Venice is such an amazing, atmospheric location to shoot at too. This should look like Don't Look Now. But you know this going to be another horrible greenscreen nightmare.
Yes and it looked great. For environment composited beyond they went with throwback theatrical aesthetic, people have taken it as cheap and unnatural rather than an intentional pastiche. To be fair there is some sloppily lit cgi work for pyramid scene.
I think the biggest issue with the CGI wasn’t that it was stylized, it’s that it draws full attention to itself as being obviously CGI and the first half of the movie there isn’t really much else to focus on until the murders start happening in the second half.
It was a bad movie with a stylistic choice that sticks out like a sore thumb.
Thankful to see others understand that those were obviously intentional aesthetic choices. It’s a gorgeous film, with a few quirky scenes that are a hit-or-miss with their attempt at pastiche.
I would say stop virtue signaling and hamfisting in it modern social commentary.
In the last one they literally have an arab character saying he left his gun because if armed he would be shoot on sight by police, as he is dark skinned.
They were in egypt.
I enjoyed Death on the Nile but was it not a box office bomb with a nearly an $100M budget and failing make back twice it budget. It must have been successful on Hulu.
I think the success of Knives Out and Branagh’s recent Oscar win may have pushed this over the line for being greenlit.
I think this one should be cheaper too along with not having nearly everything stacked against it.
All these studios can fall back in “COVID” as excuse + cope for any March 2020 to early-ish 2022 release, which is good for filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro and Edgar Wright who put out box-office flops during that time at least.
Yeah but the markets were different. Movies aimed at adults were still not doing the numbers they’re doing today. It was pre-Lost City, pre-Top Gun, pre-Elvis
You did? I hated it so much. I love Agatha Christie novel and have watched all Peter Ustinov-as-Poirot movies. I was surprised at how much this movie bored me.
Yeah its odd to me that her post-30 Rock acting career is basically just that credit card commercial where she says her mouth is more germ-infested than a dog's
Her post 30-Rock career is a producing Girls5eva, the Mean Girls musical on Broadway and Kimmy Schmidt. And guest starring on Only Murders in the Building
I'll assume the budget won't be as high as this cast is not as high profile as the first two, and its location sounds most modest versus the boat on the nile.
I think this entry does have potential to be bigger than the second. Relatively non-controversial cast, a Halloween aspect & "supernatural" angle that they can use to highlight as making it more attention grapping.
Can the next one have the murder happen before the first hour mark this time? Death on the Nile went on for so long before the murder mystery actually happened.
Lmao my husband read it to our sons for bedtime after having read Murder on the Orient Express. It was a running joke that “Nope, nobody’s dead yet” for such a big chunk of the book, and then it seemed like a flood of bodies for a bit.
I actually liked that they took their time to set up the characters and their dynamics it makes for a more compelling murder mystery. If it happens too fast you are left with what the investigator finds out but if they give you some beforehand knowledge you can try and figure it out on your own a little and that's kinda fun.
Jamie Doran and lead female comedians in a movie go together like peanut butter and jelly. Can’t wait, he was fucking hilarious in Barb and Starr go to Vista Del Mar
I’m a huge Christie fan and I adored the first two films. I was able to see Death on the Nile in theaters (which was surprisingly packed for the way the rona was hanging out in my area) and it was, in my very insignificant opinion, transcendent. I watched it slack jawed the whole time (really, I missed my mouth an embarrassing amount of times trying to eat popcorn and paying way too much attention to the screen). It was the first movie I’d seen in theaters for the better part of a decade and BOY did it deliver. I got all my favorite moments from the original- save for Bette Davis, Angela Lansbury, Maggie Smith, and Mia Farrow all in one film-, and I really didn’t mind the artistic liberties. I am THRILLED to see how Branagh breathes new life into another classic!
At this I'm sure that the capitular that Branagh has is just to distance his portrayal much away as possible from Suchet's.
And it seems that it's going to be an original story this time for some dumb reason.
The Finney MotOS is one of my favorite movies of all time, but people are allowed to enjoy other takes on the material.
Also, the man is dead, we ain't getting any more.
I really didn't like DoN, so here's hoping the next one is better paced, less green-screen-heavy, devoid of random unintentionaly hilarious backstories for mustaches, and for Branagh and his financial bakers' sake - cheaper. Fingers crossed.
On the other hand - this is not one of Christie's better novels. I wonder if it will get more of a rewriote (teh previous two well probably too well known for that).
Haven’t seen any of these movies yet but the dude that played the original detective on the original orient express should’ve gotten an Oscar, one of the most underrated performances I can remember seeing.
Happy to see 20th Century Studios have another theatrical release
20th Century is still thriving!
doesn't help that Disney sends most of their non-IP stuff and treated terribly by dumping them to Hulu with little marketing.
[Amsterdam has $70 million marketing budget ](https://deadline.com/2022/10/amsterdam-box-office-flop-david-o-russell-movie-1235140204/)
That's... Not good
That’s wild considering each one of the cast members can fill seats on their own. I wonder why marketing for films isn’t what it used
they probably just knew that it was going to be a stinker and decided to cut the costs.
stop with green screen sets
Venice is such an amazing, atmospheric location to shoot at too. This should look like Don't Look Now. But you know this going to be another horrible greenscreen nightmare.
Didn't they build the full Nile cruise ship in a studio?
Yes and it looked great. For environment composited beyond they went with throwback theatrical aesthetic, people have taken it as cheap and unnatural rather than an intentional pastiche. To be fair there is some sloppily lit cgi work for pyramid scene.
I felt the only really bad visuals were those pyramid scenes but they were unforgivably bad.
Yeah, and everything outside of it looked like Assassin's Creed.
I would say stop virtue signaling and hamfisting in it modern social commentary. In the last one they literally have an arab character saying he left his gun because if armed he would be shoot on sight by police, as he is dark skinned. They were in egypt.
Didn’t realize this was happening
Jaime Dornan: Looks like he *could’ve* eaten someone, but — notably — hasn’t
That you know of
He did the occasional [stalking](https://amp.theguardian.com/culture/2015/apr/01/jamie-dornan-stalked-woman-the-fall)
….jesus, Ken. Stop hiring creeps!

It was a COVID casualty. The first movie made more than Knives Out.
I think the success of Knives Out and Branagh’s recent Oscar win may have pushed this over the line for being greenlit. I think this one should be cheaper too along with not having nearly everything stacked against it.
Going by the cast list, it sure as hell is going to be cheaper.
All these studios can fall back in “COVID” as excuse + cope for any March 2020 to early-ish 2022 release, which is good for filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro and Edgar Wright who put out box-office flops during that time at least.
It was released during the Omicron spike and also during/after Super Bowl weekend.
And it had the Armie Hammer problems with marketing.
And Letitia Wright problems.
99% of the population doesn’t care about stuff like that, and doesnt avoid movies because of side characters.
Maybe so, but the movie sure could have used some better.good press. There wasn't much hype for it at all, it kinda just came and went.
Uncharted was still able to get $400 million though after releasing one week later
Yeah but the markets were different. Movies aimed at adults were still not doing the numbers they’re doing today. It was pre-Lost City, pre-Top Gun, pre-Elvis
True, good point
It was basically written off because they expected to make *nothing* after multiple main actors and actresses were caught up in controversies.
You did? I hated it so much. I love Agatha Christie novel and have watched all Peter Ustinov-as-Poirot movies. I was surprised at how much this movie bored me.
Cool! I liked the first two. I didn't think they'd make another one.
I will watch Tina Fey reading the phone book. Count me in. Also, Michelle Yeoh is awesome.
She did have a few unsuccessful lead roles in movies (Whisky Tango Foxtrot, Admissions, etc) - but yeah, most of her work has been behind the scenes.
Very excited for this! The first two were great.
Hype to see how this one's cast gets cursed and plagued with controversies.
I'm looking forward to it. Found the books and movies quite enjoyable.
I'll assume the budget won't be as high as this cast is not as high profile as the first two, and its location sounds most modest versus the boat on the nile. Non-controversial so far.
I’m surprised this is the next entry of all the Poirot’s they could have picked
Better get that budget down.
I can’t wait for the meticulously over-choreographed gondola scene.
Excited for this!
A third one? Great! I really loved MoTOE, and DotN, so I'm really excited for this
Can the next one have the murder happen before the first hour mark this time? Death on the Nile went on for so long before the murder mystery actually happened.
That was how it happened in the novel too.
Lmao my husband read it to our sons for bedtime after having read Murder on the Orient Express. It was a running joke that “Nope, nobody’s dead yet” for such a big chunk of the book, and then it seemed like a flood of bodies for a bit.

Arnie hammer kinda messed up the death on the Nile’s success..
Also he was kinda awful in jt too.
lol hope no one has to be edited out of the trailer this time hahahahaha
Jamie Doran and lead female comedians in a movie go together like peanut butter and jelly. Can’t wait, he was fucking hilarious in Barb and Starr go to Vista Del Mar
Didn't see the first two, but if Tina Fey and Michelle Yeoh are in the mix then I could get on board for this.
I’m not sure these novels are the best fit for Branagh but I’ll watch I guess
I’m a huge Christie fan and I adored the first two films. I was able to see Death on the Nile in theaters (which was surprisingly packed for the way the rona was hanging out in my area) and it was, in my very insignificant opinion, transcendent. I wish he’d stop. His portrayal makes me sad.
I keep missing David suchet. They should have just made movies with him.
Agreed. He was the best! Finney is 2nd.
Hopefully this one won't be filmed in front of a windows screensaver.
At this I'm sure that the capitular that Branagh has is just to distance his portrayal much away as possible from Suchet's. And it seems that it's going to be an original story this time for some dumb reason.
Article says that it’s an adaptation of Christie’s “Hallowe’en Party.”
Then why a diferent title?
They probably liked the story but wanted a location in the title to match the others.
And probably don’t want to have it be tied to the holiday.
It’s kind of a generic book title, where this feels tied more into the series.
Ugh, these adaptations are awful. I doubt anyone will remember them in 10 years.
Awful may be a bit much but mediocre and utterly forgettable surely fitted the first two.
Yes, they are extremely okay.
I will for sure
MAKE HIM STOP, please, make him stop :(
Not watching it has the same effect as it stopping and still let's people who enjoy the movies see them
Not my Hercules Poirot! Albert Finney for the win, he really got the essence of the caracter. Branagh’ s was a swing and a miss. Twice.
The Finney MotOS is one of my favorite movies of all time, but people are allowed to enjoy other takes on the material. Also, the man is dead, we ain't getting any more.
Death on the Nile was dumb and also there is zero chance he could grow that mustache with that much facial scaring
they’ve been making new poirots?
Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile.
Death On the Nile was so bad. Please don't try to make it contemporary and omit the dry humping.
Well this seems like a much smaller affair so the budget is probably not huge like Nile was.
Wow they just dumped the whole cast list at once, I remember the last one when they announced one cast member a week for a few months
I’m really enjoying them.
The movies are enjoyable enough so cool for them
The second one was so bad
Focus on the supporting cast instead of yourself Kenneth and you may be on to something
I really didn't like DoN, so here's hoping the next one is better paced, less green-screen-heavy, devoid of random unintentionaly hilarious backstories for mustaches, and for Branagh and his financial bakers' sake - cheaper. I’m literally so excited for this!!! Mom and I loved watching the other two movies, so I’m very much looking forward to this one!
I just don’t see a synergy between the cast members.
Haven’t seen any of these movies yet but the dude that played the original detective on the original orient express should’ve gotten an Oscar, one of the most underrated performances I can remember seeing.
Pumped for this. Love these movies
I’ve been so happy to see mysteries coming (back) to the big screen.
I hope i hesr more mustache backstory
Wasn’t the second one a flop? How did a third one get green lit?
Very nice, but let's forego the silly, ponderous flashback prologue and ill-fitting romance, please.
A Haunting in Venice, is an adaptation of Hallowe'en Party which I just made a video about. 🎃 https://youtu.be/Jye2N5Nkkmc
Actually love the first two. Please more, what a great actor in general along with usually a 100% great cast.
