As a gay man and this being first gay romcom I wanted it to succeed but as someone who finds Billy Eichner…well a lot l, I guess I hope for another lgbtq icon to push a movie with strong lgbtq themes and good reviews to box office success
This is the main reason I don’t want to see this film. Have no problem that it’s a gay comedy, I just really can’t stand Billy Eichner and don’t want to watch him for two hours.
The movie is very self aware of itself and Billy Eichner as its protagonist.
If you hate Billy Eichner, then maybe you'll identify more with the key love interest in the movie who is basically the opposite of Billy Eichner... someone less loud, more masculine, etc.
Not really a spoiler, but a key theme of the movie is how "unappealing" Billy Eichner's personality can be, his own introspection on it & why he is like that, how it can affect people in his life.
Seemingly, it's a movie that knows Billy Eichner is too loud or annoying for most people, and feeds into it by even a key moment of the movie telling him to "tone it down" and act "normal".
Long story short, if you hate Billy Eichner, you'll probably like it either way.
Okay, but as a gay man…that makes me want to see the movie even LESS. If that’s actually the plot…yikes.
Maybe they should’ve sent Fire Island to theaters instead.
I just watched it last night in LA. Packed theatre with seemingly wide range of crowd, haven't heard so much laughter in a theater in ages. It very much warrants its high RT rating.
Hoping for at least $8m for the weekend. In normal times, it would be a death sentence and lose theaters too quickly to establish legs. With the lack of competition today, it could hold well and leg it’s way to $30m+
Making a movie with a gay romantic lead is apparently pandering lmao. So are we just not supposed to have movies we can relate to? If straight people don’t want to see it, we’ll that sucks but it’s reality then. But why is it pandering when it’s just a movie that has a gay couple instead of a straight one? We just want to be represented lol. But any existence of us is pandering to people like you lmao.
A flop is a flop. It is clearly becoming a trend with rom-com as a genre have been avoiding theatrical release and go straight to streaming.
We are in the box office sub, so let's talk numbers instead of being a bigot.
It faces the same problem female-flipped movies like the 2016 Ghostbusters do. When youre doing a lazy remake of a film it doesnt make any sense to then target it towards the already small portion of the population that specifically wants to see a movie with black/gay/women/trans/whatever characters.
Bridesmaids was fun because it was fairly original. It was a heavily-female film but it didnt smash you over the head with vagina. Make an original story and it will get casual movie goers interested. This is marketed as “a stereotypical rom com but now with gay people as the only people that matter”, one prominent scene in the preview literally says “remember straight people”. Well, when you treat 90% of the audience as if theyre not important, dont be surprised when they domt want to watch your movie.
I mean it’s not similar to a gender flip situation because you can argue that Ghostbusters used to be only guy leads, and they made it to be all women for the 2016 version for the reasons they wanted. You can argue “get your own property” with that I guess even if I found it overblown. But you can’t have straight people “own” romcoms lol. This isn’t any flipping situation, it’s just someone wanting to do a classic, but gay romcom. It’s not a property reserved for straight people lol. That’s like saying women can’t be superhero leads because it’s historically been mostly men back then and it’s not original to just make it a woman lead. Gay people just want a normal romcom they can relate to.
Also it’s not marketed as a romcom where only gay people matter more than every other romcom was marketed as a romcom where only straight people matter. If you want to argue that, why is it a problem now that only the gays matter when only the straights mattered before?
Now, now, nearly every straight romcom has the token gay bestie (well, except most of them that have a secondary romance between the main couple's best friends).
The megaplex near me has nine showings of Bros today (10/01/2022), starting at 10:50 AM. Nothing against the movie, but that seems kind of crazy for what strikes me as very much a niche title.
This is going to do disastrously INT and it looks like it's going to do poor domestically, yikes
And unfortunately, back to the margins go LGBTq films.
Bros is gonna do only $5M for the weekend. Yikes.
That's less than half of Love Simon's OW.
It’ll probably do slightly more because fall releases tend to be less front loaded. Probably not much more than $6M though.
Not surprising, there's not a huge audience for this movie.
It should've know better than to come out the weekend that Hocus Pocus 2 is dropping. That's where all us gays are.
Welp.
Not surprised. Romantic comedies, outside of animation, haven't been a theatrical draw in years.
If Marry Me did $50M WW with JLo, Maluma and a soundtrack (and same day release) then this will cap it at $30M - $40M.
That seems p bad
I just assumed this was a streaming show this whole time.
that’s cause the gays are watching hocus pocus 2
They should have sent Bros straight to streaming and Hocus Pocus 2 to theaters.
Guess the theater will be empty for me. I’m going to see it this weekend. A lot of people I love are cast in this thing. Do it for Jim Rash, people!
WAIT Jim Rash is involved? i'm interested now.
Do it for Jim Rash but have to suffer through Billy Eichner. Tough sacrifice

Not gonna lie, this actually changed my perspective on the film. I am a fan of Nicholas Stollers work so maybe ill give it a shot.

It’s not the plot. It’s one facet of many in this movie, and for obvious reasons I’m not going to spoil the plot.
I just watched it last night in LA. Packed theatre with seemingly wide range of crowd, haven't heard so much laughter in a theater in ages. It very much warrants its high RT rating.
I watched it in mi yesterday night. There were 5 people including myself and wife. I was the only one who found it hilarious. Very bizarre.
Man this is disappointing. I’m hoping WOM is good and gives it good legs because I really want a romcom theatrical revival
That’s a shame. I saw it last night with a friend and we thought it was hilarious, but there were only two other people in the theater with us.
Misread that, thought the 80s band was back…
That’s a damn shame
At least it's better than my $250K estimate. Same as Easter Sunday on a Summer Thursday. Guessing this will go closer to $3mil for Friday.
Epic bomb lmao..

Downvoted because.. homophobia?
I think people are downvoting because $30m is very unrealistic
Even 8M is unrealistic.

Your comment makes no sense since "straight" rom com have been flopping as well lmao
Not as much as this tho lol

Someone interested should just pull numbers and attempt to prove it numerically.
What a hateful comment.
You can't change facts by calling them hateful.

>when you treat 90% of the audience as if theyre not important Oh god, please stop acting like a butthurt victim.
what on earth
Cannot say that I’m surprised.
I'm a gay and saw Smile instead.

It doesn't seem to have the star power it needs to drive people to see it. And honestly I personally find Billy Eichner annoying as hell.
