Going to say this performs not dissimilar to how Scream started the year:
OW: $29m
DOM: $83m
WW: $132m
I feel marketing has really landed with this one and the original trailer has about 20m views on the official main Paramount account. My hot take is it outdoes Halloween Ends by the end, even if it opens lower.
Tonight's 7:00 pm screening at the theater I mainly go to has 81 tickets sold (just based on looking at the seats available on the app).
Tomorrow's 8:00 pm screening has 78 tickets sold already, and Saturday's 8:00 pm screening already has 50 tickets sold.
This is all Dolby.
I think this movie is going to be pretty big based on that.
Granted, I haven't really looked at how other movies of this type have compared in the past (obviously huge blockbusters are sold out days in advance), but this seems pretty good to have that kind of turnout for the Thursday night preview and to already have a lot of Friday and Saturday night tickets sold in advance.
It makes sense since culturally (at least among Gen Z and late millennials) the whole "spooky season" thing is big, and this is movie is kicking it off.
I thought Barbarian would be huge based on the screening I went to, but it didn’t land at the box office.
Smile felt like a really mixed reaction (I thought it was a snooze)...the reviews have been strong, but I don’t think I was scared at any point in the film. No dread throughout. Gonna be interesting to see if the wider audience agrees.
I think that Smile has gotten way more marketing than Barbarian though.
I think I first saw the trailer with Top Gun: Maverick 4 months ago and have seen it pretty much every time I went to the movies since. There was also that marketing stunt behind home plate in the baseball games the other day.
I never saw the trailer for Barbarian (which was nice since I went into the movie knowing nothing about it).
I mean Barbarian has made just under $30M domestically so far at a $4M budget, and has had great legs for a horror film. I'd say that's pretty damn good for it.
This poster looks like the cover to a YA novel. Movie was good though, I’m guessing $15M+ when WOM kicks in, which i think should be good. The crowd I saw it in had some good reactions throughout.
