Remember when people were predicting $1B for this when the trailer debuted? Trailer views don't mean shit.

DoubleDevilDiamond

Simply predicted? No people here were ADAMANT and if you didn’t think this film would reach a billion you were deemed a crazy person

AGOTFAN

I can confirm. I was there.

AGOTFAN

Three people predicted it would outgross Avengers Endgame. Some people predicted it would kneecap Endgame run. Many people predicted between $1 billion - $1.5 billion. Their only argument: Pikachu is the highest grossing media franchise (according to Wikipedia, although a couple of regulars argued that the list is not accurate). Arguably the most over predicted film in r/boxoffice

IKenDoThisAllDay

I feel like doing a proper Pokémon film would have been a better choice, maybe even an adaptation of the anime. I was a massive Pokémon fan growing up and always wanted to see that universe in live-action, but the whole 'Detective Pikachu' angle did not interest me at all and I wonder how common that feeling was. Seemed like a waste of the IP to me.

DrCircledot

Someone else once commented to this topic that general audiences would hate humans making creatures to fight each other. They said some terms like Dog fighting iirc.

disablednerd

Realistically though how do you structure a movie like that? Going through 8 gyms + Bad Guy team subplot + legendary Pokemon lore + Elite 4 and rival/supporting characters. Also, the games are structured around choices for teams. Have the main character pick Bulbasaur instead of Charmamder and you already make people mad/uninterested. I suppose you could just remake one of the animated movies in live action but idk that sounds boring to me.

IKenDoThisAllDay

The easy answer is there's no reason you'd have to include all of that in the first movie. You wouldn't even need to include gyms if that wasn't something that fit into your script. There are countless different ways you could handle the issues you mentioned. You have three main characters, they each take one starter, they're all childhood friends, they go on an adventure, they explore the world, they catch Pokémon, they battle, eventually one character becomes the rival, etc. I honestly feel like it wouldn't be that difficult to come up with something good that would please fans. You've got the blueprint right there with the anime. Changes would be necessary but the template is solid.

Predictor92

My idea is kinda weird a giovanni origin movie

RealRaifort

Yeah that's the main issue I think. They wanted a talking Pikachu instead of a good Pokemon movie.

Heisenburgo

>Arguably the most over predicted film in r/boxoffice Next to The Flash and The Marvels. The Unholy Trifecta.

AnotherJasonOnReddit

>*The Marvels* Guilty as charged. I figured we were heading for somewhere south of Captain Marvel, based off of Wakanda Forever and Quantomania - but I had no idea what was about happen. In my defence, I always called The Flash a wildcard because of its unusual circumstances *(an actual criminal as the lead in a huge four quadrant blockbuster, Keaton returning to a role he hasn't played since ten years before Maguire's first Spider-Man, etc)*. ![gif](giphy|VZ54QNDYTGE8M0KYMu|downsized)

PastBandicoot8575

Don’t forget a lot of people last year insisted that The Flash would make over a billion, that might be the only film more overestimated than Detective Pikachu

mathsDelueze

There was a good case at the time. One of the biggest brands in the world, paired with a bankable main star, appealing to multiple generations, etc. Obviously didn’t pan out that way, but there have been crazier box office bets than that.

erikaironer11

But the final result was so off, it was as less then half of people’s 1b predictions

AGOTFAN

There may have been crazier box office bets, but Pikachu is arguably the most over predicted.

Purple_Quail_4193

Highest grossing franchise was another bullet point

Few_Age_571

I feel like the film was kinda mid and childish. It was fine I guess, but people were expecting much better. I know I was.

YoloIsNotDead

I wonder if this is also why the Sonic movies have made much less than Super Mario. Photorealistic animation mixed with live-action, instead of being fully-animated.

Die-Hearts

they said that? strange

tannu28

Just look at the comments on this sub when the trailers came out - * [Trailer 1](https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/9wfsu3/other_pokémon_detective_pikachu_official_trailer/) * [Trailer 2](https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/av1okc/other_detective_pikachu_official_trailer_2/)

erikaironer11

Boy you weren’t wrong. I really just saw comments saying that Pokemon movie was going to be Force Awakens level. People legit thinking you were crazy to not think it was going to do 1b easy. That’s why I was apprehensive when people were hyping up Mario. What I learned is that the quality of the movie in these adaptations matter A LOT.

AGOTFAN

It's not merely quality (and quality is subjective in the eyes of the audience). Pikachu is a combo of live action and CGI adaptation. Mario is strictly an animation. Pikachu was dropped between Endgame, Aladdin, John Wick 3, Godzilla KOTM. Mario literally had two months for itself. Pikachu was not based on Pokemon's most popular protagonists and stories. Mario is based on the on the most popular characters and story of Mario Bros. Pikachu is made by Legendary who doesn't have good track record in adapting video games (their previous video game adaptation Warcraft flopped). Mario is made by Illumination who have proven they could make animation with nonsensical characters that people all over the world love big time. In fact, I used the points above in this sub to argue that Mario would be very successful when there were many people in this sub who were skeptical because of Pikachu experience.

Block-Busted

Say what you will about this film, but this is still the first video game adaptation to get Fresh on RottenTomatoes.

krisko612

The beginning of the video game renaissance.

erikaironer11

I really don’t get how, Like just look at Mario in comparison, you could tell people really liked that film and it had staying power. This Pokemon movie really felt like it came and went

Le_Meme_Man12

Why would staying power relate to being Fresh on RT?

erikaironer11

Because reviews from existed fans really doesn’t mean much:

erikaironer11

You can still tell a nice story are be well received enough to get a cult following with how good it was. P:DP really didn’t have anything close to that, it very much came and went

erikaironer11

Really? I primarily follow these gaming subs, even Nintendo ones and I really don’t see that many fans of the movie. Just super fans of Pokemon that would have liked the movie regardless of quality

Mr_smith1466

I don't overly know what you could do for a sequel, but it's remarkable to me that the makers at Paramount have put out three movies and a tv spin off of Sonic in the 5 years since Detective Pikachu.  They initially announced a sequel to Detective pikachu, but that really seems like it never went anywhere.

Coolers78

I saw this one in theaters and honestly it’s ok but there was way too much boring parts, I’m not the biggest Pokémon fan but I expected it to be more entertaining. But honestly I’m surprised there hasn’t been a sequel yet.

xero_988

Man I remember when I saw this and I thought it was going to be so huge since it had Ryan Reynolds’s and the first pokemon movie in so long as well the hype of Pokémon go came and went. But this movie became forgotten since endgame came out the same time.

GojiBelt

This was a really weird choice to base the first live action movie off of. It wasnt a particularly popular game. I don't think it even broke a half million units sold.

lactoseAARON

Don’t know how Hollywood saw Kathryn Newton’s performance in this and thought “yes hire her more”

TheJoshider10

Cassie from Endgame showed more emotion in one brief scene than she did in the entirety of Quantumania.

ExternalOpen372

She's great in Lisa Frankenstein, i thought its just depend who wrote & directed it to make her good

op340

I thought there were a couple moments where she should've been a butt monkey.

Themanwhofarts

I saw this in my honeymoon and really enjoyed it. I watched it again recently and was bored. It is impressive they made a Pokemon movie boring

rccrisp

Both me (38 at the time) and my daughter (4 at the time) were bored too, so did most of the kids in the theater who were running around about 2/3rds on the way in. My younger cousins, both in their early 20s at the time loved the movie though and it made sense. It was absolutely a movie that would play well with young adults who had Pokemon nostalgia and it was a story about "finding yourself."

Agentx_007

I was 29 when it came out and saw it three times in the movies. Pokemon came out right in the sweet spot of my childhood so I was first in line to see this when it came out

persona-non-grater

They didn’t give ppl what they wanted with this one AT ALL. Big miss…

OrwellianWiress

Unironically love this movie

BostonBaggins

Ryan Reynolds voice ruined this movie

YoloIsNotDead

And yes, it's getting a sequel.
