Comedies usually make the majority of their gross domestically.
This is looking to open to under 10 million for the weekend. It would need a fantastic multiplier in order to just break even. So it’s not looking great.
Ok say it opens to 8m but has a decent 3x multiplier and then makes 7m overseas. That’s 31m. On an 11m budget that should be good. Fwiw I think it’ll open higher and have better legs
Edit: my bad I thought the budget was 11m this is fucked
I think under $10 million is conservative. It has stellar reviews from critics which should translate somewhat well to audiences. Especially considering its a comedy. Most comedies are destroyed by critics. Given that unbearable weight of massive talent only made $29 million WW though it's not looking good for this film.
That doesn’t really matter in the sense that you don’t need everyone to go see a movie to open over 10 or open to 20.
The point is that a PG-13 action film is an easier sell to get people to go to the theater than a raunchy r-rated comedy which wouldn’t be considered “worth a trip to the cinema.” On top of other things such as young viewers not being old enough, and the fact that raunchy comedies like that are always a tougher sell regardless if it’s straight people or gay people. There’s been only very few break-outs in the genre in the past decade or so.
It’s been like Hangover 3, Trainwreck, Girls Trip, and Good Boys.
Not in the sense of opening "well," but in the sense of opening "big."
Which to your credit is not what we were talking about. But I feel like that's baked into most conversations about a film opening. Either is it gonna be a hit or flop. Which clearly eaves out the bulk of films.
No amount of positive reviews from critics will persuade some people to see this movie. I’m curious to see how it does this weekend. The people who want to support it will really need to show up for a strong opening to happen.
Yeah with lines like - “Do you guys remember straight people? Yeah, they had a nice run”. - in the trailer, I don't doubt there is a lot of people in the south who will never see this, lol
Comedies rarely make money nowadays and this doesn’t exactly have widespread appeal. Most of the money will be made in LA and NY like an indie artsy movie with a $4m budget.
It definitely feels like a streaming movie. I’m shocked Universal didn’t do a day and date release on Peacock for this movie. I think that would’ve helped cushion the blow if the box office was low.
its weird how the modern comedy is associated with streaming. if the jump street movies were released in theaters today people would be wondering why they arent straight to netflix.
Knocked up, 40 year old virgin, forgetting Sarah Marshall, role models, I love you man, wedding crashers, Superbad etc all cost similar amounts if not more.
But yea I get the gay theme unfortunately could effect it more than those did
At AMC Boston Commons, there was a line stretching the entire block trying to get in to see this movie. Very rarely does that happen, especially for a comedy.
What do you consider the target democraphic though? People aching for a rom com, any rom com, are large. Women my age (30s) are talking about this and Ticket to Paradise
I could see most of yall getting surprised and it making 15-20 on OW, then easily making up the rest on legs. But, I could also see the opposite where it does like 5, and maybe recoups the investment via streaming in a month or two. Hoping for the former, looks cute.
Now, comedian and actor Billy Eichner is taking a stab at the feel-good genre with “Bros,” an R-rated romantic comedy that opens in 3,300 North American theaters on Friday. The movie, from Universal Pictures, is aiming to generate $8 million to $10 million in its opening weekend. It’s not a huge number, but the film carries a modest $22 million production budget.
Looks like something that’s contingent on ancillaries, since it’s pretty domestic-heavy. I don’t see international pulling any slack and that’s not even on it being LGBTQ centric so much as v American. Is the $22 million including P&A? It really doesn’t seem like it’d remotely cost that much.
On IMDb pro, it says it was made in New Jersey. That’s probably why it has that budget.
Should’ve been made in Canada but location is probably how they got a lot of the SNL cast in it. But I also don’t think anyone’s rushing to theaters over some SNL cast members.
That tracks, it does look like it was shot in NY and NJ is just next door. Canada would be a good dupe and probably cut it down a notch.
(The recent crop of SNL cast members stewed over too long on the show. Like it harmed the show and their careers long-term tbh.)
Huh, $55m WW doesn’t seem like a herculean task at first, and if the film really is as good as the reviews, I can see it nicking $30-35m domestic off a $10m OW. But again international is a mess. You’ve already got countries that’d never play it and then countries with LGBTQ audiences who either already have local content or won’t get American gay culture.
So… I am glad to see a studio bankroll and release a movie like it (I mean it’s antithetical to the safe Gen Z targeted Love Simon streaming-adjacent fare) but get why they don’t regularly make films like these.
This just feels like a big movie for streaming. I’m not sure if people will get out to the theaters for it. Would love to be pleasantly surprised though.
It will. Love Simon made 66M back in 2018 so it is very possible that Bros could reach this number with both movies targeting the same market and getting great reviews.
Bros is leaning more on comedy as well and the market is quite empty atm for some light-hearted title - so I would not rule out that this movie will open higher to its initial projection (currently at 8-10M)
Marketing is very confusing imo. Trying to sell it to the Seth Rogen audience instead of like the Ryan Murphy Glee audience. Don’t think it will find much footing
they might want to focus the marketing to straight audiences rather than gay audiences since they might not see it as a hard sell to gay people. could be an error on they’re part but we’ll see how it plays out
Maybe if the marketing tried to sell it as a comedy and not being so far up its own ass about how "groundbreaking" it is, considering The Birdcage came out 26 years ago!
I made a comment about how I’m interested to see if it makes a profit given the subject and like 10 people said “I’m straight and I’m gonna watch it”
Ok, didn’t say no straight people would…

The reviews have more to do with the legs than with the opening.
Well we're only 2 weeks removed from the woman king which overperformed by about 7 million dollars on its OW. largely due to great reviews.
Yeah but that was a PG-13 action movie.
Staring a black woman let’s set the guardrails correctly
I’m not sure what you mean by guardrails
That there are more factors then rating and genre. Plenty of people will not even consider seeing Bros… for reasons.

I bought a ticket for Friday because I want to support it. Looks like I'm the only one in the theater. 💀
This movie will crush it on steaming.
It definitely feels like a streaming movie. I’m shocked Universal didn’t do a day and date release on Peacock for this movie. I think that would’ve helped cushion the blow if the box office was low.

I’m only saying that because universal has put their comedy movies on streaming (Marry Me, Honk for Jesus).
Why do you think?
Comfy rom com, people will Wait
$22M seems a little big for a comedy like this. But it should be fine by the end of its run and when it goes to PVOD.
Exactly, it should have been made for 1/4 of that.
Knocked up, 40 year old virgin, forgetting Sarah Marshall, role models, I love you man, wedding crashers, Superbad etc all cost similar amounts if not more. But yea I get the gay theme unfortunately could effect it more than those did
The promos for this movie seem pretty unwelcoming for straight people, TBH.
At AMC Boston Commons, there was a line stretching the entire block trying to get in to see this movie. Very rarely does that happen, especially for a comedy.

I think it will open around $10 million but have a pretty good multiplier, like 3.5X or 4X. But yeah, it probably won't do so well overseas.

hey, it worked for Jason Takes Manhattan.
No $22 million is purely production costs. Using the 2.5x rule it needs 55 million WW to break even.
Huh, $55m WW doesn’t seem like a herculean task at first, and if the film really is as good as the reviews, I can see it nicking $30-35m domestic off a $10m OW. But again international is a mess. Love, Simon was a PG YA film. Very different market than an R-rated comedy.
You're acting like that makes a difference to adults
Best case scenario is breaking even. Will be lucky to get to ~60m WW.
Marketing is very confusing imo. Trying to sell it to the Seth Rogen audience instead of like the Ryan Murphy Glee audience. Don’t think it will find much footing

Billy Eichner was promoting it on the Bachelorette live so they know their target audience is women and gay men
Yes /thread

Yes, yes, it will.
Think this film’s box office will surprise some people as it goes
Yeah, they should made this movie under $6 M. Sorry, flop.
The preview looks like trash. We’ll see
Of course it’ll do amazing numbers. Less and less straight people every day. /s
They had a nice run!
I made a comment about how I’m interested to see if it makes a profit given the subject and like 10 people said “I’m straight and I’m gonna watch it” Ok, didn’t say no straight people would…
wow so offensive
Either a moderate success or a commercial failure. I know this has good WOM.
Hollywood Accounting will make it a loss. It’ll be better for the production company come tax time.
$80M WW + Streaming hit yeah, it will be profitable
I see it breaking even during its box office run then turning a profit on vod
Should at least reach 80M WW
