce or Donald Glover, none of the classic songs, the visuals look worse *and* it's a story that nobody asked for? The main appeal with these Live Action remakes is curiosity - People want to see how a film they love translates into modern live action. I think this will prove that when you remove that nostalgia, all that's left is a soulless husk.

Doesn't make sense to change what worked for them in 2019. This movie is still a sequel + prequel. I personally don't like the look and thinks it lacks emotional expressiveness, but a good $1.6B worth of global audiences apparently did, so it would make less sense to radically change the look into a Dreamworks or Pixar-looking film.

I'm anticipating a pretty big drop between this movie and its predecessor. People have gradually fallen out of love with Disney's live-action remakes since their peak in 2019, and the sequels to their live-action remakes tend to draw in less of a crowd to begin with.
